Attention All ‘DADS’ of
Gateway Students You are invited to
“Donuts with Dad”!
Thursday, Feb. 12th
Dear Fathers and Father-figures,
On Thursday, Feb. 12th from 7:00 – 7:45 a.m. (for elementary) and 7:45 –
8:30 a.m. (for secondary), we will have our 4th annual “Donuts with Dad”
Event at our school. You and your student(s) will meet in the Gateway
Cafetorium for FREE donuts and drinks. You will be able to learn about
Gateway’s WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) Program.
WATCH D.O.G.S.® is an innovative program being used by schools
across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life. The
goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and provide an extra set of eyes and ears.
Dads, granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers - this is your chance
to have time with your student in a fun atmosphere at school.
Note: Elementary students need to be in class by 7:45 and secondary students need to be in class by 8:30. Dads of both are
free to attend either time, but students need to be sent to class
by the appropriate times.
Sincerely,
Wayne Filer

Fathers, Stepfathers, Uncles, Grandfathers, Big Brothers...,
From the WATCH D.O.G.S. website at www.Fathers.com <http://
www.Fathers.com> :
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that lost children today in Connecticut and also with the families of the adults that died, no doubt, rushing to
their aid. There really is no way to even begin to understand this tragedy or the
depth of the grief of the families and loved ones left in the wake of this senseless
violence. Our hearts are broken.
The WATCH D.O.G.S. program was inspired by a school shooting in Jonesboro,
Arkansas in 1998 but it does not pretend to be a deterrent to an act so monstrous
that it defies comprehension. The WATCH D.O.G.S. program stands as a testimony to the millions of moms and dads and educators that form partnerships
within their communities, and across this great country of ours, in order to provide the very best educational environment possible for all of our nation’s children.
There's a crisis at hand. Father-absence <http://www.fathers.com/research/
> affects about 27 million children in America, and it’s spreading. It’s linked to
higher rates of poverty, failure in school, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, violent crime, depression, and ultimately a loss of hope. Your children are growing
up in that culture, and they’re being affected—even if you’re an involved dad! If
our culture continues on its current path, things will likely be much worse in all
these areas for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We have an important role to play in lives of our children and schools attend. Study
after study proves the impact a positive male role model has in the lives of children. WE NEED YOU! Please, make this a priority the 2nd half of the 2013 - 2014
school year. The PTO and I have created a schedule with the teachers to make this
easy for you by creating a variety of options if you can't spend the entire day on
campus. Those who have NOT been a WATCH D.O.G., please sign up! Those that
have, THANK YOU – please sign up again... you know you loved it!
We only have a limited time of influence in the lives of our children so the time to act
is now. I look forward to seeing you on campus.
Regards,
Wayne Filer

Be “IN THE KNOW” for SCHOOL and PTO:
Attention All Beginning Theatre Students:
After Spring Break your class will be studying Puppetry and Masks. During
this unit we will be making personal drama face masks (a cast of your own
face). Please bring $5 to help cover the costs of the materials BEFORE Spring
Break so we can get all of the supplies needed for this fun activity. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Kasie Kline (Theatre Director)
for more information.
To help reach the 2014-15 fundraising goals for Gateway College Prep, Orenda/Gateway is
going to embark on a "grass roots" effort this semester to promote more student family participation. We need parent volunteers from each class of students (i.e. Class of 2017, Class of
2018, Class of 2019, etc.) to help with this endeavor. It will be a relatively easy task and won't
take but a couple hours of your time. If you are interested, please contact the Orenda Development Office at 512-869-3020 or email [email protected]. Once we gain a commitment from several volunteers, a meeting will be scheduled to discuss specifics. Thank you for
your time and support of our school!
ALL STUDENTS must re-enroll for the 2015-2016 school year! You must re-enroll your student(s) in
