A Note about Becoming Sponsors
For Baptism and Confirmation
It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism
or Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an
“other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why
sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 years of age or
older, having received Confirmation and currently living a
good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that
person must be in a valid Church marriage. One sponsor
is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two
for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other female. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification
from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/
deacon that the individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the individual
must be a current parishioner of the particular parish where
the certification is being sought, and be known to the priest/
deacon as being a faithful practicing Catholic, attending Mass
there regularly. Unfortunately, at times, family members or
friends are chosen to be sponsors with good intentions, but
are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also,
more and more, people seem to think that they are still
“parishioners” of their childhood parish, where they attended school or received sacraments years ago, while no longer
living in the area or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all individuals to be active members of their local
Catholic faith communities. The unfortunate fact is that
some are neither practicing Catholics nor faithful members
of a parish family, and are thereby ineligible to become sponsors. Like all other things in life, individual choices bring consequences. Here, at Seton, Certificates of Sponsorship are given by the pastor to registered members
of the parish who are practicing Catholics and who
meet the above criteria. Please see the pastor after
Mass on Saturday evening or Sunday to inquire
about getting a certificate.

Reflections
Draw near to Me and I will draw near to you.
St. Teresa said, after her death, when she appeared to one of
her nuns, “What we in heaven do with the divine Essence,
you on earth should do with the Blessed Sacrament.”
There is no one to whom the mere vicinity of the Blessed
Sacrament has not been the cause of unnumbered blessings.
Faith in and devotion toward the Eucharist will result in a
perfect unity of communion among all Christians.
Our Lord came to the aid of each great tribulation with a
special devotion. The devotion which God now sends to
succor His Church is devotion to the most Holy Eucharist.
It is the highest of all devotions.

FEBRUARY 2nd - FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION - CANDLEMAS
The Feast of the Presentation, often called Candlemas, commemorates the purification of the Blessed
Virgin Mary and the presentation of Christ in the temple, which occurred 40 days after his birth as
prescribed by Jewish law. According to the Mosaic law, a mother who had given birth to a boy was
considered unclean for seven days. Also, she was to remain 33 days "in the blood of her purification."
Luke tells us, quoting Exodus 13:2,12, that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem because every
firstborn child was to be dedicated to the Lord. They also went to sacrifice a pair of doves or two young
pigeons, showing that Mary and Joseph were poor. Once in the temple, Jesus was purified by the prayer
of Simeon, in the presence of Anna the prophetess. Simeon, upon seeing the Messiah, gave thanks to
the Lord, singing a hymn now called the Nunc Dimittis:
Lord, now you let your servant go in peace,
your word has been fulfilled:
My own eyes have seen the salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of every people:
a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.
Simeon told Mary, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is
spoken against, (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts
may be revealed." Simeon thus foreshadowed the crucifixion and the sorrows of Mary at seeing the
death of her Son.
The name Candlemas comes from the activities associated with the feast. It came to be known as
the Candle Mass. In the Western Church, a blessing of candles and a procession with them lighted is
the distinctive rite. Often the local parish will hand out candles, or you may bring your own, to be
blessed before the procession. These may be saved for later use in your home. After an antiphon,
during which the candles held by the people are lighted, there is a procession into the church. During the
procession to the church, the Nunc Dimittis is sung, with the antiphon "Lumen ad revelationem" (Luke
2:32). This procession into the church for Mass commemorates Christ's entrance into the temple. Since
Vatican II, the feast is reckoned a feast of the Lord (as opposed to a feast of Mary), and officially
designated "The presentation of the Lord."
In many places, the precepio or crèche or nativity scene is left up until the Presentation. So in some real
sense this feast has marked the end of Christmas observances.
Candlemas Day was also the day when some cultures predicted weather patterns. Farmers believed
that the remainder of winter would be the opposite of whatever the weather was like on Candlemas Day.
An old English song goes:
If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Come winter, have another flight;
If Candlemas bring clouds and rain,
Go winter, and come not again.
Thus if the sun cast a shadow on Candlemas day, more winter was on the way; if there was no shadow,
winter was thought to be ending soon. This practice led to the folklore behind "Groundhog's Day," which
falls on Candlemas Day.
In keeping with the tradition, we will bless a representative number of candles at the 9:00AM
Mass. Theses candles will be used to give the blessing of throats on the Feast of Saint Blaise on
February 3rd.
