As you know by now, on November 13, 2013,
one of SCCA!s youngest members, Maxton
Paul Prill, now age 3", was diagnosed with
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Early in his course of treatment, Max received
a cape, donning a lightning bolt with an M in
the middle. He immediately adopted the alterego “SuperMax”—a miniature superhero that
fights cancer and encourages others facing
similar battles to do the same.

CHECKERED FLAG: EUGENE “SPUD” ENSING
After a long battle with pneumonia Eugene “Spud” Ensing was placed
in Hospice Care on January 16th at 3PM, when modern medical cures
could no long slow down the damage to his lungs. He quietly passed
away at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids during the night at 12:30AM,
Saturday January 17. Spud was 88 years old.
With enough credits to graduate from high school, Spud left high
school early, December 1944, and joined the U.S. Navy to help defend
his country in World War II. He became an aircraft mechanic and
stayed with the U.S. Navy through the Korean War. Being o'ered better
rank and pay Spud joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956 where he continued
to serve his county. In 1966 Spud was sent to Vietnam making him one
of the few to serve his county in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
In 1968 Spud retired and brought his family to Michigan. He had
always had a passion for fast cars and auto racing, but only as a spectator
at various race tracks around the country. He saw stock cars race at
Soldier’s Field in Chicago to Indy cars at Michigan International
Speedway. It was in preparation for one of those M.I.S. races that Spud
went from spectator to participant. He was at the bank in the summer of 1973, getting some cash for his trip, talking to
the teller about his racing passion. It was then when the teller, Marge Carpenter, who was a Western Michigan Region/
S.C.C.A. member, asked Spud if he wanted to work a race. That August Spud and his son, Gordon, found themselves
on Turn 3 at Grattan getting their first experience as Flagging and Communications workers for the S.C.C.A., with
Frank Karl as their corner captain and instructor.
Send Beautiful Flowers
It wasn’t long until Spud was working more races at Grattan and traveling to Waterford Hills to get more experience.
Once he achieved his Divisional F & C license, and with some help from a membership in Michigan Turn Marshalls, he
was o' to work his first pro#race, the 1978 U. S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. When the U.S.A.C. and C.A.R.T. spilt
came in 1979 Spud went from spectator to course observer at M.I.S., expanding his pro#racing experience while still
doing all of the Michigan S.C.C.A. events he could.
Spud’s enthusiasm for working F & C was passed on to his wife, Alma, daughter#in#law, Connie, and sometimes his
youngest son, Don. With family support, and at most events traveling with him, Spud worked races at Blackhawk
Farms, Road America, M.I.S., Mid#Ohio, Cleveland, I.R.P., and, of course, both Detroit Grand Prix tracks. When Spud
and Alma wintered in Tucson they continued to flag through the winters at Phoenix International and Firebird
Raceways.
Working races was a pure joy for Spud, but he also enjoyed leading, teaching, learning, and listening to and telling
stories about racing. His background as an aircraft mechanic also came in handy for helping out workers and racers
with various problems that his mechanical background could help solve for them. When Bruce Harrington, W.M.R.
member, bent the front wings on his Super Vee, Spud took them to the fabrication shop at the airport and repaired
them for Bruce. His skills were even called on at a C.A.R.T. race when their track dryer wouldn’t start and he got it
going. He was always ready to help with a big smile on his face
Spud worked races into his late 70s and after he retired from flagging would come out to Grattan for a visit. Now an
honored spectator he would spend more time visiting with friends than watching the cars on the track that first drew
him to racing in 1950’s.
Spud will be greatly missed by the members of Western Michigan Region/S.C.C.A. His enthusiasm, humor, guidance,
friendship, and big smile will be remembered by many W.M.R. members and racing o!cials throughout the U.S.A.

The Funeral Service for “Spud” was Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the Cedar Springs United
Methodist Church, 140 S Main Street, Cedar Springs, MI 49319.
Our club sent a nice plant with our heartfelt condolences to the Funeral Home and made a Memorial
Donation in memory of “Spud” to the National Naval Aviation Museum Foundation in Pensacola, FL

T you
Thank you to W.M.R. Members
The family of Eugene “Spud” Ensing would like to thank the
members of the Western Michigan Region/S.C.C.A. for their
thoughts and prayers on his recent passing on January 17.
Spud loved sports car racing, but more than that the many
people he worked with and met as a flagger for more than 25
years. The planter sent to the visitation by W.M.R. will be
cherished by us as a great reminder of the love and friendship he
had with the members of W.M.R. in years to come.
MA 75:01 31/72/11
We also, want to thank the board and membership of
W.M.R./S.C.C.A. for their memorial contribution to Spud’s
other major interest, aviation. Your contribution to the
National Naval Aviation Museum has helped start a memorial
fund in his name. Spud was not only a lifetime member of the
National Naval Aviation Museum, but like everything else he
joined, worked there as a volunteer guide and aircraft restorer.
Sincerely,
Spud’s Kids

2015 Michigan International Auto Show
at DeVos Place
February 6 # February 9
!
303 Monroe Ave NW
!
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Everybody within our club knows that one of our challenges is to make our organization and our events known to the general public. To help meet that challenge the
WMR board has decided to participate in the 2015 Grand Rapids Michigan International Auto Show, presented by the Grand Rapids New Car Dealers Association.
Annually this show provides West Michigan residents with the greatest opportunity to view their "next new car!" Car manufacturers from around the world will bring
their finest traveling displays with over 300 new vehicles. Not only is the Auto Show the BEST place to shop and compare options for every day vehicles, it is also the
first opportunity to see many of the most recently released or "soon to be released" models! This year WMR is going to participate in the show with a display
including two cars, located in booth 180, across the aisle from the SAE display and adjacent to Volkswagen.

Motorway" ...our total? ...well over $1 Million!
Gilmore Car Museum Display
The Gilmore Car Museum in nearby Hickory Corners, has truly become America’s Signature Collection as it tells America’s story through the automobile. Each year at
MIAS it presents an outstanding exhibit of historic automobiles and this year is no exception! . While breaking somewhat from their tradition of bringing cars from
various decades the Museum has brought a truly stunning array of automobiles from the Fabulous 1950s! Sponsored by Michigan Radio, 104.1 fm, Your NPR news
station.
Gizmo the Robot
Be on the lookout for Gizmo the Robot while you’re at the Show! He’ll be wandering the aisles entertaining attendees.
Racing Awareness
RacingAwareness.com is dedicated to enhancing the lives of children and their families coping with the illness or injury of a child. This West Michigan based nonprofit
organization’s efforts are focused on raising awareness and funds to launch and support Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital programs and services. They strive to
achieve this through the unique niche centered on auto racing.
Experience the thrill of auto racing first-hand at the RacingAwareness.com booth at the Show. The RA team will be unveiling their new car for the 2015 racing season.
SAE International Collegiate Design Series
The SAE International Collegiate Design Series is a competition that is open to college students all over the world. Teams from Asia, Australia, Europe, North America,
and South America compete every year to see who can design, build and drive the most innovative vehicles. The goal is to create a competitive environment for
college students to apply their technical theories to real world problems
This year, the SAE Western Michigan Section student teams will be at the Auto Show to display their vehicles, talk about the competitions, and share about the
challenges and successes that they have had while competing in the series.
