CANDIDATE STATEMENTS - Wairoa District Council

Wairoa District Council By-Election
17 February 2015
CANDIDATE STATEMENTS
Denys CAVES
Sean GASKIN
My principal place of residence is in the Wairoa District Council
area.
My principal place of residence is in the Wairoa District Council
area.
Greetings Residents.
I’m a permanent Wairoa resident and ratepayer in both the
rural and urban sectors, semi-retired with no employment
demands on my availability.
I have considerable previous experience in local body
governance having served several years as a locally elected representative, had
had a vocation in educational administration with broad personnel and financial
management.
Wairoa faces challenges that may change our District’s future, residents have huge
investments here in their properties, businesses, homes and jobs, so need the
confidence that those involved in decision-making will listen to them, make informed
common sense affordable, financially sustainable decisions.
It’s vital we have effective representation focussed on advocacy, affordability and
effective essential services with ease of access to services.
My objective is to maintain affordable, cost effective services that meet this
community’s needs with timely planning and open transparent communication that
benefits our ratepayers.
I’d appreciate your support.
I am honoured that Waipatu Winitana has nominated me as a
candidate. He and many local folk know that from the moment
I chose to live here over 10 years ago, I have had an immense
love for Wairoa and its people. Some of the current councillors
know that I have a vying interest in council matters, having
sat in on many council meetings in the past. So I have a sound
understanding of how local governance should be, in making policies, setting budgets
via annual and long term plans - without interfering with the running of daily business.
I can and do make decisions independently, but I would like to speak for the people of
Wairoa, because it’s the people that build our community and a healthy community
promotes a healthy town and a healthy town will see exciting opportunities in the
development of compatible industries within the Wairoa district.
Dave EVANS
My principal place of residence is in the Wairoa District Council
area.
For 24 years, working with the community of Wairoa through
various community organisations, being a member of the
Walkway Committee and having served for three terms in
council made me realise the importance of serving people
and it is my desire to once again serve the people of Wairoa.
I am also in a private rail group and I support the reopening of the railway as many
ventures lead from it.
In connection with this, my agendas are to promote tourism, create jobs and serve the
community to the best that I can. My past service experiences prove my qualities as
a leader and the ability to act quickly on issues that need urgent solution. My three
terms in council could verify my capabilities and people can vouch for my character
as a person. I am approachable and open to ideas. However, when it comes to
amalgamation, I am totally against it as Wairoa will be no better off.
Julianna DAWSON
My principal place of residence is in the Wairoa District Council
area.
My name is Julianna Dawson. I’m standing for a position on
the Wairoa District Council because the time is right to offer my
skills to help in the transformation of our District.
I’m a strong advocate for environmental wellbeing and
sustainable development. I feel the best way to push forward
with work I have already undertaken for our community is to be on the Council.
This is an exciting time and with the right people in the right places our District will
develop into a home our future generations will prosper in.
I’m from the Wairoa District. My first ten years were spent in beautiful Waikaremoana,
my next ten in paradise at Mahia. Wairoa is now where I spend most time, in North
Clyde raising my family.
Faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain, I have faith in Wairoa.
Shaun HARAKI
My principal place of residence is in the Wairoa District Council
area.
I am pleased to have received a nomination in this Wairoa
District Council By-election.
Our constituency models heartland New Zealand with its
farming, forestry but is also fortunate to have popular holiday
destinations of Mahia and Te Urewera National Park. Wairoa’s
opportunity is encouraging local production, processing of
what the land provides and supporting development of our recreational whenua.
Hand in glove with processing is a working rail line. Quicker, easier toll road travel north
and south sharing the existing rail reserve is a transport project worth investigating.
Requests for Government help to seal SH38 through to Tuai remains a priority.
Wairoa has my support voting down the Better Hawkes Bay amalgamation proposal
however leadership is needed to explore opportunities for re-organisation with
councils to our north and west.
With your vote I look forward to stepping in the forge of Wairoa local government and
building confidence in Wairoa’s future.
Jeremy HARKER
(Independent)
My principal place of residence is in the Wairoa District Council
area.
I have extensive experience in leadership, management, and
governance gained from 27 years in the NZ Army, as a Director
on the Health Hawkes Bay Board, and a Consultant.
I am actively involved in the Wairoa community through JAB
Rugby, Athletics and CACTUS.
I would like to use my skills and experience to contribute to the Wairoa community. I
am passionate about Wairoa’s future, and ensuring good decisions are made that will
benefit all of Wairoa in the long term.
My vision for Wairoa is that it is a well-connected, positive, forward thinking
community that fulfils its potential. This requires key decision makers to listen to
the community, and work hard ensuring they are fully informed when making those
decisions.
I am married to Paula Couper and have three school aged sons who are thriving in
this unique strong community and am grateful for the remarkable lifestyle Wairoa
offers us.

area.
Don Leyland is 59, lives in Wairoa and has been here since
1992.
I parent Dom and Brooklyn, both at Wairoa College.
I work locally, for Schick Construction and Wairoa Building
Supplies.
I can bring a rational and critical mind to Council’s decision making process.
I am concerned to see focus maintained on infrastructure investment. As regards
amalgamation, that decision should be based on an analysis of its benefits, rather
than a knee jerk response and historical sentiment.
Please vote, and for me.
Trevor Michael MIHAERE

My name is Trevor Mihaere, I was born and raised in Wairoa,
