The first meeting of the Sea Trail
Master Association Board of
Directors of 2015 was held on
January 21 at the Pink Palace. As
usual, the agenda was full, we
had a number of homeowners
attend, and several addressed the
board. Each of our committees
made reports. As is past practice,
prior to the meeting, committee
chairs presented the Board with
written updates of their activities.
This meeting was the opportunity
for committee chairs to answer
questions regarding their written
reports and address any additional
concerns.
Based on these reports, the Board
discussed and approved the
installation of a “No Outlet” sign
at the entrance to Eastwood Park
Road. This sign is necessary since
some electronic map applications
are erroneously sending visitors
who come in the North Entrance
onto Eastwood Park Road to Mill
Pond Road, which is a dirt road.
The Board also approved the
purchase of two sandwich board
signs, which will be used to
advertise events sponsored by the
Health and Safety Committee.
The sandwich boards will be
displayed on the day of events to
remind homeowners of the
programs. Additionally, the Board
tabled four proposals for further
committee discussion and cost
estimates. These included
landscaping the front of the STMA
parking lot on the island of Sunset
Beach, resurfacing the tennis
courts, reconditioning the unstable
and sinking brick garden walkways
by the chapel, and building a
handicapped accessible ramp to
the upper level of the MAC.
The initial meeting of the year is
also the time to approve all
committee chairs and members.
We accepted the resignations of
two committee chairs, with regret.
Madeline Dubas has been the chair
of the Communications Committee
and is to be thanked for her
leadership in coordinating the Sea
Trailer newsletter, the STMA
website, and special
correspondence.

Large Print
Books
Needed
We are designating
a shelf for Large
Print Books at the
Jodie Hughes
Library. We would
be very grateful for
donations of large
print hardcover
and paperback
fiction,
autobiographies
and biographies.
Thank you,
Mary McGann and
Mary Brown
She has been a key person in
providing homeowners information
from Sea Trail Master Association.
Priscilla Donaldson is leaving her
position as co-chair of the Social
Committee. She has been
instrumental in planning exceptional
social events that the Master
Association has sponsored. Her hard
work and great attitude will be
missed, but we are glad to hear she
will continue to be a committee
member. We thank both Madeline
and Priscilla for all they have done to
make Sea Trail the wonderful
community it is. We thank all of the
homeowners who give their time and
energy to be either chairs or
members of our various committees.
Your work on behalf of the Master
Association homeowners is truly
appreciated.
The meeting then turned to our
Treasurer, John Rotherrmel, who
presented the board with the
Preliminary 2014 Financial Report,
Investment Status, and Asset Review
Status. If anyone wants further
information, or has questions, do not
hesitate to contact John.
Finally, as we reminded committee
chairs during the meeting, the
Master Association sends periodic
email blasts to our homeowners.
Committee chairs should contact me
with news/announcements/needs,
etc. Also, if any organization in Sea
Trail is holding an event and wants
that event to be announced in our
email blasts, please notify me at
[email protected]. If
appropriate for a blast, we will
include it.
The next meeting of the Master
Association Board of Directors will be
held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015
at 2PM at the Pink Palace.

Sea Trail Prayer Support Circle
Those of us who lived up north
called this time of year the winter
doldrums; everything seemed
grey and cold. We are so lucky
to be here to feel the warmth of
the sun, and stroll on our
beautiful beach, even the
snowbirds love to call it home for
a few weeks. Take some time
each day to thank God for all the
wonder that He has created.
Do you have a prayer request??? To
the right are the names and areas of
some of the members. Feel free to
call, as we all believe in the power of
prayer and pledge confidentiality.

From the Rules Committee
It has come to the attention of the Rules
Committee that rumors are circulating to the
effect that the rules for classes and instruction by outside
vendors are being changed. This is incorrect. There is no
discussion or intention of changing rules regarding use of STMA
facilities for classes or instruction for property owners by outside
instructors.
A property owner or group of owners may continue to reserve a
facility for individual or group classes for property owners utilizing
an outside instructor for a fee to be paid
by the property owners directly to the outside provider. The
applicable sections of the rules adopted by the board in July
remain in effect and should be consulted.
-- Bob Forrester, Chairman
ABCPOA Report
I would like to thank the six families for donating their old
computers to the schools for use in the classrooms. If any other
families have units the wish to dispose of, I will pass them on to
the voluntary group that cleans and refurbishes them. We have
not had a ABCPOA meeting since my last report but will be
discussing the homeowners insurance and legislative issues at the
January 28th meeting.

Dues Reminder from the Finance Committee
Due to server problems, a number of
residents who were scheduled to
receive their 2015 dues statement by
email did not receive their statements
in December or January. It appears
that the problem mostly affected
residents whose last name begins with
M or N, but there may have been
other groups affected as well. The
Finance Committee apologizes for any
inconvenience this problem may have
caused. While the committee believes
the problem has been fixed, if you still
have not received your 2015 dues
statement please contact Debra
Bordeaux (579-5374 or
[email protected]) as soon as
possible if you have not done so
already.
Dues for 2015 are $450; if you own a
vacant lot the master association
mows for you, the total owed is $550.
All dues and any applicable mowing
fees were due on January 1, and are
normally considered late after January
31, at which time a late fee and an
interest charge are normally
applied to the balance owed.
However, due to the problems
encountered with the email
delivery system and delay in
delivering a number of
statements, the committee has
established a grace period of
30 days, during which time no
late fees or interest will be
applied to any unpaid 2015
dues and fees. The new last
date after which 2015
payments will be considered
late is now March 2; any
payments received after that
date will be subject to the late
fee and interest charges. If you
have any questions about the
amount you owe or how to
make payment, please contact
Debra prior to March 2.
Thank you for your patience.
From the heart…
I am writing to encourage everyone in Sea Trail to
take the CPR course. It will only take a few hours of
your time to learn this life saving procedure that is not
complicated and easy to learn. Time well spent
considering the alternative if the occasion arises for
the need and you are not prepared.
I am very grateful to have been given CPR instruction
at the Pink Palace by Rich Burns a Brunswick County
Paramedic. He made the experience fun and taught
in a manner that was very easy to remember.
Make it a gift for your loved ones...much better than a
box of chocolates to show you really care.

Spotlight on… Paula Jones:
Communication Committee Chair
As of January 21, Paula Jones is Chair of the Master
Association Communications Committee.
As Chair of the Communications Committee, Paula will
have her hands full overseeing all communications with
the editor of the Sea Trailer, Amy Bucklin; the
webmaster, Lynn Weidman; the Welcome Committee,
including Diane Kreuzburg, Sue Shovlin and Myrt Klein;
and the lead for the Neighborhood Reps Committee,
George Scheidle. In addition, Paula will maintain
communication links with mapost.org
Paula is extremely organized and an excellent
communicator – skills that she acquired in her career as
a litigation paralegal. She managed each case's
evidence, preparing and organizing it for use at trial.
Most often that would entail reviewing tens of
thousands of documents. She developed standards and
procedures for reviewing, indexing and analyzing case
file documents in addition to training and supervising
firm paralegals.
In July 2008, Paula and her husband, Bill, moved to
Sunset Beach from E. Stroudsburg, PA. Since joining the
Sea Trail family, Paula has been actively involved in
many Sea Trail activities, including the Seahorse Book
Club, the Garden Club, Sea Trail Grannies and the
Ladies Golf League. Prior to retiring to Sunset Beach,
Paula spent 35 years as a litigation paralegal in
Massachusetts and New Jersey. If you don’t see Paula
on campus for a while, look for her in either Wisconsin
or New Hampshire, where she and her husband, Bill,
are sure to be spending time with her grandchildren.
Please Save the Date: Wednesday
evening, March 11 for a program entitled
'The Technology Age: Tips To Keep
Your Information Safe and Secure'
a presentation designed to inform residents
of various types of online information theft
and security risks.
Yoga Classes
Many doctors are recommending
yoga to prevent and help with
various health issues. Some of
these include: joint and back
pain, anxiety and stress disorders
and increasing flexibility and
strength for a better golf swing.
If you are interested in taking
yoga and experiencing the
benefits it can provide, there are
two classes being offered.
Currently, both of them are being
held in the multi-purpose room of
the Creek Side building on
Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Beginning March 3, the classes
will move to the Village Activity
Center. A Vinyasa Flow class is
from 9:30 - 10:30 am and is most
suited for those with some yoga
experience. Your experience can
be very limited. Having taken any
yoga class and being familiar with
the basic moves is all you need.
A gentle/beginner class begins at
10:45 am for an hour. During
this class movements are slow
and lots of instruction is given on
alignment and breathing. This
class offers a great introduction
to yoga for those who have
always wanted to begin their
practice but may have been afraid
to try it. Please bring a mat. If
you have any questions you can
text or email Pam at 910-2315006 or [email protected].

Neighborhood Awareness
Program - Keep your
neighborhood safe!
Thurs., Feb. 19th from 7P-8:30P
(Pink Palace Complex)
A very informative presentation
put together by our local police
department and Sea Trail residents
who have been retired from law
enforcement. This program is
designed to offer homeowners
safety tips and precautions to help
keep your neighborhood safe.
Safety Reminder – Avoiding
close encounters with cars
when walking dogs. For those
who walk their dogs using
neighborhood roads during dusk or
when it's dark, remember to do so
safely. Wear reflective clothing,
use that leash, walk facing
oncoming traffic, and be mindful of
drivers on the road. Your
neighbors thank you in advance.
February is "National Heart
Month" In the US, heart disease
is the leading cause of death for
both men and women.
Risk Factors: High blood pressure,
advanced age, high low-density
lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol, and
smoking are key risk factors for
heart disease. Several other
medical conditions and lifestyle
choices can also put people at a
higher risk for heart disease,
including: Diabetes, obesity, poor
diet, physical inactivity, and
excessive alcohol use.
What you can do to reduce your
risk: Monitor and control blood
pressure, exercise regularly,
eliminate smoking, monitor blood
cholesterol and triglyceride levels,
maintain a healthy weight,
increase fruits and vegetables in
your diet, monitor and control
blood glucose, and get regular
preventive physical exams.
Go Get the AED!
If you were asked to go get an AED (automated external
defibrillator) for someone having a cardiac arrest, would you know
where they are? If you do not know, PLEASE take 5 minutes out
of your day and find them. Knowing this could save a life…your
husband, your wife, a grandchild. We have a total of 7 AEDs
throughout Sea Trail. 3 are in the STMA buildings and 4 more in
the Sea Trail resort areas. The STMA AEDs are in the Jody
Hughes Library and fitness rooms in the Creek Side building and
Pink Palace. The resort AEDs are in the Conference Center,
Magnolia’s, Maples Clubhouse, and Visitors Activity Center.
Just knowing what building an AED is in is not enough. You need
to know exactly where in that building you will find it hanging on a
wall. Time is of the essence! The STMA AEDs are available during
the hours the buildings are open and residents could be present:
6 am until 10 pm seven days a week. The resorts are available
when the buildings are open to the public.
The perfect scenario is all residents knowing how to do CPR and
use an AED. In January the H&S Committee offered a CPR/AED
refresher class and it will be repeated again in the future.

Golf @ Sea Trail
Heard Around the Bag Drop – As I write this article, the weather is
warmer than usual for the month of January. As a result the golf
activity around the Resort has increased. I know I’m more inclined to
get out there and hit the ball when temperatures are in the 50-60
degree range and above. Let’s hope that frigid weather is long gone
and February brings more of the warmer temperatures. So get out
there and support STLGA by playing on Wednesdays.
February Pairing Coordinators are Kaye Evans and Marge Layden.
– Pat Gooding
18-Hole Couples Golf – Thanks to the Jeromes & Jones for hosting

Lady Niners – February is here, the days are getting longer and the
Lady Niners are ready for golf after a cold January. The 18-On-the-Go
will be Monday, February 9th, course to be announced. The STLN
Luncheon meeting will be Wednesday, February 11th. The menu
looks great and there will be a Valentine’s theme. The STLN Couples
Tournament will be held Sunday, February 15th. The pairing
coordinators are Betty Hewel and Carol Gartner.
The first clinic was a huge success and I’m sure everyone will be
chipping like a pro in no time. The February clinic will be on Tuesday
the 17th. Get your putters out and sign up at the J/B clubhouse. The
pairings coordinators for February league days will be Marlene DeHaas
and Kathy Bender.
Be sure to sharpen your golf skills and have fun at the same time with

12 THE SEA TRAILER
Gratitude
Thanks from Kate and John Goodrich – For the past 8 years we
have been pleased to captain the Sea Trail team (aka the Sea Trail
Strollers) in the annual Relay for Life in Brunswick County. During that
time, our team members and other loyal volunteers have raised in
excess of $103,000 for the benefit of the American Cancer Society. The
Relay will go on this year May 1-2 at West Brunswick High School, but
we have decided to end our role as captains. We will not be fielding a
team this year unless another group of volunteers comes forward to
take over the Strollers. We would like to thank all of you who have
been team members, event helpers, or donors for the wonderful support
shown to this event. The money we raised stays in Southeastern North
Carolina. Cancer is not beaten yet but during our tenure strides are
being made. All of you in this caring community have helped in the
efforts to defeat cancer. Thank you!
Save the Date: Soup & Stew Cook-Off

organized three years ago, in honor of Bob Clark.
We still need a few more cooks and they can register by calling Anita
Clark (575-1049) or Hanneke Nagelkerke (575-5846).
Enjoy unique, home-cooked soups, and stews, provided by Sea Trail's
neighborhood "chefs" and share an evening with friends. A minimum
donation to ALS of $10 per person will provide you tastings of these
delicious, home-cooked specialties and can be paid at the door.
Donation checks payable to ALS. It will be BYOB, but water will be
available along with a dessert sale, a 50/50 Raffle, and a Silent
Auction. Prizes will go to the top vote getters in each category. Last
year we raised a total of $6,000 to help find a cure.

contact them at 287-7566. All are welcome.
Ladies Bridge meets every Thursday at 9:15 at the
Pink Palace. To sign up or for more information, please
call the February hostesses Pat Diehl (575-0676) or
Kay Roberts (575-6928). All levels of play are
welcome.
Pinochle meets every Wednesday at 7 pm in the
Sunset Room. We play double-deck and are a friendly,
patient group. If you would like to just come and
"observe" for an evening, you are certainly welcome to
do so. Couples and singles are invited. Questions:
please call Loraine Kish at 575-2440.
Borrowing from Granny’s Closet
There are Sea Trailers who are willing to lend out
items such as cribs, high chairs, and medical items (for
example, crutches or a walker). If you need to borrow
an item, please call Eileen Chamberlain (coordinator)
579-3111, Chris Woods 579-0052, Diane Kreuzburg
579-4333, or Peg Jones 575-1222. If you have
something you would like to add to or remove from
Granny's Closet, please call Eileen.
Bridge
for the Heck of It
Larry Hershoff (579-1546,
[email protected]) is looking for
bridge players (couples or not)
who would like to play party
bridge for 2-3 hours occasionally
just for fun. Ideally, we would
have two or three tables at
someone’s home, but if the
number is greater than expected
we could pursue the MAC or
Pink Palace. This is NOT
competitive duplicate!
If interested, please call or email
Larry, who will assemble a
database of players and their
contact info — please indicate
your preference for days and
times so we can figure out when
people want to play. Guests are
welcome, by the way.

16 THE SEA TRAILER
Something Old Something New
It was the fall of 1999 and something was missing from Nadine
Cybyske's musical life. She had moved to Sea Trail that September,
and lamented that she would not have the opportunity to
participate in a Christmas singing group. In October 1999, a Sea
Trailer article, phone calls, and emails produced a cadre of eager
vocalists – the Sea Trail Song Birds were born! That December,
with a trailer hitched to the back of an SUV, Nadine directed the
Song Birds in every neighborhood at Sea Trail, providing a variety
of joyous Christmas songs.
Over the years, the Song Birds have performed to the delight of
friends and neighbors. In 2012, the Song Birds lost their founder to
cancer. The concern was that the group would not survive,
however, all the Song Birds were unanimous in their determination
that the group would continue to perform. The Song Birds thrive
today under Mary Lou Dunbar's direction, with Bird members
providing guidance to the chorus. In recent months an issue has
risen. The electronic piano in the Pink Palace was starting to fail.
When Nadine passed, she willed her Baldwin upright piano to her
granddaughter Katie Vorderbruggen. Katie is a junior at Luther
College, Decorah IA., with musical training. However, that training
was as a drum major and trombone player. Hearing from her
grandpa Ron, that the piano at the Pink Palace was ill, Katie felt it
made perfect sense to donate the piano to the Master Association,
in memory of her grandma “Dean”. It would help the Song Birds, a
group grandma formed, continue to entertain the community
utilizing her piano. Katie couldn’t think of a better way for her to
honor grandma, than to allow the piano to play on in her memory.
