A Prayer for the World Meeting of Families
God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the
Church.
May your grace and love help our families in every part of the
world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your
Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek
your truth and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!
The 10 months prior to the World Meeting of Families have

We are not made to be alone. Human beings need and
complete each other. Friendship and community satisfy that
longing with bonds of common interest and love. Marriage is a
uniquely intimate form of friendship that calls a man and a
woman to love each other in the manner of God’s covenant.
Marriage is a Sacrament. Married love is fruitful and offered
without reservation. This love is in the image of Jesus’s
faithfulness to the Church.

Difficulty Hearing in Church? Did you know that you can bring
any transistor radio with a head set to church and tune to channel
107.5 to receive assistance with hearing. Those who have been using
this assistance are most pleased. The radio does not have to be
special. The least expensive ones work just fine.

Dear Sisters and Brother in the Lord,
Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemass Day) is Monday, February 2nd. This most ancient feast commemorates Mary
and Joseph presenting the infant Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem forty-days after His birth. It is a small bit of the Christmas
Season and in some cultures marks the end of the Christmas Season. The blessing of candles and brief procession to the altar will
occur at the beginning of the 6:30 and 8:30 am at Monday’s celebrations of holy Mass. Scheduled individual celebration of
Penance will be from 7-8 pm as is normal on Mondays.
Thank you to all, especially the Administration and Faculty of our parish school, for making the celebration of Catholic Schools
Week such a great event here at SSPJ. Our Students shine as bright beacons attesting to the value of our parish school as a great
opportunity for our families. +jcd
Monsignor Burke Hall Project Update
As the SSPJ Capital Campaign continues there has been a great deal of activity for the Monsignor Burke Hall project. Two weeks
ago our request was submitted to the Archdiocese for their review. Earlier this week there was a project team meeting in which
Matt Burns, SSPJ Parishioner and Finance Council Member, provided a great deal of insight and guidance on the various design
and construction processes and related contract agreements. Matt’s expertise has been invaluable in the past through the
development campaign for our school building addition as well as The Heritage of Faith campaign.
Members of the project team include Lee Casaccio and Eric Trainer from Casaccio Architects, Andy Eberwein from E.B. Walsh
Engineers for Civil Engineering and Site Design and Mary Ann Harris from MacElree Harvey as our Legal Counsel for Land
Development matters. Preliminary evaluations have been provided by McHugh Engineering (mechanical and electrical) and
MacIntosh Engineering (structural). Ray Crossan from Fidelis Engineering will be retained by SSPJ as the Project Manager and
will be working with Michael McCafferty, Parish Business Manager on overall project management.
The immediate needs in our ongoing feasibility work involve growth in the donor base and pledge amounts and land development
matters. Based on the initial analysis the total project is currently valued at $2-$2.5M. As we work through the feasibility study to
get the project concepts approved by the township we will then have a better idea on the total project cost. While the Capital
Campaign has received tremendous support from 325 SSPJ families we will continue to seek pledges throughout the parish in
order to advance the project. Through our meeting this week we learned that that the township process for land development
could take from six to nine months. Fortunately, both Mary Ann and Andy have a great deal of experience with the West
Whiteland township review and approval process. Andy is also very familiar with the SSPJ property through his involvement
with the school building addition and related site improvements. We will be providing a project update to our Pastoral Council on
February 5th and discuss the pledge status and financing plan with our Parish Finance Council on February 19th.
The SSPJ Capital Campaign now stands at $1,317,000 based on the following pledges:

STAND UP FOR LIFE
Action AlertSupport For the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36)
In a January 20 letter to Congress, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life
Activities, urged support for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36) introduced by Reps. Franks and
Blackburn on January 6. The conviction in 2013 of Dr. Kermit Gosnell for crimes committed while providing abortions
has “led many Americans to realize that our permissive laws and attitudes have allowed the abortion industry to
undertake these procedures.”
He added that, “these procedures after the middle point of pregnancy also pose serious dangers to women—as
evidenced by Dr. Gosnell’s own manslaughter conviction for one woman’s death, and news about the death or serious
complications of other women undergoing such procedures.”
Cardinal O’Malley urged Congress to support the common-sense reform offered by H.R. 36 and to oppose all
weakening amendments. Please show your support for H.R. 36 by contacting your U.S. Representative.

" Does anybody hear? Does anybody care?"
The MARCH FOR LIFE marked the 42nd anniversary of the
legalization of abortion in the U.S. at every stage of fetal
development. As a consequence, statistics show in the
greater Philadelphia area more than 10,000 abortions in the
first three quarters of 2014, almost 50% of them in the black
community. " Does anybody hear? Does anybody care?" St.
John Paul II on a papal trip to the U.S warned that if we want
peace we must end abortion. If you are not aware about this
evil taking place and would like to be informed as practicing
Catholics and people of God, come and view the compelling
documentary film "40" that examines the effects of abortion
on our nation. Can you spare one hour to become informed
about an issue vital for the future of our nation? We are all
called to stand up for life. PARISH VIEWING DATES AND

Second Graders Receive
First Penance
First Graders Complete Their
First Research Paper!
Our second graders received First Penance recently.
They know that when they confess their sins, they are
really speaking to Jesus who is loving and merciful.
During their instructions they learned the steps for
Penance:
Did you know that SSPJ students complete research
papers beginning in 1st grade? Our super smart
students choose a non-fiction book from the library
on an animal and write a report that is at least five
sentences. They also create a poster with colorful
photos and facts about the animals they have chosen.
Finally, they present their findings to their classmates
during an oral report. After giving their reports, their
classmates asked them questions. Below are Olivia
and Nicholas giving their reports.






 examination of conscience
 confession
 given a penance
 say the Act of Contrition
 absolution
 do my penance
SS. Philip and James is grateful to the numerous local
priests who came to hear Confessions. Has it been
awhile since you have received the Sacrament of
Penance? The Sacrament is available in the Main
Church on Saturday’s between 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. and
5:00 to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday’s before the 7:30 &
9:00 a.m. Masses, in addition to Monday’s from 7:00
p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you desire to go to Confession at
another time, please call the rectory to schedule an
appointment.
SSPJ Families Support
St. Agnes Day Room
Three SSPJ Students, as members of the Youth
Group, coordinated a service project in which they
asked their classmates for support. Lyndsey,
Amanda, and Caroline (pictured below) asked the
student body to donate food and clothing items for
the St. Agnes Day Room in West Chester. We are
very proud of our students for using their leadership
skills to help others!
Pictured above are Amelia and Cole who both received the
