January 2015
From Our Acting Rural Dean
At this time of the year we usually wish everyone a Happy New Year. It’s rather more difficult for us at this time.
In our Mission Community we have been shocked by sudden bereavement, with the unexpected deaths of Chris
Hebron and William Ley, both active for many years at deanery level and well-known in the community. We pray for
their families in their bereavement.
We bid farewell to Revd Chris Hardwick, the incumbent of Pyworthy and Mission Community Enabler. He takes up the
post of priest-in-charge at Tavistock from the end of January. We wish him and Sarah and the family well. It doesn’t
seem all that long ago that they were settling in to Pyworthy Rectory.
Chris Hardwick took over as rural dean in the middle of 2014. His departure now leaves a gap. I have agreed in the
interim to be acting rural dean until such time as the Diocese in consultation with Chapter is in a position to appoint a
new rural dean.
On a more positive note, we look forward to welcoming Revd Richard Freeman as the new incumbent in Bradworthy.
Revd Christopher Penn has undergone major surgery and is progressing steadily for which we give thanks.
Chris Hardwick steered our Mission Community through to the point of it being celebrated by Bishop Nick at an
important service in Holsworthy in September last year.
In order reach this milestone, we needed to have a functioning Mission Action Plan – which we now have. The Mission
Action Plan has been very clearly set out, and acts as a blueprint for the next five years and more, but even so there
has been some uncertainty about the churches in the Holsworthy and Bradworthy benefices. The number of benefices
in the Mission Community is being reduced from 5 to 4. The plan is for Holsworthy and Pyworthy benefices to merge
into one benefice, with one full-time incumbent. Discussions and plans for that are well underway.
For many years Milton Damerel has been part of the Holsworthy Benefice. However, plans are now going ahead to
draw Milton Damerel into the Bradworthy benefice of churches. Geographically, it seems to be best suited to be part of
that group of churches, so that when Revd Richard Freeman comes, he will eventually take over responsibility for
ministering to that parish as well as the other parishes in the Bradworthy Benefice. It has not been easy to arrive at this
decision, but given the fact that we have 4 stipendiary clergy to cover a very large area, it seems to be the best way
forward for both Milton Damerel parish and for the clergy.
If anyone has any concerns, or would like to talk further about any of these issues, please do contact me (details
overleaf) and we can arrange a time to meet up.
So, all in all, not an easy start to our new year. Perhaps as never quite before, we are being made aware of our human
frailty and aware of God’s unfailing mercy. Someone once said A person’s extremity is God’s opportunity.
Let’s commit ourselves and the coming year to the Lord in faith and trust, knowing that he will provide all that is
necessary for us.
With blessings and prayers
Kathy Roberts
