Lady Eagle soccer team wins
national academic award
For
the

County High School’s
girls’ soccer team has
been awarded the High
School Team Academic
Award by the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America. Coach
Chuck Adams’ squad
was one of only five
Kentucky schools to receive the award which
was awarded to just 194
teams nationwide.
Awarded for “exemplary performance
in the classroom as a
team,” during the 20132014 academic year,
OCHS’ team compiled
a 3.50 grade-point-average on a 4.00 scale. The award, which includes all team members who appear on the
school’s official eligibility roster for the season,
goes only to teams with
GPAs of 3.25 or higher. The annual award
is based on a team’s
academic performance
for the entire academic
year.
According to an official NSCAA news
release, “The Lady Eagles have received this
award in more years
than any other team
from Kentucky.”

Swim team honors Desmond on Senior Night

School swim teams finished their 2014-‘15
regular-season schedule
last Tuesday night, with
visiting Owensboro winning both the boys’ and
girls’ divisions. Tuesday’s meet at the Ohio
County Family Wellness
Center pool was also Senior Night as Eagle Foster Desmond competed
in his last home meet. Michael Foster Desmond, the son of Kenny
and Annie Desmond,
has been swimming for
OCHS for the last four
years and currently holds
school records in the
200- and 500-yard freestyle races. A member of
OCHS’ Beta Club, Eagle
Excellence, and National
Honor Society, he will be
attending the University
of Kentucky this fall on
a Kentucky Governor’s
Scholar scholarship. He
plans to study Pharmacy
there.

floor “Coach A Court.”
Albin began his teaching career at Central
Park Elementary in
1969 before moving to
OCHS where he taught
Physical Education for
some 32 years before
his retirement. While
at OCHS, Albin coached
baseball, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball,
football, and tennis. In the announcement
of the honor, it was cited that Albin had suffered some adversity in
his life—he was severely injured in an automobile accident in the
mid-1970s that required
years of painful physical rehabilitation—but
has always maintained
a very positive attitude
and outlook. His positive outgoing personality
was cited as having had
a profound impact on
the thousands of former
students and athletes he
encountered.

his brother Gary, other
relatives, and countless
numbers of his former

After echoing the sentiment of Albin’s influence on generations

visibly moved Albin
said, “I’d like to thank
the good Lord, and my
family, and everybody...
just keep on, keepin’
on, that’s all I’ve got to
say.”

falling 71-63. Monday’s
win upped the Fourth
Region team’s record to
14-9.

Barnett had the hot
hand early, tossing in
14 first-quarter points
as WCHS jumped out to
a 26-14 lead. But Ohio
County rallied in the
second period behind
Allison Druin’s eight
points to cut the deficit down to 37-32 before
Warren Central scored
the final four points to
lead 41-32 at halftime.
Tate Parker’s eight
points led Ohio County even closer in the
third period, as the local girls got to within
three points, at 50-47,
and trailed 53-49 with
a quarter to go. A pair
of Parker free throws
early in the fourth quarter cut the margin to
54-51 before a 6-0 Lady
Dragon spurt upped the
margin to 60-51. After
that, the Lady Eagles
got no closer than seven
points, and even trailed
by 15 before a late spurt
cut the final margin to
eight.
Barnett fired in 27
points to lead the winners, and all scorers,
while Zakoria Hill added 17, and Karajah
Leach 11 more for the
winners. Druin finished
with 25 while Parker
totaled 18 and Caroline
Nance 10 for Ohio County. Druin and Nance
had “double-doubles” for
the Lady Eagles as each
also grabbed 10-plus rebounds.

OCMS Eagles fall in GRSC Semis

Ohio County Middle
School’s
eighth
grade boys’ basketball
team was beaten 5643 last Tuesday night
at OCMS’ gym in the
semifinal round of the
Green River Athletic
Conference post-season
tournament. Tuesday’s
loss ended the Eagles’
season with a record of
10-8. Breckinridge County, the tournament’s
top-seeded team, took
a 14-10 lead after one
quarter, then outscored
the host team 12-6 to
carry a 26-16 edge into
halftime. Tiger guards
Kobe Poole and Joey
Howell combined for
14 points in the third
quarter as Breckinridge
County’s lead grew to
45-24. OCMS guard
John Parker had six of
the Eagles’ eight points
in that quarter, and
added six more in the
final period as OCMS
outscored their foes 1911. But it was much too
little and too late.
Parker led all scor-
ers with 22 points while
Poole had 14 and Jon
Whitworth 13 for the Tigers.

Andrew Barnes and Tucker Barnes recently
completed basic training at their respective
military bases.
Andrew completed his training at Fort Benning
Army base in Georgia. Tucker completed his
training at Parris Island MCRD, South Carolina.

They both recently made a trip home over the
Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, where
for the first time they have seen each other in six
months.
Andrew Barnes is currently serving his first duty
station at Fort Bliss, Texas. He will be serving our
country as a 19 Delta Calvary scout.
Tucker Barnes is currently serving at Fort
Leonard Wood, Missouri. He is currently in school
for motor transportation for the Marine Corps.
Andrew and Tucker are the twin sons of Scott
Barnes of Rockport and Candace English of Utica.
Grandparents are Barry and Alta Barnes of Ohio
County, Robert and Linda Ewing and Jimmy and
Bonnie Hill, all of Muhlenberg County. Both young
men are 2014 graduates of Ohio County High
School.
