LOCAL campaigners who took part in the recent anti-water charges protest
at Coláiste Eoin in Finglas have said there was no intention to impinge on the
school’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

President Higgins, who was visiting
the school to mark the anniversary, was
subjected to a tirade of abuse from protesters who were angry that he signed
the bill into law for the controversial
charges.
On his way into the school, protesters
stood on the road shouting and chanting while gardaí observed the situation.
However, some protesters became agitated when gardaí began to push back
some demonstrators who had moved
towards the school gates.
Later, when President Higgins was
leaving the school, some protestors
rushed his car, standing in front of it in
an apparent effort to stop the vehicle.
A heated altercation then took place
after gardaí forced some protesters from
the middle of the road.
The protest hit the headlines last week
when footage of the incident was posted
on Facebook and YouTube, sparking criticism from several political figures.
However, speaking to Northside People, local activist Bernie Hughes defended the protest and described the school
as “one of the best in the area”.
“There was no intention to impinge on
what was happening in the school or discredit it in any way,” she said.
“We did not want to bring bad press to
the school. Two of us went to the school
after and asked could we speak to the
principal to convey that it wasn’t our intention by any manner or means to impinge but she wasn’t there.
“I left my details but I can understand
if they can’t get back to me, and I appreciate that, but I’ll email her myself.”
Protestors believe the President is a
legitimate political target for demonstrations, pointing to his public comments on
austerity, and feel he could have made a
stand against the water charges bill.
“The whole purpose of the protest was
to let the President know how dissatisfied the people are,” stated Hughes.
“I don’t condone bad language or anything like that but I do understand how it
happened. All people wanted to do was
to vent their anger.”
Hughes also believes critics have made
too much of the bad language and insults
hurled at the President.

which I think they’re entitled to do
if they feel betrayed,” she added.
“I don’t approve of the personal
comments. It’s not right but it’s a
storm in a teacup. Some people
have a very colourful vocabulary.
It’s just a bad habit.
“Not one local person has
come to me and said we were
wrong. They’ve commented on
the choice of language but the
underlying message is that we
weren’t wrong.”
Despite the unwelcome media
attention over the protest outside its gates, Coláiste Eoin was
delighted with what happened
inside the school that day.
“The students in Coláiste Eoin
had a wonderful day celebrating
our 50th Anniversary,” a spokesperson said. “The celebration
was honoured by the presence of
President Higgins and Mrs Higgins spending over an hour visiting the school.
“The students wowed the
President with poetry, a rap on
inclusion, a Samba drumming
performance and champion Irish
dancing.
“Two first year boys surprised
the President and Mrs Higgins
with a gift of hand-turned pens
made from Irish oak and walnut.
It was a fantastic celebration and
was thoroughly enjoyed by all our
students, parents and guests.
“Our sister college, Coláiste
Ide, supported the event by hosting a canapé reception that was
both impressive and intricate in
presentation.
“It was great success for all our
students and a testimony to the
wonderful school that Coláiste
Eoin continues to be.”
Anti-water charges
protestors slammed
by local politicians

LEADING local political figures, including Tánaiste and Dublin
West TD Joan Burton, last week strongly criticised the anti-water
charges protest outside Coláiste Eoin.
The Tánaiste was targeted by
anti-water charges protestors
herself last November when she
attended a graduation ceremony
in Tallaght and was trapped in her
car for over two hours.
However, she feels that targeting the head of State is a step too
far.
“People are fully entitled to
make their views known on any
public issue, but this kind of behaviour towards our President is
entirely unacceptable,” she said.
“In our Constitution, the office
of President is above day to day
politics, and I’m sure the overwhelming majority of Irish people
would deplore this conduct.”
Dublin North West TD, John Lyons (Lab), who attended the presidential event at Coláiste Eoin, also
condemned the protest, which he
described as “aggressive”.
“I attended the event along
with a large number of former
students, staff and public representatives,” he said.
“The actions of the protestors
were completely out of kilter with
the very positive event being held
in the school. The President was
speaking at a celebration of 50
years of Coláiste Eoin and highlighted the positive contribution
of the school to the local community.
“The protestors, I believe, do
not have the support of the vast
majority of people in Finglas, who
are disgusted by the abusive and
aggressive behaviour shown to
our President in the community.
“The President is above politics and there is nothing to be
achieved by hurling abusive comments and targeting the many
community events and celebrations he attends.
“All too often Finglas is unfairly
or negatively portrayed. On a day
when there was an opportunity to
celebrate the positives in the com-
munity, it is disappointing that a
very small number of protestors
have taken away from that.”
Cllr Paul McAuliffe (FF) condemned the protest as “ill-judged”
and claimed it caused offence to
the school and its community.
“The protest at Coláiste Eoin
was in marked contrast to those
marches that took place before
Christmas when thousands of people protested peacefully against
the unfair scheme of charges and
the super quango Irish Water,” he
added.
“Whatever your views, personalised name calling to anyone is
offensive and borders on bullying.
It has no place in a democracy. I
accept the absolute right to protest but that comes with a responsibility to act respectfully to local
people and their invited guests.”

A NEW pilot scheme launched by the Dublin Simon Community
and Finglas based Dogs Trust is helping homeless dog owners stay
with their four legged friends.
There are a number of homeless dog owners in Dublin who
choose to sleep on the streets
rather than take up an offer of
sheltered accommodation without their pooch, who is often their
best friend and companion.
Demise Hyland is one of them.
He had lived on the streets of
Dublin for a number of months
with his dog Millie because he
wasn’t allowed keep her with him
overnight in sheltered accommodation.
However, both dog and owner
now have beds to sleep in thanks
to the pilot scheme that was
launched last December.
The scheme is the first of its
kind in Ireland and sees Dogs
Trust providing free preventative
treatments for Millie such as vaccinations, kennel cough immunisation, flea and worming treat-
ments and microchipping so that
the Dublin Simon Community can
allow her to stay overnight alongside Demise.
“Dogs Trust feel allowances
need to be made for people who
have dogs and find themselves
homeless,” said head of communications, Kathrina Bentley.
“Sadly most accommodation
providers in Ireland operate a ‘no
dogs’ policy meaning that many
homeless people are denied access to shelter and support, simply because they have a dog.”

Community planned the scheme
for over a year before rolling it
out in December and they’re delighted that it’s now starting to
pay dividends.
“We were so thrilled to see
all our hard work paying off last
December when we saw our first
service user, Demise, settling in
to his room safely with his gorgeous dog Millie, just in time for
Christmas,” Kathrina said.
“Millie has been a great talking
point amongst the residents and
staff, which helped create a really
homely atmosphere in the centre
over the Christmas period.
“Everybody is making her [Millie] feel very welcome indeed. We
hope that a successful pilot case
will encourage other accommodation providers to accept homeless people with dogs.
“The bond between dog and
owner and the lengths a person
will go to in order not to be parted from their canine companion
is truly unique.
“We are honoured to be part
of such a special scheme and recognise that most homeless people struggle to afford even basic
veterinary care for their dog, and
hope in time, to help more homeless dog owners’ access veterinary treatment, without the worry of being faced with a bill they
can’t afford.”

A compelling
argument for
gender quotas
in Irish politics

IT WAS hardly his intention but Independent TD
Michael Lowry may have unwittingly made the
case for gender quotas in Irish politics.
The former Fine Gael Government minister has
spent the past few decades embroiled in controversy. Not that it has affected his popularity – Mick
can seemingly do no wrong with the good people
of Tipperary North who must see something in him
that eludes us ignorant Dublin Jackeens.
Lowry was back in the headlines last week for all
the wrong reasons when he passed the Taoiseach a
note in the Dáil seeking the reappointment of a former PR advisor to the board of the National Roads
Authority – a grubby little gesture in itself that led
to accusations of cronyism. But the fact that the
note was infused with such nod-nod, wink-wink
‘sexist’ language made it worse.
Lowry’s flippant comment that the woman
– who by all accounts is an intelligent and capable
candidate for the position – was “not bad looking
either” could have come straight from the lovely
girls’ contest in ‘Father Ted’. An unrepentant Lowry
denied accusations of cronyism and sexism. His
remarks, he said, were “unnecessary and lighthearted”.
Naturally, it’s all the fault of the politically correct media. Can’t a politician compliment a woman
on a nice dress or a pair of shoes?
Lowry is not the only TD to have been accused
of sexism in politics. Padraig Flynn damaged Brian
Lenihan’s Presidential election campaign in 1990
by making unfortunate comments about Mary
Robinson’s “new-found emphasis on her family”.

himself in glory either with his “that’s women for
you” put down of Nora Owen in the Dáil in the
early ‘90s. There are more recent examples, too. It
wasn’t so long ago that Mick Wallace landed himself in trouble with mna na hEireann when he was
overheard referring to Fine Gael TD Mary Mitchell
O’Connor as “Miss Piggy”, leading to much sniggering at the back of the classroom by his buddies in
the manner of Beavis and Butthead.
We also had the embarrassing spectacle of Fine
Gael TD Tom Barry pulling a female colleague, Áine
Collins, onto his lap during a late night Dáil debate
on abortion in 2013.
Even that champion of equality, Senator David
Norris, came under fire for using inappropriate language when he accused Fine Gael’s Regina Doherty
of speaking “out of her fanny”.
Despite there being a handful of women in
senior Government positions - such as Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald and Tánaiste Joan Burton
- the fact remains that Irish politics is still largely a
boys’ club dominated by a macho culture.
It would be a pity if women were deterred from
entering political life because of the behaviour
of a minority of TDs as they can make a valuable
contribution. Whether you agree with her or not,
Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald is one of the best
performers in the Dáil. And rising star Averil Power
brings some much-needed energy to the Seanad,
not to mention Fianna Fáil.
Michael Lowry may only have been speaking for
himself but it was a telling insight into how women
are still often judged on their looks rather than (or
in addition to) their abilities.
In the next general election, at least 30 per cent
of candidates will have to be women or parties
will face State funding cuts. It remains up to the
electorate to decide if the imbalance should be
redressed in the next Dáil. While there is still an
argument for voting for candidates on the basis of
their credentials rather than their gender, there
will be some formidable women on the ballot paper
who will deserve to be elected on merit alone.
The Dáil should be an inclusive workplace for
women, not some political version of Jurassic Park
where species we once thought were extinct still
roam free.

VERY parent wants the best for their

THE Garda text alert system that was piloted in Santry and Beaumont last year is to be rolled out in Ballymun and Glasnevin over
the coming weeks.
Under the system Gardaí send
texts warning of suspected criminal activity in an area to an appointed member of the community, who then forwards it on to
neighbours.
It can be used to alert a community of behaviour such as
suspicious individuals hanging
around or knocking door-to-door.
A text is sent out to a community contact when a member of the
public reports an incident that’s
verified by Gardaí and deemed to
be a possible threat to the public.
The contact then forwards the
alert to neighbours signed up to
the Garda scheme. Communities wishing to have the scheme
implemented in their area need
to establish a group and contact
their local Garda station.
The scheme was officially
launched in September 2013 and
so far over a million text alerts
have been sent out to more than
100,000 people nationwide.
Local councillor Noel Rock (FG)
said he was “delighted” that text
alerts are to be rolled out in Ballymun and Glasnevin.
“As a Peace Commissioner, I
constantly liaise with local Gardaí
on a variety of issues and have
been pushing for an expansion of
crime prevention text alerts for
over a year now,” he said.
“It is my understanding that it
is now open for residents to apply right across the Ballymun and
Glasnevin areas and that, if they
wish to do so, residents can email
[email protected]
or ring Community Garda Anita
on 01-6664420 to sign up.”
Local urban text alert schemes
were originally piloted in Santry
and Beaumont. Cllr Rock said his
own local residents’ association
had established one.
“I know their value first hand,”
he added. “I hope that this will
contribute to diminish crime locally, as I fully believe we need to
be vigilant, tough on crime and
tough on the causes of crime locally.”
Ballymun councillor Noeleen
Reilly (SF) described the text
alert scheme as a “modern day
approach to crime prevention”.
“More often than not burglaries can occur in clusters, so If a
member of the public contacts
the Gardaí about a particular incident, this information will then
be verified and an email or text
sent out for further circulation,”
she said.
“Every week I am contacted by
someone who has had their property broken into. It is one of the
most intrusive things than can
happen to a person.
“I think the operation of the
text alert scheme will certainly
make people feel safer in their
home.”

Students urged to be engineers
A NUMBER of events are taking place across
the Northside to mark Engineers Week, which
takes place nationwide from February 8-14.
The week is part of an annual campaign designed to inspire the next generation of engineers
and excite second level students about the possibilities of a career in the sector.
On Monday, February 9, from 9.45am to 1pm,
Dunsink Observatory will be hosting an event on
Engineering, Electronics and the European Space
Agency (ESA). During the three hour visit, second
level students will learn electronics skills at a soldering workshop and take a unique, behind the
scenes tour of the famous observatory.
They’ll also take part in space based discussions
with onsite experts and there’ll be web live links
to ESA staff, including Laurence O’Rourke, Science
Operations Coordinator of the Rosetta Mission.
On Thursday, February 12, there’ll be a workshop at Blanchardstown Library to demonstrate
the importance of engineering to everyday lives.
During the event students will be introduced to
engineering concepts, processes and commonly
used techniques with hands-on activities including
engineering challenges and experiments.
On Friday, February 13 Dublin City Public Libraries will be hosting a talk on Bridges Over The Liffey
at the Central Library at the Ilac Shopping Centre.
All the above events are free but pre-booking is
essential as places are limited.

Local crime tackled at
Finglas Safety Forum
OVER 40 people attended the
first Finglas Safety Forum public meeting of the year on January 27.
The meeting for residents of
Finglas East was held in St Canice’s Boys School and locals were
given an opportunity to discuss
issues of crime, disorder, anti social behaviour and safety with the
appropriate authorities.
The meetings chaired by Finglas Safety Forum are attended
by An Garda Síochána and Dublin
City Council who address Issues
raised and give feedback at the
next gathering.
Topics presented by the public
last month included anti social
behaviour from younger members of the community, parking
problems and speeding issues.
Gardai detailed recent drug
seizures in the area and gave
statistics on crime figures for the
area over the last four months.
The Finglas Safety Forum is

Drug Task Force and coordinated
by its community development
worker, Louise Butler.

Donations from Centra and Supervalu stores coupled with a
Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) grant has allowed
the upgrade work to be carried out at Dublin City Council’s 36 unit
Sandyhill Gardens residential housing complex.
The upgrade scheme is part of a nationwide programme that
has seen Centra and SuperValu stores invest €1.8 million in the
reduction of energy consumption.
This has allowed them to pass on over €800,000 in savings to
local community energy projects this year.
Work carried out at Sandyhill Gardens included external wall
insulation, new windows and doors, new gas boilers and heating
controls, attic insulation and new CFL bulbs.
Speaking on behalf of its retail partners in SuperValu and
Centra, Martin Keleher, Managing Director of Musgrave said: “Our
retail partners were delighted to be able to support Ballymun
housing.
“They not only work hard to provide a top class shopping experience to their shoppers but also strive towards creating greener
and vibrant local communities.”

New night café will
help rough sleepers
HOMELESS services in Dublin received a boost last month with the
opening of a new night café for people rough sleeping.
In December, the Government
endorsed a 20-point action plan
to respond to the key concerns
of homelessness, particularly in
Dublin.
Dublin City Council, as the lead
authority for homelessness in the
region, is playing a central role in
the implementation of these actions.
This is being achieved in conjunction with the other Dublin
local authorities, the Health Service Executive and state-funded
homeless services.
One of the core actions outlined in the action plan was the
setting-up of a new night café to
support persons who are rough
sleeping.
The service duly opened on
Wednesday, January 21, at Merchants Quay, and will operate
seven nights a week from 11pm
until 7.30am.
The night café will be managed
and operated by Merchants Quay
Ireland, who provide a range of
services to people experiencing
homelessness and drug use.
Every effort is being made
to accommodate those who are
rough sleeping in the Dublin region in the first instance.
The night café provides a service for persons, who cannot or
will not access emergency homeless accommodation.
The service includes tea/coffee
and a light meal; information and
advice; showers and clothing;
brief interventions on addiction
and mental health; and referral
to support services for accommodation, treatment, health and
social services.
Independent TD for Dublin Bay
North, Terence Flanagan, welcomed the café’s opening.
“It will provide much-needed
support and services to the city’s
homeless,” said Deputy Flanagan.
“There have been some bit-
terly cold nights this winter and
I am relieved that people who are
sleeping rough will have a warm
and welcoming place to spend
their nights if they so wish.
“Although the opening of the
cafe is a positive step, much more
needs to be done and tackling
homelessness needs to remain a
priority for Government.”
Dublin Central TD Joe Costello
(Lab) also welcomed the new facility.
“This opening is part of a host
of new measures spearheaded
by my colleague, the Minister for
Environment and Local Government, Alan Kelly to tackle homelessness in Dublin,” said Deputy
Costello.
Paul Kimmage signs
up for Irish Hospice
Foundation challenge
SPORTS journalist and former professional cyclist Paul Kimmage
will be saying ‘Ciao’ to Italy this summer as he gets in the saddle to
support the Irish Hospice Foundation’s 10th Cycle Challenge.
Kimmage will be pulling on his jersey and retracing some of the
miles he covered in the iconic Giro d’Italia he raced as a professional on the Genoa to Rome cycle. Registration for the event closes on
March 13.
The Kingspan sponsored cycle, which has raised €1.3 million for
the IHF since it started in 2009, will take place from June 21-27
with a stunning Italian backdrop.
Beginning at the coast, the cyclists will challenge themselves to
cycle 600km in five days, wheeling from Genoa to Rome and taking
in famous Tuscany landscapes, medieval villages and breathtaking
coastal views along the way.

gets optimised
A LOCAL taxi firm in Ballymun
is backing a call for small Irish
companies to apply for a programme that helps them get
online.
Many smaller companies have
either a weak or no internet
presence as creating and maintaining a website can be costly
and time consuming.
However, Ballymun based
Dublin Taxi Transfers, an agency that allows customers book a
taxi from Dublin airport to destinations all around Ireland, has
found that needn’t be the case.
The company even provides a
full meet and greet in arrivals at
Dublin Airport so a good website
is essential for generating business and allowing customers to
book their journey in advance.
Last year, Dublin Taxi Transfers successfully applied for the
OPTIMISE e-Commerce Website
Development programme, a
scheme that provides consultation, training and e-commerce
development support.
The programme helped them
develop their online strategy
and its the now open again for
applications from other small
businesses looking to optimise
their existing online presence
and grow their business via the
Internet.
It’s organized by the IE Domain Registry (IEDR), which is
responsible for Ireland’s official
Internet address .ie.
This year its OPTIMISE eCommerce programme will help
a further 15 small firms to improve their e-commerce capabilities or get online in 2015.

they’re missing out on a share
of the €6 billion spent online by
Irish consumers annually, over
60% of which goes to businesses abroad.
IEDR believes that its model
of working shoulder-to-shoulder with business owners and
service providers through a
dedicated programme such as
OPTIMISE addresses the issue
more effectively than merely
cheerleading from the sidelines.
And it’s a belief that Minister
for Communications, Energy
and Natural Resources, Alex
White shares.
“Our return to economic
growth, renewed consumer confidence, and the extra money
– albeit modest – that is now
finding its way into people’s pay
packets all provide opportunities for Irish business,” he said.
“The growth rate of the digital
part of the economy is about 20
per cent each year. That’s why
the Statement of Government
Priorities put an emphasis on
the digital economy, because it
has huge potential to help sustain and accelerate the recovery
in jobs and incomes that is now
underway.”
David Curtin, Chief Executive
of the IE Domain Registry, is urging businesses to apply for this
year’s OPTIMISE programme.
“IEDR is proud to have helped
60 small firms to embrace ecommerce and find their niche
online,” he said.
“Now in its fifth year, OPTIMISE is evolving too and we are

Traffic back to boom time levels

Taisce has urged immediate
action on Dublin’s congestion
problem, which it says has returned to 2008 levels.
An Taisce warns the consequences of traffic congestion
include negative impacts on economic productivity, public transport and air quality.
According to the agency,
greenhouse gas emissions rose
by 2.1 per cent in 2013 over 2012
levels, which jeopardises EU
2020 Climate targets that Ireland
has committed to.
An Taisce has submitted measures to be taken to help combat
the crisis including a review of
future transport investment, suspension of the M7 Co Kildare lane
widening scheme and urgent
short-term action on congestion.
While it welcomed proposals
for major public transport infrastructure put forward in the
North Dublin Transport Study, An
Taisce called for an urgent review
of transport planning for the remainder of the greater Dublin
area.
In particular it called for Dart
Underground to be made a priority, as it integrates services

Dublin Airport is flying high
as it celebrates 75th birthday
DUBLIN Airport celebrated its 75th birthday on January 19, with
435 million passengers having being welcomed through its doors
since the first day it opened.
The airport commenced business on Friday, January 19, 1940
with a single flight to Liverpool’s
Speke Airport. Shortly after
9am, an Aer Lingus Lockheed 14
aircraft took off from the grass
runway close to the original passenger terminal, which was still
being built at that time.
With war raging throughout
Europe, the airport was effectively mothballed for the next
five years. Dublin Airport’s only
service was to Liverpool or occasionally to Manchester’s Barton
Aerodrome. Aer Lingus had been
operating from Baldonnel from
1936 and had moved its operations to the new Dublin Airport
in January 1940.
Dublin Airport’s first scheduled
service to London commenced in
November 1945, with a two and
a half hour direct flight to Croydon Airport and airmail services
were added in 1946.
Connections to other British
cities and continental European
destinations were added and in
April 1958, Dublin Airport got
its first scheduled transatlantic
service to New York.
Dublin Airport managing director Vincent Harrison said:
“Dublin Airport was established
to connect Ireland with the world
and 75 years on it is still fulfilling
that original goal.
“In the 75 years since that inaugural flight, Dublin Airport has
welcomed 435 million passengers, boosting Irish trade, tourism and investment and bringing
together generations of families
and friends.”
Dublin Airport’s route network
has grown substantially in recent
years and now offers customers
direct services to Britain, North
America, Continental Europe, the
Middle East and Africa.
“This year, as we celebrate
Dublin Airport’s 75 birthday, we
continue to expand and improve
the operation to offer our customers more destinations and
additional choice and flexibility,
with 14 new services already announced for 2015,” Mr Harrison
said.
To mark its 75th birthday,
Dublin Airport, provided musical
entertainment from the 1940s
and 1950s in both terminals during its special day.

Dublin Airport will also be celebrating its birthday on social

Work at Dublin Airport, which
was originally known as Collinstown Airport, began in 1937 after
the site was selected as the location for the capital’s new civilian
airport.
Collinstown had been a base
for the British Royal Air Force before the creation of the Irish Free
State in 1922, but the old military
airfield had fallen into disrepair
by the late 1930s.
The centrepiece of the new airport was its passenger terminal,
which was designed by Desmond
FitzGerald and a team of young
architects.
The original terminal, which
was designed to cater for up
to 100,000 passengers per
year, won several architectural
awards.
Its tiered design, viewing
decks and balconies are reminiscent of an ocean liner, which was
a common theme for airports of
the 1930s.
FitzGerald’s terminal was the
key passenger facility at Dublin Airport until the early 1970s
and part of the original terminal
is still used today as a boarding
gate area.
“The designers of the old terminal should be praised for creating a wonderful modern facility that passengers enjoyed for
many decades and that remains
an icon of the early days of Irish
commercial aviation,” Mr Harri-

Initially, air travel was the preserve of the wealthy. But with
growing incomes and additional
routes, passenger numbers increased and by 1963, Dublin Airport’s passenger numbers had
exceeded one million in a single
year for the first time.
In the 1950s and 1960s the airport was a destination in its own
right, as people travelled out to
Collinstown to see the planes and
to dine in its restaurant, which
was said to be one of the best in
the country.

were popular and Dublin Airport
featured regularly in postcards
of the time.

Remembering the kidnapping
of Republican James Connolly

IN JANUARY 1916, a historic alliance was formed between the
Irish Citizen Army and the Irish
Republican Brotherhood (IRB)
at a secret meeting in Dublin.
This important meeting, which
united nationalist and socialist
republican forces in preparation
for an insurrection, laid the foundations for the 1916 Rising.
The meeting, which began on
January 19, lasted three days and
has sometimes been dramatically
referred to as ‘the kidnapping of
James Connolly’.
James Connolly was the towering figure of the Irish Revolutionary movement in the early 20th
century.
A committed Marxist, he was
convinced that the outbreak of
the European War provided a
perfect opportunity to strike a
blow for Irish freedom and he
was determined to ensure that
the opportunity was not lost.
On assuming command of the
Irish Citizen Army in 1914, Connolly, a former British soldier, set
about turning the workers’ defence force into a disciplined republican army that was prepared
to fight alone if necessary.
As the war waged on, Connolly
became concerned that the larger nationalist and republican organisations had failed to realise
the significance of the opportu-

nity presented to republicans.
He began to use the pages
of his radical newspaper, ‘The
Workers Republic’, to popularise
his ideas and openly call for an
armed uprising in Ireland.
Connolly set an Irish insurrection in the context of what he
hoped would be a series of revolutions by the European working
class against the war and Imperialism.
Using ‘The Workers Republic’,
he set out his platform and began
to win support in wider republican circles, particularly amongst
rank and file members of the IRB
and the Irish Volunteers.
Connolly’s open calls for revolution began to worry the Military
Council of the IRB who had been
secretly planning a rebellion.
The Military Council feared
that the Citizen Army would
strike alone and would bring the
might of the British Empire down
on nationalist Ireland before they
were ready to stage a rebellion.
Following a meeting of the IRB’s
Supreme Council on January 16 in
Clontarf Town Hall, which definitively decided to stage a rising,
the Military Council decided to
make contact with Connolly, take
him into their confidence and ask
him to take part in the rebellion.
Connolly was invited to a
meeting with the Military Council which took place in Dolphin’s
Barn.
Due to the nature of the meeting many of the details are still
shrouded in mystery. Connolly
told no one where he was going
which led to his comrades believing he had disappeared or had
been arrested. This uncertainly
gave rise to the idea that Connolly had been kidnapped by the
IRB.
A unit of volunteers, under the
command of Ned Daly, had been
mobilised to arrest Connolly if he
refused to meet with the council.
However, it was never called into
action.
It is now widely agreed that
Connolly willingly met the IRB
and talk of a kidnap are dramatic
rumours. The length of the meeting shows it was an honest and
frank discussion between the two
sides.
The IRB outlined their plans to
Connolly and he committed the
ICA to take part. By the conclu-
sion of the three-day meeting,
Easter Sunday, April 23, 1916, had
been set for the Rising.
James Connolly had been coopted onto the Military Council
and Ireland’s most advanced
revolutionary forces in Ireland,
the IRB and ICA, agreed to work
together to secure Irish freedom.
This alliance, more than any
other event, ensured that the
1916 Rising would take place and
it changed the course of Irish history.

Rosanna’s wedding gift to
ISPCA will benefit animals

recently brought along her
prized Pomeranian pooches,
Ted and Leo, to the ISPCA
National Animal Centre to
officially open the new ISPCA Pampered Pooches Dog
Grooming Room.
Rosanna and husband, Wesley, decided that in lieu of wedding gifts at their nuptials, they
wanted to make a difference to
help cruelly treated, neglected
and abused dogs and donated a
fantastic €3,320 to the ISPCA to
help animals in their care.
Rosanna said: “As huge animal
lovers, Wes and I were delighted
to raise much-needed money for
the ISPCA through our wedding
fund.
“Rather than buying us gifts,
we requested that our friends
and family donate any amount,
big or small.
“They all loved the idea as
they know how passionate we
are about dogs. We couldn’t be
happier that the €3,320 raised is
going straight into a brand new
grooming facility to help keep
the centre’s rescued dogs clean
and healthy.”
ISPCA centre manager Eva Ellis said the centre was delighted
with the couple’s generosity.
“We’re very happy to put the
funds raised towards a fully kitted out grooming room, helping
many neglected dogs admitted
by ISPCA Inspectors suffering
from skin ailments and grooming neglect,” she added.
“This dedicated space will
provide a suitable area to treat
the animals in our care assisting in their rehabilitation before
being responsibly rehomed. We
are extremely grateful to Rosanna and Wesley for their continued support.”

dry to test out the new grooming equipment. ISPCA staff
and volunteers were kept busy
grooming many pooches from
the kennels so they could enjoy

Leftover food is vital
for birds in the winter
FEEDING birds is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to
see wildlife really close up.
In winter, birds may have difficulty finding natural foods such as
berries, insects, seeds, worms and fruit, so any food you put out
during these cold months will help birds survive until the spring.
Most kitchen leftovers can be used to feed birds. Bread can be
crumbled up and scattered - moisten very dry bread first as it
could cause dehydration.
Biscuits provide a rich source of fat and cooked rice, pasta and
pastry are packed with starch. Potatoes can
be boiled, baked, roasted or mashed, and
cheese - crumbled or grated - will be very
popular with robins and wrens.
Fat is a wonderful source of energy so
cut bacon rinds, fat from chops or blocks
of suet into cubes.
Fruit, such as windfalls or bruised apples and pears, go down a treat with blackbirds and thrushes. It may also attract winter
visitors from Scandinavia such as fieldfares and redwings.
Grapes, sultanas, raisins and some artificial sweeteners can be
very toxic to dogs and some other wild/domestic animals so these
foods should be put on a raised bird table and never scattered on
the ground.
Fresh coconut in the shell is a great favourite with tits. Drill two
holes in one end and drain off the milk. Saw the coconut in half and
hang outside.
Never put out dissected coconut as it swells up inside a bird’s
stomach.
Peanuts are rich in fat and attract nuthatches, siskins, great
spotted woodpeckers, tits, greenfinches and house sparrows.
Peanuts may be naturally contaminated with an invisible toxin
so make sure you buy peanuts of guaranteed quality. Use a darning
needle to thread nuts in their shells onto string.

The Dog of the Week is Bruno, a seven-year-old crossbreed. Poor

cars registered reached 96,344 in

tips for the garden

I WENT for my seed order this
week, which is always an enjoyable experience for me since it
marks the official start of the
growing year.
I am not a naturally acquisitive person and I only go shopping for clothes and things when
I absolutely have to (and I will be
grumpy for the entire time I’m
there), but I absolutely love ordering seeds.
In fact, I love it so much that
pretty much every year I go dramatically OTT, ordering way more
than I need.
How could you not, what with
visions of exciting food growing
projects swirling around in your
head? So many possibilities! Such
wonderful names!
A friend of GIY’s, Bill King, put
up a cartoon recently on twitter
that seemed to neatly sum up my
problem, saying that the short
dark winter days cause me to
suffer from SAD – not seasonal
affective disorder, but Seed Acquisition Disorder!
You might recall that last year
around this time, the roof blew
off my potting shed – my seed
collection was collateral damage
from that incident and so I literally had to start from scratch, ordering seeds of every vegetable
and herb that I grow.
The order came to an eyewatering €300 – ouch! In my
defence it’s important to look
on these things as a good investment, which of course it is.
I’ve never accurately worked
out the value of produce coming from the veg patch in a year,
but some research I found a few
years back indicated an approximate tenfold return. So by that
rule of thumb, €300 worth of
seeds could yield €3,000 worth
of food.
And if that seems fanciful, bear
in mind that a single courgette
plant yields over 40 courgettes
(worth €40) from a seed worth
about 30 cent - that equates to
produce worth 130 times the
value of the seed!
And of course, that doesn’t
take into account the incredible
investment that food growing is
in your health and wellbeing (and
that of your family).
Anyway, given that I had loads
of seeds left over from last year,
my recent order was a more conservative affair – about 30 packets of seeds coming to about €60.
So that’s not bad.

next month – I always like to try a
couple of new varieties each year
to mix things up a bit.
So this year on top of some
tried and tested varieties from
last year (Rosada, oval shaped
cherry; Tigerella, striped; Sungold, a wonder tomato, my favourite; Black Russian – a bit of
a novelty, black tomato; Lucky
Leprechaun; a bush variety Irish
heirloom dating back to the early
1900s from Irish Seed Savers).
I am ordering a couple of
new ones from Brown Envelope
Seeds: Sungella is bred from the
mighty Sungold but is apparently
more split resistant and slightly
bigger; the wonderfully named
Costoluto Fiorentino – a big red
ribbed tomato from Italy with a
good old-fashioned flavour; and
Alicante, which produces masses
of well flavoured good sized red
Before you get your seeds
on order for the 2015 growing
season, it makes sense to sort
through the seeds you already
have to see what’s usable. I am
often surprised to discover just
how many packets of seeds I have
left over from the previous year.
If you mind your seeds carefully (re-sealing after use) and
store them in a cool, dry place
they should be fine to re-use this
year as long as they are still in
date. Discard any seeds that are
out of date.

The path is just wide enough
to take a wheelbarrow and allow
you to kneel comfortably. But it’s
narrow enough that you are not
wasting valuable ground.
The bed is narrow enough that
you can access the centre from
both sides (so you don’t need to
step on the soil, EVER! Walking
on beds compacts the soil and
impacts fertility).
The bed width also suits the
spacing for most vegetables - ie.
you will get three rows of potatoes in a bed this width and five
rows of lettuce. Make the soil in
the beds around 6-8 inches high.
You can leave the paths as bare
soil if you want - it will need to be
hoed regularly to prevent a buildup of weeds, but on the plus side
you can access soil in the path if
you need it for earthing up in the
bed.
Alternatively you could put in
a more permanent (weed-free!)
path with mypex and pea gravel
or bark mulch etc.
