About Our Guest preacher - F. Morgan Roberts
F. Morgan Roberts is Pastor Emeritus of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church
of Pittsburgh. During his fifty years of pastoral ministry, he served churches in
Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. He was an
adjunct member of the faculty of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary,
supervising the Field Education Program, working with doctoral candidates,
and teaching the advanced preaching practicum. He is a member of the Society
of Biblical Literature. His various publications include: Are There Horses In
Heaven?, the recently published, 28 Hymns to Sing before You Die, and various
chapters in multi-volume works on theology and biblical studies. He and his wife,
Nora, enjoy their blended family of 9 children, 30 grandchildren, and 8 great
grandchildren.

Beauchamp has two very
able partners at COP: Jonathan
Spivey, Sanctuary Organist, and
Yoko Spivey, Sanctuary Worship
Coordinator. She directs gifted
groups of those in the congregation
who enjoy singing and are willing to
devote considerable time to practice
- allowing the rest of us to listen to
them many, many Sundays during each year. The choirs she directs are: The
Jubilee Handbell Choir; the Chancel Choir; the Praise & and Glory Choir; the
Sarasota Young Voices; and the Sarasota Choral Society. She oversees The
Sounds of Glory Orchestra; and she encourages the learning of Sign Language
-by those who enjoy performing while the choir is singing.
As COP’s Music Director, Genevieve regularly
invites talented teens and other gifted musicians
to perform during the Sanctuary service most
Sundays, such as George Nickson who played his
Marimba on January 25. George is a percussionist
and is known for his great versatility and virtuosity.
In April 2012, he was appointed Principal
Percussionist of the Sarasota Orchestra.
We look forward to upcoming music events such as: Noyes Fludde (Noah’s Flood)
by Benjamin Britten on March 1, which will be performed at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00
p.m. in the Sanctuary. This production will showcase singers, an orchestra,
children, and a large ark! “A Tale of Two Pianos” at 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary
on March 29 featuring Genevieve Beauchamp and Jonathan Spivey on two 9 foot
Steinway pianos.
Having had an opportunity to enjoy looking at Genevieve’s Facebook collection of
photographs, the balance of this Spotlight will share some of these photographs
following this report on what Genevieve also does as Artistic Director of the

position she has held since
2009. In addition, she serves
as the Founder and Artistic
Director of Sarasota Young
Voices (SYV), a community
children’s choir that serves
Sarasota
and
Manatee
Counties. Both groups look
upon COP as their “home.”
The 70th consecutive annual
production of the Christmas
portion of G.F. Handel’s MESSIAH - this Sacred Oratorio took place at Church
of the Palms on December 6, 2014, with four world class soloists; Dr. Jonathan
Spivey, organ; Live Orchestra; and a special appearance by Sarasota Young
Voices. A reception to celebrate its 70th anniversary followed the performance,
with its President Paul Weber and its Artistic Director Genevieve Beauchamp
cutting the 70th anniversary cake, which was generously donated by Publix
Supermarkets. Another Spotlight on COP’s Music Ministry later in 2015 will
showcase the 70th Messiah performance and other photographs related to COP’s
Music Ministry.
The photographs in this Spotlight show the 69th performance of MESSIAH at
Church of the Palms by the Sarasota Choral Society and the Sarasota Young
Voices; Genevieve conducting the Sarasota Young Voices in the famed Cathedral
of Notre Dame in Paris (a special opportunity which happened this past June);
a similar performance conducted by Genevieve at the American Church in Paris
shows Genevieve and the Sarasota Young Voices standing in front of the elegant
church organ; and finally a delightful poster shows the Summer Day Camp at
Church of the Palms for Sarasota Young Voices.

Spaghetti Dinner & Registration
Fun times ahead at the Early Childhood Center!
Wednesday, February 11 • 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Join in on the fun by attending the COP/ECC dinner on Wednesday,
February 11. Dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. This event is for
our church community and families in the Early Childhood Center, who will
have an opportunity to meet, share a meal and share in the joy that the
children in the program bring. There will be special entertainment and
an art exhibit. Registration for the 2015-2016 school year is here.
Current part-time preschool students, siblings, and church members may
register at any time. Opportunity for 3 and 4’s is available. The ECC is a
participant in the Florida Department of Education VPK (Voluntary Pre
Kindergarten) Program and follows the September 1 Kindergarten cutoff for placement

Wycliffe Bible Translators & Campus Crusade’s
JESUS Film Production

The Mission Committee is inviting everyone to visit Wycliffe
in Orlando, the Wycliffe Bible Translator’s Discovery
Center and Campus Crusade International. You will have an
opportunity to see first-hand what our church has supported
for the last 9 years. Since Church of the Palms has sponsored two JESUS Film for two
people groups in Nigeria, this will be an opportunity to visit Wycliffe as well as see

Family Promise is coming to Church of the Palms!
Family Promise brings the faith community together to
provide food, shelter, and support services for homeless
families. Over 40% of the homeless in Sarasota are families
and this amazing program has an 80% success rate of getting
families back into permanent housing. We have an opportunity
as a congregation to, for one week every three months, play a
critical role in helping these families get back on their feet. We
need volunteers the week of March 22 to help us set-up and break-down, to provide
supplies, to provide meals and to serve as hosts to our guests. For more information,

This is what graduates of the S.H.A.P.E. Class are saying. Invest six hours over just
two days and find how you have been shaped by God to serve others. In the S.H.A.P.E.
Class, you will learn how you are equipped for the service of Christ by listening to
biblical teaching, doing self-assessment exercises, learning how to interpret these
self-assessments, and having the opportunity to discuss them in a small-group.
This class meets in the Education Bldg, Room 206, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on
Friday, February 20 and continues Saturday morning, February 21. One hour of
preparation is required before attending the class. You may pick up the workbook in

Your Story
For the week of February 8, 2015
Devotion: Use this resource at home to guide your household’s daily
devotions. You can do this alone, as a couple, as a family; in the morning,
during the day, or at night. Find a routine that works best for you.
Pray: Light a candle and open your devotion time with a prayer.
Jesus who performs miracles, open our eyes to see the miracles you
perform on this earth each and every day. Stir in us wonder and awe at
the things you accomplish in this world. Amen.
Reflect: Reflect on the key verses from Sunday’s reading.
And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the
broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five
thousand men, besides women and children. Matthew 14:20-21
Study: Study the reading and consider the background.
Miracles and healings were not unusual in Jesus’ day. Many prophets and
healers were able to perform them. The miracles and healings of Jesus
drew attention to Jesus, and Jesus used those opportunities to tell people
how much God loved them. What set Jesus apart from other miracle
workers and healers was that he genuinely had been given the authority to
perform them in God’s name. Jesus was also the only one ever to be raised
from the dead.
The interactions between Jesus and his disciples is of interest in these
accounts. First, Jesus’ initial command to them was to feed the crowds
themselves. Perhaps he was trying to tell them that they had it within
them to call upon God for help in performing such a miracle. Second,
Jesus invited Peter to walk on the water with him. In both stories, Jesus
tried to show that the disciples had been given God’s authority to perform
miracles, to preach, teach, and heal, just as he himself was doing.

Do one thing this week that honors the gifts God has given you that you
have been reluctant to claim or use. Share your plan with someone who
can hold you accountable for following through with your actions.
