Be a Santa to a Senior becomes Santa to 1, 313 seniors!!!!
Santa, with the help of Home Instead Senior Care’s
Community Program and the local office, once again
retained the spirit of the Christmas season and the
pleasure of giving to others by bringing Be A Santa
to A Senior here. The community services and individual citizens gave gifts and time to ensure that our
seniors had a special Christmas season. The lives of
1,313 seniors in six different counties were touched
and our community once again came through with
gifts, monetary donations, and their gift of time to
reach out to our senior community.
As Betty Keane, BASTAS event coordinator explains:
“The purpose of Be a Santa to a Senior is to spread
holiday cheer to seniors who are financially challenged, shut in, or lonely and who might otherwise
not have any gifts this holiday season.” After the
needs of Seniors was assessed and their needs were
met by individuals and services who wanted to help,
the whole event ended with the help of volunteers
from across the county in one huge gift wrapping
party on December 13.
With the support of many of Santa’s elves and under the direction of Betty Keane and our local Home
Instead Senior Care this year’s BASTAS Program:
• They collected, catalogued and sorted 13,171 gift
items into 1,313 gift bags.
• The number of gift recipients (1,313) increased
77% over last year’s 740 senior recipients.
• Not only were there the gift bags, but gift cards
totaling close to $4,000 were delivered.
• An additional $4000 in cash and checks was
raised for Fayette County’s Meals on Wheels
Program.
Fayette Senior Services gives a big thank you and
a round of applause for the efforts through Home
Instead Senior Care Community Program and Betty
Keane for making so many of our seniors feel loved
and appreciated this Christmas season. Let’s keep
this spirit of giving and love going throughout the year
and be encouraged through this wonderful project to
find ways all year long to help others in need.

Members can enjoy Fayette Senior
Services Life Enrichment Center
activities in two great locations:
ABOUT US
Since 1978, Fayette Senior Services, Inc., (FSS) an independent, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, has been providing a wide array of life -enriching services to Fayette County residents age 50 and better. Fayette
County, Georgia, is home to one of the fastest growing senior populations
in metro Atlanta – and the age 60+ population segment is projected to grow
an astonishing 450% by 2040. This statistic alone makes our mission — to
make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of older adults — all the more critical. By fostering independence,
improving quality of life, and enhancing the community connection, the
programs and services we provide are an essential part of our community.
Not-for-profit FSS enjoys a unique public/private partnership with Fayette County government. Through this agreement we provide a variety of
supportive services such as Meals On Wheels, Transportation, In-home
Personal Care/ Homemaker Services, Care Management, Information Assistance, and more. We could not do that without our government partners;
however, we believe it is our responsibility to complement the public support to ensure we can continue serving Fayette’s seniors for generations
to come. Therefore, we feel it’s important to note that less than half of our
revenue comes from sources other than federal, state, and local governments.
Fayette Senior Services is recognized as a model of sustainability and
social entrepreneurship among peer organizations and nongovernment
funders. Although we are proud of this recognition, we could not do all
that we do without the support from charitable donors, Center members,
volunteers, grantees, and the community that so generously supports our
fundraising efforts.
The aging transition can be paved with a broad spectrum of challenges.
However, it can also prove to be rich with opportunities. The key to “aging well” is knowledge. When it comes to addressing those unique needs,
Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center is the one-stop shop for
empowering older adults to live well and age well.
Our Life Enrichment Center in Fayetteville is uniquely different from traditional senior centers. Our beautiful facility is a vibrant place where adults
age 50+ come to socialize with friends, enjoy a great meal in our Ultimate
café, re-energize their bodies, exercise their minds, and lift their spirits.
To make sure our programs and activities are within easy reach to more
seniors, we are proud to have established a community partnership with
the city of Peachtree City. We now offer many new programs and activities
in Peachtree City at the Gathering Place (next to “The Fred” Amphitheater)
and at our newest facility, McIntosh Place. We’re adding new classes and
activities each month during our expansion to PTC, so stay tuned for more!

When You Need a Little Help From Some Friends...
We offer supportive services that make a meaningful
difference in the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of older adults by preserving their independence, improving their quality of life, and connecting
them to the community.
Meals On Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a needs-based program for
homebound, or semi-homebound, seniors who are
unable to provide themselves with regular nutritious
meals due to physical or financial challenges. The
service also connects homebound seniors to the community through daily social contact, which also helps
to ensure their well-being.
Ani-Meals
To many homebound seniors, having a pet is a
source of companionship and comfort. The AniMeals™ program is designed to give our Meals On
Wheels clients a little help with the cost of pet food to
make sure that maintaining that important bond isn’t
an added burden.
STAR Program
(Seniors Together After Retirement)
Our STAR program (Seniors Together After Retirement) offers individuals 60 and older an opportunity to
come together for socialization, recreational activities,
health and wellness classes, and a nutritious meal
in our Ultimate Cafe. Transportation to and from the
Center may also be available to eligible participants.
Transportation
For older adults who no longer drive, getting to essential medical appointments, to the pharmacy, to
church, or to the grocery store can be a challenge,
putting their health and well-being at risk. We provide
safe and affordable door-to-door transportation options. Wheelchair assistance available.
Information & Assistance
Our certified Information & Assistance Specialists
are the gateway to connecting older adults with the
right community resources or providing information to
address their specific needs.
In-Home Personal Care/Homemaker Services
This service enables older adults to remain living
independently by providing compassionate care from
trained personnel who perform simple homemaker
and/or personal care tasks, such as light housekeeping or assistance with bathing. Delivered with the
utmost personal respect and dignity, our services can
also bring much needed respite to caregivers.
Care Management
Our professional staff of social workers helps older
adults make informed decisions to enhance independent living and quality of life. Our Care Managers offer
consultations, assessments, and follow-up to assist
individuals and families in planning and care. We also
provide invaluable support to caregivers.
Adult Day Care
We contract with a trusted and licensed local provider of adult daycare services that offers a caring
environment focused on the individual’s physical and
emotional well-being, as well as social and recreational activities. Transportation is available.
Medical Equipment Lending
We lend gently-used medical equipment to individuals, families, and caregivers. Equipment is loaned on
a first-come first served basis.
Home Repair Services
Our Tool Team helps older adults who are either
physically and/or financially unable to perform minor,
routine home maintenance tasks and repairs. The
Tool Team also specializes in disability additions,
such as grab bars.
Eligibility requirements apply for some programs. Some services may be provided free of charge (tax deductible donations welcome) or based on a sliding scale of income. Contact us at 770-461-0813 for more information.

Meet Peachtree City instructor Geri Daily.

left the fairgrounds. The Kiwanis members needed to
notify her but finding where she lived proved quite a
challenge. By the time they found the farm it was well
into the night hours. “Picture if you will, four young
Kiwanis guys standing on our front porch, knocking
on the door asking to speak to me,” said Geri. “I was
already in bed. I thought my father was going to shoot
them and ask questions later.”
After graduating from Interstate Business
College, Geri worked at a school supply store as secretary to the boss. At eighteen she met Garry at the
roller rink and a year and a half later she married him.
Garry served in the Army as an Army Medic during the
day and a trumpet player in the Army band at night.
The band would float down the Danube and play for
all the dignitaries.
Born on her parent’s farm in Trail County,
North Dakota, Geri Dailey was a true “Daddy’s Girl.”
Her love of the outdoors and her ‘Tomboy’ ways made
her an asset to farm life and since the age of twelve,
Geri helped with many farm chores. She attended
school in Caledonia, North Dakota with her two brothers and sister.
Life on the farm wasn’t all work. Geri’s childhood was one great adventure after another. Lots of
fun things to do if you let your imagine run wild. Geri
and her brothers would hop on the horses and ride
bareback to play with the neighbor kids. “It never
failed,” said Geri. “I always ended up with the horse
that was blind, which made the ride very interesting
indeed.”
Geri worked as a waitress at Powers Hotel in
Fargo, North Dakota (45 miles from home) to help pay
for college. During the local fair, Geri and a friend decided to each buy a ticket at the Kiwanis booth to win
a brand new Buick. Geri won the car but had already
After the Army, Garry became an Optician and

Geri’s worn many hats. She worked for 6 years as a
legal secretary at a law firm. She also belonged to the
local Soroptimist, an international volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls,
in local communities and throughout the world.
In 2009, Garry’s health began to deteriorate
and they made the move to Peachtree City to be near
their daughter. She serves as a volunteer at Clothes
Less Traveled. She also volunteers leading the Morning Stretch at FSS class when needed.
Geri will be the first to tell you the importance
of daily exercise. In February of 2013, the day before she had open heart surgery, she led the Morning
Stretch class at the Gathering Place and returned
about four weeks later, ready to exercise. We were
all amazed at her quick recovery, but then again, Geri
Dailey is an amazing woman.

Barbara Jacobson (named after Barbara
Stanwyck, her mother’s favorite actress), was born
on Thanksgiving Day in in Brooklyn, New York. “My
mother never let me forget that she was cooking
turkey in the oven and BINGO … her other turkey
in the oven was ready to be born!”
She spent a lot of time at Whitey’s, the
pub where her father worked. “My father was a
bartender and loved to stand me on the bar where
I entertained the customers singing “Amapola” at
the top of my lungs. I couldn’t have been more than
five years old.”
At ten years old, Aunt Marie (her mother’s
friend, no real relation) decided to read Barbara’s
tea leaves. She predicted Barbara would move
very soon and someone would shake her finger
in her face. Barbara thought it was all in fun, but
not long after the prediction came true. When the
depression hit, her family sold their brownstone for
$6,000 and moved across the street. The landlord
was an elderly lady who didn’t like Barbara and her
friends. When they became rowdy one evening the
old lady shook her finger in Barbara’s face. Her
reading had come true.
Barbara’s first real adventure into New York
City (at the age of sixteen) was a trip with her first
boyfriend, to see the movie The Bible. She was
listed in the high school yearbook as The Real Slick
Chick. During Senior Prom, she and several friends
ended up at the fancy Copacabana having the time
of their lives. Barbara could not get enough of the
city life. She loved taking the subway into Manhattan, seeing shows on Broadway, touring the fasci770-461-0813 | FAYSS.ORG
She took clown lessons and performed as
“Rosebud” years later at her grandson, Chase’s
birthday party. Barbara loves dancing of all types.
“I won three awards in ballroom dancing and even
considered performing on cruise ships for a living.”
But instead of taking to the seas, Barbara worked
for twenty years at the Boca Raton Community
Hospital as an assistant to the CEO.
After retiring she moved to Georgia in 2005
(just five minutes from her daughter, and sonin-law, Scott) to be closer to her grandchildren;
Jake, Chase, and Addison. She worked part time
for Home Instead Senior Care for four years as
a caregiver where she learned of Fayette Senior
Services. Her love of caregiving continues as she
helps out those in need. Barbara attends First Baptist Church of Peachtree City and sings in the choir.

“From my heart to yours...”
I’d like to take this month to share tips on preventing heart
disease, the #1 leading cause of death. Though we lack the
power to change some risk factors-such as family history and
age-there are a few key prevention steps we all can take.
1. Do NOT smoke or use tobacco
2. Include at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day
3. Eat a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat
proteins. Stay away from deep fried fast foods
4. Maintain a healthy weight
5. Get enough quality sleep
6. And stay on top of regular health screenings and wellness
visits

Geriatrician Jaza Marina, M.D. cares
for Kaiser Permanente’s senior members
Medicine or teaching — those were the two career paths Kaiser Permanente’s
Jaza Marina, M.D. considered pursuing as a college student. But she realized
that as a doctor she could fulfill her passion for helping others and teach
people how to live healthier lives.
Dr. Marina is now a board-certified geriatrician with more than a decade
of experience, and she is an integral part of Kaiser Permanente’s Geriatric
Assessment Clinic. “I love practicing geriatric medicine at Kaiser Permanente
because we are able to spend a lot of time getting to know our patients
and identifying their medical needs,” said Dr. Marina. “On the very first visit,
patients have an opportunity to meet with their doctor, a clinical pharmacist and a social worker.
We want to know about their physical health, the medications they are taking and the challenges
they may be experiencing in their personal lives that could impact their overall health.”
Dr. Marina recommends anyone over the age of 65 to consider seeing a geriatrician, especially
if they are experiencing health problems such memory loss or limited mobility. She sees patients
at Kaiser Permanente medical offices across metro Atlanta, including the new Southwood
Comprehensive Medical Center in Jonesboro.

AtWaits Hearing Aid Center our patients
are not treated like customers…they’re treated like people.
Your hearing is precious, so you shouldn’t trust it to just any hearing health care provider.
Waits Hearing Aid Center is an independently owned practice, which means we are
able carry a wide variety of brands to suit the needs of each patient. We stand behind our
products, and we guarantee that we will work with you after your initial fitting until your
hearing is at its optimal level FREE OF CHARGE. It’s all part of our
Risk Free Trial — wear them at home or at work for two weeks.
