THE FIRST MARTYR
Acts Chapter 6 introduces us to one of the Lord’s choice disciples, Stephen.
He was an active worker in the early church at Jerusalem. We should notice
that when the Lord calls His disciples for a special task, He always calls those
who are busy in His work. Stephen was one of seven men chosen to distribute food to the church of Jerusalem. The Lord also called him to distribute
spiritual food (God’s Word). He was a profound teacher but the Jews didn’t
like his message. In Chapter 8, we read his wonderful summary of the history
of the Jewish nation. Notice that Stephen did not suffer alone. In Acts 7:5456, he was given a glimpse of Heaven, “When they heard these things, they
were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. But he, being
full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of
God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, And said, Behold, I see
the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.”
Stephen was then taken out of the city and stoned to death because of his
witness for the Lord. He became the Àrst recorded martyr of the New Testament church. His life demonstrates the fact that those who serve the Lord
will suffer persecution. We should ask this question of ourselves, “If I was arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict me?”
