To All Our Friends and Members,
The Art School at Old Church
is a meeting place for learning and exchanging
artistic ideas. Our goal is to provide an environment
conducive to the creative process. We believe that art
is an important expression of the human spirit, that
creativity is an innate function, and that in a supportive
and inspiring atmosphere it is bound to flourish.
Established in 1974 as a nonprofit, nonsectarian
community educational facility, our mission is to
enrich the quality of life in the community through
visual arts education and cultural events. Our
This edition of the Art School at Old Church’s catalog is dedicated to
our fabulous volunteers! Our volunteers are comprised of individuals
of all ages and backgrounds – the common thread is an interest in
the visual arts.
Most of our volunteers are students; many are faculty, Board
members and staff. All participate in the overall success of the
school. Our volunteers assist with the Annual Pottery Show and
Sale, children’s art classes and Our Thrift Shop – a retail enterprise
in Westwood, NJ that supports the Art School.
As you browse through the catalog, you will see images that illustrate
the spirit of our organization. Photos of faculty and students show
artists at work exploring new possibilities in the studios.

for a class or workshop this coming semester.

OUR HISTORY
The Art School at Old Church is a nonprofit, nonsectarian educational facility established in 1974. A group of artists saw promise
in a nineteenth-century church building, and with little more than
their passion and a will to succeed, worked to establish the Art
School. Forty years later, the Art School continues to provide
educational and cultural offerings that enrich the quality of life
in the local community and beyond.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Our Young Artists Program serves students age 4 to 15. All the
classes are designed to encourage the discovery of creativity, with
emphasis on process rather than product. The program offers
opportunities for children to explore a variety of art forms in a fun,
creative and exciting environment. We also offer our Special Needs Art
Experience throughout most of the year, tailored to children with
physical and developmental challenges.
ABOUT OUR CLASSES AND REGISTRATION
Experienced, professional artists teach all of our classes. The faculty
has a common goal in teaching their craft: to teach the breadth of
possibilities within their field. All classes encourage each student to
find his/her own creative voice in a supportive environment.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CLASSES FOR TEACHERS
We are approved by the NJ Department of Education as a Professional
Development Provider. All classes may be taken for PDP credits.
Our well-equipped studios are bright and spacious. We offer over 90
classes and workshops each semester for children and adults of all
abilities and ages.
Registration: We accept registration by mail, fax or hand delivery and
also by phone two weeks after registration begins. Adult classes are
open to students at least 15 years old.
Late registration fee: All students are highly encouraged to register
as early as possible to ensure a spot in the class(es) of their choice at
the lowest cost. PLEASE NOTE: All registrations processed within 10
days of the semester start date, or after the semester begins, will be
assessed a $5 late registration fee (per course). The late registration
fee does not apply to workshops.
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT CLASS?
To assist you in your selection, symbols for the various levels are available by each course description in the catalog.
Beginner – Basic skill level with limited or no experience. Classes
introduce and develop new skills and techniques.
Intermediate – Student has enough knowledge of medium, technique and processes to begin developing a personal voice or vision.
Supportive guidance encourages continued growth.
Advanced – Student has demonstrated a level of mastery that
allows for independence and a personal vision for their art. He/she is
seeking an environment with other artists that further defines and
supports the direction of their work.
MEMBERSHIP
The non-refundable membership is due each calendar year
and is valid through December 31. This annual fee, which helps
sustain the school, is required to participate in our regular semester
courses but is not required for workshops or cultural arts classes.
The membership fee is not prorated. Membership fees are:
Family - $50
Adult - $40 (includes teens enrolled in adult classes)
Young artist (up to 14) - $20
Teen (enrolled in teen classes only) - $20

SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are available for individuals who are in need of financial
assistance. Applications must be received at least 10 days before the
start of the semester to be considered. Please ask at the front desk for
more information.
VOLUNTEER & WORK EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIES
We need YOU! Volunteers are an integral part of the community at
the Art School at Old Church, and we are always seeking additional
help. No art experience is necessary, so please consider donating some
of your time and energy.
Work exchange opportunities are also available. Please call the Art

ABOUT THE GALLERIES
The Mikhail Zakin Gallery exhibits over 300 artists annually,
displaying over 500 works of art. Exhibitions include both
traditional and contemporary work from established and emerging
artists. The Café Gallery exhibits student work from our fine art and craft
classes. The galleries are free and open to the public during school
hours. Information on exhibiting is available online at tasoc.org. Click
on ”Opportunities” for information on how to apply for a show.
GIFT GIVING OPPORTUNITIES
Tuition and membership alone do not cover all of our operating
expenses. We need your financial support to maintain the quality
of our classes and programming. Tax-deductible donations, gifts,
and employer matching programs are always welcome and can be
included with your registration.

From the beginning of recorded time, humans have
worked with clay to solve life’s problems – for shelter,
for cooking, for storage, for record keeping, and for the
pursuit of beauty. In our highly technological age, clay
also serves as a medium of expression. Our ceramic
program affords our students growth and development of
personal aesthetics as well as mastery of technical skills.
We recommend that beginning students start their ceramic
journey in handbuilding, which provides a basic grounding
for further exploration on the wheel.

available in the studio to help us make things. But all too often and all
too quickly, we tend to gravitate towards one method and forget about

This course in handbuilding and wheel-throwing uses mid-range
cone six glazes, engobes and underglazes. Electric firing, the most
accessible to urban potters, allows a wide range of surface finishes
and color. Instruction will be given in making and applying glazes
and slips, as well as using and firing the electric kiln. Experimentation
is encouraged; a notebook is necessary. Lessons and demonstrations
are directed towards individual needs and development.

COMPREHENSIVE CLAY

Join us to make beautiful pots designed to hold, serve, and prepare
your food. We will start with drinking vessels and move on to pitchers
and teapots, then create serving bowls, platters and baking casseroles.
Wheel-throwing and altering are the primary methods explored;
emphasis will be on glazing and decorating as well. Our goal will be a
potluck meal at the end of the semester to try out our great new pots.

What’s the most exciting and fulfilling way we can work with clay? In
this class we’ll look for inspiration in the ceramics of other cultures and

We use the potter’s wheel to make nice, round, even pots, right?
So that’s where we will start, but then we will push, paddle, cut,
stretch and coax the clay into new forms. Flattened, oval, bulbous,
fluted and lobed pots will emerge. What fun - and still functional and
beautiful! We’ll also spend time discussing and experimenting with
different methods of decorating and glazing our finished pots.

In this class we will focus on handbuilding and wheel-throwing to
make animals or human figures. Historical references will be used to
help guide us. Bring some drawings or photographs of figures you’re
interested in to class; we’ll use them as the starting point and see what
we come up with.
Imagine your summer garden with a new
addition this year - a beautiful, handmade
garden stool or bird bath. At 18” tall these
will be among the largest pieces you will
ever create in clay. Handbuilding with
stacked sections will give you the basic
form which can be further enhanced with
sprigging, carving and texture. We’ll be
using templates and molds that can be
combined in various ways for a custom
vessel and we’ll be working with stoneware clay. Appropriate for the
intermediate and advanced student.

Beginner
Learn the fundamentals of clay techniques in both handbuilding
and wheel-throwing. The first half of the semester will introduce

be discussed. Class work will evolve based on each student’s goals

The human figure presents infinite personal interpretations. In this
class, students are encouraged to begin work in a variety of mediums
such as plaster, found objects or Styrofoam, and to complete their work
at home, allowing total freedom for changes and exploration of ideas.
This creates an opportunity to work on several pieces simultaneously
while promoting creative energy and momentum. Work can be
brought back to class for critiques or further interpretation.
A study of contemporary sculpture is a large part of our
journey towards abstraction.

The Art School is committed to thorough exploration and
involvement in the traditional skills of fine arts. We believe
drawing to be essential as a support for the disciplines
of painting, sculpture, ceramics, and much more. It is a
foundation on which art is built, allowing the artist to give
voice and skills to visual ideas and imagination. The history
and tradition of painting and sculpture – from cave art
to the renaissance of this day – starts with drawing as its

are encouraged to explore interpretive drawing and abstraction, extending into color and collage.

of - whether it’s illustrating your favorite classic, a graphic novel or children’s book. Ignite
your imagination and discover your personal
style as you work on concepts and execution.
This class explores the fascinating relationship
between image and text. It will teach you how to translate words into
pictures. Students will investigate color and composition, producing illustrations based on manuscripts and real assignments. You may also develop a story and illustrate it using techniques that interest you, whether
drawing, painting, collage or photography. After making thumbnail
sketches in pencil, you can work in the medium of your choice. Supplies
will depend on the media chosen. Please bring in samples of your work
or a project you’re working on to the first class, along with a pencil and
a small pad of tracing paper.
Join us as we explore the challenge of the blank canvas. We will paint
from personal memories, still lifes and landscapes as we review basics of
painting such as composition, drawing, color mixing, light and shade.
Also covered: historic and contemporary artworks, artist journals, and
topics such as artist’s block. Still life setups and landscape photo references are provided; demos and one-on-one instruction help you develop

Revisit what you’re doing with color. Every painter
uses particular color combinations that are familiar
to them. Discover how to integrate color in a
more complex way. Using the medium of your
choice, you will learn how to mix colors and apply color principles to
create value and saturation contrasts. Students will create a palette of
colors and learn how to evaluate their color choices in each painting.
The final project will be the student’s own choice. There will be visual

Join the community of online artists who create art often to post and
sell online. In each class we will focus on being organized and getting
down to work, producing and writing about a small artwork. Still life
setups, demos and one-on-one guidance will be provided. Throughout
the course we will photograph our art and post it online using equipment we have on hand, such as a smartphone, iPad, or digital camera
and home computer. We will discuss how to use social media (Facebook,
Blogger, Twitter) for marketing and creating an online community. All
students will set up a blog the first week of class. There will be handouts
with internet resources and copyright information. Students will gain
experience writing and commenting positively on each other’s art and
blogs in class. This class is open to those working in acrylic, collage,
drawing, oil and watercolor in small format (5 x 7 to 8 x 10). Although
beginners are welcome, some art experience is recommended. You will

Explore the variety of ways you can create a plate for the purpose of
making a print. Take traditional methods of printmaking to yet another
level by introducing unorthodox ways of creating a high and low surface
for receiving the ink. Explore the use of hot wax directly on paper or on
Plexiglas to create translucent monotypes or textural encaustic collagraphs. Combine solarplate etching plates in your layered print to
achieve depth and sophisticated photo imagery.

will simply use a Plexiglas plate, waterbased ink or
watercolor, and brushes and textural materials to create and transfer a one-of-a-kind image onto paper.
This is a terrific way to explore the offset image and
create a series that amplifies the themes in your painting, sculpture or mixed media work. Additive and subtractive paint and ink applications, rag papers, and
press and hand printing will be part of our explorations and discussions.
Students in the morning class are welcome to continue with this class in
the afternoon for an all-day print experience.

Intermediate and advanced
This course will explore the control of lighting for mood, beauty, and
conceptual design of your subject. Learn lighting strategies and exposure
variables that can enhance the conceptual goals of your image. Light
controls for portraiture and still life subjects will give participants added
tools for self expression. Using light sources that include hot lights, flash
units, daylight and available indoor lighting, students will examine and
practice lighting skills in studio, on location, and at home. These techniques can be duplicated at home with minimal equipment and effort.
Participants should have a basic knowledge of their digital cameras in
auto and manual modes and have access to image-editing software to
refine final versions of their lighting projects.

Intermediate and advanced
Learn how to effectively create photographs using your camera,
computer and inkjet printer. Discover the technical and esthetic aspects
of taking digital photos, as well as the steps needed to realize and print
the finished images using Photoshop Elements and other inexpensive
photo-editing software. You will need a digital SLR camera capable of
taking RAW format pictures and a Mac or PC computer. A handheld
flash, tripod, remote shutter release, circular polarizing filter and inexpensive six-color inkjet printer are recommended. Homework assignments are reviewed in class; guidance is also given on two field trips.
We go beyond the basics to explore more advanced techniques such
as high dynamic range and black and white photography. Students will
also learn how to maintain and calibrate their equipment.

Precious metal clay (PMC) is a clay made up of pure silver particles, a nontoxic organic binder and water. It can be worked with your fingers or with
simple tools. In this class you will learn how to form PMC into items that
fire in a kiln for thirty minutes and emerge as wearable jewelry objects.
Instruction will include how to texture, form and finish your pieces.
Make unique art jewelry using a variety of materials. Copper, brass and
silver can be used alone or combined with found objects, photos, enamel, resin, Plexiglas and other nontraditional materials. Use jewelry-making
techniques such as sawing, drilling, filing, texturing, soldering and cold
connecting. Students at all skill levels are encouraged to develop their
own designs with instructor guidance.

Explore the art of creating handmade metal jewelry and small objects.
You will learn to cut, form, connect and embellish metal using a wide
range of metalworking tools and techniques. This class covers soldering,
sawing, filing, riveting, polishing, bezel setting, roller printing and much
more. Learn the basics or add to your skills and develop your own
designs. Everyone can expand their creative horizons!
Make a beautiful pair of earrings using the ancient classical jewelry arts
of enameling, granulation and chainmaking. First you will create your
own cabochon gemstones by enameling - fusing glass to metal in a kiln.
Next you’ll create a bezel setting for your gemstones using granulation fusing tiny spheres of metal onto a backsheet in interesting patterns.
The final step will be embellishing your settings with chain made with
the loop-in-loop method.

the Art School at Old Church
policies & membership information
POLICIES:
Registration: We accept registration by mail, fax or hand
delivery and also by phone two weeks later. Adult classes are
open to students at least 15 years old.
Late registration fee: All students are highly encouraged
to register as early as possible to ensure a spot in the
class(es) of their choice at the lowest cost. PLEASE NOTE: All
registrations processed within 10 days of the semester start
date, or after the semester begins, will be assessed a $5 late
registration fee (per course). The late registration fee does
not apply to workshops.
Membership fee: The non-refundable membership is due
each year and is valid through December 31. This annual fee,
which helps sustain the school, is required to participate in
regular semester courses, but is not required for workshops
or cultural arts classes. The membership fee is not prorated.
Membership fees are:
Family - $50
Adult - $40 (includes teens enrolled in adult classes)
Young artist (up to 14) - $20
Teen (enrolled in teen classes only) - $20
Clay information and firing charges: Clay and clay tools, as
well as sculpture boards and tools, are available for purchase at
the desk. Only Art School clay will be fired. For ceramics classes,
firing charges are $3.50/lb for studio clay and $3.00/lb for prepurchased clay. For sculpture classes, firing is $1.25/lb (red clay;
bisque only). Discounted bulk firing charge cards are available at
the front desk.
Returned check fee: A $15 fee is charged for all returned
checks.
Transfer fee: There is a $10 fee for transfer between classes.
Refunds and credits: Full tuition and material fee charges
are refunded or credited less a $10 processing fee per
course if the student cancels in writing at least one week
prior to the start of the class. Later written cancellations
are accepted and monies refunded or credited minus a
$25 fee per course provided we can fill the slot. When the
school cancels a course, all monies are refunded or credited
if the course cannot be rescheduled. No refunds for
classes in the event of teacher substitution. No refunds
for membership.
Payment of fees: Fees are paid in full at the time of registration. Fees are not prorated. Payment scheduling is available;
call for information. Please consider helping us keep costs
down by paying with a personal check, made payable to The Art
School at Old Church.
Parking: Parking is available in our lot and on Orchard St.
during the day and evening. At night, you can park in St.
Joseph’s lot next door or the Demarest Middle School lot across
Piermont Road. If parking offsite, feel free to drop off your art
materials at the back gate first. No Sunday parking in our lot.
Material lists and fees: Material lists are available online
at tasoc.org with the course descriptions. Material fees for
classes are indicated online and in the catalog above the
course descriptions. For some classes no monetary amount is
indicated, as materials can be purchased during class.
Senior citizen discount: A 10% tuition discount is offered
upon registration to all students at least 65 years old.
Conduct: The Art School reserves the right to refuse admission
or to expel any disruptive student. Cell phone usage is not
permitted in studios. Cell phones should be set on silent or
vibrate in the studios. Children may not accompany adults to
classes or studio time.
Absences: Student absences are non-refundable. The school is
not responsible for make-up classes, although we will provide
assistance when possible. Make-up classes occur only during
the same semester with the same instructor.
