Grief Support Series
Thursday, Feb. 12 until Mar. 5, 6-8 p.m.
Nelson & District Hospice Society
is offering a free Grief Support Series
for anyone grieving the loss of someone through death. The group will
run for four weeks. Pre-registration is
required but attendance is free.
For those who have lost someone through death, the cycle of loss
through detachment, despair and
anger to recovery can be a lonely,
frightening and overwhelming experience, even when family and friends
are trying to support us. A grief support group provides a safe, supportive
environment where the bereaved can
learn that the way they are experiencing their grief is normal and very
individual. Grief is a healthy response
to loss that needs to be acknowledged
and expressed before we can move on.
Working through feelings about losses
and sharing them with others who are
also grieving decreases our isolation
and loneliness while helping us learn
how to experience and work through
our pain.

The Nelson Rotary Club is looking for applicants to the Adventure in
Citizenship Program in the National
Capital Region.
From May 3 to May 6, 2015, program participants will join other young
Canadians in discussing and debating
the issues impacting Canada today. The
diversity of Canada and the privileges
and responsibilities of citizenship will be
a key focus of the program. Participants
will be billeted with host families and
provided with bed and breakfast and
transportation to and from the program.
The selected student must be a
Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
between the ages of 16 and 18 by May
1, 2015, enrolled in and attending
school (grade 11 or 12), and maintaining acceptable grade standards.
Travel arrangements and expenses
are provided by the Nelson Rotary

Knowing Your Limits
When it came
to declining
extra opportunities saying no was next
to impossible. However
now I find it much easier
due to time constraints and
lack of energy. Feeling
obligated to take advantage
of everything that comes
your way is normal but to
me it’s unnecessary.
A good example of this
would be extra work,
many of us feel the need
to put in 40+ hours a week
as it’s considered the norm
but if you only need 30+
and if you feel that the
former is too much by all
means feel free to work
less. It may not be possible
to do so due to your present circumstances but we
shouldn’t feel the need to
work as much as humanly
possible. Work within your
limits and only push yourself if you feel like, pacing
is key.
I’m not saying to not push
yourself. Sometimes even
exceeding our limits is a
good thing as it shows the
potential for accomplishment as well as giving us
the opportunity to test our
own personal boundaries.
Find a rhythm that works
for you and go for it.

Stop!! - A message to Nelson City Council: function before beauty

project to upgrade infrastructure to
water and electricity and sewer on
Hall Street.
Because they’re ripping up the
street, they thought that this would be
an ideal time to beautify Hall Street and
make it an easy thoroughfare between
Baker Street and the lakeside.
Last Monday, Januray 26, the City
set up an information session at the
Adventure Hotel in order to give the
community a chance to see what the
proposed project looks like, as well as to
solicit comments. The announcement of
the January 26 public meeting was made
Jan. 22, giving just four days notice.
The request for comments during
the meeting at the hotel was a farce in
that there is no way that the solicited
comments and ideas can be properly
examined just three weeks before
they are planning to make a final
decision. It is also clear that there
is much resistance to the proposed
“beautification” changes.
I ask council and the Mayor to put
the brakes on the beautification aspect
of their plan and go ahead with the
infrastructure renos.
Council must not approve this
project in total, but must separate
the infrastructure renovations from
everything else. They should approve
the infrastructure and pause the rest of
the development auntil there is general
acceptance of the direction that we
would like this community to go in.
When I asked how much the
project would cost, I was told around
four million dollars, but I was assured
that it was not coming out of new taxes,
but rather another fund. If we have
money to spend on “beautification
of Hall Street”, might that money be
spent on higher priorities, upgradin
Baker Street, for example?
The drawings supplied, give the
impression that we live in a flat town
and do not realistically give you a
sense of traffic flows and pedestrian
flows on our hilly Hall Street. If
the City really wants to convince us
that this is truly of benefit for our
community, why not create either a
3-D Model, or at least a virtual 3-D
model to prove their point. As it is, it
would be a mistake to move ahead on
the whole project.

Nelson Police: Arson arrest made in October 2014 fire
On October 4 2014, the Nelson
Police Department and the Nelson Fire
Department attended a suspicious fire
in the lower level of a Nelson Heritage
Building located at 303 Vernon Street,
Nelson.
The fire had started in the basement
and storage area below the Academy
of Classical Oriental Sciences which
occupies the upper floor of the building. There are also two private residences above where the fire was started. All occupants were able to safely
exit their residences and the fire was
extinguished in time to save the building. Total damage was estimated to be
at $25 000 dollars.
After a lengthy investigation, the
Nelson Police Department arrested and
formally charged a 19 year- old Creston
resident on Thursday, Jan. 22 for Arson.
He was released on a Recognizance of
Bail with strict conditions and is scheduled to appear in Nelson Provincial
Court on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015.

Trail RCMP: vehicle thief and break and enter suspect in custody
In the early morning hours of
Friday Jan. 23, the Trail RCMP were
called to two commercial B&E’s in
the city within an hour of each other.
Ackland Grainger and Gerick’s Cycle
both had their front doors smashed
and cash and property stolen. Video
surveillance captured images of the
male suspect and a vehicle.
On January 24th the stolen Ford
F350 used by the suspect was located
in West Trail. Investigation soon lead
police to a residence on Wilmes Lane
where a 37 year old female was taken
into custody. A search warrant was
executed at the residence and evidence from both of the break and
enters was seized along with items
stolen from a break in at Sound West
in December 2014. Items recovered
from the stolen truck also linked the
suspect to a theft of tools from a City
of Trail work truck. It is believed the
couple recently relocated to Trail from
the lower mainland. The female was
released with a pending court date of
April 2nd in Rossland.
In the early morning hours of
January 27th, Kamloops RCMP
arrested the male sought in the local
reak and enters after he stole a ‘bait’
vehicle in Kamloops. Kamloops
Detachment is investigating a rash
of crimes committed overnight. The
male will be held in custody and will
be facing numerous charges related to
his crime spree in Trail.

Castlegar RCMP: three men caught with stolen property and drugs
On Thursday, Jan. 22, Castlegar
RCMP arrested three suspects alleged
to have committed multiple offences in the Castlegar area. In total,
the three adult males are facing a
total of 16 charges including theft
under $5,000, possession of property
obtained by crime under $5,000, fraud
under $5,000 and possession of drugs.
Two of the men are from the Grande
Prairie area and one had been living
in Castlegar.
The incidents are all believed
to have been committed within 15
hours of the three males coming to
the Castlegar area. At 10:30 a.m.
on January 22, Castlegar RCMP
Detachment members received a
report of a theft from a vehicle which
had occurred overnight. At 11:30 a.m.
a report was received of a suspicious
male attempting to use a credit card at
a business. The employee noted the
credit card had a flag on it from the
issuer and went to speak to the male,
who departed with the credit card. At
1:49 p.m. another victim reported a
theft from a vehicle. Items taken from
the vehicle included the credit card
used at the previous business.
Based on the record of the transactions on the stolen credit card and
information provided to police by
local businesses, the suspects were
found to be associated to a hotel room
in Castlegar. When the one of the
suspects returned to the hotel room
at 3:27 p.m., he was taken into custody by police and also found to be in
possession of methamphetamine. At
4:50 p.m., the other two suspects were
arrested at the hotel room. Numerous
stolen items and items purchased with
the stolen card were recovered from
the hotel room and from the suspects. Investigation also showed the
suspects travelled from Alberta in a
truck reported stolen from Grande
Prairie. The stolen vehicle was also
recovered.
On Tuesday, Jan. 27, the three
men entered guilty pleas on a number of the charges. As a result, two
of the men received sentences of 50
days in custody and a $100.00 Victim
Surcharge each. The third received a
sentence of 80 days in custody and a
$100.00 Victim Surcharge.
