Berry steered his mount along the inside rail to challenge the
leader Driefontein (Fastnet Rock) and ultimately prevail by a short
head, with Territory (Lonhro) a further length away in third, narrowly
ahead of the $4.40 favourite, Panzer Division (Redoute’s Choice).
“He is a horse who has given me a few headaches,” Waller said.
“After the spring we brought in a pony as a companion for him.
“Sometimes he just wouldn’t gallop but he has settled down now
with the pony and works properly. I’ve never had a horse like him. He
is one in a thousand.
“I think it’s likely (all five runner) will run next in the Apollo Stakes,”
Waller continued. “I’ll weigh them all up.”
Blake Shinn, who rode Driefontein, said he thought the Gai
Waterhouse-trained mare had the race in her keeping.
“She got softened up in the middle stages which told in the last
50 metres,” he said.
Bred in Europe by S F Bloodstock, Weary (5 g Astronomer Royal
- America Nova by Verglas) has now won four of his 17 career starts
and two of nine since switching to Australia with Waller, for a total of
$721,983 in prize money.
Out of the juvenile Listed-winning mare America Nova (Verglas),
Weary (formerly Sir Patrick Moore) is a brother to the Group Three
winner Stellar Path (Astronomer Royal). Weary was stakes placed
on two occasions in Europe including a second to Olympic Glory
(Choisir) in the 2013 Greenham Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) when trained by
Harry Dunlop.
Weary, who raced in Europe as Sir Patrick Moore, has been
through the sales ring twice. He sold for €16,000 to SackvilleDonald
at the 2011 Arqana October Yearling Sale before he was purchased
two years later by Mick Flanagan at the Arqana Arc Sale for €145,000.
