“Farce of Nature”
Hammond Community

presents,

Conkey: Jones, Hope and
Wooten’s “Farce Of Nature,”
Directed by Don Taylor.
The non-stop hilarity
of this Southern-fried farce
highlights one day in the
life of the Wilburn family of
Mayhew, Arkansas. Meet D.
Gene Wilburn, the owner and
proprietor of The Reel ‘Em
Inn, the finest little fishing

used to be, but lately business
is down, tourists are few,
and the lone guest who’s just
checked in - an extremely
jittery Carmine DeLuca from

a location shift in the Witness

anybody just want to fish
anymore?

Just a few days ago
Minisha Parnell, was the
lucky winner of the “she
needs help” contest. This
contest was created for
deserving single mothers.
The rules were very simple 1.
You had to be a single mom
2. A resident of NW Indiana.
Contestants were asked to
post a video on FaceBook Or
Instagram explaining their
most difficult experience
being a single mother. The
winner would receive $600
in prizes. Prizes included 1.
A full body massage by Stacy
Williams 2. Professional make
up by Daniele Carter 3 photo
shoot by DANNY BLAK 4.
A Hair Style by David Hall 5.
A Manicure and pedicure gift
card 6. $100 visa gift card.
I created this contest
because I wanted to show
that there are rappers who
care about their community.
I believe single mothers are
under appreciated in our
society. For one day I just
wanted to allow the winner to
feel stress free and pampered.
I also wanted to shed light on a
situation that affects so many
but is rarely talked about.
The video Minisha
submitted for the contest talked
about her personal difficulties
being a single mom. “Both
of my Children’s father were
killed. It is extremely difficult
explaining death to children.
It is even harder explaining
to them why other kids have
their father around but theirs
isn’t. Through all of it I just
do the best I can and keep my
faith strong.” Besides being
a single mother Minisha is a
full time worker and also a
college student. Her optimism
and perseverance can teach us
all a lesson.

Northtownship Seeks
Veteran for House
North
Township
Trustee Frank Mrvan is on the
hunt for the perfect veteran
candidate to work with Habitat
for Humanity of Northwest
Indiana to rehab a home
on Tennessee in Hessville
with the idea of owning it
and becoming part of the
neighborhood. Mrvan, who
has a passion for veterans,
has been an avid supporter of
the “Veteran’s Build” project
from its start.
12 Habitat for Humanity
and the Northwest Indiana
Veterans Action Council
partnered in January of
2014 to address the need for
housing in Lake County, Ind.
among low income veterans.
One house is currently being
constructed for a designated
family in Merrillville. The
Tennessee house has been
generously donated and will
be the second.
“This is a home that
definitely needs work, but
will become a great addition
to Hessville when it is
repaired,”Mrvan said.”Habitat
for Humanity has the best
thing going for people who
want to have that pride of
homeownership, but for
whatever reason, haven’t been
able to make it happen.”
Part of Habitat’s
requirement is that the
qualified homeowner put in
three hundred sweat equity
hours either through actual
work on the home or at
Habitat’s ReStore located in
Calumet Township. Friends
and family can help with
half of that requirement.
For those who are disabled,
6
accommodations will be
made. Other requirements
include that they must show a
need for adequate housing and
also have the ability to pay the
interest free mortgage.
North Township took
title to the home from the Lake
County Commissioner’s tax
sale with the idea of helping
a family find a home while
repairing a neglected home in
the community.
Dan Klein, executive
director of Habitat for
Humanity of Northwest
Indiana, said the agency will
be repairing the roof to keep it
watertight for the winter until
a suitable veteran candidate
is found. Both he and Mrvan
are urging the low-income
veteran population to apply.
Last year’s veteran candidate
didn’t think he qualified
and now he is on his way to
becoming a homeowner.
The “Veterans Build”
project is an ongoing
effort. With more generous
donations the Northwest
Indiana Veterans Action
Council and Habitat for
Humanity of Northwest
Indiana plan to build one
home a year designated for a
veteran. For a pre-application

NIPSCO Extends
Option to “Go Green”
Northern Indiana Public
Service Company (NIPSCO)
today announced that its Green
Power Rate pilot program, which
launched in May 2012, has been
approved by the Indiana Utility
Regulatory Commission as a
long term program.
The Green Power Rate
program allows residential,
commercial and industrial
electric customers to designate
25, 50 or 100 percent of their
monthly electric usage to be
attributed to renewable energy
sources. Commercial and
industrial participants also have
the flexibility to designate five
or ten percent of their monthly
usage.
Customers who enroll
in the Green Power Program
will pay a monthly premium in
addition to NIPSCO’s standard
electric rate—approximately $2
per month for the average home.
The added costs are passed
through directly to participating
customers with no mark up or
financial return for NIPSCO.
“We’re pleased to be able
to extend this program beyond its
original pilot for our customers,”
said Kathleen O’Leary NIPSCO
president. “It’s a great option
for those who want to ‘go green’
without the expense of installing
renewable technology on their
homes or businesses.”
To ensure the electricity
used can be attributed to
renewable energy, NIPSCO
purchases Renewable Energy
Certificates (RECs). RECs are
the environmental attributes that
are derived when electricity is
generated from renewable and/
or environmentally friendly
sources.
These RECs are certified
through Green-e Energy, a
recognized national organization
February 1, 2015
that ensures RECs are created
from the proper sources and are
properly claimed.
NIPSCO will target its
green power purchases through
this program to come from
Indiana and/or Midwestern
resources.
Currently there are about
940 homes and businesses
enrolled in NIPSCO’s Green
Power Program.
“It’s a great program,”
said Heather Pritchard, office
manager of Save the Dunes.
“Being a green organization, it’s
great to know that our energy is
coming from green sources. We
hope to bring more awareness
to the program, and have our
community members jump on
board as well. It feels good to

On December 30,
2014, American Savings, FSB
officially became American
Community Bank of Indiana.
In our community, we
have seen a large number of
bank mergers and acquisitions
in recent years. American
Community Bank wants to
make it clear that this is NOT
a merger, acquisition, or sale of
any kind. This name change is
an expression of the bank’s shift
to a full-service community
bank.
The bank’s President,
Michael Mellon, says “We are
excited to announce this news.
We feel that this new name
more accurately reflects who
and what we are.”
The bank was established
on March 29, 1910 in Hammond
as The First Polish Building
Loan & Savings Association.
The bank changed its name
to American Savings and
Loan Association in 1937 and
remained that way until 1987
when the bank converted to a
federally chartered institution
and became American Savings,
FSB.
The bank today has
converted to a state chartered
bank, becoming American
Community Bank. Says
Mellon, “It’s an important
change because it creates a new
identity that lets the community
know that we’ve expanded
and enhanced our banking
services, providing a complete
banking solution. However,
in many ways it’s not a big
change, because we are, and
will remain, a community bank
with the same ownership, the
same employees, and the same
community spirit.”
The bank is changing
February 1, 2015
its name as a reflection of its
changing identity – as not just
a community bank, but as a
full-service community bank
that offers all of the products
and services our community
needs. American Community
Bank offers a complete suite of
modern banking resources that
extends far beyond the limits of
the savings and loan accounts
that many still associate
with the bank’s history. At
American Community Bank,
customers can take advantage
of: mobile banking App;
complete commercial banking
and lending; mobile check
deposit; local decision-making;
feature-rich online banking;
business online banking; online
mortgage applications; remote
business check deposits;
investment services; payroll
processing solutions.
Mellon continues, “We
hope that people will embrace
the new bank name and logo.
We’ve tried topreserve ties
to our past by keeping the
‘American’ that’s been a part of
the bank name since 1937. The
‘Community Bank’ part of the
name just seemed logical and
felt right, as a clear link to what
we are – especially at a time
when it’s a lot more unique and
important than it used to be.”
American Community
Bank operates four full-service
offices in Munster, Hammond,
Dyer, and Schererville, Indiana.
Deposits are insured up to
applicable limits by the Federal
Deposit Insurance Corporation
(FDIC).
