Penitential Act
“Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our
sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the
sacred mysteries.”
(One of the following forms are used:)
I confess to almighty God and to you, my
brothers and sisters, that I have greatly
sinned, in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have
failed to do, (striking breast) through my
fault, through my fault, through my most
grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed
Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and
Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
“May God have mercy on us, forgive us our
sins and bring us to everlasting life.”
Amen.
“Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy.
“Christ, have mercy,” Christ, have mercy.
“Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy.
Or:
“Have mercy on us, O Lord.”
For we have sinned against you.
Show us, O Lord, your mercy.”
And grant us your salvation.

Gloria
1st Reading - Jonah 3:1-5, 10
Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace
to people of goodwill.
A Reading from the first Book of the Prophet Jonah
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying:
“Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you.”
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD’S bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing,
“Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, “
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast
and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.
When God saw by their actions how they turned from
their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to
them;
he did not carry it out.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

“Let us pray.”
“Almighty ever-living God, direct our
actions according to your good pleasure,
that in the name of your beloved Son we
may abound in good works. Through
our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who
lives and reigns with you in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever.”
Amen.
Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;
teach me your paths,
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my savior. R.
Remember that your compassion, O LORD,
and your love are from of old.
In your kindness remember me,
because of your goodness, O LORD. R.
Good and upright is the LORD;
thus he shows sinners the way.
He guides the humble to justice
and teaches the humble his way. R.
2nd Reading - 1 Corinthians 7:29-31
The Profession of Faith
Nicene Creed
A Reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the
Corinthians
I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out.
From now on, let those having wives act as not having
them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as
not rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using
the world as not using it fully. For the world in its
present form is passing away.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent
and believe in the Gospel. R.
I believe in one God, the Father
almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things
visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before
all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with
the Father; through him all things were made. For us
men and for our salvation he came down from heaven
(bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin
Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day in accordance with the
Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to
judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have
no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver
of life, who proceeds from the Father and Son, who with
the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has
spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy,
catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to
come. Amen.
or
Gospel - Mark 1:14-20
The Lord be with you. And with your Spirit.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee
proclaiming the gospel of God:
“This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at
hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and
his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they
were fishermen. Jesus said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.
He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son
of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a
boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they
left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired
men and followed him.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his
only Son, our Lord, (bow) who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended
into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand
of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to
judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy
Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body and life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us
our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against
us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil.
“Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously
grant us peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy
we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as
we wait upon the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now
and for ever.

St. Michael Parish Prayer
The Prayer of St. Francis
before the Cross at San Damiano
MOST HIGH glorious God, bring light to the darkness
of my heart. Give me right faith, certain hope, and perfect charity, insight, and wisdom, so that I can always
observe Thy holy and true
command. Amen.
Dear Friends,
This new year brings to
mind the needs of our parish. Many
are asking for their contribution
statements for their tax returns. I
am so grateful to God for you who
give so generously to our parish.
You give of yourself through
prayer, through service, and
through money.
Would you consider an increase in your financial giving if
your blessings from God make that
possible for you? We truly need to
increase our offertory. Over the
past three years our offertory has
remained steady; but our expenses
for the parish and especially the
school have increased. Yes, we
have savings. However, we want to
use these savings for major expenses and emergencies, or even
for creative projects in the future.
We will instead use those savings
this fiscal year (ending on June
30th) for our routine running of the
parish.
I have been very prudent in
our spending with the help of my
staff and Finance Council. Now I
believe it is time to let you know
that we either need to increase our
offering or we will have to make
unwanted cuts in the future. Let’s
not wait until we are faced with a
difficult decision. Again, please
consider if you can increase your
generous gift to God through His
Church in our parish.
Love, Fr. Pete

CHANGE OUR LIVES
In today’s first reading, Jonah, sent by God to
warn the people, storms through Nineveh, frightening the citizens out of their wits. It works! They repent before Jonah makes his way through a third of
the city, and God sees “by their actions” how they
have turned from evil.
Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that
“the world in its present form is passing away.” He
calls for a change of heart. He stops short of telling
them to set aside their everyday lives, but still he
urges them—rather mysteriously—to live as though
they aren’t doing the things they’re doing.
Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries,
“The kingdom of God is at hand!” The apostles-tobe abandon their nets and follow him. Thus in all the
readings we hear an invitation to a radical and immediate change in our lives.

Brecksville, 44141
“God became man that man might become
God.” This famous quote made by Athanasius in
the fourth century discloses the church teaching
known as ‘theosis’: that our destiny is to become
one with God. Fr. Michael Lee, a priest of the
Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma, will provide insight into the meaning of this teaching for
the modern world. Father will also give us insight
as to how this transformation can be realized and
how does the mystery of the Eucharist exemplify
this transformation.
Come, join us as we hear a positive
message to start off the New Year. Father’s
presentation is free. All are welcome! For further
information you may call 440-526-1818.
Sick and Homebound
Our parish staff and Eucharistic Ministers are

“The reason for our success is the dedication of our teachers, their willingness to go the extra mile, and always
strive to take the students to the next level. Our students are encouraged to try new adventures and never to
back down from a challenge,” said Campisi.
“Another reason for our success is our parents. Their dedication to our school, commitment to Catholic Education, and their willingness to work with the administration, teachers, and staff help create a
partnership that is most valuable. Our goal is to graduate students who are productive individuals,
concerned about others, involved in their community, and who will make this world a better place by
striving to share their faith with others by word and example.”
