Led by Professor John Izod, this course will be structured around film screenings and
discussion sessions to provide an accessible introduction to the Western film genre.
As well as viewing films such as Peckilnpah’s The Wild Bunch and Ron Howard’s The
Missing, we will illustrate and discuss such questions as ‘Where did the Western
come from?’ ‘Why was it once so popular in the USA and overseas?’ ‘What happened
when the frontier closed?’ Spaces on this course are limited so book early to avoid

Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler Mark
Schultz is languishing in obscurity and poverty

Andrew Neyman is an ambitious young jazz
drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to
the top of his elite east coast music conservatory.
Terence Fletcher, an instructor equally known for
his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods,

Discovering Andrew, Fletcher transfers him into
his band, forever changing the young man’s life.
Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection quickly
spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher
continues to push him to the brink of both his
ability and his sanity.
When sorority queen Elle’s boyfriend packs
up for Harvard Law and reunites with an old
sweetheart from prep school, she rallies all her
resources and gets into Harvard, determined to
win him back. But law school is a far cry from
the comforts of her poolside and the mall. Elle
must wage the battle of her life, for her guy, for
herself and for all the blondes who suffer endless
indignities every day.
The production is ideal for newcomers to opera
with its contemporary staging, and a running time

rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic
march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in
