Annual Meeting Update
On the heels of the very successful 2014 Learn, Serve, Lead Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL, the Ad
Board is already in the early stages of planning for the 2015 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD. Your
feedback in the post meeting survey is crucial in guiding the Ad Board toward topics that are high
priority for OSR reps and for medical students around the country. Based on the feedback we received,
we are currently beginning to propose potential session topics for 2015 that are relevant for OSRs.
OSR Special Interest Groups
At the Annual Meeting in Chicago, the Ad Board introduced OSR Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in an
effort to better engage OSR reps throughout the year and to facilitate high level discussions and
initiation of projects regarding various topics important to medical students and the academic medicine
community. At that meeting, we asked reps to vote on the topics you felt were of greatest interest to the
OSR, and the top 5 topics were chosen as the inaugural SIGs. Each SIG is associated with one of the 5
OSR committees, and the regional delegates in each committee will oversee the organization of the
SIGs. The 5 inaugural SIGs and their associated committees are as follows:
-Curriculum Innovation - Medical Education Committee
-Wellness and Balance - Student Affairs Committee
-Business and Medicine - Legislative Affairs Committee
-Technology and Healthcare - Communications Committee
-Financial Aid and Student Debt - Community and Diversity Committee
To sign up for one or more of the SIGs, please fill out this form and your regional delegate will be in
touch soon with details. More information can be found on the SIG website. Please contact me with any
questions you may have!
AAMC Joint Administrative Board Meeting
During the December Ad Board meeting, the OSR Ad Board had the privilege of sharing a joint lunch
discussion with members of the Administrative Boards of the Council of Deans (COD), Organization of
Resident Representatives (ORR), Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS), Council of
Teaching Hospitals (COTH), and the AAMC Board of Directors. The theme of this lunch discussion
was the learning environment, and the groups worked together to identify major issues on the topic and
to brainstorm potential ways to address the challenges we are currently facing.

Ad Board Projects Updates
Currently there are two major projects that are nearing completion. The Legislative Affairs Committee is
working on putting together a succinct infographic, termed the ACA Perspectives Series, which is
designed to give students a brief history of the healthcare system in the U.S. from the WWII era until the
inception of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Release of the series is aimed for the spring of 2015. The
Medical Education Committee is building a primer on Medical Education Research as a resource for
students aspiring to get involved in research related to medial education. The primer will include helpful
tips for finding a mentor and a research project, examples of “gold-standard” research projects in
medical education, potential timelines for doing research during undergraduate medical education, and
more. The primer is currently being vetted by the Section for Medical Education Scholarship Research
and Evaluation (MESRE), a branch of the Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) of the AAMC. The
primer is expected to be completed in the spring of 2015.
