Dan is working with the Kizer family’s dementia awareness foundation. There are many types of dementia from many sources ranging from trauma induced to illness. The Kizer FTD Awareness Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to shedding light on this ever increasing problem. They are involved because after a five year search, their mother, Yolanda Collazos Kizer was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia. They had never heard of FTD before January 2012, and now they live with it daily. It is surprising to learn how few people, even in the medical community, have heard about it. This disease has no cure, little to no treatment, and a 2–7 year life expectancy after diagnosis. However, it has been discovered that commitment to exercise, nutrition, and stress reduction has had a significantly positive impact on overall health for suffers. In order to increase awareness, the family started “The Heart and Sol Wellness Festival” now entering its 2nd annual event on March 7, 2015. This is an enlightening event with a medley of medical, health, and wellness educational booths, and activities for all ages. It deals with all sorts of dementias including from concussions. Dan will again provide a free football camp for kids and lead a panel of former NFL players and doctors to answer the parents’ questions about concussions, brain/head health (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)), and playing youth football. To kick off the Heart and Sol Festival later in the year, the X-NFL Celebrity Golf Tournament will take place at 8:00 am on Wednesday January 28, 2015 at The Legacy Golf Club.
