HEALTH NEWS
“Mandarin oranges” is a term that applies to an entire group of citrus fruits. This group includes
such varieties as Satsuma, Clementine, Dancy, Honey, Pixie, and tangerines in general. Most
are sweeter than their other citrus cousins, have a bright orange skin that is easy to peel, and
inner segments that are easily separated. There are seeded and seedless varieties. The terms
“mandarin orange” and “tangerine” are often used interchangeably. This can be confusing,
because although a tangerine is a mandarin orange, not all mandarin oranges are tangerines.
Tangerines are the most common variety of fresh mandarin orange found in the United States.
When selecting mandarins, choose fruits that are unblemished and heavy for their size. Avoid
those with cuts, soft spots, or mold. They may be stored in a cool, dark spot for a few days, but
ideally should be refrigerated to extend shelf life up to two weeks.
Mandarins are fat free, saturated fat free, cholesterol free, sodium free, and an excellent source
of vitamin C and a good source of vitamin A. Mandarin oranges also contain the carotenoids
beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. Beta-carotene functions as an antioxidant, but it can also be converted into
retinol, which is the form of vitamin A used by cells in the eyes for vision and to support the immune system. Lutein
and zeaxanthin are antioxidants that protect the retina from damage and may prevent age-related macular degeneration.
It is scientifically established that citrus fruits, especially oranges, have many proven health benefits. Moreover, it is
now being appreciated that the other biologically active, non-nutrient compounds found in citrus fruits such as phytochemical antioxidants; soluble and insoluble dietary fibers play a vital role in reduction in the risk for cancers, many
chronic diseases like arthritis, and from obesity and coronary heart diseases.
