Cedarvale Orchids
Catalogue 2015
Dendrobium speciosum var grandiflorum ‘Jelita’ 2014
www.cedarvaleorchids.com
NOTES FROM THE EDITORS
Welcome to the 2015 edition of the Cedarvale Orchids catalogue. This is our official publication available in both printed and online versions
which focuses on Australian native orchid species and hybrids.
It is the start of another year and as we write this catalogue the nursery looks really great despite our struggle with the Queensland drought
during the early part of Summer. However after recent downpours the dams are now full and we are smiling again. The plants have never
looked so good.
Last year’s flowering was down in quantity but there was still some quality flowers amongst them. We are now starting to see some of our
breeding with new parents such as ‘Heather’ and am very impressed with the results both in our nursery and the comments from customers
who have flowered some of the seedlings.
This catalogue again lists a lot of Den speciosum crosses with some of the more popular lines being repeated. It is our opinion we never made
enough of some crosses and really think they will be so good we wanted to increase the opportunity for customers to acquire these plants.
And again.... we still believe that our seedlings are well grown and will continue to grow readily once acquired by you. As always they are well
established in their pots and very large for the category in which they are sold. We consider that these seedlings are extremely good value for
money.
We made the decision to break up and release almost all of our breeding and display plants and this program is well under way with the
divisions becoming established and we expect to release these through a divisions listing on our website www.cedarvaleorchids.com later in the
year. If you do not have access to the internet - simply send us a SAE with your request. Many of these clones have not been released before.
The plants consist of Dendrobium species, mostly speciosum. Other plants such as Den bigibbum will be available as advised. The list is
generally updated early in the year and sometimes the demand is such that only the early responses get their requests satisfied. We plan to
provide you with first access to these special releases and do hope you can take advantage of these special offers. After a time those plants not
acquired will be released to the orchid public via the internet. So if you would like to be added to the list of recipients let us know.
Den speciosum ‘Heather (2014)
Den speciosum ‘Samford’s Doyen’ (2011)
Den speciosum ‘Impressive’ (2009)
2015 will see our involvement in three extra shows – The Castle Hill International Orchid Fair (a 2-day event in April), The Ipswich Plant Expo (a
2-day event in March) and The Brisbane International Garden Show (BIGS) (a 4-day event in October). Details of these are outlined on the
Events page on our website. Should you wish to obtain any further information about the shows we attend please send us an email.
Enjoy the 2015 catalogue. Don’t forget if you are up this way we would love to have you visit.... but always phone before you come – it is a long
way to come to find no-one home.
And as always good luck and good growing.

background colours and possibly increased flower counts.
CV971/11
D Gundy Moon x speciosum v speciosum ‘Windermere’
HOT/COLD (6% bigibbum)
The pod parent carries medium-sized sprays of very solid texture cream flowers with maroon

some of each.

CV909/10
D Elegant Heart 'Springtime' x speciosum var curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC = D Jayden
HOT/COLD (6% bigibbum)
A remake of CV811/09. We only had small numbers but they grew so well and hold such promise
that we had to make it again. From the 2013 catalogue - “‘Springtime’ is our best D Elegant Heart
having very large autumn toned well presented flowers with a rich pink lip mated this time with the
highly award D speciosum ‘Daylight Moon’ in an endeavour to produce beautifully shaped and
presented flowers on arching spikes with hopefully moderate to high flower count.”

D (Coote x Aussie Quest) x speciosum var speciosum 'National White' HCC/AOC
HOT/COLD (3% bigibbum)
Pod parent is medium sized flower with maroon overtones flower, white segments and dark lip. The
pollen parent is known to produce high flower counts on strong upright spikes and if the colour is

CV918/10
50mm**
HOT/COLD (3% bigibbum)
Same pod parent as for CV913/10 but the pollen parent has flowers of a much heavier texture and

toned flowers on medium spikes.
CV915/10

The mating of two top D speciosum - an FCC crossed with an AM. The result should be nothing short
of championship quality if we get the aspects of the ‘Moon’ blended with the quality variety
speciosum aspects of ‘Heather’. Offered previously as CV790/09.
CV944/10
D speciosum v (speciosum 'Heather' AM/ANOS x speciosum 'Jessie')
The results of this cross should be nothing short of championship quality for type form speciosums.
Both are clear whites on arching sprays of heavily textured flowers. A must for the enthusiast.

speciosum ‘Heather’.
CV950/10
D speciosum v (speciosum 'Impressive' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)
$10 – 50mm
$13 – 80mm
As referred to previously ‘Impressive’ is an outstanding orchid producing spikes of almost a metre in
length and carrying 100+ flowers with an 80mm high base flower. If we can get the right result by
introducing ‘Daylight Moon’ then every resulting plant should be championship quality.
CV952/10
D speciosum v (grandiflorum 'Jelita' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)
There have been some spectacular intervarietal plants made between var grandiflorum and ‘Daylight
Moon’. I expect that the plants from this cross will be equal to or better than anything made
previously. ‘Jelita’ is an outstanding var grandiflorum. (see front cover picture of ‘Jelita’)
Page 6
50mm/80mm
D speciosum v (speciosum 'Dreamtime' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)
‘Dreamtime’ has been around for many years and is one of the better earlier collected type plants
producing very large white flowers of substantial quality. Selfing of this plant produced one which I
called ‘Impressive’ which is an outstanding plant in any language. So mating with the highest
awarded speciosum ‘Daylight Moon’ seemed a must.
CV949/10
50mm/80mm
D speciosum v (curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC x speciosum 'Jessie')
I always thought that ‘Heather’ x ‘Daylight Moon’ would produce some extraordinary speciosums and
I think that ‘Jessie’ is not far behind ‘Heather’ in its quality aspects. So had to do this one to see if the
results would be similar or as good as the ‘Daylight Moon’/’Heather’ cross.

progeny of exceptionally strong colour, flower size and flower count. (see front cover picture of
‘Jelita’)
CV954/10
D speciosum v curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC x 'Jacqueline'
$10 – 50mm
$13 – 80mm
You can never have too many var curvicaule made with ‘Daylight Moon’ and ‘Jacqueline’. At least
that is what I think and having made it a number of times previously I decided to make it again
because more people deserve to have one of the better var curvicaule.
CV955/10
D speciosum v (boreale 'Atherton Lassie' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)
50mm/80mm
The pod plant produces an incredible display of medium-sized white flowers on upright spikes well
above the foliage. Adding the presentation and texture of ‘Daylight Moon’ should produce a
wonderful result.
CV957/10
D Redman x speciosum v capricornicum 'Pine Mtn'

D Tyabb 'Best' x speciosum v speciosum 'Windermere' = D Angus

well above the foliage. Plant growth should be compact and stout.

(ex Down Under Native Orchids)
The parentage of D Redman is D Avril’s Gold x Jazz both of which produce colourful solid flowers. We
are looking to carry the colour through together with the texture and presentation of the v

CV964/11
50mm/80mm
D speciosum v (curvicaule 'Misty Mtn' HCC/ANOS x 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC) x (curvicaule 'Blake'
AM/ANOS x 'Misty Mtn' HCC/ANOS)
The blood line in this cross has to be one of the best in the var curvicaule world and I would expect
that the results should be amongst the best of that var curvicaule world.
CV960/10
50mm**/80mm
D speciosum v (speciosum 'Kate's Special' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)
‘Kate’s Special’ is one of the better white variety speciosum and I would put it in a similar league to
‘Jessie’ and ‘Heather’. Crossed with ‘Daylight Moon’ should produce a similar result and the only way
to find the best result is purchase some of these three crosses and flower them.

D speciosum var (speciosum 'National White' HCC/AOC x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)

were determined to re-make it when the parents became available. Here it is! A must for the D
speciosum enthusiast.
CV790/09
D speciosum var (curvicaule ‘Daylight Moon’ FCC/AOC x speciosum 'Heather' AM/ANOS)

CV791/09
D speciosum var (curvicaule 'Paradiso' x grandiflorum 'Kroombit Gold' HCC/AOC)
‘Paradiso’ is up there with the best of the variety curvicaule and with the right culture should compete
with ‘Daylight Moon’. ‘Kroombit Gold’ is one of the better var grandiflorum producing large deep gold
flowers on large arching sprays. Some of the intervarietals from this cross should be stand-outs in
years to come.
CV792/09
D speciosum var (curvicaule 'Paradiso' x speciosum 'Heather' AM/ANOS)
Given that we think ‘Paradiso’ is a rival to ‘Daylight Moon’ this cross should produce similar results to
CV790/09. Time and patience will tell.
CV794/09
D speciosum var curvicaule 'Jacqueline' x 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC
$17 –100mm
$22 –125mm
When we started to flower this cross we were amazed at the quality of the results of all the progeny.
We have never had a cross produce so many champions as this and just had to remake it. A must for all
D speciosum enthusiasts!!

The pod parent here is a huge growing var curvicaule with canes the size of an intervarietal D

D speciosum ('PR' x 'JR') x var speciosum 'Heather' AM/ANOS
‘Heather’ should introduce the presentation and heavy texture making this a true intervarietal of var

canes and will require plenty of space as they reach flowering size.

CV800/09
D speciosum var curvicaule 'Gloucester' x 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC
This should result in var curvicaule with a difference. ‘Gloucester’ was a much favoured plant of Ted
Gregory and used extensively in his breeding programme. It is a different style of plant to the much
favoured var curvicaule of ‘Daylight Moon’, ‘Misty Mtn’, ‘Palmerston’ ilk having much taller var
grandiflorum style canes and a much larger not quite as heavy segmented flower. So again mated with
the ‘Moon’ and getting the best of both worlds should produce some high quality flowers.
CV801/09
D speciosum var (speciosum 'Windermere' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)

CV804/09
D speciosum 'Trifid' x var curvicaule 'Misty Mtn' HCC/ANOS
The pod parent is a crossing of var curvicaule and var pedunculatum and carries very robust flowers on
compact plants… possibly the perfect result from such a cross. Mated with ‘Misty Mtn’ should produce
flowers of tremendous texture together with a potential increase in flower count. A must for the
enthusiast.

D speciosum var curvicaule ‘Daylight Moon’ FCC/AOC x 'Jacqueline'

If you are into intervarietal D speciosum crosses then this one is for you. A mating of the best of these
varieties.
CV821/09
$17 – 100mm
D Zip 'JMcM' x speciosum var curvicaule ‘Daylight Moon’ FCC/AOC = D Lisa Turner
The results of this cross should be large purple splashed flowers with solid purple lips on medium-sized
spikes held well and truly above the foliage and loads of them. Should make beautiful specimen plants.
CV820/09

D speciosum var (pedunculatum 'Gloucester' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon')

yellow to gold flowers of exceptional quality on small compact plants.
CV818/09

D speciosum var (pedunculatum 'Irvine Bank' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)
The pod parent is an extremely robust plant for its type and has been questioned by ‘knowledgeable’
orchidists about its credentials. Produces classic var pedunculatum flowers on robust upright spikes
and mated here with the ‘Moon’ should produce flowers of exceptional quality on upright spikes above
compact but extremely robust plants.

CV822/09
D speciosum var grandiflorum 'Phena's Gold' x 'Ted's Orange'

parent should produce nothing else but GOLD, GOLD, GOLD!
CV823/09
D speciosum var curvicaule 'Dave's Moon Gold' x 'Blew Moon'
Looking for a bench quality result with the potential for gold var curvicaule type flowers.

D Redman x speciosum var capricornicum 'Pine Mtn'
D speciosum var (pedunculatum 'Tumbi' x grandiflorum 'Cania Gorge')
(ex Down Under Native Orchids)
Looking for a similar result to CV861/11 with the Cania Gorge being deep gold but not orange toned.
Definitely worth purchasing some of each to see which gives the best result.

D speciosum var grandiflorum 'Will's Gold' x speciosum 'Trifid'
50mm/100mm
50mm/100mm
(ex Down Under Native Orchids)
The pollen parent has the style of a var pedunculatum on steroids and matched with a strong gold
flowered var grandiflorum should produce startling quality bench plants irrespective of the gene mix.
CV864/10
D speciosum var curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC x 'Gloucester'
CV865/10
‘Gloucester’ is a var curvicaule with a different style to most of the main theme var curvicaule in use
today. It is a tall growing large sprayed, large flowered plant used extensively by Ted Gregory in his
crosses. Has the potential to produce some var curvicaule with a difference and has the best of today’s
partners in ‘The Moon’.
D speciosum var curvicaule 'Gloucester' x 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC
This is the reverse cross of CV864/10 and as I have said in the past it could be very interesting to see if
the role reversal produces anything different. So having some of both of these is a must for the
speciosum enthusiast. (With plenty of space over the coming years)
Page 10
50mm/100mm
D speciosum var (pedunculatum 'Tumbi' x grandiflorum 'Mick's Orange')
(ex Down Under Native Orchids)
The pod parent is one of the better var pedunculatum with heavily segmented flowers on strong
upright spikes from short compact canes. ‘Mick’s Orange’ is one of the few deep orange var
grandiflorum with ‘Beranghi Gold’ heritage. Looking for this brilliant gold to be passed onto plants with
short sturdy canes but clouds of flowers overhead. If it works it should be a gold vision.

D speciosum var (grandiflorum 'Phena's Gold' x curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC)
(ex Down Under Native Orchids)
‘Phena’s Gold’ comes from the fabled Mt Larcom Gold x Kroombit Gold’ made by Ted Gregory many
years ago but can still hold its head high on the show benches today. Mated with the fabled ‘Daylight
Moon’ most if not all the result should be standout bench quality plants with the best having long deep
gold sprays of large heavily segmented flowers.

CV905/10
D Victorian Stripe x D Midas Touch
The pod parent used here produces masses of gaudy splashed purple flowers high above the foliage

$10 – 50mm
$17 –100mm
I expect this cross to produce some of the better flowered speciosum plants available today. The pod
parent speaks for itself with all its champion attributes. The pollen parent ‘George’ is an outstanding
plant of this variety producing heavily textured chunky flowers on spikes up to a metre in length. If we
get the same resulting length in spike on compact plants with the best attributes of ‘The Moon’ then I
stand by the statement of better flowered speciosum plants available today.

D speciosum var (curvicaule 'Daylight Moon' FCC/AOC x speciosum 'Bevan')
It takes many years to find out which speciosum plants are the better breeders and ‘Bevan’ is one of
those. We have now come to realize that it produces some brilliant results even though it may never
achieve a quality award. I put it in the same class for this aspect as ‘Windermere’. So we had to mate
it with the most highly awarded speciosum to produce what could be nothing short of startling.

may require enormous space but should be much admired by all who see them. A must for the
