Dear parishioners,
As you may recall, the roads and sidewalks were very icy on Sunday morning, January 18, which affected the Mass attendance and weekly collection. Five days later, Central Jersey’s first measurable winter storm for 2014-15 began -- late Friday evening,
January 23 -- and ended on Saturday, Jan. 24, resulting in a couple inches or so of snow. Two days later, on Monday, January 26, at
around 7:45 a.m. (during the 7:30 morning Mass), Winter Storm Juno arrived in Hamilton. At 10 a.m. (and into the afternoon), the
Weather Channel forecast was for heavy snowfall from around 6 p.m. till around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, with the snow ending Tuesday
night at around 9 p.m. At some point on Monday, the forecast was changed, predicting that the heavy snow would begin six hours
later than originally thought, i.e., at midnight (instead of 6 p.m.), and continuing till around 9 a.m., with the snow ending at around
1:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. As you know, our area actually received only a few inches of snow (2.5 to 4 inches), even though
much of Mercer County had been expecting 8 to 12 inches (AccuWeather Inc.) or 14 to 18 inches (National Weather Service
[NWS]). According to an Internet article, the storm “veered father east than expected – perhaps 30 to 60 miles”. (“ ‘Flakegate’ and
the incredible shrinking snow totals,” Anthony R. Wood, The Philadelphia Inquirer, philly.com; last updated at 1:08 a.m. on Wed.,
Jan. 28.) The NWS based its forecast on that of the ECMWF or Euro model -- one of 57 weather-forecasting computer models. In
October 2012, the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) correctly predicted Hurricane Sandy’s landfall
(and did so a week in advance). This time, however, its computer model was off the mark. Ironically, the NWS’s own American
model was the one that correctly predicted Winter Storm Juno’s effect on Central Jersey and metro Philadelphia. The Global Forecast System (GFS) model was built and is operated by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP; consisting of nine
centers), which is a unit of the National Weather Service (NWS), which itself is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the U.S. Department of Commerce. As one of our staff members said, we plan for the worst (scenario) and
hope for the best (outcome). Except for hourly workers and small businesses, we can be grateful that this storm was not as bad as
was predicted.
On Monday evening, during the snowstorm, I received two voicemails, each asking if there would be the usual Mass and
confessions at 7:00 p.m. Our parish does not cancel Mass during a snowstorm, because the priests’ residence (in the rectory,
along with the parish office) is near the church and a priest is able to walk through the snow to the church. Most parishes follow the
same policy. Some parishes do cancel Mass due to snow or ice, but usually the priest’s residence in those parishes is in a separate
building that is not near the church (and therefore it might be dangerous for the priest to attempt to drive to church). For the same
reason, it is not a sin if you miss Mass (on a Sunday or holy day of obligation) when it is too dangerous to drive (e.g., snow or ice) –
or when you are sick (in which case your fellow parishioners would prefer you stay home, so as to not share your germs …).
As you know, today is Super Bowl Sunday. (If you would like to read a thought-provoking, spiritual reflection about this
day, please see youth minister Gez Ford’s weekly reflection on page 9.) Although we Americans use the Roman alphabet, we use
Arabic numerals (also known as Hindu-Arabic numerals). As Latin (Roman) Catholic Christians, however, we are also familiar with
Roman numerals. Prior to the 1960s and 1970s, they were familiar to most Americans and are still often used at the end of the
credits in movies. When the National Football League (NFL) and American Football League (AFL) held the first Super Bowl in
January 1967, they used the Roman numeral “I” for its designation and have continued that usage ever since. (In 1970, the AFL
merged into the NFL.) The Roman numerals are: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1,000). As fans of American
football know, the Super Bowl is played in the calendar year that follows the regular season. Therefore, although Super Bowl XLIX
is being played in the year MMXV, it will determine which team will be the league champion for the NFL’s MMXIV regular season
(based on post-season play). Our diocese was erected seven years prior to MDCCCLXXXVIII.
Tomorrow, February 2 – the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord -- is also World Day for Consecrated Life, which was
instituted by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1997. Please pray for all the religious men and women who have made commitments to God
and his Church, in the consecrated life, including (1) Sister Sandra Kulick, S.S.J., who is a Sister of St. Joseph of Philadelphia and
serves our parish as a pastoral associate, (2) Lori Hoos, who is a member of the Secular Institute of Missionaries of the Kingship of
Christ (SIM) and serves as our parish’s director of music, and (3) Father Jim McGoldrick, S.M., who is a member of the Society of
Mary (Marist Fathers) and serves our parish as a retired priest “in residence” in the rectory of our parish.
The Sacrament of First Reconciliation will be received by the second-grade students of our parish this Saturday, February
7. Please pray for them, as they experience – for the first time – the joy of receiving God’s mercy, forgiveness, and love in the Sacrament of Penance.
God bless you.

in the parish office (rectory), at 609-585-7049, ext. 101.
From Monday, December 1, through Sunday, April 5— Holy Communion is being distributed under only one species (the Sacred Host)
instead of both species (the Sacred Host and the Precious Blood), because of the flu season. Under the principle of concomitance, we receive all of Jesus—Body, Blood, soul, and divinity, whole and entire—
under either species. Thus, we do not have to receive both species at
Communion.
NECROLOGY. In your charity, please pray for the soul of the Reverend Wilfrid B. Emmons, who served as the first pastor of St. Raphael
Parish (1943-71) and died on February 2, 1972. The Father Emmons
Conference Room (below St. Raphael Church) is named for him. Requiescat in pace.

"Saintly Stories"
(The Good News from Saint Raphael School)
If you are interested in having your children attend Saint Raphael School, please join us for
our upcoming “Open House” on Thursday, February 5, between 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Please
visit our website at: www.srsnj.org, and our facebook page "Saint Raphael School New
Jersey".
Pictured are several students with Lt. Christopher Nunziato, of
the State Police and Patricia Santucci, who delivered the cards
to the LEAD rally.
Saint Raphael School students show their support for police (local, state and, nationally) by
creating thank you cards. Friday, January 9, was Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. The
cards were presented at the LEAD rally in Neptune, NJ. The cards were made to show our
appreciation for law enforcement officers and to say “thank you.” Every time we have an
emergency, these men and women are there to help us. We need to support them and
keep them in our prayers.

FAMILY ROSARY NIGHT
FOOD PANTRY
Snow began falling Friday night and early Saturday morning and the
side streets were covered with snow. However, our first clients were
waiting for food before 6:00 am hoping that the Food Pantry would be
open. We did open at about 8:30 am, as soon as, most of our volunteers have arrived.
Thank you for all the help who came out, early in the morning, in spite
of the inclement weather. Thank you for the Confirmation students who
came out to assist in the food distribution. God bless you all.
Even with the weather, we assisted 60 families with food.
We still are in short supply of the following items: cookies, crackers,
canned fruit, jello, pasta, mac and cheese, pancake mix, toothpaste,
shampoo, bar soap and detergents.
PLEASE - No Clothing
Next “Reach Out Saturday” is February 7
9:00 am - 11:00 am, Parish Center
We are always looking for new volunteers. Remember, volunteering
once does not commit you to volunteer every time, but we hope you will
enjoy it enough to return at your convenience.
NURSING HOME
Tuesday, February 10, 6:15 - 8:00 pm. Our next Bingo party for the
residents of Hamilton Grove Healthcare will be our Hearts and Flowers
Bingo. Special prizes this month will be related to Valentine’s Day. Meet
on the second floor of the facility which is located on Hamilton Avenue,
near the intersection of Klockner. All are welcome, including Confirmation and other students!
TRENTON AREA SOUP KITCHEN
Wednesday, April 29, 10:00 am - 1:15 pm. Next serving commitment
at TASK. We meet in the St. Raphael parking lot for carpooling to Trenton, and return about 1:15 pm.
Adult Education Program. If you have 1 1/2 hours to spend (either
morning or afternoon), on one or more days a week, you are encouraged to consider becoming a tutor with the one-on-one adult education
program at TASK. No special education is required. All students have
workbooks related to their needs. Tutors supply guidance and encouragement. It is jointly rewarding experience.
For more information about either activity, or if you have a suggestion for a new activity, please call Kathy Wooley at 585-4307.
The St. Raphael School PTA Spirituality Committee
would like to invite you to join us for the Family Rosary on Friday, February 6. This is an ongoing ministry that meets on the first Friday of each month
during the school year (except for the months of
January and April). At 7:30 pm, in the All Purpose
Room below the church. For more information,
please contact Lina Hollendonner at 609-499-0501
or email: [email protected].
SAINT VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY
During this past holiday season, our society helped three families
with rent expenses for $1,665. Also, jointly with three other Mercer
District Conferences, we helped a family of six to keep a roof over
their heads with rent for $2,500. The society also provided five families with Walmart cards for Christmas.
Thanks to all contributing parishioners for all that you do for your
brothers and sisters in need.
SOCIETY of SAINT VINCENT de PAUL
In the Gospel today we read that because Jesus spoke
with authority his reputation spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. As his disciples, we can also
speak with authority when we put our faith into actions by
helping the poor and suffering.
Have you considered answering the call to serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?
For more information about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and
the programs that reach out to those in need, please call the parish
office (rectory) at 609-585-7049.

YR 10,WK 24, 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Leading Teens Closer To Christ!
SOUP A(ND) BOWL SUNDAY
Every year at this time I seem to break out into “prophet of doom” mode, and it’s important that you
realize it’s not because I’m a Brit or that I have anything against the Super Bowl. Actually I have
always enjoyed both playing and watching competitive sports. Though at times I may have gotten
‘lost’ in my support of teams, (in so far as support turns into obsession and obsession into fanaticism etc). Nevertheless, the point of this little blurb is not to scold people about the fanaticism of
sport, and in this case, the Super Bowl, but it is to draw attention to the things that surround the
Super Bowl. Last year, according to Greg Abbot, the Texas attorney general, “Clemmie Greenlee
was expected to sleep with 25-50 men per day.” While it is truly difficult to estimate the increase in
statistics for prostitution, sex trafficking, and the sexual abuse of minors at events such as the Super Bowl, it is fairly clear that there is a significant increase. The reason for this little ditty is simply
to draw the parallels between our incredibly wealthy society and that of those less wealthy. Here in
America, the difference can be clearly seen in a bowl of soup and a Super Bowl. Even if we do not
consider the increase in licentious acts as well as many other manifestations of vice, there are
flights, game tickets, hotel rooms, TV rights, commercials and souvenirs to be bought, all adding to
the hype of “the big game”. This scene is replayed in all sports throughout the world. We continue
to be sucked into the fact that leisure is (all) important but fall prey to the natural enslavement of a
money-spinning vortex, a fiscal and an emotional roller coaster. The psalmist tells us this week to
“harden not our hearts.” St. Paul tells us he “wishes us to be free of all anxieties.” And Jesus displays his desire to rid us of all binding spirits. Let us look to follow Him more closely and focus
more on a simple bowl of soup rather than a Super Bowl. Let us not be seduced by the hype, the
commercials, the glamour of wealth and self-gratification, but instead look to follow Him, to serve
others, and to selflessly give of ourselves the gifts we have been freely given.

HELP A TEEN (Grow, Eat, Learn, Be Formed, Have Fun, Meet the Pope)
The will be 2 major events that we would like to start fundraising for this year. For the summer
Steubenville Retreat in New York City, August 5-7, the approximate cost for a group of 30 teens
will be $8,000. For the trip to Philadelphia on September 22-25 to see the Holy Father, the approximate cost for a day trip for a group with 30 teens is to be determined, but initial estimates
suggest between $3,000 and $6,000.

Here are some ways you can help our parish’s LifeTeen youth ministry: Financially and anonymously adopt a teen. Send in fundraising ideas to the youth minister via e-mail or phone (609-456
-8857). You can donate transportation freely for the various trips or you can offset our weekly food
bill by contacting Nadine at 609-456-8862 to discuss donations, dishes, monetary aid or culinary
skills. There are so many ways you can help us as we continue to strive to lead teens closer to
Christ. Thanks ahead of time!

In today’s Gospel, we hear that Jesus is our healer and teacher. Many
times he speaks to us at unexpected moments. So often, the words of
the hymns we sing proclaim the very power of his name. If a person,
with an unclean spirit can clearly name Jesus the “Holy One of God,”
how much more should we be able to enthusiastically proclaim the
Good News in our song? May God help us to be bold in our prayer,
and yet quiet in our hearts to listen to his message for each of us.
God bless you,
Lori Hoos
