Letter from our Executive Director
On behalf of our staff, faculty and Board of
Directors, welcome to the Community School
of Music and Arts (CSMA). This year we are
celebrating ten years at Finn Center and 46
years of inspiring excellence through art and
music education for people of all ages and
abilities.
We are pleased to offer the community a
broad range of classes and programs—art
and music classes for preschoolers and their
parents, private music lessons, theory and
composition classes, fabric design, digital
arts and music, an audition-free adult chorus and more! Our programs are
designed to provide the opportunity for anyone to develop and nurture their
creativity and participate in the universal languages of music and art. Please
note that need-based financial aid is available for all on-site classes.
Beyond Finn Center, our school-based programs bring high quality, skillsbased visual arts and music education to over 15,000 K-8 children in Santa
Clara and San Mateo Counties. Our Art4Schools and Music4Schools programs
engage students in opportunities to build skills, grow in self-confidence, create
and collaborate. CSMA helps students receive a complete education that
prepares them for college, career and civic participation.
CSMA also joins with community partners to nourish the spark and excitement
of the arts. Collaborations with Stanford Live and the Silicon Valley African
Film Festival bring special performances to Tateuchi Hall. Our partnerships with
Abilities United, Achieve Kids and the Morgan Center for Autism allow us to
offer art, music and dance classes to developmentally-disabled adults and
teens with autism. There is something for everyone to enjoy and learn at CSMA!
Our success depends on the generous support of government, foundation
and corporate funders as well as individuals like you who believe in arts for
all. We are forever grateful for your continued support and the difference you
make in the lives of the aspiring artists and musicians in our community.
Sincerely,
Vickie Scott Grove
Executive Director

private music lessons 4 all
SMA has been providing private and group music instruction in Silicon Valley for over
40 years. Private music lessons are available for students of all levels and all ages on a
variety of instruments and voice. We include instruction in classical, contemporary, jazz and
popular styles. Our music program also provides performance opportunities for ensembles
and individuals.
CSMA has a large, multi-lingual faculty of over 100 professional musicians and educators,
including our Distinguished Teachers, recognized for their extraordinary professional
experience. Our faculty provides individualized attention, emphasizing development of solid
music fundamentals. This approach not only increases musical appreciation and ability for all
ages, but has been shown to build valuable skills associated with greater educational and life
achievement among youth.
Private music lessons take place once a week at a regularly scheduled time and may be 30, 45
or 60 minutes in length. Students must have an instrument available for daily practice.
In addition to providing excellent private teaching, CSMA offers a complete music education through

Bach, Mozart, & Beethoven. You know them; you love
them. But what other names contributed to the ornate
& sometimes delightfully gaudy music of the Baroque
Era & the stark & elegant Classical Era that followed?
These two eras, almost complete opposites of each
other, still dominate the concert hall, film, television &
practice rooms everywhere! In this class we’ll discover
what makes this music so popular & influential even in
the 21st Century. Tuition includes workbook & access to

elcome to the Preschool Program at the Community School of Music and Arts! CSMA’s preschool
program will set the stage for your child’s life-long love of learning. Our fun music and art classes
are designed around hands-on, play-based activities that allow children to explore, learn and create. With
a curriculum meeting top national standards, our classes provide key social and developmental stimuli
to help children nurture their natural, inner creativity. Our preschool faculty is composed of experienced,
professional educators that focus on arts experiences that parent and child can share together. This is an
experience that you and your preschooler should not miss!
• Parent/caregiver attendance is required for most

Reggio Emilia Learning
Some of our preschool faculty have trained
in the Reggio Emilia style of teaching and
incorporate this into their curriculum. In the
Reggio Emilia style, the music and art studios
are set for inquiry-based learning and the
teacher’s role is to be a collaborator with the
child, not just an instructor. The child is viewed
as an active constructor of knowledge. Rather
than being seen as the target of instruction,
the child has an active role as an apprentice.
The Reggio Emilia approach to teaching young
children puts the natural development of
children as well as the close relationships that
they share with their environment at the center
of its philosophy. Children learn through the
experience of touching, moving, listening,
seeing and hearing.
Can’t join us for a whole session, but don’t

“My passion is working with preschool-age children, giving
them opportunities to be creative in art. In the style of
Reggio Emelia, I provide a creative art environment that
gives children the opportunity to observe, inquire, explore &
use fine motor & cognitive skills. Art provides them with an
awareness of themselves & their surroundings.”
“I received my BFA in Pictorial Art from San Jose State
University. I am a practicing artist, creating original paintings,
prints & textiles for galleries & shops. I am passionate about
working with preschoolers & watching them discover color,
texture, shape & more through art materials. Their selfexpression & stories inspire me.”
