FREE AND EASY SENSIBILITY, otherwise

entertaining evenings so far in the cutting edge

series at Hahn Hall. The four Brooklyn Rider
musicians, violinists Johnny Gandelsman and
Colin Jacobsen, violist Nicholas Cords, and
cellist Eric Jacobsen dressed diversely to suit

expectation about classical
music performances.
Their mission, an ad libitum survey of most of
the cuts from their new album, The Brooklyn
Rider Almanac, also included Glenn Kotche’s
Ping Pong Fumble Thaw (2014), a UCSB Arts
& Lectures first ever musical commission in
celebration of the ensemble’s tenth anniversary.
Kotche, a drummer friend of Brooklyn Rider,
was inspired by the minimalist electronic
music of German artist Jens Massel. Ping Pong
Fumble Thaw exemplified the curious roots
Brooklyn Rider
and productive byways that inspire an artistic
collaborative process.
Brooklyn Rider Almanac is a study of the
collective spirit that allows artists of divergent
interests to find common creative ground, and is
modeled on the cross-disciplinary relationship
between the German composer Arnold
Schoenberg and Russian-born artist, Wassily
Kandinsky in the early twentieth century.
Each affected the other’s creative psyche and
their symbiotic friendship resulted in great art:

turn inspired Kandinsky’s
abstract masterpiece,
Impression III. The group of
artists orbiting Kandinsky
and Schoenberg, like the
creative friends of Brooklyn
Rider, published Der Blaue
Reiter Almanach in 1912,
an eclectic collection of
mutually inspired artwork,
essays, and music. The
Brooklyn Rider Almanac is a
collection of 13 short pieces
by the quartet’s musician
friends, most of them not,
strictly speaking, classical
musicians. An important
part of the Rider Almanac charter was that each
of the 13 composers frame their inspirational
source around work from some other discipline.
The fun for the audience was figuring out the
connections.
Among several short pieces from Brooklyn
Rider Almanac performed before intermission,
Daniel Cords’ piece, The Haring Escape (2012)
which opened the program, was based on the
distinctly colorful urban street art of Keith
Haring and was, like the artist, both dangerous
and brimming with life. Dig the Say (2012),
Vijay Lyer’s homage to jazz pianist James Brown
percolated with syncopated rhythms, thigh
slaps, and finger clicks, while Maintenance Music
(2012) by Dana Lyn was inspired by artist/
activist Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ Maintenance
Art Manifesto from 1969, which posited that
day-to-day commonplace acts be considered art.
The piece included a smoky-mellow cello tune
and melting tonalities.
Several more short pieces and two encores
from the Brooklyn Rider Almanac album made
up the busy second half of the program. Gonzalo
Grau’s Five-Legged Cat (2014), inspired by the
music of Chick Corea particularly pleased with
its tricky rhythms and heel stomps, a mélange of
the composer’s Venezuelan merengue heritage
colored by Corea’s cool jazz styling. The UCSB
Arts & Lectures commission, Ping Pong Fumble
Thaw was the highlight of the show though. Its
coy exchanges in pizzicato between the players,
reminiscent of the sounds from a table tennis
match, were a clever idea that made for a fun
entertainment.

WHEN IT RAINS,
DON’T LET YOUR
SPRINKLERS POUR
To avoid sprinklers coming
on when it’s raining, get a
free rain shut-off sensor
from the City of Santa
Barbara Water Conservation
Program. A rain shutoff sensor automatically
stops the sprinkler timer
from watering during and
immediately after a rain event. City of Santa Barbara water customers can call 5645460 to schedule a free water checkup for their home or business. At the checkup
a City Water Resources Specialist will hand out a rain sensor and instruct the
customer how to easily install the device.

Para evitar que los aspersores se prendan cuando está lloviendo, consigue un sensor
