Rockets Regular Season Notes:

Winning Formula: The Rockets allowed an opponent season-low 0 points off of turnovers vs. CHI on 2/4 on just six turnovers. Overall, when
turning the ball over 15 times or less, Houston is 14-4 this season. The Rockets led at the half vs. CHI on 2/4 and with the win moved to 28-2
when leading at the half. Houston held Chicago to 90 points and moved to 12-0 when holding an opponent to 90 points ore less. The Rockets
have protected home court particularly well since the turn of the New Year, going 6-1 at home in 2015.

A class of his own: James Harden ranks 1st in the NBA in scoring at 27.0 points per game, 2nd among non-point guards in assists per game
at 6.8 and 5th among all NBA guards in rebounding at 5.6. He continues to produce notable performances this season:
o
With 37 points at LAL on 1/25, Harden now has 21 games of 30+ points this season which is the most games of 30+ in the league.
Additionally, Harden set an NBA season-long streak for games with 30+ points with four from 1/19-1/25.
o
Harden poured in a season-high 45 points to go with 7 assists and 4 steals vs. IND on 1/19. This marked the 9th 40+ point
performance of his career and the 4th of the season.
o
After going 18-21 from the FT line at DEN on 12/17, Harden tied the single-game NBA high for FTM and FTA (FTM: 18, Butler CHI
and FTA: 21, James, CLE). With 14-17 FT on 1/23 at PHX, Harden leads the NBA in games with 10+ FTM at 16.
o
James Harden was selected to his third consecutive trip to the All-Star game (and third of his career). He is the first Rockets player
since Yao Ming to earn three consecutive All-Star nods (Yao Ming earned seven straight from 2003-09). Harden was named the
Western Conference Player of the Month for Dec., 2014 and Jan., 2015, making him the first Rockets player to win the award in
consecutive months and only the second (Olajuwon) to win it twice in the same season.
o
Harden led the Rockets to a 105-93 victory vs. DEN on 12/13 and registered totals of 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the
contest. This marked the third triple-double of his career and the first for any Rockets player this season.
o
In four different games this season (11/14 vs. PHI, 11/16 at OKC, 11/22 vs. DAL, 1/23 at PHX), Harden has scored the go ahead
basket with less than :90 seconds remaining in the game. The step back jumper Harden hit as time expired at PHX on 1/23 to
secure a 113-111 win over the Suns also marked his second career buzzer beater to win a game, with both coming against the Suns
(prev: Apr. 9, 2013 vs. PHX).

Rising to the Occasion: Rockets forward Donatas Motiejunas has been playing the best basketball of his career this season. He has
recorded five of his six 20-point performances this season, including the first back-to-back 20 point performances of his career (1/30 at BOS
and 1/31 at DET) and the first 20 point/10 rebound performance of his career with a new career-high 26 points and 12 rebounds at BOS on
1/30. After scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds vs. CHI, he has six double-doubles this season (2 in last 3 games). Motiejunas is
averaging a career best 11.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this season in a career-high 28.1 minutes per game. Motiejunas has recorded
31 games with 10+ points this season, which already surpasses his combined total of 24 games in his first two seasons in the NBA.

Comfort Zone: New Rocket Corey Brewer has thrived in his role coming off the Rockets bench since he was acquired by Houston. He has
provided double-digit scoring off the bench in 16 of his 23 games, including two 20+ point games (season-high 25 points at SAS on 12/28).
Additionally with 15 points and 10 rebounds at BOS on 1/30, Josh Smith recorded his first double-double as a Rocket, he has now provided
double-digit scoring of the bench in 12 of 18 games as a Rockets reserve (including two 20 point performances). The addition of the two
players has made a substantial impact on bench scoring, with the Rockets bench output up to 33.9 points per game since the two joined the
team in late December (12/22 vs. POR) as opposed to 21.5 points per game prior.

The Facilitator: Rockets guard James Harden ranks 2nd in the NBA among all non-point guards (12th overall) in assists per game at 6.8.
Harden set a new career-high for assists with 14 assists vs. ATL on 12/20. James Harden’s combined points per game scored and points
created through assists equals 43.9 points per game. This is the highest total in the league. Harden recorded his 11th double-double of the
season and league-leading 30 point/10 assist game at PHX on 1/23 with 33 points and 10 assists (the Rockets are 9-2 in games where he has
a double-double and 4-0 in his games with 30/10).

Free Throws: The Rockets have gotten to the free throw line at will so far this season. They rank 8th in the NBA in free throws attempted per
game at 24.5 per game and rank 10th in makes at 17.6 per game. The Rockets are headlined by NBA’s leading free throw man James
Harden. Harden leads the NBA in free throws made per game at 7.8 and in free throws attempted per game at 8.9. Ater Harden went 9-10
from the FT line at LAL on 1/25, the Rockets overall are 25-2 when either James Harden or Dwight Howard attempt 8+ free throws in a game.

Lock Down D: The Rockets are 3rd in the league in defensive rating, allowing 99.4 points per 100 possessions to their opponent. The Rockets
rank highly in some key defensive statistics this season as well:
o
James Harden ranks tied for 4th in the NBA in Defensive Win Shares at 2.9 (a stat that compares his individual defensive rating’s
impact on team success). James Harden ranks 3rd in total steals at 97, Trevor Ariza ranks 4th at 95 and Corey Brewer ranks T-9th
with 83. The Rockets allow their opponents tied for the T-7th lowest overall FG% at 44.0%.
o
Since adding Corey Brewer and Alexey Shved prior to the game vs. POR on 12/22, the Rockets have averaged 10.7 steals per
game, compared to 8.9 steals per game before the trade.
o
The Rockets as a whole rank 2nd in the NBA in steals per game at 9.8. The Rockets recorded their 22st game (just 48 games in to the
season) with 10+ steals after recording 10 steals at DET on 1/31. Something Houston did only 22 times all season in 2013-14.
o
Trevor Ariza recorded a career-high tying 6 steals in the win vs. MIA on 1/3, which also marked a Rockets individual season-high.
Ariza and Corey Brewer are tied for fifth in the league with 15 games of 3+ steals.
o
Dwight Howard averages 1.4 blocks per game, and among players who face five or more FGA per game within 5 feet of the rim, he
holds opponents to just 45.1% FG shooting, the 7th best mark in the NBA.

Rockets 2014-15 Game Notes
5

Blast Radius: The Rockets shooting from beyond-the-arc has been a huge key to success this year:
o
The Rockets lead the entire NBA in 3PT FGM per game at 11.8 (1.5 more per game than 2nd place GSW). At their current pace, the
Rockets are on track to make 959 3PT FG over the course of the 82 game season. This would shatter the NBA single season mark
of 890 3PT FG set by New York in 2012-13. Additionally, after making a three-pointer late in the 3Q of the home win vs. POR on
12/22, Jason Terry joined Ray Allen and Reggie Miller as the only players in NBA history to reach 2,000 3PT FG for their careers.
He currently sits at 2,027 made for his career.
o
On 1/15 vs. OKC, the Rockets went 16-36 (.444) from beyond the arc. This marked the 11th game this season the Rockets have hit
15+ 3PT FG setting an NBA single-season record for most such games in a season (2012-13 NYK and HOU, 10 games).
o
James Harden hit a career-high 8 3PT FG on just 11 attempts on 12/31 vs. CHA. This is the third most 3PT FG a Rockets player
has made in a regulation game, and ties the fewest attempts a Rockets player has hit 8+ 3PT FG on (Alston, 8-11, 3/16/08).
o
With Corey Brewer’s 6 three-pointers (6-8 3PT FG) vs. SAS on 12/28, the Rockets now have had five different players with 6 or
more threes in a game (Ariza, Beverley, Canaan and Harden). No other team in the league has more than two players who have
done it.
o
Trevor Ariza and James Harden headline the Rockets long range shooting. Harden has made 130 3PT FG (130-336, .387) good for
5th in the NBA and Ariza has made 112 3PT FG (112-340, .329) good for 9th in the NBA. Harden is on an 82 game pace to set the
single-season franchise record for 3PT FGM in a season at 217 (prev: 209 Brooks 2009-10).
o
The Rockets made 10+ 3PT FG in each of their first eight games and including last season nine straight overall (4/16/14 to 11/12/14).
This surpassed the longest streak in franchise history of seven straight games set in 2013. The Rockets tied the streak again with
nine straight from 11/19 through the 12/6. The two nine game streaks sit tied at the fourth the longest streaks in NBA history (2 shy of
record). Ultimately the Rockets have done it in 36 of 49 games (29-7), the most games of any team in the NBA.
o
On the defensive end, the Rockets are holding teams to 31.7% 3PT FG shooting, the 2nd lowest opponent 3PT FG%.

Double-Trouble: Two Rockets had double-doubles at BOS on 1/30. Donatas Motiejunas had 26 points and 12 rebounds while Josh Smith
poured in 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Rockets are 9-1 when this season when multiple players have double-doubles.

Monster in the Middle: With 23 points and 10 rebounds vs. GSW on 1/17, Dwight Howard now has 10 20 point/10 rebound games on the
year. Dwight Howard recorded his team-leading 19th double-double with an enormous 14 point, 17 rebound effort vs. IND on 1/19. This marked
a season-high defensive rebounds for him with 16 of his 17 rebounds coming on the defensive end.

Cleaning the Glass: Houston ranks T-5th in the NBA in offensive rebounding, with 12.0 per game. When outrebounding opponents this season,
the Rockets are 19-4. With a 50-37 advantage over CLE on 1/7, the Rockets have outrebounded their opponent by 10+ eight different times (80 in those games). The Rockets 57 rebounds vs. PHX on 12/6 marked a season-high.

Efficiency: James Harden recorded 26 points on 10-17 FG shooting at DET on 1/31. This was his 18th game scoring 25+ points on greater
than 50% FG shooting. This is the second most such games in the league (Davis, NOP 20 games). Harden recorded a streak of five straight
games recording 25+ points on greater than 50% FG shooting earlier this season (12/22-12/31) which marks the longest streak in the NBA this
season (Previous: 4 by Anthony, NYK and Davis, NOP) and matches the longest streak in the NBA since LeBron James did it in five straight
from 4/4-4/11/14.

Road Tested: The Rockets win at BOS on 1/30 marked a 3 game road winning streak. The Rockets have a six game road winning streak
under their belt already this season and in total have 3 separate road winning streaks of 3 games or more. Their 17-8 road mark for the
Rockets is good for the 2nd most road wins in the Western Conference (with DAL: 18-10) and the second best road winning percentage
amongst West teams at .680 (GSW: 16-6, .727). The Rockets 6 road wins in January marks the most road wins in a month since Nov. 2008.

Strong Start: The Rockets rolled to 31-14 in the first 45 games of the season. This ties the Rockets for the third best record in franchise
history over the course of the first 45 games of a season with the 1985-86 team (96-97 team went 32-13 and the 93-94 team went 34-11). All
three previous teams to win 31 games or more in the first 45 went on to the Western Conference Finals or further, with the 93-94 team winning
Houston’s first championship. The 45 game start comes on the heels of a historic first six games. After a 98-81 win vs. SAS on 11/6 the
Rockets won each of their first six contests by 10 points or more. This marked the first time the Rockets have opened a season with six straight
double digit wins. The Rockets have three previous 6-0 starts in franchise history, the last two resulted in an NBA title season and the third
ended in a Conference Finals appearance. Also, the Rockets joined only the 1985-86 Denver Nuggets as the two teams in NBA history to win
their first six games by 10+ points or more.

Historic Home win: In the home win vs. POR on 12/22, the Rockets recorded 73 points in the first half, this marked Houston’s season-high for
points in any half and ties the most points the team has scored in a half since scoring 77 points in the first half vs. GSW on 2/5/13. Additionally,
Jason Terry made a three-point field goal late in the third quarter, pushing his career total for 3PT FGM to 2,000. He is only the third player in
NBA history (Reggie Miller and Ray Allen) to reach 2,000 career 3PT FGM. James Harden totaled 44 points, 7 asssists and 5 steals in the
game. Per NBA Stats, Harden joined Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Paul Westphal and Rick Barry as only players to post 40+ points, 5+
assists and 5+ steals in a game in less than 35 minutes of play (Harden did it in just 31 minutes). Harden is also only the third Rocket ever to
reach those plateaus (Olajuwon and Drexler) and Harden has done it twice.

Milestone Moments: In the win vs. DEN on 12/13 Dwight Howard returned to the floor to score 26 points and collect 13 rebounds.
Additionally, with 13 rebounds on the night he surpassed the 10,000 rebound mark for his career and became the third youngest player to do
so behind only Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. Then with 3 blocks vs. NOP on 12/18, Howard had recorded 1,691 blocks in his career
moving him to 25th on the all-time career block list in the NBA, passing coach Kevin McHale (1,690). On 12/22 vs. POR, Jason Terry made a
three-pointer late in the 3Q to mark his 2,000 career made 3PT FG, joining Ray Allen and Reggie Miller as the only three players to make 2,000
career threes.

Lift Off: The Rockets took off to a 6-0 start for the first time since the 1996-97 season, a season that ultimately resulted in a Western
Conference Finals appearance. The Rockets start though, by margin of victory, ranked among the greatest in franchise history. The Rockets
won their first six games by a +88 margin. This is the largest combined margin over the first six games in franchise history (2nd: 1978-79
Rockets, +78).

games and work as an executive until May 11, 1995, when he
succeeded Jack McCloskey as Vice President of Basketball
Operations. In this role, McHale was credited for hiring Saunders as
head coach and made the decision to draft high school phenom
Kevin Garnett with the fifth-overall pick of the 1995 NBA Draft.
Overall, all eight playoff appearances by Minnesota and all four 50win squads in team history came while he was overseeing team
personnel.
His biggest transaction came on July 31, 2007, when
McHale acquired an up-and-coming Al Jefferson from Boston in a
trade that sent Garnett to the Celtics. McHale and his staff also
signed Jefferson to a multi-year deal to remain with Minnesota. The
next big splash came on June 26, 2008, when McHale orchestrated
a draft-night deal that netted the Timberwolves a talented big man in
forward Kevin Love and veteran sharpshooter Mike Miller from the
Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for the draft rights to O.J. Mayo.
Through deals with Boston, Miami, Philadelphia and Houston,
McHale also acquired a number of future draft picks, including three
additional first-round selections and another three second-round
picks.
Prior to his NBA front office career, McHale displayed a
history of success in the game of basketball. On Oct. 1, 1999,
McHale was recognized for his achievements on the court with
induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. On
July 8, 2000, he was inducted into the National High School Sports
Hall of Fame. During the 1997 NBA All-Star Game, he was honored
as one of the NBA’s Top-50 Players for the league’s first halfcentury. To coincide with the University of Minnesota’s 100th
Anniversary, he was selected as top player in the history of
Minnesota men’s basketball on Feb. 18, 1995. McHale’s #32 jersey
was retired by the Boston Celtics on Jan. 30, 1994. In 1992, McHale
was elected to the Minnesota State High School League Hall of
Fame.
McHale played 13 seasons for Boston before retiring in the
spring of 1993. A seven-time NBA All-Star (1984, 1986, 1987, 1988,
1989, 1990 and 1991), McHale helped lead the Celtics to three NBA
championships (1981, 1984 and 1986), five Eastern Conference
titles and eight Atlantic Division crowns. He was voted the NBA’s
Sixth Man of the Year twice (1984 and 1985) and was selected to the
All-NBA First Team in 1987. He was also named to the NBA AllDefensive First Team three times (1986, 1987 and 1988) and the
Second Team on another three occasions (1983, 1989 and 1990).
Overall, the 6-10 forward/center averaged 17.9 points and 7.3
rebounds in 971 career regular season games. In 169 playoff
contests, McHale increased his averages to 18.8 points and 7.4
rebounds. A first-round selection (third overall) by the Celtics in the
1980 NBA Draft, McHale went on to earn First-Team NBA All-Rookie
accolades in 1981.
As a collegian, McHale posted career averages of 15.2
points and 8.5 rebounds per game in four seasons at Minnesota,
earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 1979 and 1980. In high
school, McHale was named Minnesota Mr. Basketball of 1976 and
led his squad to a runner-up finish in the Minnesota Class AA State
Basketball Championship Game.
McHale and his wife, Lynn, have five children, Kristyn,
Michael, Joseph, Thomas and the late Sasha (10/27/89-11/24/12).

2013-14: In 2013-14, McHale took Rockets to their second
consecutive playoff berth, finishing with a mark of 54-28 (.659) in his
third season at the helm. This marked the fifth best season in
franchise history by winning percentage. Overall, the Rockets ranked
second in the NBA in points per game (107.7) and third in the NBA in
blocked shots per game on the defensive end (5.6). After setting the
NBA record for three point field goals made in 2012-13 (867 three
point field goals), Houston again led the entire NBA in three point
field goals per game (9.5).
Career: Kevin McHale was named the 12th head coach in Rockets
history on June 1, 2011, joining Houston after spending the prior two
seasons as an analyst for NBA TV and Turner Sports. McHale’s time
in the NBA spans over three decades as a player, executive, coach
and television commentator. He currently stands as one of six
members from Boston’s 1985-86 championship team to serve as an
NBA head coach (Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, Dennis Johnson, Sam
Vincent and Rick Carlisle). Overall, McHale owns a record of 172152 (.531) in five seasons as head coach of the Minnesota
Timberwolves (39-55) and Houston Rockets (133-97). In his each of
McHale’s three campaigns with the Houston Rockets, he has made
significant leaps in both total wins and winning percentage. After
finishing the lockout shortened 2011-12 season 34-32 (.515),
McHale led the team to a 45-37 (.549) in his second season. After a
54-28 (.659) season in 2013-14, the Rockets have witnessed win
improvements of 11 wins and nine wins in each new season under
McHale.
McHale previously recorded a 39-55 (.415) mark in two
stints as head coach of Minnesota. He became the sixth head coach
in Timberwolves annals on Feb. 12, 2005, taking over after Flip
Saunders was relieved of his coaching duties. He compiled a 19-12
record over the remainder of the 2004-05 season. On Dec. 8, 2008,
McHale stepped down as Vice President of Basketball Operations
and transitioned into his second stint as head coach of the
Timberwolves by taking over for Randy Wittman. Beginning with a
victory at New York (12/26/08), McHale helped the Timberwolves
rebound with a 12-4 mark over their next 16 outings, which included
a five-game winning streak (1/2/09-1/10/09). McHale was also
named Western Conference Coach of the Month for Jan. 2009 after
guiding the Timberwolves to a 10-4 mark during that month.
Upon his retirement as an NBA player, McHale joined the
Timberwolves as a television analyst and special assistant. On Aug.
18, 1994, Timberwolves Owner Glen Taylor promoted him to
Assistant General Manager. He continued to broadcast Minnesota
