Sunday Bulletin - St Pius X School

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time - February 1, 2015
Dear Parishioners,
There is one thing most certainly on everyone’s mind in the North West this weekend; the Super Bowl!
It is great to see the Seahawks in their second consecutive appearance and win or lose, it’s sure to be a
great game. In the midst of all of the media hype this past week leading up to this weekend’s big game
was the media focus on Russell Wilson and his transparency with his Christian Faith. We remember last
week’s thrilling NFC championship game in which the Seahawks won the game in miraculous fashion
during the final minutes and in the first two plays in overtime.
The first thing that Russell Wilson did was find his group of prayer warriors, kneel down in the middle of the field with them, and
proceed to pray before millions of people. Following this period of prayer, during the interviews, Russell was asked, “What was
the key to your success today?” His response was simple; “Faith. I believe that God prepared me, prepared this team, for situations like this.” What an inspirational witness and role model this great athlete is for Christians of all denominations: someone
who uses his prestige, visibility and position to simply and humbly point to God, to acknowledge Him as the source of all blessings.
I have a feeling that Russell and his group of prayer warriors would have done the very same thing if the outcome of the game had
been different. Russell’s example should give each of us an opportunity for reflection.
As baptized Catholic Christians, how are we, in a public way and through the work and positions that we hold, giving testimony to
our own Catholic Faith? We don’t necessarily have to wear a Pope Francis t-shirt or hang a visible two foot crucifix around our
necks, but each of us is called through our baptisms to be a credible witness of our Catholic Faith. Do our friends, acquaintances,
colleagues, and co-workers know that we are Catholic Christians? We certainly live in a predominantly non-Christian environment
and it could be extremely easy for us to sink into it and pass through unnoticed. Perhaps we should pray to the Holy Spirit to give
us an extra bit of courage in order to push back against the environment around us? St. John Paul II once said “Do not be afraid to
be saints!” Let’s not be afraid to be the visible and courageous saints our world needs today.
Queridos Parroquianos,
El ‘Super Bowl’ este fin de semana sin dudas, esta en la mente de todos de nosotros porque los Seahawks están jugando otra vez.
¿Ganaremos? Vamos a ver.
In Christ / En Christo,
Fr. Cal Christiansen

Rachel’s Corner
Hope and Healing After Abortion
In the Gospel today we read that because
Jesus spoke with authority, his reputation spread
throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. As his disciples,
we can also speak with authority when we put our faith into
action by helping the poor and suffering.
Hope is the light at the end of the tunnel, beckoning you to
accept the invitation, to say “yes” to the urge to believe in a
loving God who wants you to be healed and whole again.
Come on a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat™ and find healing and
wholeness. March 6-8, 2015. For information, call Valerie at

You are loved with an everlasting love!
Through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (St. Pius
Conference) was able to provide Thanksgiving baskets to 20
families (50 adults and 51 children), and Christmas baskets to
43 families (89 adults and 105 children)
May God Bless You!

Catholic Schools Week:
This year students enjoyed a full week of fun activities and
treats to celebrate our Catholic schools.
Math Night was one of the more popular events of the year as
students and their parents learn different math games and activities related to math. On Sports Day, the 8th grade challenged
the teachers to a championship volleyball game. Teachers
brought their secret weapon, Fr. Christiansen! They had high
hopes to win but the 8th graders beat ‘em fair and square!
Along with all the academic activities this week, different classes worked together and played board games, completed art
projects, practiced Readers Theater, worked on science experiments and Religion trivia games. It was a great way to celebrate Catholic Schools Week … a very special week, indeed!
The Presentation of The Lord
Later this week we celebrate the Presentation of the Lord.
This is a feast that happens every year on February 2nd.
We read about the presentation of the Lord in Luke 2, but
the text can be a little mysterious.
What is actually happening there?
Some claim that Luke himself didn't know . . .
Here is what Luke actually says about the event :
[22] And when the time came for their purification
according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to
Jerusalem to present him to the Lord [23] (as it is written
in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb
shall be called holy to the Lord") [24] and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "a
pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."
He then records the encounters with Simeon and Anna
the prophetess, but at the moment our focus is what Luke
refers to as "their purification."
What is he talking about?

“It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness;
He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies
you; He is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is
He who provoked you with that thirst for fullness that
will not let you settle for compromise; it is He who urges
you to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in
your heart your most genuine choices, the choices that
others try to stifle.
It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something
great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the
world more human and more fraternal.”
Saint Pope John Paul II, 1920 - 2005
