TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The Oil of the Sick, usually labeled OI (for Oleum
Infirmarum), is often reserved with chrism and the oil of
catechumens in an ambry. An ambry is a cabinet, often
beautifully ornamented and kept near the baptistery in the
church. Olive oil, with no fragrance added, is blessed at
the Chrism Mass in Holy Week by the bishop, although
there is now a provision for a priest to bless oil if none is
available. This restores to our Latin Rite practice a tradition never lost in the Eastern tradition, in which priests
consecrate the oil of the sick, even at the sick person's
home. Any vegetable oil may be used now, since olive oil
is difficult to obtain in some places. Many priests keep a
small supply of oil close at hand in a small metal tube
called a "stock."
In the former rite, every sense of the body was
anointed, accompanied by a prayer for forgiveness of sin.
So, the eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, hands, and feet were
all touched. Today, this is simplified to an anointing of
the forehead and the hands, but generally today the oil is
used more lavishly, and the symbolism of touch so central to the rite is enhanced. Often, a priest will invite everyone present to join in the "laying on of hands." Sick
persons are often pushed aside or feared in our culture,
and to be reverently touched in love can be a profound
experience of God's healing, forgiving, accepting presence through the ministry of the Church.

tiempo. No importa si quemamos aceite, cera 0 electricidad. Lo que importa es velar en oraci6n.

Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
-James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
In Jesus' day, demonic possession was not uncommon. Mark presents Jesus as one who takes on the
evil spirits, overturning their possession of this man. Jesus has declared war against the kingdom of Satan. Its
hour of ascendancy is coming to an end.
The unclean spirit recognizes Jesus as one with
greater power, for it asks, "Have you come to destroy
us?" Then it confesses Jesus as the "Holy One of
God" (Mark 1:24). Jesus will battle the forces of evil to
the death, his death. But what looks like defeat for Jesus
will be changed to victory, because the power of God is
at work in him.
In the first reading from Deuteronomy, Moses is
speaking to the people before they enter the Promised
Land. The entire book is his farewell speech to them. He
will not go with them. He consoles them, saying that God
promises to raise up a prophet like Moses and will speak
through him: "I
will put my words into his
mouth" (Deuteronomy 18:18).
Jesus is presented to us today as the prophet like
Moses, who teaches with the authority of God and whose
words are obeyed even by unclean spirits. There is no
power on earth or beyond it greater than the power of
God at work in him.

Vivamos La Palabra de Dios
En todas las Misas rezamos el Padrenuestro, que concluye asi: "No nos dejes caer en la tentaci6n y libranos del

que el mal no encuentre lugar en nosotros, ni en nuestra

Living God's Word
We pray at every Mass the Lord's Prayer, which concludes: "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil." The power of evil has been overcome by Jesus' saving death, but we continue to pray that it does not
find a home in us, in our Church, or in our society.

Inspiring a deeper understanding of true giving
February 2015
o what is your life committed? For a multitude ofpeo-
T
pie today it could be summed up in one word: money.
People are bowing before the god, mammon. We do this
even though we know we can't take it with us.
Chuck Swindoll in his book Strengthening Your Grip, gives a delightful illustration of the truth. He tells about
a friend of his who was in need of a
dark suit to wear to a funeral. He had
very little money, so he went to the local thrift shop in search of a bargain.
Much to his amazement, they had a
solid black suit that fit him exactly ...
at a very reasonable price. As he paid
for the suit, he inquired how they could
possibly sell such nice suits so cheaply.
The thrift shop manager smiled and
said that the suits had once been owned
by the local mortuary. They had used
them on deceased people for funerals,
then removed them before the burial.
The man felt a little uncomfortable wearing a suit that had been on
a corpse, but since no one else would
know, and he really did need a suit badly, why not? Everything went fine until
he casually started to put his hands in
the pockets of his new suit. It was then
that he discovered that his pants had
no pockets! And the truth came home
to him. Why would a dead man need
pockets? We leave it all behind.
To what or to whom is your life committed? We have been called to be com-
mitted to something that is eternal, that
is ennobling, that is earth-shaking. How
about a commitment to the stewardship
way of life? The person who takes this
step will find other commitments flowing naturally into his or her life. That
person will want to give generously of
his or her time in Christian service. He
or she will look upon the giving of material substance as a privilege.
The question of how much time
should be given to Christian service
s we live from day
to day, we are
investing our time and
talents in various things.
Whatever we are doing
had better be important.
It costs us a day of our
lives. As Christian stew-

must be offered concerning the amount
or percentage of one's money that
should be given for the Lord's work.
But the basic step is taken when commitment to the stewardship way of
life is made. This means receptivity,
open-mindedness, earnestness, and a
desire to serve. With such an attitude,
the Christian can grow in grace as the
means of grace are offered.

challenging
issue
modem
Christians face is our financial obligation to the work of
God's church. How much is enough?
How much can we afford? How much
do we want to give? What about tithing? Can we do that?
Abraham's descendants gave their
first fruits ... their best ... to God. They

our pocketbooks. But

gave one-tenth (10%) right off the top.
They honored God first. Iwant to honor
and thank God for all the blessings bestowed upon me. But does God expect
the same of me as of them? The answer
will differ for each of us. I know that
God wants me to give willingly, with
an open heart. Ihave no grain, lambs or
bulls to offer. I have limited resources
as a single, working, semi-senior citizen. What can I do?
I can support church activities near
and dear to my heart. I can share my
talents and resources helping others
meet their challenges. I can look upon
tithing as a goal, contributing a little
more to the church each year. I may
not make 10% this year or next year, or
maybe never, but a goal is something
for which to strive.
How can we show God that we are
truly thankful for His gifts to us? Think
about it.

Juggling
ave you ever seen a juggler?
They're fun to watch. My
husband has been juggling for
several years. Learning how wasn't
easy. At first he practiced with rolled
up socks or bean bags instead of balls
because they don't roll away when
they're dropped. But after many hours
of practice, he's become good enough
to talk as he juggles. He doesn't drop
things if he's distracted, either.
Jugglers generally start learning this
skill by tossing one bean bag from hand
to hand. They go on from there to two,
and then three bean bags.
In a way, stewardship is like juggling. Some people think that giving
time, talent, and treasure is too difficult. They may know of others in their
church who do, but think, "Oh, they're
so organized and generous and talented. I'm not like that, so I can't help as
much."
It's true that some people are good
at giving, just as some people are naturally well-coordinated. They start out
with an advantage when they begin to
practice stewardship or learn to juggle.
But giving is a skill that can be developed, just like juggling. It's up to us to
become the best givers we can be. <::x
H
amSteward over my life. My purpose is to use God's gifts of time,
talent, and treasure that others can
come to know God through my life. In
other words, I live my religion.
l
I am Steward to my family, my relatives, my neighbors and my fellow
human everywhere. I give them my
love and share my life and bounty with
them.
A
steward is defined
as: An administrator
or supervisor; a manager. As people of faith,
we manage what God
has given us. We are
accountable to God for
how we use his gifts. We
have both an individual
and community obligation as stewards. We
need to personally decide how to develop and
commit the abilities and
possessions we have.
We must also respond to
our faith community, the
church, which provides
us with opportunities to
heighten the effect of our
stewardship.
I am Steward to my church. I give it
my time, my best thought and talents.
I support it financially. I extend to all
the warmth of my love of God, whether
members, or strangers. I pray that my
church can be the conscience of the
community, encouraging brotherhood,
curbing inhumanity.
I am Steward to my community and
any of the agencies that serve it. I serve
to ensure that the authority it wields is
inspired by God.
I am Steward over my corner of
God's Earth. I seek to preserve its productivity and beauty for this and future
generations.
First and last, I am a steward. I am
dedicated to a life of service to both
God and humankind, for all of my
days, in everything I do or say. And I
thank God that this is my lot and portion. <::x

As people of faith, we manage what God has given
us. We are accountable to God for how we use the
gifts we have received.

To what is your life ...
Something tragic goes on in the lives
of most of us. It is failure to fulfill life's
greatest possibilities. And something
grand and glorious could be happening
day by day. It would be the joining of
life to high Christian purposes, which
enrich both those who serve and those
who are blessed with the service rendered.
Real religious faith has to do with
all of life and not with just a fragment
of it. Christianity is more than a creed
to be embraced ... it is a way of life to
be lived. And the living of that life;
the awakening of a person to a world
beyond the world of sense; response
of his or her mind and his or her spirit
to God; this is a part of what we call a
person's stewardship ... a person's best
way to fulfillment. ex

Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith.
February 201 5

Rev. Fernando Gonzalez, Pastor
Self-denial is not [ust for Lent
St. Peter Damian
away to school where he
trained to become a professor.
Peter practiced strict
penances and spent many
hours in prayer. Soon he left
teaching to became a
Benedictine. Pope Stephen IX
made Peter cardinal of Ostia
and he instituted reforms and
ended many abusive practices
in the Church. He wrote
extensively and was declared a
Doctor of the Church.
Mass for Lent
Consider increasing your
Mass attendance from once in
a while to every Sunday, or
from every Sunday to several
days a week. Trade an hour of
television each day for an hour
of prayer. The extra grace will
see you through the season of
Lent.
"You will show me the
path to life, abounding
joy in your presence,
the delights at your
right hand forever"
Psalm 16:11.

Society tells us that we are entitled to
whatever we want whenever we want it.
YetJesus said, "If any man would come
after me, let him deny himself and take up
his cross and follow me"
(Matthew 16:24). The
ability to say "no" to
ourselves is critical for
achieving goals and
overcoming
temptations.
Self-denial starts
with deliberate
choices. To live a
disciplined life key to reaching
any important
goal- means
choosing to be
ruled by deliberate choices rather
than by emotions, bad habits, or the
influence of others. Practicing
self-denial prepares us for the lean times
in life that are outside of our control.
Learn what tempts you. Make a list of
that which you have most difficulty
regulating. For example, you may find
food, using bad language, and gossip
to be your biggest temptations.
Research your triggers. Do
you indulge when you are
tired? Insecure? Around
bad company? Read
books or articles about
the areas that present
difficulty. Becoming
informed helps
you make the
right decision
when you are
tempted to
make the wrong
choice. Make an
action plan.
Distract yourself. When you feel the
urge to lose self-control, pull out your
Rosary, go for a walk, drink a glass of
water. This will derail the train of
thought and give you time to regain
your self-discipline.

Do That
After his resurrection, Jesus
sent his Apostles on a universal
mission: "'Go therefore, and
make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them ... and
teaching them to observe all
that I have commanded you"
(Matthew 28:19-20).
The Apostles left bishops
as their successors to
continue teaching the
faith. The pope and the
bishops form the
Magisterium, the
teaching authority of the
Church. The Magisterium,
guided by the Holy Spirit,
protects Church teaching
from serious mistakes and
teaches us how to live our faith.

Intercessory prayer - a double blessing
When we pray for others, we offer powerful help for
someone in need. It's the best action we can take for
others. Intercessory prayer is also a gift for the one
who prays.

Lent begins February 18th, and
commemorates the Passion of Our
Lord. One observance is to pray before
the Stations of the Cross in church and
meditate on Jesus' journey to Calvary.
February 14 - St. Cyril (869). Along
with his brother St. Methodius, St.
Cyril was a missionary, teacher, and
patron of the Slavic people. He
invented an alphabet still used in
some Eastern liturgies, and preached
the Gospel in an easily understood
manner. He died in Rome after taking
the monastic habit.
February 21 - St. Peter Damian
(1072). Childhood deprivation may
have created a desire for an austere
life. St. Peter Damian became a
devoted and disciplined monk but
was called to service as a bishop and
served as advisor to seven popes. He
retired to monastic life and died in
the care of his brother monks.
February 22 - St. Peter's Chair.

Why do we say,
"God is love?"
Love is an exchange between persons.
In Scripture - God's inspired word God's love for us is
compared to the love
between family members:
a father for his son, a
mother for her children,
a husband for his wife.
We say "Cod is love" (1
John 4:8), because he
himself is an eternal
exchange oflove (CCC 221).
Throughout the Old Testament, God
continually showed his people, Israel,
proofs of this love. He never stopped
saving them, forgiving them, and
providing for them. God does the same
for us today.
For God so loved the world that he
gave his only Son, so that everyone
who believes in him might not perish
but have eternal life (John 3:16). Jesus
showed us the Father's love in words
and deeds. He taught us to call God,
"Our Father," forgave people's sins,
healed their sickness, and fed them.
Christ expressed this love perfectly on
the Cross. "No one has greater love than
this, to lay down one's life for one's friends"
(John 14:13).
