RESEARCH INTERESTS
I am a plant molecular biologist with experience in tissue culture. My education (PhD in
Biology and MSc in Plant Biotechnology) and international research experience have provided me
a broad understanding of plant cellular, molecular and evolutionary biology. This covers genetic,
epigenetic, transcriptional and biochemical studies on developmental biology and (epi)genetic
variation, frequently with the applied aim of improving plant cultures. My recent researches deal
with molecular studies of developmental stages and search of functional markers of stress
resistance, frequently from an evolutionary approach. My main goal from here onwards is to use all
that knowledge to go more deeply into eco-evo-devo mechanisms, and, if possible, to use the
arising information for applied purposes. I am sure that my background not only will be adaptable
to the objectives of your institution, but also will provide additional approaches.
Since the period of my PhD very often in my career I had to spend time setting up different
methodologies from the beginning of the researches, always with success to be used for
experimentation or analysis. For example, in my initial researches in plant biology at the Plant
Biotechnology Institute of Santa Clara (Cuba) –developed as a grant holder from the Spanish
International Cooperation Agency– I had to deal with unknown factors affecting propagation and
quality of plant field and in vitro cultures. During several years, always under fundamental and
practical approaches, I studied distinct molecular profiles –metabolites, released proteins,
isozymes- in different plant developmental processes to find biochemical indicators and
characterizations of morphogenetic capacities and physiological stages, and to establish
associations with variant genomic (AFLPs, functional markers) and epigenomic (MSAPs) molecular
markers. In this way, at the University of Oviedo (Spain) we found an inverse relationship between
pine genetic potential for somatic embryogenesis and both global genomic methylation and
polyamine contents. Nevertheless, these and other molecular associations were found to do not
exist regarding the typical loss of embryogenic ability with ageing of the cultures of several pine
genotypes, in a study in which I took actively part at Canadian Forest Service-Québec under the
supervision of Dr. Krystina Klimaszewska. Subsequently, I went into detail analysing more
treatments with respect to genome methylation changes, especially at INRA-Orléans (France), but
results are still being processed. Those studies on genome methylation regarded percentage of
methyalted cytosines and methylation patterns.
I also participated in the development and validation of a plantain micropropagation method
in a European Union research project for International Cooperation, which main researcher was
Prof. Pierre Debergh, from the University of Gent. In addition to biotechnological work, my role
there consisted mainly in the molecular assessment of field regenerants, performing karyotypic,
genomic and epigenomic analyses to follow culture-induced morphological somaclonal variation.
We found an AFPL marker associated to dwarfism. In that time I also cooperated in the molecular
characterization of artificial banana/plantain hybrid lines.
From recently I worked at the University of Évora (Portugal), under the supervision of Profs.
Birgit Arnholdt-Schmitt and Augusto Peixe. Here I continued working on my interests around
epigenetics, thus starting a research on developmental and evolutionary involvement of the
changing structures of the genome. From this perspective I studied, for example, variations in
number of DNA repeats under distinct culture conditions and in different plant tissues and
individuals. Keeping an eye on evolutionary approaches, I also have searched for functional
markers of plant stress resistance, so important in fitness and consequently highly linked to the
evolution, especially of reproductive systems. My current work consists in the study of the
differential regulation of gene expression (by RT-qPCR) during morphogenetic processes in plants
with different potential for adaption, with an emphasis in the alternative oxidase function and
genes, which are involved in physiological adaptations to biotic and abiotic stresses.
Currently I´m a Prometeo (Senescyt, Ecuador) researcher on molecular basis of somatic
embryogenesis of banana and coffee tree.
During all those researches I have acquired expertise in the use of bioinformatic platforms
and tools to analyse nucleic acid and protein sequences, having also a basis in biostatistics. In
spite my research work was mainly performed under a plant-biotechnology basis, I have also
worked in physiology and pathology of fishes and mammals. Furthermore, my formation in
sciences is not reduced to Biology, since I studied several university courses on Physics and,
furthermore, I taught sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) at high school and
university levels.
The above mentioned stances abroad, so as international meetings and writing of
scientific papers have provided me a good level of spoken and written English, so as a basic level
of Portuguese and French, being Spanish my mother language. My communication skills have
increased with activities such as national and overseas pre-graduate and postdoctoral researcher
training and supervision, and management of projects. It is also worth to say here that I obtained
the Pedagogical Attitude Certificate awarded by the Spanish Institute of Educational Sciences.
I am highly interested in put in practise my knowledge and skills and co-operate in the
emergent development of science in Ecuador, hereby contributing to the social welfare which is
expected from the current politics. Summarizing, initiatives for working in universities or research
centres of Ecuador, like contracts or the Prometeo project, perfectly suits my professional and
personal interests, and I would fill very comfortable in the work.
