LASALETTE REFLECTION ON THE SUNDAY READINGS
SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 18TH
Curiosity (1 Samuel 3:3-19; 1 Corinthians 6:13-20; John 1:35-42)
There are many people (including myself) who will spend long hours trying to find answers to
ques ons, some mes even quite trivial ones. Such is the force of curiosity. Curiosity is a good
thing. Samuel’s words, “Speak, for your servant is listening,” are the same as asking, “Why
have you called me?” John’s disciple Andrew, curious as to why Jesus was called “the Lamb of
God,” began by asking him, “Where are you staying?” There is, of course, such a thing as idle
curiosity. La Sale e, like all appari ons, has always a racted the curious. In the beginning it
was, “What did the Lady really say?” Then it became, “What did she say about such-and such?”—ranging
from the poli cal situa on to apocalyp c prophecies. Then there were the words spoken privately to each
of the children, o en referred to as the “secrets of La Sale e.” Occasionally, people even want to know
about Maximin’s dog (Loulou, if you are interested). It is interes ng, but not essen al, to know things about
Maximin and Mélanie, their families, their personal response to the Appari on, their life story. What
ma ers most about them, however, is the fact that they were found to be “neither deceived nor
deceiving,” and so their tes mony could be considered reliable. In the Appari on itself, nothing is
superfluous. We can profitably ask many ques ons so as be er to understand the meaning of Our Lady’s
discourse, as well as of the many symbols (crucifix, light, tears, roses, hammer & pincers, etc.) But the most
important ques on we need to ask of the Beau ful Lady is, “What do you want of us?” as if we were
saying, “Speak, for your servants are listening. We really want to know.” The ini al answer is: “Respect my
Son’s name, pray every night and every morning, etc.” S ll, curiosity has a way of never being sa sfied.
Other ques ons arise. We can keep on asking, “What else? How be er?” A er all, the disciples surely
didn’t stop at “Where are you staying?” Disciples are, by defini on, learners. Spiritual curiosity has a way of
going deeper and deeper.

Reflexion….
La Curiosidad
(1 Samuel 3:3-19; 1 Corintios 6:13-20; Juan 1:35-42)
Segundo domingo del tiempo
ordinario
Paz y Gozo
Los invita a compartir con ellos
