Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
We are entering the second weekend of Ordinary Time (liturgical celebration) after the Christmas
Season. We thank you for assisting the liturgical committee from each parish to take down all the
Christmas decorations after the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. Our regional Churches were beautifully decorated during the Christmas Season and now we are in the Ordinary Time as we prepare for
the Ash Wednesday liturgical celebration, which is the commencement of the Lenten Season.
We had an informative meeting with the parish staff last week. We thank St. John of the Woods’
Church for hosting this regional staff annual meeting. I had the opportunity to thank the parish staff
for their ministry within our regional parishes. We are ready for this year with many different projects and training workshops that we will participate in. We also met with the parish leadership for this month to review the financial statement from the last few months. We thank you for making your commitment to support our parish stewardship commitment for this year. The Stewardship Committee has provided a report on the parish bulletin from each parish. We encourage you to
make your commitment to assist your parish on what you are able to do. We need your support in balancing the budget that we had
planned for this fiscal year. We are in the seventh month of this budget and now is the time for the Financial Council to gather information to prepare for the coming year’s budget. They need to have information from different ministries in our parish to plan for
next year’s budget. As parishioners, you may want to know the status of your home parish in order for you to know how to support
it, so I have asked the Financial Council to prepare a short report for you with the information that you may want to know.
We had an informative meeting with the Liturgical Committee to plan for the liturgical celebrations from the Ordinary Time to the
Easter Season. We also have scheduled the date for the liturgical ministers’ retreat for the Lenten Season (this year). We are very
blessed to have Andrew Casad from the Archdiocese Liturgy Office, who will lead this retreat day for us. There will be more information about this event.
We met with the Parish Long Range Plan core team from each parish to review the implementations on the parish plan. We thank
the core team for assisting us to focus on the issue and concern, so we are able to follow the goal in the area that we want to implement for each parish. It is good news for us to share with you on the area and projects we have been able to complete in accordance
with our five years’ plan. The programs and projects that we wanted to accomplish, we were able to complete them with the support
of our parish volunteers. However, some projects require us to hire professionals to do them and this requires having sufficient financial support to pay for them. The problem is when we do not have sufficient financial support; we are not able to move forward
with these projects. We thank you for your continue support and we hope that the projects that we have completed in accordance
with what was planned, that you are satisfied with them.
We are very pleased to welcome four missionary workers to Sacred Heart’s Church for their ministry to assist us with the Latino
community. Please welcome them and support them on what you can do to make them feel at home. I am very impressed with
these young men who have made their commitment to serve the Church for a year or two as missionary workers with little pay; and
all we need to do is to feed them, cloth them, and provide them with accommodations, as they do not receive payment (monetary)
for their ministry. I thank the committee members that we had formed to support them at Sacred Heart’s Church. We also thank the
priest who is helping us while Father Juan Carlos is away for his vacation. We have Baptism, Quinceañera, Wedding, and Funeral
celebrations along with daily and weekend Masses.
We thank the catechists, teachers, teacher’s aides, and volunteers who assist us with this New Year’s Faith Formation program. We
are very happy to welcome the students back to the CCD program; and we congratulate the catechumens and candidates (RCIA) for
receiving the Rite of Accepting into the program. We welcome you to the adult education program that we have on Wednesday
night. We also thank you for coming back to the Bible study group at St. John of the Woods’ Church. We started the Confirmation
class and we thank the core team members who assist us this year.
We need your assistance during the winter time when you come to the Church or you are using our Church’s facility. Please keep
the doors closed to keep the heat in the building and only turn the lights and heating on when you need it and also to please turn
them off once you have finished with your group’s activities or meetings. You know how expensive the utilities bills are when you
pay them for your own home, but this is more expensive for what we have to pay for the Church’s utilities’ bills during the winter.
So, please assist us to be a good steward of the resource that we have, so we can continue to serve each other well.
We congratulated those couples that received the Sacrament of Matrimony and those babies who were baptized last week. We also
thank the homebound minister who took time to visit those who are home bound and bringing them the Body of Christ. We also
ask you to pray for those families who have experienced the loss of their loved ones. It is hard for them and we thank you for your
prayers for them.
May the Lord continue to bless upon you and your families! Thank you for your continue support to our parish life.
Sincerely, Yours in Christ,

Many things contribute to the status of the Altar and Sanctuary
area of Catholic Churches. Customs, ethnic values, time of year,
locale of the Church and so on. In a given city, each Church may
be different regarding the environment of the altar and sanctuary.
The question then: does the Church have regulations that govern
or options that contribute to the varices? Here are some of the
instructions from the GIRM (The General Instruction in the Roman Missal). 1. The altar is to be covered with at least one white
cloth. 2. Regarding candles: At least two candlesticks with
lighted candles should be on or next to the altar. Sometimes four
or six may be used especially for a Sunday Mass or holy day of
obligation. Note: when the diocesan bishop celebrates then
seven candles may be used (#117) Prior to 1970 when the altar
did not face the people, the altar usually had six candles and a
cross on it. Because of the influence of Pope Benedict, in some
Churches you will see a reappearance of a small cross on the
altar. 3. According to the GIRM: “ floral decorations should
always show moderation and be arranged around the altar rather
than on the altar table.” (#305) The Pastor, using the GIRM as
his guide, should have the final say regarding the altar table and
its surroundings. There is a liturgical ministry devoted to the
“Environment of the Church.”

Prayer of the Faithful ~ January 18th, 2015
For the success of the March for Life: that this powerful event
may open hearts, minds, souls to the fullness of the Gospel of
Life in our lives and laws; we pray to the Lord:Respect
LifeCome out with your family and friends this Tuesday, January 20th to the Mass for Life - 9:30 AM, Marcus Pavilion at St.
Martin's University in Lacey with Archbishop Sartain, and then
to the March for Life - Noon at the State Capitol in Olympia. We remember the deaths of more than 57 million unborn
babies since the 1973 Supreme Court decisions legalized abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy. You all are
needed in Olympia! Your presence and prayers will help show
elected officials and the public the depth of support for pro-life
legislation that protects women and unborn babies.
Year of Consecrated Life
October 1, 2014 (www.usccb.org)
Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a Year of
Consecrated Life, starting on the First Sunday of Advent, the
weekend of November 29, 2014, and ending on February 2, 2016,
the World Day of Consecrated life. The year also marks the 50th
anniversary of Perfectae Caritatis, a decree on religious life, and
Lumen Gentium, the Second Vatican Council’s constitution on
the Church. Its purpose, as stated by the Vatican is to “make a
grateful remembrance of the recent past” while embracing “the
future with hope.”

THIS YEAR
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a
history of over 100 years . . . , in which Christians around the world have taken part in an

one." (cf. John 17:21)
In January we will send out year-end statements of
giving to parish families. We are required by law to
mail them no later than January 31. The regional parish office will
make report available for all parishioners. If you have not received it
please call the office at your convenience. Thank you.

Stewardship Corner
Last weeks bulletin I said was closing out the year of 2014. Well
not yet, I have another “thank you” to mention to you!
On December 15,2014 St John of the Woods parish hosted the
Christmas party for Ministry leaders of St. Ann’s Parish, Sacred
Heart Parish and St. Jon of the Woods Parish. Gaye Dolan, Karen
Knobbe and their helpers planned a very nice party. St John’s provided, turkey, ham and beverages, while using the alphabet some
people were requested to bring side dishes, salads, and desserts.
There were about 100 people who attended from the three parishes. It was a wonderful turn–out of people. After the wonderful
food, enjoyed by all, Fr. Tuan suggested that we all join together
and sing Christmas carols. We broke up into three parishes and had
a competition. St. Ann’s was first, Sacred Heart was second and St.
John’s was last. Nancy Burkholder played the piano St. John’s and
we had more voices and we won the competition.
We wish to thank al who participated in a very heart-warming
event and also to all those who brought foo to share. We would
also like to thank those who helped with the clean up. There were
so many helpers that I don’t have enough room to list them all.
There is one more ‘thank you’ and that is to Pat Kawalchuk
who decorated the tables with beautiful Christmas floral arrangements that lasted throughout the holidays—Thanks you Pat!

What’s New? St. John’s Meditation Garden
We have organized a committee to plan a meditation garden for St. John’s. We have had 2 meetings to begin
planning. This project would be constructed in phases, the first
being the installation of a large Cross that one of our parishioners is donating and building. There have been several different
plans to install this cross and that is still in the planning stages.
We do want to have the Cross installed by then Lenten season
this year and depending on the weather maybe a cement floor for
a small altar. We would like to plant shrubs to outline the garden
this spring. We are having a nurseryman join our next meeting to
guide us and answer questions regarding placement of shrubs,
etc. More information will follow.

Fr. Tuan Nguyen D. Min.
