Dear parish family,
2 Sunday Ordinary Time B
As we read about Jesus' life, we can't help but notice that whenever He chose someone to be His disciple, He always
asked them to leave everything behind and follow Him. And that is what He asks of us. Each one of us has received a
call from God, a vocation. We are all called to do different things in different ways but basically what God asks is that as
we go through life we do live as best as we can, giving all our time, our talent, our resources, to fulfilling our vocation.
We all have an obligation and a responsibility to listen for the call of God, to discern what He wants us to do with our
lives, and to follow Him faithfully, as the first disciples did. To say, "Speak Lord, for your servant is listening," as we
heard Samuel say in our First Reading this Sunday.
In the gospel story, Jesus puts this question to the two disciples to followed him, "What are you looking for?"
When the two were not really sure what to respond, Jesus invites, "Come and you will see." They followed him and
their lives were forever changed, and in effect they changed also the world they lived even reaching as far to our time.
Jesus puts same question and invitation to us here and now. He is asking a root question, getting us to focus
on the core of our lives. What are our priorities? Where did we get them? Are they based on Jesus and his teaching? If
so, how do they affect the course of our lives? Do our daily choices reflect the one we have chosen to follow?
Following Jesus takes a lifetime of listening, learning, acting and, when necessary, repenting. This period of
learning may be what gospel is suggesting when Jesus invites the searchers to, "Come and you will see."
John’s gospel has deeper layers than the mere physical meaning of the words. When Jesus responds to the
Baptist’s disciples, "Come and you will see," he is not speaking of the house where he lives. He is inviting them to come
to experience him on a deeper level – to discover where he has life with God.
Parents want their children to believe in Jesus and practice their faith. We want our friends and those we know
to share our faith and receive the life it gives us. The church is a community of Jesus’ disciples who have "stayed" with
and have "seen" where he lives. Our responsibility, as individuals and as a church called to follow Jesus, is to invite
others to "Come and you will see." People will come to know Jesus through our witness and testimony about him.
Following Christ means following Him without hesitation, without allowing people or things to come between us
and Him. It means not only showing courage and integrity in our own personal faith. That is the vocation that we all
have in common. May we live it out faithfully.
Blessings to you and have a good week!
Fr. Tony
Querida familia parroquial,
llagar a nuestro tiempo.
Padre Tony
