Los Spurs serán huéspedes de honor en la Casa Blanca

El entrenador Gregg Popo­
vich, su equipo de entrenadores
y los 16 jugadores que integran
el roster de la franquicia Silver
& Black, así como el magnate
Peter M. Holt, serán huéspedes
de honor de la Casa Blanca este
lunes 12 de enero de 2015 a las
2:05 p.m., tiempo del este.
En misiva enviada a la gerencia
general de los Spurs por el de­
partamento de prensa de la Casa
Blanca se describe la invitación
hecha por el presidente Obama,
quien les brindará una cálida
recepción por haber conquistado
su quinto campeonato el año
pasado.
El campeonato lo lograron
de­rrotando con marcador de 104
a 87 al poderoso rival Heat de
Miami en el quinto partido de la
serie a ganar 4 de 7 partidos de
la 2014 NBA Finals.
En el mismo texto, la Casa
Blanca indica que la visita del
campeón Spurs es parte del pro­
grama deportivo del presidente
Obama, quien ha reconocido los
respectivos esfuerzos de depor­
tistas – individuales y en equipo–
que han dado lo mejor sobre el
terreno deportivo y en programas
de beneficio en sus respectivas
comunidades.
El día siguiente de su visita a la
Casa Blanca, los Spurs pagarán
visita al equipo Wizards de Wash­
ington en la sede de estos ubicada
en el Verizon Center (601 F St.
Northwest, Washington D.C.),
donde tratarán de volver a de­
rrotar al cuadro entrenado por el
timonel en jefe Randy Wittman,
quien en su cuerpo de asistentes
de entrenador tiene al estratega
Don Newman, quien por ocho
temporadas (2004-2012) fue
asistente de entrenador con los
Spurs y en su poder ostenta un
par de anillos de campeón en las
temporadas de 2005 y 2007.
En calidad de anfitriones en
AT&T Center el sábado 3 de
enero los Spurs recibieron a los
Wizards en partido presenciado
por una audiencia de 18,581
espectadores. El juego concluyó
favoreciendo al pentacampeón
con marcador de 101-92.
“Estamos emocionados de ir a
la Casa Blanca. Aprovecharemos
nuestra estancia, que será corta,
para agradecerle al presidente y
primera dama sus finas atencio­
nes. A la vez le pediré que me de
alguna estrategia para seguir ade­
lante en los partidos que restan
de la temporada. Todos estamos
motivados porque recibiremos
motivación por parte del presi­
dente Obama”, afirmó Popovich.

Parents of missing Ayotzinapa
Aquifer programs students to spread awareness in U.S.
rests with S.A. voters

The fate of the Edwards Aquifer Protection Program
(EAPP) will be decided by voters in the May 2015 municipal
elections.
Since 2000, the EAPP has utilized a voter-approved oneeighth cent sales tax to increase the property boundaries for
the Recharge and Contributing Zones, as a way to prevent
development in wildlife and environmental areas.
The one-eighth cent sales tax used to fund the programs
requires voter approval. San Antonio residents previously
approved the tax in 2000, 2005 and 2010.
According to EAPP reports, their programs have helped
conserve 130,000 acres of land and 36 billion gallons of water
a year for San Antonio residents.
The program has also helped diversify the city’s water
supply and has partnered with community organizations to
protect and preserve the natural habitat of plants and animals
throughout the area.
San Antonio City Council members Ray Lopez, District 6,
and Ron Nirenberg, District 8, filed a Council Consideration
Request this week to encourage city staff to prepare the EAPP
and the Linear Creekway Parks Development Programs as
ballot items for voter approval in May. Council members
Roberto Treviño (District 1), Alan Warrick (District 2) and
Mike Gallagher (District 10), also signed the request.

It’s been almost six months
since the 43 teacher students
went missing outside of Iguala,
Mexico but the country and the
world have not forgotten.
Though the wife of mayor of
Guerrero who allegedly sent cor­
rupt police officers to stop them
from protesting her speech is now
facing federal charges; the people
of Mexico are still in turmoil
over the state of their country
and are bringing their revolution
state side.
On Wednesday, Jan. 7, a group
of community activists that in­
cluded lawyers, nationals, millen­
nials, and mostly educators, met
at the Southwest Workers Union
in San Antonio to mobilize a plan
to help bring the U.S. Ayotzinapa
National Caravana, that consists
of family members and comrades
of those who are still missing, to
our city and set up a base where
they can share their stories and
have their voices heard about the
revolution that is currently taking
place in Mexico.
Though they have been in­
volved with protests and dem­
onstrations in Mexico, this is
the first time they will come to
the Unites States to speak on a
platform and our country can hear
about what happened first hand.

La mayoría de estos parques
ofrecen clases de gimnasia por
medio del programa Fitness in
the Park y están al alcance de la
comunidad libre de costo.

The votes are in for the recent
Special Election to find succes­
sors for State Sen. Leticia Van de
Putte and former State Rep. Mike
Villarreal.
The vote earlier this week saw
less than 5 percent of the regis­
tered voters in Senate District 26
and State Representative 123 go
to the polls.
In the race for Van de Putte’s
district, five candidates were
involved and the runoff victors
were Trey Martinez Fischer and
Jose Menendez, both lower house
members.
Martinez Fischer bested
Menendez by almost a 2-to-1 in
the vote count. Martinez Fischer
tallied 8,231 votes to Menendez’s
4,824, a final count that didn’t
surprise Martinez Fischer.
“Are you kidding me, a 20 point
lead? The community has made
a choice in this race,” an exited
Martinez Fischer told La Prensa
election night.
Unofficially, the final count
was Martinez Fischer with 8,231
votes and Menendez 4,824.
The five-man race in State Rep­
resentative District 123, former
San Antonio City Councilman
Diego Bernal was the clear cut
winner with a little more than 47
percent of the vote. The nearest
opponent was Republican Nunzio
Previtera who barely managed 21
percent of the vote.
“We came close,” Bernal said.
“We had a good showing, and I’m
proud of that showing and I’m
proud of that showing, but I’m
not surprised and I’m ready for
the next round.”
Official canvassing of the vote
is next week. It’s expected Gov.
Rick Perry will set a date for the
runoff election, thereafter.

Volar es un acto de fe Matando en el
Volar en un
avión es lo más
parecido a la
religión. Exige
un triple acto
de fe: en el
piloto, en las
Jorge Ramos condiciones de
la aeronave y
en el clima propicio el día del
vuelo. En la mayoría de los ca­
sos no hay manera de verificar
el entrenamiento del piloto, el
mantenimiento de la nave, ni los
mapas de navegación. Y, aun
así, nos subimos. Por pura fe.
Eso mismo hicieron las 162 per­
sonas que murieron hace unos
días en el accidente del avión
de AirAsia cerca de Indonesia.
Lo confieso: no soy religioso,
pero tengo fe en los aviones. No
es una fe ciega. Vivo plagado de
dudas, sobre todo cuando hay
turbulencia. Pero generalmente
confío en que los aviones me
pueden llevar del punto A al
B sin matarme. Hasta hoy no
me han fallado (una aerolínea
me acaba de enviar una tarjeta
que comprueba que he volado
con ellos más de dos millones
de millas).
Soy un viajero frecuente irre­
dimible, un pecador del aire
y les rezo más a los ingenie­
ros que a Dios. Cuando hay
problemas en el aire no digo:
“Virgencita, sálvame de ésta”.
Sino: “Espero que el técnico
que reparó el motor derecho
del avión sea muchísimo más
listo que los presidentes que he
conocido”.
Por mi profesión –y por esas
malditas ganas de viajar lejos
del lugar donde nací– le he
dado la vuelta al mundo varias
veces. Pero llevo bien cargada
mi maleta de sustos. Hace poco
viví uno de los más grandes.
Recientemente viajé a Bora
Bora durante las vacaciones.
Esta isla en medio del Pacífico
es, sin duda, una de las más
bellas del planeta y también una
de las más aisladas. Abordé un
Boeing 777 en Los Ángeles y
enfilamos hacia Papeete, capital
de la Polinesia francesa.
Casi nueve horas después, en
medio de una tormenta y cuando
estábamos a solo unos metros de
la pista del aeropuerto interna­
cional, el piloto abortó el ate­
rrizaje y aceleró con furia para
volver a tomar altura. “Vientos
muy fuertes”, dijo con calma.
Aterrizamos sanos y nerviosos
en el segundo intento. Eso,
lo sabría después, era solo un
adelanto del horror de la tarde.
Hice la conexión para volar
en un avión de hélice los 45
minutos que separan a Papeete
de la isla de Bora Bora. Luego
de un retraso de siete horas
y tras una lluvia torrencial,
despegamos a las cinco de la
tarde. Grave error. Volamos,
los cerca de 60 pasajeros, entre
nubes grises y amenazantes.
Aterrizar en medio de un agua­
cero tropical y feroz parecía
imposible; regresar un suicidio.
El piloto trató de aterrizar en la
pequeña pista de Bora Bora pero
al darse cuenta que íbamos al
desastre abortó el intento. Era
mi segundo del día.
El piloto se volvió a incrustar
en las nubes cargadas de rabia y
agua. Fuera de mi ventana solo
veía un velo blanco y gotas de
lluvia, como balas, golpeando
el vidrio. Apreté mi cinturón de
seguridad hasta que no dio más.
Perdí el sentido de la orienta­
ción mientras unos pasajeros
lloraban y otros gritaban. No
sabía si íbamos hacia arriba o
hacia abajo. Me sentía como
frijol en licuadora. Esperaba
un golpe tremendo en cualquier
momento. Le recé al piloto:
“Ojalá que él si sepa dónde es­
tamos”, y a quienes hicieron ese
avión: “Que no le falle el radar,
por favor, por favor, y que no
se rompa por la mitad”. Fueron
unos 15 minutos de absoluta
agonía.
Mis rezos funcionaron. Los
instrumentos de navegación
pusieron al avión, una vez
más, frente a la pista de Bora
Bora y el piloto, con bravura
y burlando la tormenta, lo bajó
sin estrellarse. Yo, claro, fui
el primero en aplaudir con las
palmas empapadas. Decenas
más me siguieron.
Nada es igual después de
vivir una experiencia así. Te
prometes no volver a quejarte
nunca más en la vida. Este es
mi tercer gran susto aéreo: el
primero fue durante la guerra
del Golfo Pérsico en 1991 cuan­
do dejó de funcionar uno de los
motores de un avión C-130;
el segundo en el 2000 cuando
una avioneta –que me llevaba
en Venezuela a entrevistar al
presidente Hugo Chávez– se
llenó de humo y tuvo que ate­
rrizar de emergencia.
A pesar de todo, sigo volando.
El avión, para mí, es el más
maravilloso invento de la hu­
manidad. Es, casi, una máquina
del tiempo. Te encierras unas
horas y apareces en otro lado
del mundo.
Me enteré de la desaparición
del vuelo de AirAsia minutos
antes de treparme en un avión
para un vuelo de casi cinco
horas. No dudé en subirme.
Llevo toda mi vida apostando
a que mis aviones –y los de mi
familia– no se van a caer. Esa
es mi fe. En eso creo.
Mostré mi pase de abordar y
me metí al avión. Pero al sen­
tarme, junté mis palmas y me
di cuenta que ya me estaban
sudando.

hacia adelan­

acción de los republicanos de la
Cámara hizo la acción ejecutiva

El 20 de noviembre del 2014,
el presidente anunció la Acción
Ejecutiva de Responsabilidad
de Inmigración. Usando su
poder ejecutivo, el presidente
está expandiendo elegibilidad
para el programa de DACA.
También anunció la creación
de un nuevo programa para
los padres de hijos ciudadanos
americanos y residentes per­
manentes, conocido como la
Acción Diferida para Padres.
Padres indocumentados que han
estado en el país más de cinco
años tendrán que registrarse con
el gobierno, pagar impuestos,
y someterse a una revisión de
historial criminal, asumiendo
el costo por su propia cuenta.
Si son aprobados recibirán
protección ante deportación y
un permiso de trabajo válido
por tres años.
A pesar de que el presidente
ha anunciado los cambios que
hará a nuestro sistema mi­
gratorio, todavía no se puede
solicitar. Comparto con uste­
des la siguiente información
general como un guía que será
útil para ayudar a preparar a
nuestra comunidad para la ac­
ción ejecutiva.
Una forma importante de pre­
pararse es juntar documentos
que ayuden establecer su iden­
tidad, demuestre su presencia
en comunidades americanas,
y compruebe su parentesco a
residentes legales y ciudadanos
estadounidenses. Este tipo de
documentación se necesitará
para demostrar elegibilidad
para una protección ante de­
portación. A continuación se
muestra una lista de los tipos
de documentos que pueden ser
útiles en juntar para poder estar
mejor preparados para aplicar.
Actualizaremos esta lista
cuando el presidente anuncie
detalles específicos detallando

Just a Thought: Some San Antonio history
As a for­
mer middle
school and
high school
history
teacher
and other
subjects,
I encour­
Steve Walker
aged my
students to read history books
on their own for their own enjoy­
ment. I also encouraged them to
come up with some historical
facts that they could use to chal­
lenge their classmates and me
in a game of historical trivia.
Two of those high schools were
Memorial in Edgewood ISD and
McCollum in Harlandale ISD.
We would write down some in­
teresting facts we read and make
questions out of them to bring
to class to see who knew more
history than others. They were
up for the challenge. Each time
we did it the winner would earn
an extra 100 to average in their
grades for the semester which
proved to be an added incentive.
It was a fun activity.
In a recent Express-News
article, the writer listed over 40
questions about the history of
San Antonio to see how much
the reader knew about the Alamo
City. Surprisingly, very little of
it referenced the history of the
many contributions of Hispanics
to the local community. It was
more on historical old buildings
and businesses which was still
kind of fun trying to answer
them.
It brought back sharp memo­
ries of my classroom filled with
excited students raising their
hands to give an answer in hopes
of winning the competition. I
thought today’s column would
address some historical facts
about San Antonio primarily
related to our city’s Hispanic
heritage.
Did you know that activist
Adina de Zavala lived at the
Menger Hotel downtown from
1926-1932? Born in 1861, she
died in 1955. She was an el­
ementary teacher, historian and
preservationist of Texas History.
Her father was Augustine, son
of Lorenzo de Zavala the first
Vice President of the Republic
of Texas. As a prolific writer she
authored History and Legends of
the Alamo and Other Missions In
and Around San Antonio.
Question: Who likes to eat lots
of Fritos? They were invented
here in San Antonio in 1932.
My father was offered the op­
portunity to buy stocks in Fritos
really cheap in the 50s, but opted
to purchase other stocks that
didn’t do so well. There went my
inheritance!
Another interesting fact about
San Antonio from 1731-1837,
one hundred and thirteen His­
panics served consecutively as
Mayor before an Anglo, John
Smith was elected. In 1842 Juan
Seguin served one year and it
wasn’t until another Hispanic
Mayor, Henry Cisneros, was
elected in 1981 until 1989. Since
then Ed Garza (01-05) and Julian
Castro (09-14) have served as
mayor.
A number of my govern­
ment class students at Memorial
volunteered to work for Mayor
Cisneros campaign, stuffing
envelopes and passing out fliers.
We were an active part of the first
modern day Hispanic mayor’s
election since 1842!
Do you remember the name of
the 80th United States Attorney
General from San Antonio, ap­
pointed February 2005 by Presi­
dent George W. Bush becoming
the highest-ranking Hispanic in
executive government up to that
time?
Alberto Gonzales was also the
first Hispanic to serve as White
House Counsel and earlier he had
been Bush’s General Counsel
during his governorship of Tex­
as. Gonzales had also served as
Secretary of State of Texas and
a Texas Supreme Court Justice.
Local attorney Roy Barrera
Sr. (68-69) became the first
Hispanic Texas Secretary of
State followed by San Antonio
native Alberto Gonzales, (9899) San Antonio Congressman
Henry Cuellar, (2001-2002) and
hometown icon Hope Andrade.

Many voters recall before he
became a Congressman, Henry
B. Gonzalez was the first His­
panic to be elected a Texas State
Senator? He was followed by
Dr. Joe Bernal and currently the
first female Hispanic Senator
from San Antonio, Leticia van
de Putte.

inform and promote “all things
Hispanic” for the readers of
La Prensa, I sign off with “As

Con su deformada interpre­
tación religiosa lo han hecho
católicos, judíos, musulmanes y
hasta narcotraficantes y criminales
que oran antes de matar porque
creen que Dios los bendice y los
protege.
Recordemos las cruzadas que
fueron campañas militares contra
los musulmanes, impulsadas por
el papado desde Roma, las cuales
se libraron por casi 200 años entre
1095 y 1291, con el propósito de
“restablecer el control cristiano
sobre Tierra Santa”; después vino
otra persecución en España y Eu­
ropa Oriental que culminó a finales
del siglo 15 y luego aplicaron la
“santa” inquisición.
Terrorismo, maldad y ambición
han existido siempre en la historia
de la humanidad. La diferencia
ahora es que es una empresa que
se exporta por el mundo y es más
fácil ofertarla y camuflarla, por
ejemplo, en éxodos y asilos políti­
cos, generados por la violencia
que fomentan fuerzas oscuras que
mantienen el control del petróleo.
Por otra parte, explotan el fervor
religioso y el descontento social.
Hay quienes opinan que al
decirles musulmanes radicales se
generaliza y en parte tienen razón
porque los terroristas son funda­
mentalistas que interpretan distinto
el Corán, pero, aunque la religión
se llame Islam o islamismo, la
forma políticamente correcta de
referirse a quienes la profesan es
musulmanes.
Es indigno que en el siglo 21,
cuando el mundo ha avanzado tec­
nológicamente (quiero creer que
también espiritualmente), todavía
hayan batallas sangrientas como la
que libra el yihadismo que se hace
llamar Estado Islámico para auto­
proclamar y justificar el califato.
También es espantoso que se
ejecuten masacres como la de
París para “defender la dignidad”
de Mahoma, cuyo predicado, los
árabes islámicos, interpretan como
la preexistente y perfecta palabra
de Alá. Hay que recordar que la
campaña religiosa y militar de
Mahoma fue sangrienta, enfren­
tándose a los judíos y cristianos
que no admitían desmitificar y
borrar de la historia a Jesús.
Para avivar la caldera algunos
radicales cristianos (que los hay)
dicen que Jesús advirtió en Mateo
24:11 sobre un falso profeta; afir­
man que era Mahoma, a quien
no se le habría aparecido el Ar­
cángel Gabriel sino el demonio,
suplantando al enviado de Dios,
por lo tanto, consideran el Corán
como una falsa doctrina. Habría
que analizar quiénes, cuándo y con
qué intenciones escribieron la Bi­
blia que conocemos los católicos.
De malas interpretaciones y
falsas traducciones de los libros
santos está plagada la historia
religiosa del mundo.
Supuestamente, basándose en
el Corán, a los yihadistas que se
inmolan por Mahoma les prometen
72 mujeres vírgenes en el reino de
Alá. Pobres muchachos cuando
su espíritu regrese a la Energía
Cósmica (el paraíso), de dónde
venimos, porque sufrirán desilu­
sión al ver que allá no hay género.
La mayor parte de los terroristas
se dejan manipular por líderes
perversos que, como lo dije, inter­
pretan mal el Corán, otros son mer­
cenarios pagados por la industria
de la guerra, las mafias petrole­ras
y el supra-poder, porque las lu­
chas religiosas, en el fondo, no
son asuntos de fe sino de control,
poder y riqueza y por esa razón, en
el mundo se seguirá matando en el
nombre de Dios.

City lawsuit against police, fire
unions to go before committee

There’s a call to withdraw
a lawsuit that the city of San
Antonio filed against The San
Antonio Police Officers Associa­
tion (SAPOA) and San Antonio
Professional Firefighters Asso­
ciation (SAPFA) unions.
The lawsuit, filed on Nov. 7,
2014 was due to an “evergreen”
clause in police and firemen
contracts, which in-cluded “zero
premium” health plans. The city
deemed it unconstitutional and a
threat to future city budgets. The
clause was included in the latest
first responder’s contract, which
was signed in 2009 and expired
in September.
The clause could remain in ef­
fect for 10 years if an agreement
between the unions and the city
is not made.
Since the lawsuit, there has
been no bargaining from either
side of the conflict.
District 7 Councilman Cris
Medina was the forerunner in
the movement. On Tuesday, he,
along with fellow col-leagues

gran, District 5 Councilwoman
Shirley Gonzalez and District
6 Ray Lopez suggested a City
Council Consideration Request
that the entire suit should be taken

Embassy Suites Hotel to open at Brooks City Base

Hotel on Brooks City Base. The
full-service hotel will feature
approximately 155 suites, a
restaurant, and 8,000 square feet
of conference and event space,
making it the only conference or
event center south of downtown
San Antonio and north of Corpus
Christi or McAllen. The hotel is
scheduled to open in 2016 and
will be called Embassy Suites
– Brooks City Base by Hilton
Hotels.

with construction, which in turn
translates into a strong economy
and a vibrant real estate market.
More than 600 local realtors
gathered Thursday morning for
the 2015 Housing Forecast at the
Omni Colonnade Hotel, a prime
opportunity for attendees to learn
about the ins and outs of the cur­
rent and future real estate market
conditions.
Mary Ann Jeffers, 2015 chair
of the San Antonio Board of Re­
altors, predicts there is plenty to
look forward to this year.
“2015 is going to be as good
as or better than what 2014 was,”
Jeffers told La Prensa. “We still
see an increase in sell prices, the
market is strong and our interest
rates are good.”

from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17. The
closing session and graduation will
be 1:30-8 p.m. April 7 at Perico’s
Stone Oak. All other sessions
will be at the UTSA Downtown
Campus from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Topics will center on leadership,
marketing, human resources and
ethics. Register for the program

Business owner and 2012 BBE
graduate, Rodney Gray, said, “the

went down, the demand stayed
strong and prices continue to go
up.”

and that’s what San Antonio is,”
Van de Putte said. “My journey
this past year has given me the
greatest appreciation for my
hometown. When the outcry came
this November asking me to come

Van de Putte, a Democrat,
has also been able to show she
has nonpartisan pull after being
in-troduced by Harvey Najim, a

Democrats that Republicans,”
Najim stated. “When she and I
sat, she didn’t have a Democrat
or Republican button on. She is
the right person to lead our city.
She does not practice partisan
politics. She will always do the
right things for the right reason,
and not for political gain. I think
she’ll bring Republicans together
to help run this city.
“She did a great job of convert­
ing me,” Najim continued with a
chuckle.

Representative Mike Villarreal
who announced his plans early
November, and new to the race,
Tommy Adkisson. Adkisson an­
nounced his mayoral plans earlier
this month.

Eastside students get fit with Spurs’ Austin Daye

Despite the cold and blistery
weather, the fourth and fifth
graders of Smith Elementary
school were up and running, and
even shooting some one-on-one
hoops with San Antonio Spurs
forward Austin Daye.
Smith Elementary is part
of The Silver and Black Give
Back’s Team Up Challenge: a
service that allows kids to take
what they’ve learned in the
classroom and integrate it into
real ways to help out the com­
munity, while empowering youth
to change the world.
To get into the program, stu­
dents need to create a project
that will help improve their com­
munity in one of five categories:
arts and culture; education; en­
vironment; health and wellness;
and uniformed services. It works
hand-in-hand with Silver and
Black Give Back, which means
Spurs players work alongside
children to make those goals
come true.
Smith Elementary created
Team Tiger: an after school
basketball and gardening club.
Members range from second to
fifth grade. Their goal is to cre­
ate a commitment to maintain
healthy living habits and share
it with the neighborhood.

at the school, was one of those en
route to protest and was fortunate
to escape the night the 43 students
were captured.

ken into three different routes
around the South and Atlantic
coast states, the Midwest, and

five cities in Texas, 40 cities all

the tour are to bring this issue to
the attention of people in the Unit­
ed States, to help build solidarity
for the missing students and their

doing so to cast light on the hu­
man rights issues involved and
perhaps influence both public
opinion and governmental action
in Mexico and the United States,”
said Ricardo Briones, a commit­
tee organizer for the San Antonio
stop of the tour.

The situation gets sticky when
it comes to the process of getting
them into the country, as it takes a
long period of time and requires a
hectic process to get visas to gain
access to the country. National
Coordinator for the carvana,
Julio Cesar Guerrero called the
situation a “catch 22” because
activists around the country are
blindly raising funds for the tour
but are not certain when they will
be in the country. The goal is to
get the carvana into the country
by the first week of February
and to spend a couple of days in
each city.
Their eventual goal is to have
all three legs of the tour meet up
at the UN to hopefully discuss
the United States’ relationship
with Mexico’s government and
to re-think the agreements they
have in place as they claim it’s
the government that is the main
source of the problem.

by 2016.
Councilman Lopez hopes that
the Linear Creekway Parks De­
velopment Program will expand
existing park spaces and create
new areas connecting the San
Antonio community.
“Continuing this program will
further encourage residents to
lead healthy, active lifestyles,”
Lopez said. “Once the linear
parks are fully connected around
the entire city, provide an ad­
ditional mode of transportation
and mobility.”
Voters can expect to see the
programs on their ballots in
May, before the programs can be
reauthorized by the San Antonio
City Council.
Daye, along with strength
trainer Mathew Herring decided
to drop by the school to give the
children a crash course on ways
to incorporate more fitness into
their lives.
“It’s very important for kids to
be fit, for athletics or everyday
life. You know how the country
is, in some places more fit than
others,” Daye said. “It’s always
fun to go out with the kids, espe­
cially at this age. It’s important to
have let them have a good sweat,
or workout. You want to help
them to strive to be the best.”
The fitness course included
plenty of jumping jacks, squats,
and pushups, and Daye ensured
that nobody felt left out. Always
a team player, he encouraged
the other kids to cheer for their
teammates.
“Being a team player is key to
success,” Daye said, addressing
the students. “You need to have
the support and encouragement
of your team to do well.”
Being around the young stu­
dents hit a soft spot for Daye. His
father Darren played forward for
the Boston Celtics in the early
‘80s. He told the students of his
memories playing basketball
with his father as a child.
“I can’t wait until I have a son
or daughter to be able to play
with them,” Daye said. “The
greatest thing for me is to watch
them grow the same way I did.”

Nada fácil pero no difícil cumplir con metas del nuevo año

Para cuando mis tres lectores
tengan esta edición dominical en
sus manos ya habrán pasado once
días del primer mes en el nuevo
año (2015).
Por lo que si ya se falló en al­
gunas de las metas trazadas para
llevarlas a efecto en lo que resta
del 2015 con un “borrón y cuenta
nueva” se pueden comenzar a
realizar nuestros propósitos que
de todo corazón hicimos en la
víspera del Año Nuevo.
Para todas aquella personas
que se sobrepasaron deleitándose
con los tradicionales manjares del
Thanksgiving, fiestas navideñas y
de fin de año que como recuerdo
les dejaron unas libras de más en
su estructura humana, prometier­
on perderlas en cuanto entrase el
2015 y todavía no se han dado el
suficiente tiempo para llevarlo a
cabo, este clima es propicio para
hacer todo tipo de ejercicios ya
sea en casa, el gimnasio o en ter­
reno montañoso.
A once días del nuevo año, les
aseguro que pueden dar un nuevo
banderazo enfocándose en hacer
ejercicio, comer la mitad de las
acostumbradas porciones, beber
bastante agua y hacer a un lado las
bebidas gaseosas y de contenido
alcohólico. Ello les conducirá
a tomar conciencia y respon­
sabilidad personal para retomar
la figura deseada y la paz mental.
Claro que llevar a cabo dicha
disciplina personal no les será
nada fácil, pero tampoco difícil.
Seamos sinceros con nosotros
mismos y echémosle ganas a
nuestras metas para que nos
conduzcan a un mejor sistema
de vida.
En mi caso, de nueva cuenta,
me puse la meta de seguir adelante
en mi programa de rehabilitación
alcohólica, así como en alimenta­
ción y realización de ejercicios
rutinarios, además de cumplir
con las recomendaciones de mi
doctor, quien obviamente por
sus servicios me cobra una buena
suma de dinero, lo cual sigue
desbalanceando mi presupuesto
económico ya que carezco de
seguro médico.
El año pasado me sostuve en­
tre las 195 y 200 libras, lo cual
es un promedio bueno para mi
edad para llevar control de la
alta presión sanguínea y nivel de
colesterol. Sin embargo, faltando
quince días para entrar al 2015,
me propuse seguir comiendo un
buen desayuno y cena con racio­
nes medianas a las acostumbra­
das. Logré tumbarme cinco libras,
esto a pesar de no estar conforme
con el déficit alimentario que me
propuse.
En la cena dejé de saborear el
postre, porque las calorías con­
sumidas eran lo que mayormente
me dejaba con el estómago lleno
por varias horas, haciéndome ver
gordo, lo cual detesto, aunque me
lo digan cariñosamente.
En la primera semana del 2015
me he sentido mejor, porque he
venido siguiendo paso a paso
mi propósito de comer menos,
pero alimentarme con productos
de contenido rico en proteínas,
minerales y Omega 3, que son los
nutrientes básicos en el sistema
sanguíneo.
Ser sincero con uno mismo en
lo que come y bebe es la mejor
arma para combatir la obesidad
y el deseo por las bebidas em­
briagantes en exceso. Lo mismo,
no consumir platillos grasos, los
cuales podemos cambiarlos por
unos buenos filetes de pescado,
verduras frescas y fruta de tem­
porada, sin son orgánicas mucho
mejor.
Recientemente acudí a la cober­
tura de un evento celebrado en la
cocina principal del San Antonio
Food Bank, donde el delantero y
poste australiano Aron Bynes, en
representación de los Spurs y de
la fundación Silver & Black Give
Back (SBGB), estuvo interactuan­
do con estudiantes preparato­
rianos del Estrada Achievement
Center, que son semifinalistas
del programa académico denomi­
nado SBGB Team Up Challenge.
Ante ellos, el espigado basquet­
bolista dijo sentirse contento por
habérsele invitado a ser parte de
la preparación de un platillo (tos­
tadas vegetarianas), un platillo
especial preparado con vegetales
sembrados y cosechados en las
parcelas del Food Bank.
Entre sus charlas, Baynes co­
mentó que en su país natal él y su
familia siempre se han alimentado
de forma correcta, sacándole pro­
vecho a la madre tierra.
“Comer platillos caseros, con
carnes selectas y abundantes
vegetales, ello nos da bastante
energía para realizar nuestras
tareas cotidianas y el ejercicio
que hacemos durante la semana.
Me voy contento, pero estaré listo
para cuando me vuelvan a invitar
para venir a cocinar con ustedes.
Sigan adelante promocionando el
buen comer y calidad de vida”,
expresó Baynes.
El evento fue cubierto por la
mayoría de canales de televisión,
lo cual sirvió para que los televi­
dentes tomaran conciencia y sigan
poco a poco las instrucciones que
Aron le dio al selecto grupo de
preparatorianos, quienes están
compitiendo por ganar el campeo­
nato en su especialidad, que es
la preparación de alimentos de
contenido no graso.
La cocinera Kimberly Granato,
en calidad de directora de arte
culinario del San Antonio Food
Bank, se encargó de darle la
bienvenida a Baynes y a los estu­
diantes, a quienes claramente dio
instrucciones sobre la preparación
de las tostadas vegetarianas. “Lo
primero que tienen que hacer es
higiénicamente lavarse las manos,
ponerse una malla cubre cabello,
delantal y guantes sanitarios de
plástico. Seguidamente tienen que
checar la seguridad personal, ya
que usarán utensilios cortantes.
En caso de un sorpresivo ‘estornu­
do’, levanten alguno de sus brazos
y doblados llévenlos al nivel de la
boca para evitar estornudar cerca
a los productos que tienen de fren­
te. Vamos a tener buen tiempo
cocinando este bocadillo, que es
bastante recomendable, saludable
y sobre todo para cocinarlo en
familia”, dijo la directora Granato.
Estas noticias son buenas para
que nos sigan estimulando en
continuar con nuestras metas, no
dejarlas a un lado, seguir ade­
lante por lo que resta del 2015.
Ya verán pronto el cambio en su
persona, gozarán de mejor salud
y estarán alejados de las visitas
al doctor o la sala de emergencia.
Recuerden que primero está su
buena salud, que es lo que nos
mueve a cumplir con nuestras
obligaciones diarias, tanto en
casa como en el empleo. Ninguna
empresa desea tener en sus depar­
tamentos personal enfermizo, sino
todo lo contrario.
Que en este 2015 el Creador
Divino nos ayude a soportar
presiones laborales y personales,
esto es otro de mis metas, para
que a todos nos vaya de lo me­
jor por parejo, uno mismo hay
que hacerse valer, cumpliendo
nuestras metas. Con ello estoy
seguro que vamos a dar el debido
rendimiento, ya sea en el hogar o
el sitio de empleo que es donde
con el sudor de nuestra frente
ganamos el dinero para el sustento
personal o familiar.

at the White House on Monday, Jan. 12
by President Barack Obama for winning
the 2014 NBA Finals. The franchise
visited the Oval Office during two other

win drought, won an exciting and
controversial game over the Detroit
Lions.
With 6 minutes left in the game
a penalty flag was thrown on third
down. Lions fans rejoiced as a pass
interference penalty was called
on the Cowboys. Immediately
after the flag, an angry Cowboys
receiver Dez Bryant stormed the
field towards referees. The officials
huddled up and decided to pick up
the flag and not make a call.
It’s an extremely rare occasion
that an official would pick up a flag
and call a “no call.” This led to a
Lions punt that would inevitably
be the game winning drive for the
Cowboys.
The official’s excuse from another angle who reversed the call
stated:“Although the defender was
not playing the ball, there was no
contact made to the receiver before
the incomplete pass.”
With time left to get back the
lead and win the game the Lions
simply could not get any momentum and some would say “choked”
as there were dropped passes and
no protection for quarterback Matthew Stafford and running back
Reggie Bush.
This week, in the divisional
round, the Cowboys will travel to
“The Frozen Tundra” and “Titletown, U.S.A.” Green Bay, Wis.
to face the high-powered Packers.
Having a week to recover after
a calf injury that was suffered in
the previous game for the Packers
against rival Lions, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will play
against the Cowboys according to
Packers coach, Mike McCarthy.
The Cowboys defense proved
that there is more than just a superstar running back and out of
nowhere clutch, yes, dare I say it,
clutch quarterback, but there is also
a hungry and dangerous defense.
Look for the Packers offensive
line to step up and protect Rodgers.
Also, look for a strong defense to
force the Cowboys to play one dimensional on offense and frustrate
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
As for the Cowboys defense,
they will stop at nothing to force
turnovers and stop any connection
between Rodgers and his receivers, especially Jordy Nelson as the
Cowboys secondary has proved
to be just as good or even better
than the “Legion of Boom” Seattle
Seahawks linebacker and secondary core.
This weekend will be an exciting
weekend of football as the Cowboys are undefeated on the road
and the Packers are undefeated at
home. Only one can be undefeated.
As history has shown, the Packers won the previous postseason
meeting in Lambeau in the “Ice
Bowl.” Sorry Cowboys fans, but
I must say for my team, “Go Pack

El entrenador en jefe de los
Pistons de Detroit, Stan Van
Gundy, de 55 años de edad y
nativo de Indio (California)
con experiencia de 34 años en
la dirección de equipos en el
baloncesto colegial y profesional
en la NBA, recientemente celebró
en grande su sexta victoria
consecutiva, la cual fue contra
Spurs de San Antonio, actual
monarca de la NBA.
Al concluir su cerrado combate
contra el pentacampeón Spurs, el
cual ganó faltando tres décimas de
segundo con enceste del guardia
titular Brandon Jennings (con

Jethro Pugh, former member of the Dallas Cowboys’
Doomsday Defense, died
Wednesday of natural causes.
He was 70-years-old.
“This is a sad day for Cowboys fans, and our thoughts
and prayers go out to Jethro's
family,” said Dallas Cowboys
Owner and General Manager
Jerry Jones. “He was loved and
appreciated by his teammates
and Cowboys fans for decades,
and his spirit will be felt when
our team travels to Green Bay
this weekend.”
Pugh played alongside other
legends like Bob Lilly and
Randy White during his time
with the Cowboys. The defensive tackle led the team in
sacks for five straight seasons
from 1968 to 1972. He is sixth
on the Cowboys’ all-time sack
leaders list with 95.5.
During his 14 seasons with
the team he played in five
Super Bowls. He won two in
which they defeated Miami
and Denver in 1971 and 1977,
respectively. He was also on
the team that lost Super Bowls
to Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
As of late he was remembered for playing in the Ice
Bowl in 1967 in which the
Green Bay Packers defeated
the Cowboys eventually winning the Super Bowl.
He remains one of the longest tenured Cowboys playing
a career with the team that
spanned from 1965-78. The
only players to have played
longer for the Cowboys are
Ed Jones, Bill Bates and Mark
Tuinei.
CFB Championship: Ohio State faces Oregon

Despite critics who dismissed the four selections for
the newly established College
Football Playoff, the schools
who earned their spots in playoff bowls merited their respective berths.
Alabama remained consistent operating in Nick Saban's
system, playing at a high level
throughout the season. Oregon
efficiently ran the offense
through Heisman recipient
and probable No. 1 NFL Draft
selection Marcus Mariota and
decimated the Florida State
Seminoles on both sides of the
field.
Florida State was a notable
question mark but were ranked
from their accolades of being
the defending BCS Champions
and possessing an undefeated
record. Ohio State has been a
powerhouse after Urban Meyer
took over, ended the season on
a nine game win streak, and
upset the Crimson Tide in the
Sugar Bowl.
After Baylor was upset by
Michigan State in the Cotton
Bowl, it was hard to argue
their exemption from playoff
consideration.
The only program that could
have earned the No. 4 slot was
TCU, but they lost to Baylor,
and had an easier schedule than
the Buckeyes.
After all the dust has settled,
two programs still remain from
the chaotic structure of the
Top 25.
No. 2 Oregon Ducks will
take on No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes Monday in the first ever
College Football National
Championship.
The following is an analysis
of the championship matchup:
Offense
Oregon's sole loss of the season was a 31-24 upset against
the Arizona Wildcats. The
Ducks bounced back quickly,
exacting their revenge on the
last game of the regular season, blowing out the Wildcats
51-13. Quarterback Mariota
is a specialist at putting a ton
of points on the scoreboard.
Since the loss, the Duck have
scored over 42 points in the last
nine games, including a 59-20

Often criticized as the weak-
ness to the Ducks system, Oregon has allowed 421.9 yards
per game, which is more than
any other team that has ever won
a national championship. Additionally, they have yielded 22.3
points per game, a tally higher
than 15 of the 16 programs that
won the title. They rank second
to last in stopping third-down
conversions. Despite this, Oregon's defense has improved
over the season, and forced
five turnovers against Florida
State's much lauded offense in
the Ducks’ Rose Bowl victory.
Ohio State's front seven has
been deemed one of the best
defensive lines in the game,
and is responsible for 43 sacks
this season. Additionally, they
are tied for seventh nationally
in 105 tackles for a loss. Their
timing could prove disruptive
against Mariota's offensive
onslaught.
Outcome: Anticipate Mariota
to have his hand full with the
Buckeyes coverage. Advantage:

Latino organization launches
seatbelt campaign

The National Latino Children’s Institute (NLCI), whose
mission is to focus the nation’s
attention on the contributions
and unique challenges of young
Latinos, announced today the
launch of a multi-media campaign to prevent injuries and
fatalities among young Latinos
due to unrestrained drivers and
passengers.
Although automobile accidents are the leading cause of
death in the U.S. among Latinos
under age 34, there are few programs designed to educate and
inform them of the importance
of seatbelt use. The campaign
– “Do it for your family, buckle
up!” (Hágalo por su familia,
¡abróchese el cinturón!) – helps
fill this void and has the potential of saving thousands of
lives annually and preventing
countless more injuries.
According to NLCI, language
barriers, immigration status,
long-held cultural customs
and traditions, and other factors among Latinos, especially
those who have recently immigrated, pose considerable
challenges in reaching them.
However, primary research
conducted by NLCI for this
campaign made it clear that
the key cultural insight for motivating Latinos to wear their
seatbelts was doing so for the
sake of their families.
To prevent injuries and fatalities among Latinos resulting
from unrestrained drivers and
passengers, NLCI collaborated
with the National Highway
Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) to develop this
new, culturally relevant campaign to reach Latinos. Also
working with locally based Latino organizations, NLCI conducted
focus groups in various regions of
the country to ensure the diverse
Latino population was reflected in
the campaign. As a result, NLCI
developed a bilingual, bicultural
web-based campaign toolkit that is
customized for the diverse Latino
community. NLCI is making the
campaign toolkit available to partner organizations around the nation
for use in their local communities
to reach Latinos. “The toolkit will
help state and local organizations
concerned with the public safety
of their Latino communities to
reach them in a more culturally
compelling way. The toolkit and
its messages incorporate traditions
and values that we know engage the
Latino community. The campaign
serves to motivate drivers and passengers to use seatbelts by focusing
on the terrible consequences car
accidents can have to the family
if drivers and passengers are not
properly restrained and protected,”
stated Maria Rita Jaramillo, NLCI
Board Chair.
NLCI hopes to build and connect
a nationwide network of informed
leaders and organizations that serve
and support young Latinos. “Seatbelt use is the single most effective
and immediate way we can save
lives and reduce injuries among
young Latinos. This is a winnable
battle!” Jaramillo added. “Working
with our partners we believe that
the use of culturally targeted media,
especially digital and social media
is key to connecting with the Latino
community and changing behaviors
and outcomes.”
A recent Pew Research Report
indicates that Latinos top everyone
in social media activity. According
to the survey, 80 percent of Hispanic adults in the U.S. use social
media, that’s more than Whites (70
percent) and African Americans
(75 percent). “It is evident, that
if we are to engage Latinos, we
must reach them through the use
of social media,” said Jaramillo.
“NLCI’s campaign toolkit provides our partner organizations
with the tools they need to do so
effectively.”

downloaded free of charge from

gov. Latino-serving organizations, law enforcement and
public safety officials, and the
general public are urged to help
save lives by using and promoting the NLCI seatbelt campaign

Expert fears disappearance of Spanish
in the Southwest United States
EFE - The "rapid change" in
the use of Spanish in the southwestern United States could
lead to its disappearance in the
region in the coming decades,
unless acceptance of bilingualism is encouraged, according to
a researcher at the University of
Colorado Denver.
Devin Jenkins, an expert in
sociolinguistics and bilingualism,
found that in southern Colorado
and northern New Mexico, an
area with a high concentration
of descendants of early Spanish
and Mexican citizens, the use of
Spanish is no longer growing, and
in its "traditional" way is being
replaced by English.
The American, who speaks
fluent Spanish and has compiled
information for the past 35 years
in this regard, also believes that
in other areas of the Spanish nation is booming due to the arrival
of, especially Mexican Spanishspeaking immigrants.
But that will change in the
coming decades as the "third generation", ie, the grandchildren of
immigrants adopt English.
"The change of language in the
third generation is simply the process by which the grandchildren
of immigrants tend to be monolingual in the prevalent language

the language they used their immigrant ancestors," said Jenkins.

The expert found that changes
in language use are "rapid and
massive" and that as a result
"could stand to lose the linguistic
treasure that this region has for
400 years".
But not everything, however,
is negative.
In the 1980s, for example,
speak Spanish in the Southwest
was generally associated with
low income, limited education,
jobs with low wages, high unemployment and poverty. However,
according to the 2010 census, this
correlation is not as severe as it
was before.
"When you consider how
schools and treated the Spanishspeaking community a generation
ago, I think things are moving in
the right direction," said Jenkins.
"That gives us courage, but
there is still much room for improvement," he added.
The professor believes that the
use of Spanish "will continue to
grow in the country" but not in the
southwest, but in regions without
a high concentration of Latinos,
such as the northwest and in states
such as North Carolina, Georgia,
Idaho and Tennessee.
At the same time, he explained
that the weakening of the correlation between speaking Spanish and negative socioeconomic
factors should promote social
acceptance of bilingualism, which
"should be the norm in the Southwest."

reinscribirse en el TPS

Relaciones Exteriores de El
Salvador, Liduvina Magarín, instó
esta semana a los salvadoreños
residentes en Estados Unidos
beneficiarios del Estado de
Protección Temporal (TPS) a
reinscribirse al beneficio que fue
ampliado por 18 meses más.
El gobierno estadounidense
extendió el amparo migratorio
desde el 10 de marzo de 2015 hasta
el 9 de septiembre de 2016 y otorgó
60 días para la reinscripción de
204.000 salvadoreños protegidos
bajó el TPS.
“Empezamos este día la
reinscripción al TPS y estamos
muy contentos con esta decisión del
presidente Obama, queremos que
no se nos quede ni un salvadoreño
sin registrarse”, manifestó a Efe
la viceministra de Relaciones
Exteriores para los salvadoreños
en el exterior.
El nuevo TPS permitirá que
los inmigrantes de este país
centroamericano sigan gozando
del respaldo legal para residir y
trabajar en Estados Unidos de
manera temporal.
Este beneficio temporal “es
lo más seguro que tenemos por
ahora”, enfatizó Magarín haciendo
alusión a la próxima Acción
Diferida para padres de ciudadanos
estadounidenses y residentes
legales anunciadas por el presidente
el pasado 20 de noviembre.
“El mensaje para los
salvadoreños es claro, lo más
seguro por ahora es la prórroga del
TPS, con la acción diferida todavía
no tenemos la información precisa
de cuándo comenzará el proceso de
inscripción, (aunque) se ha dicho
que en el próximo verano y puede
ser abril o mayo”, indicó.
Añadió que sus connacionales no
deben atenerse a este beneficio y
quedar desprotegidos porque en ese

Para reinscribirse al TPS los
salvadoreños deben demostrar
residencia continua en Estados
Unidos desde el 13 de febrero del
2001 y presencia física continua
desde el 9 de marzo del 2001.
El costo de la reinscripción será
de 465 dólares, de los cuales 85 son
para los datos biométricos y los otros
380 para el permiso de trabajo.
La viceministra indicó que la
embajada en Washington estará
ofreciendo asesoría legal y agregó
que se ampliarán también los
horarios en los 17 consulados de El
Salvador en Estados Unidos para
asistir a los salvadoreños con los
formularios.
Explicó que en la página de la
Cancillería (tps.rree.gob.sv) los
salvadoreños podrán encontrar
respuestas a sus consultas o dudas
sobre la reinscripción, que también
pueden obtenerla llamando a la línea

Sister Sarah Sharkey leaves legacy of
stellar, passionate teaching at Oblate

Sister Sarah Ann Sharkey, OP,
professor of sacred Scripture
at Oblate School of Theology
for 19 years and holder of the
first endowed teaching chair
in OST’s history, has retired
and has been named professor
emerita.
OST administration, faculty,
staff and students gave her a
despedida, or farewell, Dec. 4 in
the school’s Whitley Theological
Center. OST President Father
Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, recalled
that when he arrived at OST in
2005, “I didn’t know any of the
faculty, but I soon learned that
Sarah was exceptional — especially in her continuing education lectures,” adding:
“Every time Sarah had a (continuing education lecture), we
had to run it two days in a row
because we couldn’t get all the
people in the first day.” The OST
president also noted that when
a team of three bishops visited
Oblate School of Theology as
part of the Vatican-mandated
nationwide seminary visitation,
“one of the most positive comments they made about us was,
‘Sister Sarah Sharkey conducts
excellent workshops for priests
and bishops.’ That’s about the
highest praise you can get.”
Father Rolheiser observed
that when great professional
athletes retire, they are eligible
for induction into a sports hall
of fame after five years, but in
special cases, the five-year rule
can be waived. “It’s like a canonization when masses of people
shout, ‘Santo subito!’” (Latin for
‘Sainthood now!’”) The audience applauded warmly as he
addressed Sister Sarah directly,
commenting, “If there were a
hall of fame for this school, Sarah, you would go in on the first
ballot, and you wouldn’t have
to wait five years. You’ve been
a great professor and you’ve
taught students as effectively, as
deeply and as clearly as anybody
who’s ever taught here. Beyond
being a great teacher, I’m sure
that the whole faculty would
agree that you’ve been a great
colleague and a great friend of
OST.”
A faculty member at OST
since 1995, Sister Sarah became
the first professor appointed to
the Father Frank Montalbano
Chair in Sacred Scripture when
it was inaugurated in 2009. The
Montalbano Chair is the first endowed chair in OST’s 115-year
history. Father Rolheiser noted
at its establishment that “when
an institution inaugurates a new
teaching chair, it normally looks
beyond its own faculty roster to
find a ‘big name’ to appoint to it.
We deliberately didn’t, because
our ‘big name’ was already inside the school: Sister Sarah.”
Her retirement comes after 19
years of stellar and passionate
teaching at OST that earned her
heartfelt praise from students,
faculty members and people
from the wider community who
attended her continuing education events through the years.
Many made a point of returning
whenever she was scheduled to
give public lectures.
Dr. Scott Woodward, vice
president for Academic Affairs
and Dean, presented Sister Sarah
with a large album of pictures
and personal tributes from administrators, faculty, students
and staff. He also presented her
with a portrait of St. Eugene
De Mazenod, founder of the
Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, by G.E. Mullan. The
last gift was a large quilt.
“We heard you’re planning
to move to some cold northern
clime where perhaps God didn’t
intend humans to exist,” Dr.
Woodward joked to Sister Sarah
in presenting the quilt. “So we
got you something to keep you
warm, and you might want to
open it. There may be a surprise
inside.” She opened it, discovering a pattern of cats all over the
quilt, reflecting Sister Sarah’s
legendary love for felines. “What
a precious gift!” the honoree
exclaimed. Director of Food Services Jennifer Mattingsley baked
cat-shaped cookies for the event.
Father Bill Morell, OMI, who
was president of OST from 19952004, recalled in the book of tributes being her “neighbor,” since
her office was next to his on the
school’s second-floor corridor.
He often noticed students dropping in to visit her. “I realized
how contagious her enthusiasm
was,” he wrote.
“A neighbor knows when the
ground shifts. There was a time
called PTS — Prior to Sarah, and
there was a time called SSE —
the Sarah Sharkey Era — during
which the School morphed into a
thing of wonder,” Father Morell
commented. In addition to her
insatiable love of God’s word,
he said, she was “a companion
in dreaming of a new place for
OST in the community.”
Sister Susan Mika, OSB, who
offices in the school, observed
that she and Sister Sarah had
shared only 10 years at OST,
yet, “I count you as a sacred,
lifelong friend. For each and
every student lucky enough,
you’ve been teacher, friend
and guide. Watching the carefilled way you mentored them
filled me with joy and a sense
of pride.” Sister Susan also
asked, “Who could ever take
your place?”
Brother Richard Daly, CSC,
longtime executive of the Texas
Catholic Conference and an
OST Trustee, wrote that while
Sister Sarah made tremendous
contributions to the school, he
was privileged to observe her
contribution to the wider Catholic community across the state.
“Her work with the Catholic
Scripture Study benefited men
and women from throughout
Texas who proclaim the word
to the people of God,” he added.
Father Jonathan Felux, priestsecretary to Archbishop Gustavo
García-Siller, MSpS, cited Sister
Sarah’s teaching for instilling in
him “a deeper appreciation for
the truth that the Scriptures
are as alive today as they were
for those who wrote them and
heard them proclaimed.” He
stated that she taught through
her own passion for Scripture
and the fervor of her own teaching and preaching. Now in his
own preaching and teaching,
he wrote, he tries to convey the
passion he received from her
with the knowledge he gained.
“I offer my profound thanks to
Sister Sarah for her witness and
her integrity,” he concluded.
More than 30 Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament signed a letter expressing
their sadness but attesting to
their belief that their hearts will
continue to grow through her
love and her Gospel witness.
“My heart is filled with gratitude,” Sister Sarah told the audience. “For every one of my 19
years here, and for every person
I’ve met here — each one of you.
As I have sat back in these last
weeks and thought about it, each
of you has incredibly enriched
my life, directly or indirectly,”
she said. “For the gift — and I
count it as gift — of watching
so many sincere and committed
women and men prepare for
and move into fruitful, precious
ministry for the church and our
suffering world, my heart is
filled with gratitude. For the
precious opportunity to study,
to pray with, to teach and to be
formed and reformed by God’s
word, over and over again, my
heart is filled with gratitude. I
assure you I take each of you
with me with enormous thanks
to our God, who has enriched me
beyond words.”

Nation’s largest christian retail chain opens with ’90 Minutes in Heaven’

The idea that turned the nation’s
largest Christian retail chain into a
giving engine to support widows
and orphans now expands to movies. Family Christian Stores’ new
sister company, Family Christian
Entertainment (FCE), announces
the Atlanta shoot, starting Jan. 26,
of 90 Minutes in Heaven, the 2004
New York Times best-selling book
(7 million-plus sold) about Pastor
Don Piper’s near-death experience. Kate Bosworth (“Superman
Returns”) and Hayden Christensen
(“Star Wars,” “Jumper”) star. Michael Polish (“Twin Falls Idaho,”
“Big Sur”) directs.
In 1989 Don Piper died in an
automobile accident (paramedics
had covered him with a tarp) when
another pastor at the site prayed
over him. Before Piper returned
to life, and to a protracted physical recovery, he saw Heaven, met
family members, friends, church
folks, teachers . . . even joined
the procession as a heavenly choir
entered Heaven’s gates.
“Piper struck me as a reliable
witness,” Christianity Today editor and former Christian History
editor Mark Galli wrote in CT’s
December 2012 cover story about
the rise in accounts of “near-God
experiences.” “Piper simply had
the look and sound of sanity, of
someone who was telling the
truth, whose word was his bond,”
Galli said.
“We know our audience, we
know the power of stories, and we
plan to make at least two films a
year,” 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN Producer Rick Jackson said.
Jackson founded and is CEO of
Jackson Healthcare, the nation’s
third-largest healthcare staffing
company. He and two other investors formed Family Christian
Ministries, a non-profit holding
company that owns Family Christian Stores, IDisciple, Family
Christian Entertainment—and
sends 100 percent of profits to
Christian charities.
“In production . . . in quality,
budgets and professionalism, the
Christian and family markets are
maturing, and we’re upping the
ante again,” Jackson said. He
adds that Family Christian Entertainment is open to all sources for
ideas–from developing original
scripts to ideas that come in the
door. “And we’ll stay true to the
story,” he said. “When faith is a
factor, it stays in.”
While Family Christian Stores
is the leading seller of Christian
DVDs, Jackson emphasizes that
FCE theatrical films, as they
become DVDs, will sell in many
outlets beyond Family Christian
Stores. And, again, all movie
profits will go to charities.

tengan que cocinar alguna receta
deben tener el debido cuidado
higiénico y de seguridad, sobre
todo cuando utilicen utensilios
filosos. Pónganse cómodos y sigan bien nuestras instrucciones.
Se trata de que aprendan a darle
el toque delicioso a lo que se va
a cocinar. Ello les ayudará en el
programa culinario que con éxito
están llevando en sus proyectos de
preparar platillos con productos
frescos”, dijo Granato.
Por su lado, Baynes se comprometió a seguir participando en
programas de beneficio comunitario concernientes a la fundación
y los Spurs.
“El buen comer es algo es-
pecial en nuestra vida, ello nos
ayuda a salir adelante en nuestras
obligaciones cotidianas. Nos da
suficiente energía tanto física
como mentalmente”, dijo Baynes,
quien se encuentra jugando su
tercera temporada con los Spurs

El proyecto estudiantil se denomina “Estrada Achievement
Center Garden to Table Team Up
Challenge”, el cual se encuentra
compitiendo en la fase semifinal
con posibilidades de ser elegido
uno de los finalistas de entre los
veinte grupos académicos semifinalistas.
En el mes de abril se elegirán a
5 grupos como finalistas (campeones) y de premio se les otorgará la
cantidad de $20,000 para que continúen trabajando en el desarrollo
de sus respectivos proyectos.

Orient Spice Café: your lunch fortune awaits

They say the best way to tell
if a Chinese restaurant in San
Antonio is good is check it out
during the lunch hour and if
it’s crowded you’re in the right
place.
Why lunch time? People are
in a hurry and time is of the essence. A good eatery has quick
service and good food and that
keeps them coming back.
On San Antonio’s west side
there’s a shortage of Chinese
restaurants. Along west Loop
World you’ll find them at every
other exit, but not inside the loop
and not in the near downtown
area.
Take heart, Chinese food lovers. There’s a really good Chinese diner at Bandera Road and
Cincinnati. It’s called the Orient
Spice Café. You can thank the
Makilan brothers, Chris, Fidel,
Ireneo and Jimmy for this. They
decided 11 years ago to try the
food business and they’ve done
fairly well. The selections they
offer run the gamut of Asian
foods, Chinese, Filipino, Thai
and Vietnamese.
Asian food eateries are like
Mexican restaurants, except
where they’re concentrated. The
Medical Center is Thai City,
from Callaghan and Fredericksburg Roads to Wurzbach. Like
mentioned earlier, Loop World
is Chinese and mainly buffets.
Filipino restaurants are almost
nonexistent and the number of
Vietnamese you can count on
one hand.
That’s why the Orient Spice
Café is such a welcomed relief.
Like Loop World eateries, it offers a daily buffet and it’s quite
filling. There’s more, however,
a lunch menu that feature 15
items.
Dinner has four special combos with a choice of chicken,
pork or spicy beef. Tempura
selections are also available.
On the buffet the lo mien
noodles are like angel hair, but
spicy. If pork is your favorite
it’s offered in the traditional
sweet and sour variety or a Filipino Sinigang. This is tender and
a flavor you can’t put a taste to
and Ellen, the lone server is too
busy taking care of the other 14
tables to tell you, but the smile
in her eyes says it’s all good.
Your sweet tooth can be satisfied by tapioca with coconut
milk that could serve as the main
dish. The sweetness isn’t overpowering, but it’s sweet enough
to make you wanna go back for
more. Maybe next time you’ll
try the fried wrapped bananas
or fried sweet bananas. You
can’t go wrong with any choice
of dessert.
My gauge for a good Chinese
restaurant is the combination
fried rice. Orient Spice Café has
some of the best
I’ve tasted and trust me, Joe
knows food. You will not be
disappointed in whatever selection you make.

McNay celebrates World War II’s 70th anniversary

The McNay Museum celebrates the contributions of the
“Greatest Generation” in the
new exhibit, “World War II in
Photographs: Looking Back,”
a collection of black-and-white
photographs from the battlefield
and the home front, nearly 70
years after the war’s ending.
The diverse collection of
photographs form a cohesive
world narrative that includes
milestones like the alignment
of the Axis Powers in the 1930s,
the storming of the Beach at
Normandy, the efforts of the
Monuments Men, and the allied
troops liberation of Europe in
1945.
“It’s kind of exciting because a lot of our generation
hasn’t seen these photographs,”
Genevieve Hulley, the curatorial intern for the McNay said.
“Anyone from my grandparent’s
generation knows these images.
We’re hoping to bring it to this
generation, and letting other
generations remember it.”
The exhibit combines both
digital and film prints from
seven different sources, including museums and galleries in
San Antonio, Dallas, Fredericksburg, Santa Fe, and the Library
of Congress in Washington D.C.
“The point of the show is more
about the image and less about
the object,” Hulley said. “We
have a mix of digital photographs that we printed ourselves
and photographs that were made
later in the 1960s; It’s more
about the concept rather than
the object.”
Visitors will likely recognize iconic images like Alfred
Eisenstadt’s “V-J Day in Times
Square,” which shows an Ameri-

declared victory over Japan, or
Joe Rosenthal’s “Raising of the
Flag at Iwo Jima.”
The exhibit also features a
large number of lesser known
photo collections like Toni
Frisell’s portraits of the Tuskegee Airmen and unknown military photographers who helped
document each aspect of the war.
“I think people have a nostalgia for this period in history
because there was a clear ‘good
and bad,’ Hulley said. “We can
see this in black-and-white photographs; there’s the good guys
and the bad guys. Of course
that’s never really been true, but
it’s very unlike war today, where
our enemy is largely unknown
or unseen.”
The collection also explores
Texas life during World War II
with artifacts like letters, food
rations, and war propaganda.
“You kind of forget that this
happened here, in Texas, not just
in Europe. A lot people trained
here, and a lot of people went
through this on the home front.
The exhibit runs at the McNay
Art Museum from Jan.13 to
May 10, 2015. McNay admission ranges from $10 to $15 for
adults, and $5 to $10 for students, seniors and active military
depending exhibits and galleries
on view.

Family is an important aspect of Latino culture that has
been embedded generation to
generation. Though there are
many variations of dialects
when it comes to the Spanish
language, the term “family”
and it’s meaning all translate
the same.
For artist, poet, and musician Lourdes Perez from San
Sebastian, Puerto Rico, family
has inspired a 108 page illustrated short story collection
and complimentary 11-track
CD entitled Dulce Vigilante:
Remembranzaz de la Region
Oeste de Puerto Rico (Sweet
Guardian: Remembrances from
the Western Region of Puerto
Rico), with the help of her
niece, Andrea Maria Carnaval,
who is a visual artist that will
bring visual representation the
stories through pen and ink
drawings.
Dulce Vigilante is a multimedia historical memoir from
Puerto Rico with three generations of women artists telling
the stories of their 87-year-old
mother/grandmother, Carmen
I. Cruz, who is a respected
schoolteacher, oral historian,
and artisan who raised nine
children and who was simply
known as ‘Aida’ around San
Sebastian.
For the past 15 years, Aida
had been jotting down her nostalgic stories and sending them
to her daughter Lourdes, who
has turned several into songs
and décimas which are poems
that use a 10-line stanza system
that only few poets are gifted in.

album are her sister Miriam
Perez who is an acclaimed

Telemundo welcomes new co-anchor

Creative Creatures turns a year old

What started off as a small
event within the artistic community has since expanded into
something much larger. Creative
Creatures is an event that many
musicians have performed at and
where many artists have showcased their work.
The almost monthly event turns
a year old next Saturday, Jan. 16
and the celebrations are sure to
be a bang. The anniversary show
will take place at Fitzgerald’s Bar
and will showcase over 35 artists
and crafters as well as four bands
Young Costello, Fea, Nada Mas
Basura, and Dawn of the Phoenix.
What is impressive and inspiring about the Creative Creatures
events, is the fact that they were
solely a community-based project
that started off as an idea between
the now married creative power
couple, Karen Rios founder of
Pointe and Chute Photography
and Tri-Circle Designs founder
Eddy Rios.
Since its beginnings, Creative
Creatures has brought together
music, art, and style under one
roof with a set theme each event
that has been held at various
locations.
“Over the last year Creative
Creatures has progressed in
many ways,” Co-Founder Karen
Rios said. “Our collective of artists, musicians, DJs and vendors
has grown so much. We started
out with about 25 participating
artists, three bands and one DJ
for our first show, and over this
year there have been close to 200
individuals that have showcased,
vended and participated in one of
our events.”
2015 marks a new journey for
the event and leaves the door
wide open for them to expand
even more. From their first
show at the Limelight that only
had three bands (Last Nighters,
Frontage, and Creatura), Creative Creatures grew during 2014
to bigger things such as being a
huge part of memorable events
such as Monkeyfest, the N. St.
Mary’s Walkabout in which
every bar/venue on the street
participated in, and Create-apalooza.
“I’ve noticed the community
grow closer and our following
and supporters grow as well,”
said Rios. “Even through multiple venue changes, crazy weather
conditions and whether it was a
21-plus or an all-ages show, our
supporters continue to come out,
celebrate creativity and spread
the word about what we do.
That’s all we can ask for, really.
Exposure for new and known
artists and musicians and just
providing the community with a
fun gathering of genuine people
that love what they do”
The event on Jan. 16 marks a
milestone for Creative Creatures
and the theme is in the key of celebration so black & white attire
is encouraged. It’s $5 at the door
and doors open at 8 p.m.

Pax, one of the biggest gaming conventions ever, is headed
to San Antonio on Jan. 23-25 at
the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center.
The ever-growing gaming
convention that doubles in size
every year originally began from
the people who founded Penny
Arcade. Much like a Pokemon
changing forms, Penny Arcade
became a small 4,500 person
event in Belvue, Wash.
When the show eventually
expanded so much that it was
bursting at the seams it moved to
Boston and finally became PAX
East. It immediately gained
notoriety as the largest gaming
event in North America.

According to an statement of
the company, the photoshoot was

Bieber and Stone join a long list
of models, actors and actresses who
have participated in ad campaigns
for the iconic brand.
The trend began in the 1990s
with English model Kate Moss and
American actor Mark Wahlberg.
For Bieber, this campaign is “a

“Inherent Vice” brings on the grooviness ‘Selma’ focuses on an amazing truth

If you were a fan of films like
“The Big Sleep,” “Chinatown,”
and “L.A. Confidential” but always
thought “man this film could use
some more drug use, and delusional
paranoia.” Then director Paul
Thomas Anderson’s latest movie
is just for you.
Anderson is easily in the Top 5
of my favorite directors. His body
of work is incredible. He works
miracles. He even managed to
make Adam Sandler a believable
and likeable character in “Punch
Drunk Love,” and that is no easy
thing to pull off. All kidding aside
(minus “The Master”) he has done
amazing things.
“Inherent Vice” is no different
and totally different all at the same
time. It is no different in the way
that he created another amazing
film, and totally different in the
way that this film does not feel
like one of his movies, it veers into
uncharted territory.
The story follows Doc Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) a stoned
do-good private eye in the groovy
‘70s. When an old flame named
Shasta Fay (Katherine Waterson)
comes back into Sportello’s life
and asks him for help involving
real estate giant, Michael Z. Wolfman. Apparently, Wolfman’s wife
has plotted with her lover to have
Wolfman committed to the looney
bin so that she and her lover can
have reign over Wolfman’s legacy.
Sportello is sent down a path
filled with Nazi bikers, crooked
cops, paranoia, baseball bats and
lots of pot.
Much like “The Big Sleep”, this
film is filled with exposition, tons
of names and several misleading
plot points. The only difference this
time around is that you are seeing
all the confusion alongside the
stoned Sportello making it much
harder to keep up.
Anderson adapts the unadaptable Thomas Pynchon book of the
same name. He proves that even the
most complicated and poetic noir
novels in existence can be done and
done well. It sacrifices any turn at
dumbing it down for the audience,
however.
For being such a stoner throw
back to the ‘70s, this nugget is
hard to follow. Peel open your
eyes don’t blink and listen to every
single word making note of who is
who and you might come out of
this one with a vague idea of what
happened.
I’m used to expositional films
like this so for the most part I
understood it the first time around.
However, the second time watching it really allowed the humor to
stretch its legs. “Inherent Vice” is
funny. The characters and plot lines
are noir sidelined and borderline
cartoonish at times.
The voice over done brilliantly
by Joanna Newsom gives voice
to Sportello like a guardian angel
formed from the Dawn of Aquarius.
“Inherent Vice” is beautiful in
every way from its cinematography
to its sharp tongued dialogue. It
washes over you like a rolling haze
and manages to be one of the most
far out and groovy films that I have
seen in recent history.
This is the first movie of its
kind that will make you want to
go march right after watching it.
“Selma” is one of those truly inspirational films that make you
want to accomplish great things.
“Selma” follows the actions
that Martin Luther King Jr. took
to demonstrate peaceful protests
in the South during the dangerous times of the Civil Rights
movement.
While “Selma” could have
been broad and easily veered
off course in attempts of showing MLK’s entire life or veering
off into Malcolm X, (who also
makes an appearance) it stays
focused on telling the story the
events leading up the march and
the march itself.
The story shows the tactical
side of how MLK and his organization accomplished such
a major feat. It displays how he
and his team looked at the Civil
Rights Movement carefully
and planned each step from the
politics to the involvement of
the media and the people.
David Oyelowo who plays
MLK, does an fantastic job by
capturing the grandiose as well
as the small details. Instead
of choosing to cut away to
actual footage of MLK’s big
speeches, Oyelowo decides to
tackle it head on. He creates
goose bumps from what he
comes up with. Everything from
the cadence of his speech to his
gestures are painted perfectly.
At times it feels like H.G. Wells
lent us his time machine and
gave us window to look through.
Cinematographer Bradford
Young does amazing work. His
choice of angles and palettes are
spot on. More than not, bio pics
are limited in visual range. But
Young becomes the exception to
the rule and creates a beautiful
look that legendary cinematographer’s Conrad Hall and Roger
Deakins would have to consider
a high bar.
“Selma” does an amazing job
of not ever getting over the top
or cheesy. It doesn’t strive to
be anything other than the true
story of a man and his organization.
It is an emotional ride and the
decision to cut to stock footage
during the march made the entire
film swing for the fences and
connect.
I would be shocked if Oyelowo doesn’t get the Oscar for
this one. His acting is some of
the best I have seen in totally
recreating someone to the extent
that his approach accomplishes.
Bio pics are very hit or miss
with me and usually end up feeling superfluous or like it’s trying
too hard to make someone look
great. “Selma” lays out the truth
and allows you to appreciate the
angels and devils in the detail.

regresa con disco de duetos

Juan Gabriel cumplió el miércoles 65 años en plena actividad,
a punto de continuar su gira
internacional de conciertos y
de presentar un nuevo disco de
duetos que llegará al mercado en
los próximos meses.
Tras un 2014 algo accidentado
por problemas de salud –una
neumonía que le llevó a cancelar
en abril la primera parte de su
gira “Volver”, que retomó en
agosto– el artista arrancará el
próximo 5 de febrero la segunda
parte de este tour en Phoenix

las últimas semanas el cantautor ha regresado a los estudios
de grabación para grabar las
canciones de su próximo disco,
un álbum de duetos con artistas
como el colombiano Juanes o el
puertorriqueño Luis Fonsi.
Con más de 100 millones de
copias vendidas a nivel mundial
y una estrella en el Paseo de
la Fama de Hollywood, Juan
Gabriel cuenta con varias nominaciones y premios Grammy y
Grammy Latino, y fue homenajeado por la Academia Latina de
la Grabación como La Persona
del Año en 2009.
Alberto Aguilera Valadez,
su verdadero nombre, nació
en Parácuaro (Michoacán) el
7 de enero de 1950 y tuvo una
infancia difícil, en la que pasó
15 años internado en un Centro
de Mejoramiento Infantil, donde
compuso su primera canción a
los 13 años; Debutó en 1965 en
el programa “Noches rancheras”.

Hace unos tres meses estuve
comprometida con mi novio
de 10 años, y fue hace unas
semanas que le regresé el anillo
porque sentí que no éramos
compatibles en muchas cosas.
Él está devastado y me manda
mensajes de texto diciéndome
que se va a quitar la vida si me
ve con alguien más y que no
va a poder vivir si no se casa

Mexican Songs de Bilboard
con el tema “Eres una niña”,
tras subir una posición en esta
clasificación.
El ascenso del tema de Ortiz motivó que “Levantando
polvadera”, del grupo Voz de
Mando, el primer corte promocional del disco del mismo
nombre, baje del primero al
segundo lugar.
Por su parte, el corrido “Javier el de Los Llanos”, del
legendario grupo Calibre 50, se
mantiene en el tercer casillero
desde la semana pasada.
“Hasta que salga el sol”, de la
Banda Los Recoditos, fue el que
más puestos ganó dentro del top
ten de esta categoría, al subir
dos posiciones y ubicarse en el
octavo puesto. Por el contrario,
“El Karma”, de Ariel Camacho
y Los Plebes del Rancho, bajó
del séptimo al noveno casillero.
El año 2015 promete seguir siendo el año de Enrique
Iglesias, pues el español sigue
dominando en cuatro categorías
con el tema “Bailando”, que
interpreta junto al cantautor
cubano Descemer Bueno y el
grupo Gente de Zona.
Iglesias se mantiene en la
primera posición en las listas
Hot Latin Songs, Latin Digital
Songs, Latin Streaming Songs
y Latin Pop Songs.
Por otra parte, también se
mantiene en el primer lugar en
las listas de Top Latin Albums
y Latin Pop Albums con el disco
“Sex + Love”.
El artista regional mexicano
Gerardo Ortiz se coloca en el
tope de la lista Latin Airpplay,
que recoge las canciones más
escuchadas dentro de la radio de
habla hispana en todas las categorías, gracias al tema “Eres
una niña”, un logro que obliga
a que la canción “Que suenen
los tambores”, del salsero boricua Víctor Manuelle baje al
segundo lugar.
En esta lista, “Levantando
polvadera”, de Voz de Mando, se mantiene en la tercera
posición por segunda semana
consecutiva, lo mismo que
“Bailando”, de Enrique Iglesias.
El tema que ganó más posiciones dentro de esta categoría,
y que apunta a meterse dentro
del top ten, es “Me vuelvo un
cobarde”, de Christian Daniel,
que subió de la posición número
27 hasta la vigesimosegunda.
