MISSION STATEMENT
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest” Mt 11:28
We, the parish community of St. Sebastian, for over 100 years have celebrated our common faith and ethnic diversity and have lived
the Gospel in Woodside. United in the Holy Spirit, in prayer, and nourished by the Eucharist, we serve others as we foster the love and
truth which Jesus Christ teaches. Building on what has gone before, through Word and Sacrament, we are committed to Evangelization, Stewardship, and Welcome. In the spirit of Jesus, we seek to put our love into action as we challenge others to join us on our journey of faith.
St. Sebastian is part of the Queens North 2 Deanery that includes Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians (St. Mary’s),
Corpus Christi, Queen of Angels, St. Raphael, and St. Teresa.

Thank you for your
service to our
Parish!
FR. ABELS COLUMN
I have met with our Parish Pastoral Council
which serves as an advisory board to me. It
was a very productive meeting! I will be
sharing some of the items discussed when I
come out to do the announcements at the
end of Mass. In the meantime let me tell you that we
are planning an event on a Sunday in April that will
focus on bringing all of the many different groups of
our Parish together. We are planning to have an
International Food Festival in which we will share
each others food, culture and faith. Once I finalize
the date and details I will let you know.
You will see in this weeks bulletin a form inviting
the women in the parish to consider serving as an
Usher at Mass. I think we are long over due for
having women serve in this very important ministry.
I first brought this idea up with our current Ushers
when I met with them in June last year. I want to
thank all of our Ushers who serve us so well here at
St. Sebastian! Many have been serving us for many
years and I am truly grateful for their service at
Mass. If any women are interested in becoming an
Usher please fill out the form in this week’s bulletin
and either drop it in the collection basket or drop it
off at the rectory. I look forward to welcoming
women in the parish as Ushers. Any man who is
interested in serving as an usher is asked to speak
with me about it, as well.
Finally, Tuesday, January 20th is the Feast of our
Patron St. Sebastian. We will be having a special
Mass with music at 7 P.M. in the Church. I have
asked Msgr. Sean Ogle to preside and preach at this
Mass and to offer some reflections on the history of
our Parish which we love so very much! A small
reception will follow. Please make every effort to
attend.
Thank you for your support!

THE FIRST SPIRITUAL EXERCISES
Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 7 pm in the Parish

Nearly 500 years ago, St Ignatius of Loyola taught a
way of praying that led to an intimate encounter with
the Living God. This method became known as The
First Spiritual Exercises. These Exercises were created to help a person ask for and receive inner peace
and enter into a deeper relationship with God. You
too can experience the Lord in this rich and timeless
way of praying, sacred listening and spiritual conversation. More information will follow. Please RSVP
by calling 718-899-3341 X 143.

Merry Christmas!
As we conclude the Christmas season, we are making preparations for the next big celebration. Which is next Sunday and every
Sunday after that. Perhaps you would like to join one of our choirs to help us proclaim Joy to the World every week at mass. Just
come up an see one of our amazing Choral Directors after Mass. At 9:00am on Sunday you can speak with Bryan, at 10:30am come
and see me, and at 6:00pm come speak with Alfred. I hope you may consider it. It is a lot of fun and a great way to give of yourself
to our church and the Lord.
