THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
LAS AGUAS BAUTISMALES
When new sod is put in, it needs constant
saturation with water. Landscapers say that this
“knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a
branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that
joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all
times. Water is the stuff that binds the very
cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures
have used it so prominently. When Jesus
stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he
“knit” himself to what had come before
him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had
crossed it into their Promised Land. With
John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into
the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming
reign of God. He had become fully human in the
waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the
rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified
himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is
through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the
Church; through these waters we are cleansed
from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus,
it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our
mission to proclaim the Good News.
Cuando se planta un césped nuevo, debe
regarse constantemente. Los jardineros dicen que
esto “teje” el césped al suelo. Lo mismo sucede
cuando se injerta una rama a un árbol: el cataplasma que los une debe estar húmedo en todo momento. El agua es lo que mantiene unidas a
las células de nuestro cuerpo. Con razón
las religiones de todas las épocas y culturas
han usado tanto este símbolo. Cuando Jesús se sumerge en el Jordán para ser bautizado, se “teje” a todo aquello que lo precedía. Al sumergirse en el Jordán, se hizo
uno con el pueblo de Israel que había cruzado el río para llegar a su Tierra Prometida. Junto a Juan Bautista, Cristo se tejió a
la tradición profética que presagiaba la venida del
Reino de Dios. Jesús se había convertido plenamente en humano en las aguas del vientre de María y al participar del rito del Bautismo del arrepentimiento, se sintió identificado con nuestra
frágil y pecaminosa humanidad. Por las aguas del
Bautismo Cristo continúa injertando nuevos
miembros a su Cuerpo, la Iglesia; gracias a nuestro destino de vida eterna, por estas aguas somos
limpiados del pecado y recibimos la promesa de la
gracia. Para nosotros, como para Jesús, las aguas
bautismales también inauguran nuestra misión de
proclamar la Buena Nueva.

Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased,
upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering
wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his
teaching. I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I
formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the
blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism
that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went
about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy

baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open
and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my
beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

The Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from
God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through
him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, During the next two
lines, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our
sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He
will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the
Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the
Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the
dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Esto dice el Señor: “Miren a mi siervo a quien sostengo, a mi elegido, en quien tengo mis complacencias. En él he puesto mi espíritu para que haga brillar la justicia sobre las naciones. No gritará, no
clamará, no hará oír su voz por las calles; no romperá la caña resquebrajada, ni apagará la mecha
que aún humea. Promoverá con firmeza la justicia, no titubeará ni se doblegará hasta haber establecido el derecho sobre la tierra y hasta que las islas escuchen su enseñanza. Yo, el Señor, fiel a mi designio de salvación, te llamé, te tomé de la mano, te he formado y te he constituido alianza de un
pueblo, luz de las naciones, para que abras los ojos de los ciegos, saques a los cautivos de la prisión y
de la mazmorra a los que habitan en tinieblas”.

bautizado a ustedes con agua, pero él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo”. Por esos días, vino Jesús
desde Nazaret de Galilea y fue bautizado por Juan en el Jordán. Al salir Jesús del agua, vio que los
cielos se rasgaban y que el Espíritu, en figura de paloma, descendía sobre él. Se oyó entonces una voz
del cielo que decía: “Tu eres mi Hijo amado; yo tengo en ti mis complacencias”.

El Credo Niceno
Creo en un solo Dios Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra, de todo lo visible e
invisible; creo en un solo Señor Jesucristo, Hijo Único de Dios, nacido del Padre antes de todos
los siglos: Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, no creado,
de la misma naturaleza del Padre; Por quien todo fue hecho; que por nosotros los hombres y
por nuestra salvación bajó del cielo, (En las palabras que siguen todos inclinamos
nuestra cabeza hasta, se hizo hombre) y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María
la Virgen, y se hizo hombre, y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato,
padeció, y fue sepultado; y resucitó al tercer día según las escrituras, y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre; y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a vivos y muertos; y su
reino no tendrá fin. Creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor y dador de vida, que procede del Padre y
del Hijo, que con el Padre y el Hijo recibe una misma adoración y gloria; y que habló por los
profetas. Creo en la Iglesia, que es una, santa, Católica y Apostólica. Confieso que hay un solo
Bautismo para el perdón de los pecados, espero la resurrección de los muertos. Y la vida del
mundo futuro. Amén.
