The Baptism of the Lord
Sursum Corda + Lift Up Your Hearts
It has been in the Sunday Bulletin for a month. I take this opportunity to invite all parishioners to a Town Hall
Meeting tonight (Sunday Night, January11) at 7:00 P.M. The meeting will take place in the school cafeteria. For those
who are not familiar with our campus, the cafeteria is marked with a large sign identifying the school. There is also a
statue of St. Charles between the two entrances.
The Town Hall Meeting came about as a response to an anonymous request via the Sunday Offertory Collection.
While it has not been my policy to respond to anonymous mail, this request was made politely and seemed to have merit.
Together with our Parish Pastoral Council, I (we) will try as best we can to field questions about the merger that
officially took place on July 1, 2014.
I am certain that some questions will be answered but I am guessing there are other questions that will not be given
adequate response because this first year is one of trial and error. I (we) do not pretend to have all the answers. Some
things seem to have been done well and in other areas I feel that some mistakes were made. I take full responsibility for
decisions made.
At this point in time—I have a gut feeling that the Strategic Planning Process is too fast. While the process that was
used back in 1991-1993 was far too long (two years), the present planning procedure may need more depth and, perhaps,
a little more time. This is my personal opinion and does not reflect the thinking of anyone in archdiocesan officialdom.
We are told by those at the National Level that the process of merging parishes needs about five years for issues both
personal and administrative to settle.
There will be made available to all who attend the Town Hall Meeting an article from the November issue of Priest
Magazine. It was written by Joseph M. Esper entitled You Make the Call – Helping Parishioners Understand
Change. Joseph Esper is a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
One thing must be clear for all of us – the process of Strategic Planning is not unique to Philadelphia. Virtually every
diocese and archdiocese in the United States is being challenged to address issues of diminishing Mass attendance,
financial stresses, and clergy shortage.
Neighboring dioceses (Camden, Trenton, Allentown, Harrisburg) completed their restructuring before Philadelphia.
The pain of such a process, as well as the need, are both acknowledged.
Finally, I hope that our Town Hall Meeting will be conducted in a Christian atmosphere. Charity and courtesy will
be the governing rules for the evening.
On this feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we are all invited to recommit ourselves to the Gospel message and our
Baptismal Call – to be faithful sons and daughters of Jesus Christ, the Lord.
Pax et Bonum + Peace and all that is Good.

Consejo Pastoral Parroquial, Yo (nosotros) vamos a
resolver cuestiones personales y administrativas.
hijas fieles a Jesucristo nuestro Señor.
