EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
WORSHIP
ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
The Epiphany of the Lord
"They departed for their country by another way." Things were different
now. An encounter with the baby Jesus changed the Magi. Before finding the child, they had made a secret alliance with a worldly king, Herod. But after seeing this infant resting in the arms of Mary, their allegiance shifted. Now they became servants of the little Lord Jesus. They
had a kind of conversion through their encounter with Christ, and they
knew that they could no longer serve the whims of a wicked ruler.
We call this Sunday "Epiphany" because that's what the three wise men
had: an epiphany, a moment of realizing the truth about God. In this
moment these three men--kings that they were--"prostrated themselves
and did?homage" to the King of Kings. Then they went home by a different route, undoubtedly as different men. Now, their own authority as
worldly leaders took on a new character. Now, they were men who
served a power greater than themselves. As it was prophesied in the Old
Testament reading from Isaiah, even kings would walk by the "shining
radiance" of the Lord.
Let us ask ourselves today how the Epiphany of the Lord can redirect
us. What worldly allegiances have we made that need to be changed?
Are we servants of our neighbors' good opinion or of the power of money? Are we secretly aligned with popularity or prestige? No matter what
"rules" our hearts, we are invited to change our direction. We are invited
to encounter the little Lord Jesus and offer ourselves to his gentle and
loving guidance. After all, his is a kingship of concern for us. As today's
psalm says, this King "shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the
afflicted when he has no one to help him."

Deacon Corner (By Deacon Al)
The Christmas Crib (crèche) dates back to St. Francis of Assisi (Feast
October 4). It was in 1293 that the first crèche was celebrated in the
woods of Greccio near Assisi, on Christmas Eve. There lived in that
town a man by the name of John (Messier Giovanni Velitta), a very holy
man who stood in high esteem. Blessed Francis called upon John about
two weeks before Christmas and said to him, “If you desire that we
should celebrate this year’s Christmas together at Greccio, go quickly
and prepare what I tell you; for I want to enact the memory of the Infant
who was born at Bethlehem and how He was bedded in the manger on
hay between a donkey and an ox. I want to see all of this with my own
eyes.” The good and faithful man departed quickly and prepared everything that the Saint had told him. The Friars who had come from many
communities, gathered around St. Francis as did the men and women of
the neighborhood. They bought candles and torches to brighten the
night. St. Francis arrived and saw that everything had been prepared.
The crib was ready, hay was brought, the ox and the donkey were led to
the spot. Greccio became a new Bethlehem. The crowds gathered and
rejoiced in the celebration. Solemn Mass was sung. It is recorded that
after the Mass, St. Francis went to the crib and stretched out his arms as
though the Holy Child was there, and brought into being by the intensity
of his devotion, the Babe appeared and the empty manger was filled
with the radiance of the new born King. St. Francis’ idea of bringing
Bethlehem into one’s own town spread quickly all over the Christian
world, and soon there were Christmas cribs in churches and homes. The
Moravian Germans brought this custom to the United Stated. They
called it Putz. The oldest known picture is a “Nativity scene” dating
from about 380 that was a wall decoration in a Christian family’s burial
chamber, discovered in the Roman catacombs of St. Sebastian in 1877.
Worship Corner: Invitation. The prayer begins with a dialogue between the leader and the assembly. First, the priest greets us with “The
Lord be with you.” He then asks if we are ready and willing to approach
the table and to renew our baptismal commitment, offering ourselves to
God: “Lift up your hearts.” And we say that we are prepared to do so:
“We lift them up to the Lord.” We are invited to give thanks to the Lord
our God. And we respond: “It is right and just.” To “give thanks” translates the traditional Greek verb which now names the whole action:
Eucharist.
What is St. Augustine’s Church doing this Christmas Season?
Everyone is being challenged to do more “Good Deeds” this Christmas
Season and to write about them on “stars” that are in the back of
church. (If we are out of stars, write it on a piece of paper and we will
transfer them to a star later when they come in.) There is a “Star Catcher”
box to collect these “Good Deed” stars. The stars will be added to the big
Christmas tree that is up by the altar. The goal is to have so many stars
that we can’t see the tree!!! Doing “Good Deeds” should not stop at
Christmas. It should be an everyday habit of doing “Good Deeds”
each and every day.

Parishioners of St. Augustine collected over a half a ton of canned goods

collected served families for about 1 month. We ask that you continue this
ongoing ministry so that we may continue to help feed those in need. Please
keep it up as our numbers increase daily!

REFLEXIONES
primera vez a Jesucristo.
