MISSION STATEMENT / DECLARACIÓN DEL MISIÓN
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the
Christ. This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the
word of God as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community,
we are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic
Christian lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to
minister to the needs of others. We commit ourselves to
the beatitudes, to the spiritual and corporal works of
mercy, and to minister to the larger communities in which
we live and work. We respect the dignity of every person,
at all ages and stages of life.
We hand on our Catholic heritage through catechesis,
worship, service and witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of
God in our midst.
La misión de nuestra comunidad tiene su raíz en
Jesucristo. Esta misión es escuchar, responder y proclamar
la palabra de Dios que se encuentra en las escrituras
Hebreas y Cristianas.

Twenty-ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time
EVERYTHING BELONGS TO GOD
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah
concerns the Persian King Cyrus, called the
Lord’s “anointed.” Cyrus deserves this title
because he ended the Babylonian captivity of
the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us that it
was God who gave Cyrus his power. He may
be a great king, but “I am the Lord and there
is no other,” says God (Isaiah 45:5).
Today’s Gospel is also concerned with worldly power.
In the passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to trick
Jesus into speaking against the emperor. His famous answer is the perfect reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar
can be given the respect due his position, but everything
belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who
are faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us that our call and the power to be faithful come
from God.

TODO PERTENECE A DIOS
La primera lectura del profeta Isaías
tiene que ver con el rey persa Ciro, al que Dios
llama “elegido”. Ciro merece este título ya que
acabó con la cautividad de los judíos en Babilonia. No obstante, Jesús nos recuerda que fue
Dios quien dio a Ciro su poder. Quizás sea un
gran rey pero, “Yo soy el Señor, y no hay otro
igual”, Dios dice (Isaías 45:5).
El Evangelio de hoy también está relacionado con el
poder mundano. En el pasaje de Mateo vemos como los
fariseos intentan con artimañas que Jesús hable mal del
emperador. Su conocida respuesta es la perfecta réplica.
Al igual que los reyes de la antigüedad, el César debe ser
respetado dada su posición pero todo pertenece a Dios.
En la segunda lectura, Pablo da las gracias por todos
los que son fieles a Jesucristo y su Evangelio. También él
nos recuerda que nuestra llamada y el poder de ser fieles
provienen de Dios.

Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

The readings today, teach us that our human cleverness
and self promotions are nothing in the eyes of God and
that our actions will never ensnare God. In the First
Reading, Cyrus, the King of Persia during the final phase
of the Jewish exile from Israel and, like some of us, he
probably thought that he was somehow “special.” Yes,
Cyrus is certainly special, but only because of the decision
by God to “anoint” him as the ruler who was destined to
bring about the restoration of Jerusalem by allowing the
Jewish people to return home. . .this just was another
part of God’s divine plan of Salvation. Perhaps the real
message of the First Reading is that there is hope for us,
because if God can anoint a pagan to do His work, he too
can select a sinner who repents and He finds capable and
worthy of His grace.
Las lecturas de hoy, nos enseñan que nuestra inteligencia
y auto promoción humana no son nada para los ojos de
Dios y que nuestras acciones nunca atraparán a Dios.
En la Primera Lectura, Ciro, rey de Persia durante la fase
final del exilio Judío de Israel y, al igual que algunos de
nosotros, probablemente pensó que era de alguna manera
"especial". Sí, Cyrus es ciertamente especial, pero sólo

Jesus, in today’s Gospel reading, makes it quite clear that
we should repay God what is due to God. We repay God
by our good deeds, constant faith in His teachings, and
love for Him Jesus eluded the entrapment of the
Pharisees, a group of leaders who resented paying taxes
to the emperor, when Jesus turned the question around
by asking what image was printed on the coin. Oh, of
course it was Cesar’s image and not the image of God,
which is only imprinted in our hearts and minds, a
currency not of the state and not of this world. We must
be very clear who we serve and that would be our Savior
as it is so beautifully stated in the Responsorial Psalm
“Give the Lord Glory and Honor.” We should therefore
praise only God. . . the One God, not money, not status,
not material things, and not even ourselves. Our sole
purpose in this life is to make a difference with the life
and gifts given to us for the furtherance of the Kingdom
and glory of God. My prayer is that I somehow make a
difference in the lives of all who I have been called to
serve.
Jesús, en el Evangelio de hoy, deja muy claro que debemos
devolver a Dios lo que se debe a Dios. Le pagamos a Dios
con nuestras buenas obras, fe constante en Sus enseñanzas,
y nuestro amor por El. Jesús eludió la trampa de los
Fariseos, un grupo de líderes que resentían el pago de
impuestos al emperador, cuando Jesús convirtió la
cuestión en torno preguntando qué imagen se imprimió
en la moneda. Oh, por supuesto, era la imagen de César
y no a la imagen de Dios, que sólo se imprime en nuestros
corazones y mentes, una moneda no del Estado y no de
este mundo. Debemos tener muy claro a quien servimos
y debería ser a nuestro Salvador, como tan bellamente
afirma el Salmo Responsorial "Dar al Señor la gloria y el
honor." Por tanto, debemos alabar sólo a Dios. . .el
Único Dios, no el dinero, no la posición, no las cosas
materiales, y ni siquiera a nosotros mismos. Nuestro
único objetivo en esta vida es hacer la diferencia con
la vida y dones que se nos ha dado para el avance del
Reino y la gloria de Dios. Mi oración es que de alguna
manera pueda hacer la diferencia en las vidas de todos
los que he sido llamado a servir.
Finally, in order to gather our rich diverse community
together, next week, October 25th from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm,
Oktoberfest returns as Oktoberfest Fusion, a celebration
of traditional Oktoberfest treats such as sauerkraut,
Bratwurst, German Potato salad, and the culinary
delights of authentic handmade tasty tamales. Please
bring your family and friends to the celebration and
fusion of our various cultures through food, friendship,
and fun. It has been about ten years since St. Lawrence
celebrated Oktoberfest. Please take time to participate
in this parish event. Thank you St. Lawrence!

SEMINARIAN CORNER
The Diocese of Sacramento
currently has 23 seminarians in
various stages on the road to priesthood.
Five are attending Mount Angel Seminary in
St. Benedict, Oregon; eight are at Saint
Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, CA; two
are enrolled in ESL classes at California
State University, Sacramento, and one is
studying at Seminario de Santa María de
Guadalupe in Mexico City, Mexico. Five
seminarians are presently on their pastoral
year internship with parishes throughout
the diocese and one young man is on
pastoral ministry serving in a parish. Two
individuals are on leave.

On Saturday, October 11,
two seminarians, Michael Ritter
and Victor Gutierrez, were
ordained to the transitional
diaconate on at Mount Angel
Seminary. Many of you may remember
that Victor spent some time at
St. Lawrence during summer
break from school. Ordination
to the transitional diaconate is
one of the last steps prior to
becoming a priest.
Please remember to include all our
seminarians in your prayers as they
journey on the road to priesthood. And
pray to our Lord and Savior to bless the
diocese with an increase in vocations.

Sunday serves to remind us of the ever
pressing need to encourage more men and women to
undertake a life of a religious vocation.
The need for more religious is evident not only in our
Diocese but throughout the nation. Bless us Lord with an
increase of vocations in our Sacramento Diocese.
Let us, therefore, pray for increased vocations. We
ask for support of our priests, and we pray that they
remain faithful to Christ in these most demanding times.

El 26 de Octubre, los Católicos de todo el país
reconocen, le dan honor y expresan su agradecmiento
a los devotos sacerdotes que sirven al Señor. Los miembros
de la familia de San Lorenzo, con gratitud y amor sincero,
dan las gracias a Padre Enrique y a el Padre Sullivan por
responder al llamado para servir el Señor y a su pueblo
de fe.
El Domingo del Sacerdote, sirve para recordarnos
la necesidad cada vez más apremiante de alentar a más
hombres y mujeres a responder al llamado a una
vocación religiosa.
La necesidad de más religiosos no sólo es grande en
nuestra Diócesis, sino en toda la nación. Bendícenos
Señor para que aumenten las vocaciones en nuestra
Diocésis de Sacramento.
Mientras oramos por más vocaciones, les pedimos

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council
met to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were
required to draw up a new rite, including several forms.
The hot button for debate was so-called “general
absolution,” by which a penitent could be absolved of
sin without confessing to a priest. This was a difficult
debate, compounded by widely varying traditions in
both East and West. Some were surprised to learn that
the Holy See had already given permission, during the
First and Second World Wars, for this form. In 1944 the
Vatican issued a decree saying this form was valid under
extreme conditions, which bishops in mission lands and
Latin America took as a kind of “blanket permission.”
Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to find
this practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but in
peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few
priests. Although they eventually produced a ritual with
three different forms, the forms are not considered
equal, and the enriched and revised individual form is
preferred. The enrichments include a welcome of the
penitent, a sign of the cross with an encouragement to
trust in God’s compassion, new texts rich in the Word of
God, praise for God’s mercy, and a dismissal.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En 2006, en la plaza de Taos se erigió una estatua de
bronce que conmemora al “cura de Taos”, Antonio José
Martínez, un sacerdote recordado como controversial
ante varios gobiernos por defender a su pueblo.
Él fue sacerdote en Taos, Nuevo México cuando era
territorio español, luego mexicano y finalmente cuando
pasa a manos de EE. UU. Durante la época española y
mexicana Antonio estableció escuelas para niños y niñas
y fundó un seminario para preparar un clero nativo. En
1830 empezó a imprimir libros y estableció el primer
periódico Nuevo Mexicano. De esta manera estableció
Taos como un centro de educación.
En 1851 llegaron los representantes del gobierno
estadounidense con la intención de “americanizar” a
los nuevos mexicanos prohibiéndoles sus tradiciones
declarando que eran ignorantes y supersticiosas.
Antonio José contradijo este movimiento convirtiendo
su seminario en una escuela de leyes. Decía que el
gobierno de EE. UU es un burro que debe ser montado
por abogados. Muchos se opusieron a su obra pero él
continuó luchando por su pueblo hasta su muerte en
1867. Su tumba lo declara: “La honra de su país”.
