t West Point, cadets take a
class called Armed Forces in
Society. They learn that combat
veterans have higher rates of
homelessness than the general
population.
The Homeless Outreach Population
Estimate, or HOPE Count, is mandated by
the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD). It is an annual count
of homeless people. It also helps locate them
and offer services.
Remi Hajjar, an active duty Army member
and a West Point sociology professor, said
he’s been bringing cadets to participate in the
count for the past four years. The experience
is a good community outreach effort, and it
also helps students understand how to conduct
a large-scale survey.

asked if they were homeless. If so, they were
asked if they wanted shelter for the evening.
In 2016, volunteers counted 2,794
homeless people in New York City, a 12%
decrease from the year before.

well-dressed people surprised you by saying
they didn’t have a place to stay.”
Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer
has also participated in past counts. “I did not
like being the person that had to ask a guy
coming out of a limo if he was homeless,”
she said. “But you have to do it for statistical
purposes.”
The count serves to get necessary
government funding to alleviate homelessness.

many homeless New Yorkers have jobs and
families but can’t afford rising rents.
Various government agencies offer
vouchers to pay rent. While it is illegal for
landlords to turn down people with vouchers,
they often do.

Participants are selected by lottery
for the program, which runs from
July 5 through August 19.
SYEP is the nation’s largest summer youth
employment initiative, and since 1963 has
provided New York City young people between
the ages of 14 and 24 with up to six weeks of
HQWU\OHYHO H[SHULHQFH DW ZRUNVLWHV LQ DOO ¿YH
boroughs. Last summer, a record 60,113 young
people were employed in more than 10,000
worksites.
SYEP participants are compensated for
their work at thousands of diverse worksites,
including government agencies, hospitals,

ODZ ¿UPV PXVHXPV VSRUWV HQWHUSULVHV DQG
retail. Specialized programming for disabled,

opportunities to continue education and social
growth. Ladders for Leaders is an employerpaid internship component of SYEP for youth
aged 16-22.
As part of a national effort to encourage
young people to save and make healthy

option to receive their wages via direct deposit
to a bank account of their choice. Youth who
signed up for direct deposit and/or opened
savings accounts are eligible to receive over
2,000 rewards deposited to their accounts
ranging from $25-$500. Last summer, more
than 16,000 young people signed up for direct
deposit accounts, a 200 percent increase since
2014. The multi-year initiative is funded by the
Cities for Financial Empowerment (CFE) and
the Citi Foundation.

The Bronx resident has been employed as
a car wash worker since coming to the U.S.

exploited by employers.

activists and labor-group leaders to announce
the Empire State Working Protection Platform,
a series of proposals to design protect workers
in the state.
The platform was drafted by a coalition of
labor groups including Make the Road New
York, 32BJ SEIU, New York Taxiworkers
Alliance, Ironworkers Local 46, VOCALNY, Workers Justice Project,
Community Voices Heard
and others.

the progressive voice in our industry,’” said
Bhairavi Desai, Executive Director of the
Taxi Workers Alliance. “It’s the drivers that
are the progressive force in this movement,
not the $64 billion Wall Street darling.”

restaurant workers, said that tipped workers
are being left behind economically, and saw
their earnings drop after the minimum wage
boost.
“When the wage went up to $15 in New
York State, 400,000 tipped workers, 75
percent of whom were restaurant workers, saw
their wages actually decline when everybody
else’s wages went up,” she said.
On average, New York City restaurant
workers saw their wages decrease from 83
percent of the minimum wage to 66 percent
of the wage, said Jayaraman.
“That horrible two-tier wage system in
which restaurants are allowed to pay a lower
minimum wage is actually a form of slavery,”
she stated.

limits employee rights to take legal action

sexual assault in the United States.

February 19 at HERE, a performance
space located on Sixth Avenue in Soho,

Betsey joined the group in 2011.
“I was born in the Dominican Republic,” she
says. “As a little girl, writing and acting was an
outlet, especially since home was everything
but safe. I was facing abuse and personal
demons from a young age, and the stage was
my escape.”
Her work with the group has proven healing
and empowering.
“I now have a sense of family where I feel
supported and, most of all, loved,” she explains.
“This organization has given me new life by
giving me the space to breathe, yell, sing,
write, dance, [and] laugh.”
Greer Morris said the show is intended to
take the shame out of talking about sex and
sexual assault, and pose blunt questions.

Attacking Nordstrom and Immigrants

very day I wake up in mortal
fear about what I’m going to
read concerning President Trump.
His tweets about Nordstrom were

He’s actually spending time
thinking about his daughter’s
business, when he is supposed
to be President of the entire
country and help the country
prosper.
On the other hand, his ideas
about helping the country don’t
seem particularly good. For
instance, arresting and deporting immigrants

“We have a song and dance number,
and some levity thrown in,” she said.
“Sometimes you need to use humor to deal
with dark subjects.”
Girl Be Heard also sponsors afterschool
programs at 12 Title 1 schools, said Greer
Morris. Participants engage in a full curriculum
that focuses on personal development, artistic
skills, and even activism.
“We consider Girl Be Heard to be a
movement, not just a theater company,”
remarked Greer Morris.
Students also discuss topics such as body
image, sexism, eating disorders, depression
and suicide.
“We’re investing in youth for life – it’s not
just an hour lecture,” said Greer Morris. “We’re
really looking to have a transformative effect on
the lives of these young women.”
Blurred Lines will be performed at
HERE, located at 145 Sixth Avenue in
Manhattan, on February 16, 17 and 18 at 7
p.m., and February 19 at 2 p.m.

Para Greer Morris, la esperanza es que
Blurred Lines lleve a la luz temas a menudo
