El oso y el madroño cumplen 50
LA ESCULTURA DE LA PUERTA DEL SOL DE MADRID,
EMBLEMA DE LA CIUDAD, CUMPLE MEDIO SIGLO. /

TURNS HALF A CENTURY OLD.
A
su inauguración, el
19 de enero de 1967,
acudió lo más ﬂorido
de la Villa y Corte.
El oso y el madroño
(aunque al parecer es
una osa) presiden el escudo de la
ciudad, y el Consistorio encargó
al escultor Antonio Navarro
Santafé hacerles una estatua.
La ﬁgura, de bronce con pie de
granito, mide 4 metros de alto y
pesa 20 toneladas, y la colocaron
en la Puerta del Sol, entre la Calle
de Alcalá y la Carrera de San
Jerónimo. En estos 50 años ha
cambiado de ubicación dos veces,
ha visto cómo el cartel de Tío Pepe
era trasladado desde la azotea del
viejo Hotel París –hoy tienda de
Apple– hasta el 11 de la Puerta del
Sol, ha vivido la peatonalización
de la plaza, ha visto surgir el
iglú de cristal que da acceso al
intercambiador de transportes,
ha observado los días del 15M
y ha disfrutado de cincuenta
nocheviejas al son del reloj de
la Casa de Correos. Y ahí sigue,
década tras década, tiñéndose
de amarillo al anochecer bajo el
cielo velazqueño, mirando pasar

la vida. / At its unveiling, on
January 19 1967, the very ﬁnest
of the City and Court turned
up. The bear and the strawberry
tree, as it is known, and it looks
like a female bear, feature on the
city’s coat of arms and the City
Hall commissioned sculptor
Antonio Navarro Santafé to sculpt
a statue. The ﬁgure, in bronze
on a granite base, is four meters
high and weighs 20 tons and
was installed in Puerta del Sol,
between Calle Alcalá and Carrera
de San Jerónimo. Over those ﬁfty
years it has changed location
twice, has seen how the iconic
Tío Pepe sign was moved from
the roof of the old Hotel París
(now an Apple store), to number
11 Puerta del Sol, has seen the
pedestrianization of the square,
the construction of the glass
igloo of the entrance to the metro
station, observed the 15M protests
and enjoyed ﬁfty New Year’s Eves
to the bells of the clock of Casa de
Correos. And there it remains,
decade after decade, tinged
with yellow at sunset under the
Velázquez-esque sky, watching
life pass by.

Rayden
Es rapero, sí. Y también poeta. Y, desde
sus inicios sabe diferenciar muy bien los
libros de la música. De ahí que Rayden
lleve mucho tiempo forjándose una
identidad propia dentro del hip hop que
no se corresponde con el estereotipo
de rapero. Ahora, con la ayuda del
productor Ale Acosta, Rayden rompe
deﬁnitivamente con las ataduras y las
etiquetas de un género que lleva tiempo
pidiendo innovacion y riesgo. El resultado
es Antónimo, su cuarto disco en solitario,
en el que Rayden dispara sus versos bajo
un manto de rock, psicodelia, funk y
R&B. Sus dos primeros singles, No hago
rap y Pólvora mojada, ya muestran esa
evolución a la espera de la salida del
disco, prevista para el 24 de febrero. /
He’s a rapper, yes. And also a poet. And
ever since the beginning, he’s known
very well how to differentiate books
from music. Thus, Rayden has long been
creating his own identity in the world
of hip hop which doesn’t correspond to
the rapper stereotype. Now, with some
help from producer Ale Acosta, Rayden
is deﬁnitively breaking with the ties and
labels of a genre that has been thirsting
for innovation and risk for a long time.
The result is Antónimo, his fourth solo
album through which Rayden shoots
off his verses under a blanket of rock,
Psychedelic, funk and R&B. His ﬁrst two
singles, No hago rap and Pólvora mojada,
already demonstrate this evolution in
expectation for the entire album to come
out on February 24th.

1972), es un tipo normal. Si no supiéramos nada
de él, nos sorprendería averiguar que este hombre tranquilo y menudo de 44 años es una estrella de la música que llena estadios y que, según
la revista Time, es una de las cien personas más
inﬂuyentes del mundo. Está a punto de publicar
un nuevo disco, Mis planes son amarte, un trabajo con 12 canciones a las que acompañan otros
tantos vídeos musicales y que, todos juntos,
forman una gran historia: la de un astronauta
que aterriza en los tiempos actuales y busca a su
amada. Quedamos con él en un hotel de Madrid
para hablar de este trabajo y, ya de paso, de todo
lo que se ponga a tiro. Porque Juanes habla de
todo. Y se moja. Vaya si se moja.
Tu nuevo trabajo, Mis planes son amarte, lo deﬁnes como un disco visual. ¿Por qué has decidido que el álbum tuviera ese formato?
Cuando terminamos de grabar en el estudio
sentíamos que el disco tenía muy buena onda,
que no se merecía que solo hiciéramos el vídeo
de una canción. También pensamos en que hoy
en día la gente escucha y ve la música en los teléfonos y pensábamos que era una oportunidad
para intentar hacer algo así. Los americanos,
como Beyoncé o Metallica, ya lo habían hecho,
pero en el mundo latino no tanto y queríamos
llevar la tendencia hasta allá.
El primer single, Fuego, se colocó enseguida en
el número uno en las listas de éxitos. ¿Cuál es el
ingrediente para hacer un bombazo?
No sé, es una cuestión tan extraña... A veces
piensas que una canción va a ser un bombazo y
no lo es y después la que no pensabas que lo iba a

ser lo es. Pero si en el momento en el que estás componiendo tratas de estar
en una buena onda eso se reﬂeja en la música.
Y también depende del público.
De hecho, depende del público porque es el que responde, el que dice sí o
no. En ese aspecto hay que seguir al corazón y ya.
Ahora mismo hay una generación de músicos colombianos que está arrasando: Shakira, Carlos Vives, Maluma, JBalvin… ¿A qué crees que se debe
este boom de la música colombiana?
Colombia había estado hermética durante mucho tiempo. Había mucho
talento, pero no había forma de salir, y pienso que gracias a Carlos Vives y
a Shakira, y a artistas de música popular como Joe Arroyo o Grupo Niche,
hemos podido tener más oportunidades. Además, creo que el hecho de que
Colombia haya sido un país tan conﬂictivo y tan lleno de historia ha generado mucha creatividad en la gente. Y no solo en la música, también en la
literatura, en el cine, en el deporte… Hay mucho que contar.
Eres reticente a cantar en inglés, pero en este disco has incluido una canción en ese idioma. ¿Por qué te has decidido?
Había hecho varios experimentos antes. Había cantado con Tony Bennet
e incluso había grabado canciones mías en inglés, pero no terminaba de
cuajar. Para mí es superdifícil cantar en inglés. Tienes que cambiar el

one. We sat down with him at a hotel in Madrid to talk about this work
and just about anything else that might come up. Because Juanes talks
about everything. And he sticks his neck out. He sticks it really out there.
You deﬁne your new piece of work, Mis planes son amarte, as a visual
album. Why did you decide to make an album with this format?
When we ﬁnished recording in the studio, we felt there was really something about it and it deserved more than just a video for a song. We also
thought that nowadays people listen and see music on their phones and
thought it would be a good opportunity to try something like this. Americans like Beyonce and Metallica have already done it but not really in the
Latino world, so we wanted to take the trend there.
The ﬁrst single, Fuego, immediately went number one on the charts.
What is the ingredient for doing something big?
I don’t know. It’s such a strange thing... Sometimes you think a song is
going to be big and it’s not and then, the one you think won’t, turns out
to be so. But if you try to be on a positive vibe
when composing, that comes out in the music.
And it also depends on the fans.
In fact, it really depends on the fans because
they’re the ones that respond - the ones that
say yes or no. And when it comes to this, you
just have to follow your heart.
Right now there’s a generation of Colombian
musicians who are hitting it big: Shakira, Carlos Vives, Maluma, JBalvin… Why do you think
there’s this Colombian music boom?
Colombia had been shut down for quite some
time. There was a lot of talent, but no way to get
out and I think it’s thanks to Carlos Vives and
Shakira and pop music artists like Joe Arroyo
and Grupo Niche that we’ve gotten more opportunities. I also think the fact that Colombia
has been such a conﬂictive country and that it’s
full of history that it’s made people really creative. And not just musically, but also in literature, ﬁlm, sports... There’s a lot to tell.
You’re hesitant to sing in English, but you’ve
included a song in that language on this album. What made you do that?
There have been some previous experiments.
I’d sung before with Tony Bennet and have even
recorded my own songs in English, but it just
never ended up working. It’s really diﬃcult for
me to sing in English. You have to change the
way your muscles move, your air, your tongue

difícil porque yo pienso en español, pero trabajamos con un compositor
estadounidense y la canción quedó superchévere y decidimos incluirla.
¿Y aún así no te planteas hacer un disco entero en inglés?
No, yo no lo creo. Quizá haría otra canción o como mucho una o dos canciones en un disco, pero así, irme de lleno, no lo veo.
Cantando en español te has convertido en una estrella. Quizá para ti no
sea necesario cantar en inglés…
No es necesario. Es igual que cuando escuchas a Madonna o a Robbie Williams cantando en español, suenan raro. Quizá para Enrique Iglesias,
Ricky Martin o Mark Anthony, que son americanos y han nacido allí, es
más natural, para mí es más difícil. Pero me encanta la lengua inglesa y la
música en inglés, y estoy superorgulloso de esta canción.
Eres un artista comprometido. Creaste la Fundación Mi Sangre y cofundaste la organización Paz sin Fronteras. ¿El compromiso es una obligación de todo el que puede llegar al gran público?
No, la obligación es más para la persona, y es un compromiso para quien
lo siente. Si fuera una obligación viviríamos en otro mundo.

this case, it all came together. It’s quite diﬃcult for me to write in English because I think
in Spanish, but we worked with an American
composer and the song came out really awesome and we decided to include it.
And what about doing a whole album in English?
No, I don’t think so. Maybe another song or
one or two on an album at most, but I don’t see
myself going full speed ahead with it.
Singing in Spanish has made you a star. So maybe it’s not necessary for you to sing in English…
No, it’s not. It’s like when you hear Madonna or
Robbie Williams singing in Spanish; it’s seems
odd. Maybe for Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin
or Mark Anthony, who are Americans and were
born there, it’s more natural, but it’s more difﬁcult for me. But I love the English language
and music in English and I’m super proud of
this song.
You’re a committed artist. You created the My
Blood Foundation and co-founded the Peace
without Borders organization. Is committing
to charity an obligation for all those who can
reach the general public?
No, obligations lie more with the individual
person and it’s a commitment for those who
feel it. If it were an obligation, we’d be living in
a diﬀerent world.
You participated in the Peace Concert in honor
of the Nobel Peace Prize which this year went
to the President of Colombia, Juan Manuel
Santos. What does that Nobel Prize mean?

se lo otorgaron al presidente de Colombia, Juan
Manuel Santos. ¿Qué signiﬁca ese Nobel?
Para Colombia es especial, y es contradictorio
porque mi país en este momento está muy dividido. Es un momento raro. Hay tanta injusticia social, tanta desigualdad y tantas cosas que
de repente se pueden demorar junto con estos
acuerdos que quería estar allí y apoyar. Pero más
que al presidente, al proceso de paz de mi país.
Tú estabas a favor del sí al acuerdo de paz con
las FARC que había sobre la mesa y en el referéndum venció el no. Fue una sorpresa para
todos. ¿Qué es lo que ocurrió?
Lo que ocurrió es que la oposición es muy fuerte
y que por ambas partes hubo una gran desinformación y mucha confusión. La gente no sabía realmente qué era verdad y qué era mentira.
Había mucho temor también, porque el cambio siempre genera miedo y estamos hablando
de una reestructuración del país, de una nueva
Colombia. También hay mucho dolor, muchos
desaparecidos, desplazados… Es una historia
muy larga, de mucha dureza.
Creo que el tema del proceso de paz te ha supuesto, incluso, discusiones familiares.
Somos seis hijos y yo soy el único de la familia
milia
que está a favor. No es que mis hermanos o mi
mamá no estén a favor de la paz, sino que ellos
están con su partido político y siguen la tenndencia del expresidente Álvaro Uribe. En mi
caso no estoy ni con Uribe ni con Santos,,
simplemente estoy con la idea de que es necesario cambiar.
Has tenido la oportunidad de sentarte con

gente joven de las FARC. ¿Qué has visto?
Mucho dolor, rencor, miedo, desconﬁanzaa
del mundo real, por así decirlo, y con razón:

Ahí es donde yo veo que todos hemos sido
culpables de lo que vivimos en Colombia,

Uf, no lo puedo creer. Ha sido una sorpresaa
para todos, y lo que me parece más increíblee
es ver cómo se ha premiado la intolerancia,
la grosería y el racismo. Pero como dice
Obama, hay que darle una oportunidad.

For Colombia, it’s special and it’s contradictory because my country right now is truly divided. It’s a strange time. There’s so much social injustice, so much inequality and so many
things that can now be held oﬀ with these accords that I wanted to be there and support it
all. But more than the President, I wanted to
support the peace process in my country.
You were in favor of the peace agreement
with the FARC that was on the table and the
no vote won out. It was a surprise for everyone. What happened?
What happened was the opposition is very
strong and there was a lot of misinformation
and a lot of confusion from both sides. People
didn’t really know what was truthful and what
was a lie. There was also a lot of fear because
change always brings fear with it and we’re
talking about restructuring the country and
creating a new Colombia. There’s also a lot
of pain, a lot of people have disappeared and
been displaced... It’s a very long history and
very hard.
I believe the whole peace process issue has
even caused family disagreements.
There are six siblings in my family and I’m the
only one who’s in favor of it. It’s not that my
siblings or my mom’s not in favor of peace, it’s
just that they’re with their political party and
follow the trend set by former President Álvaro
Uribe. In my case, I’m not with Uribe or Santos.

Buﬀ! I can’t believe it. It was a surprise

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implemented a security programme
denominated “Secure Flight” which is compulsory under the authority of 49 U.S.C.
section 114, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 and 49
C.F.R parts 1540 and 1560. Which requires all airlines operating to the US to provide
the US Government the following information from their passengers: full name, date
of birth, gender and passport information. This regulations also applies to passengers
on ﬂights overﬂying US airspace. In case the required information is not provided,

«Mi primer contacto con el yoga fue a los
20 años. Yo iba al gimnasio a hacer spinning
y acabé en una clase de yoga. No fue un
ﬂechazo inmediato, pero me enganché del
todo la primera vez que fui a la India con
mi mochila. Tenía 33 años [ahora tengo 37].
Fui a un áshram a hacer yoga, meditación y
voto de silencio, y volví transformada. Me
hice profesora de yoga y empecé a estudiar
reiki, coaching, masaje ayurvédico… Con
todo eso doy una terapia que denomino
‘de unicidad’ con la que se consigue una
mejora emocional. Nunca he buscado
clientes; la gente me ha ido llegando por
amigos y conocidos, y que mejoren es el
mejor pago que puedo recibir. Eso me hace
sentir bien. Y me rijo por una máxima: ‘El
Universo siempre tiene reservado lo mejor
para ti’. Porque aunque creas que lo que te
está pasando es malo, cuando mires atrás
descubrirás que eso también era un regalo
para seguir tu camino». / «My ﬁrst contact

I was going to the gym to do spinning and
decided to join a yoga class. It wasn’t love
at ﬁrst sight, but I got hooked the ﬁrst time
I went to India with my backpack. I was 33

I came back transformed. I became a yoga
teacher and began studying Reiki, coaching,
Ayurvedic massage... With all that, I offer
therapy I call “uniqueness” which achieves

through friends and acquaintances and the
fact that they get better is the best payment
I could receive. It makes me feel good. And I
live by one maxim: ‘The Universe always has
the best reserved just for you’. Because even
though you may think that what you’re going
through is bad, when you look back later,
you’ll realize it all helped you out in the end.».
