Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)
Is 49:3, 5–6, 1 Cor 1:1–3, Jn 1:29–34
This fresco by Perugino, Michelangelo’s art teacher, is
found on the wall of the Sistine Chapel. Like the other
frescoes in this sacred space, this panel contains multiple
scenes. The central scene is the baptism of Jesus. The
viewer clearly sees Jesus standing in the water, with John
the Baptist next to him, pouring water over his head.
God the Father is above, ready to declare that this is
his beloved Son. The Holy Spirit comes down upon Jesus
in the form of a dove. It was the Spirit who helped John
know that this was the Messiah, the one sent by God to
baptize with the Holy Spirit.
After his baptism, Jesus is sent out to preach and teach.
The fresco reveals that Perugino has read his Bible: the
scene to the right Jesus is shown preaching to the multitudes. John the Baptist’s mission changes, too. He goes
from preparing for the coming of the Messiah to following and testifying about him. This is what the baptized do:
the new life we are given calls and strengthens us to offer
that new life to others.
At our baptism, we were sanctified, forgiven our sins,
incorporated into the body of Christ, and given a mission
to share this baptism with others. In fact, the last words of
Jesus before his ascension were, “Go, therefore, and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching
them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20).
For Reflection
How willing am I to share about Jesus and what he
means to me? Do I have family or friends in doubt about
baptizing their child? How can I kindly encourage them?

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ADULT FAITH FORMATION: A CONTINUING
CATECHESIS
A Summarized Presentation of the Catholic
Faith: Based on the Paulist Tradition
By: Merci J. Reynales
- The Old and the New Testaments
- Who Mary and Joseph Were to Jesus
-Revisiting: The Beginning of Jesus’ Life
Focus Questions:
What do we know about Jesus Christ?
What is so unique in his birth, in his life and of
those with him in his early years? On what is the
primary concern of the Gospel writers with Jesus?
_____________
The Gospel writers are concerned primarily with Jesus’ public teachings - - His message
through them to the world. But since the whole of
the gospels was written to tell us “something,”
the story of Jesus early years is well considered,
though briefly.
To recall, the life of Jesus begins with
the story of the angel coming to Mary which
brings out the divine origin of Jesus. Luke 1: 2638 gives an account of how God communicated
to Mary that she was to be the mother of the Savior, and she consented. She miraculously conceived Jesus Christ.
But (again) who is this Mary? Let’s go
back to the sacred Christian mysteries illustrated
by prophetic Old Testament situations. In here,
the angel’s greeting is linked to the prophecy of
Zephaniah (3: 14-20) in which God expresses His
love for the virgin, as the “daughter of Zion”, the
one who represents the best in the people. This
means God loves Israel and lives therein. Mary is
the new Ark of the Covenant, the place where
God dwells, for she too, is “overwhelmed by the
power of the Most High” as written in Exodus
4040:35
The Gospel of Luke emphasizes the virginal conception of Jesus by the question to the
angel: “How can this be, since I have no husband?” (1, 34), and the angel responded. Matthew
tells how Joseph’s doubts upon seeing Mary
pregnant were settled by a revelation that the
conception was miraculous (Matthew 1, 18-25).
Thus, validates the traditional Christian teaching:
Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, remained a virgin all her life. Joseph was the husband of Mary
and the foster- father of Jesus, They both lived
by faith, with all its mystery and obscurity for the
human mind. .
As we begin a new year, may we live like
the Holy Family - - Jesus, Mary and Joseph. May
we gradually grow in profound realization of the
mysteries surrounding the faith we together professed.

a Pre-Baptismal class the Wednesday before at 7:30 pm.

DID YOU KNOW?
Help children communicate by reading between the lines
When children express that something is
wrong at school or with other activities, it's
often the job of caregivers to read between
the lines to determine what's really going on.
They might say "I'm bored" and need your
guidance finding a better school-life balance
or engaging in more challenging academic
work. Ask them to give examples and to help
you understand what is going on. If the child
is still being vague, remind them that they
can tell you anything and that you'll listen
with an open mind. As parents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids
deal well with negative feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some
way, keeping an open line of communication
with kids will enable you to be their advocate.

WARNING!
Not all churches that use the words “Catholic” or
“Roman Catholic” in their title are in communion
with the Holy Father or under the jurisdiction of
the local Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles . Though lawfully calling themselves “Catholic” under
secular law”, some of these churches, have broken away
from the Roman. Catholic Church for various reasons.
It is not lawful for Roman Catholics to receive sacraments
in these churches, and does not fulfill one’s obligation by
attending their services. Furthermore, the sacrament received would, in most instances, be invalid.
Our Lady of Guadalupe on Carson Street in the City of
Carson, Holy Trinity on Woodruff Avenue in Long Beach
and St. Francis in Bell Gardens are churches located within the San Pedro Pastoral Region that fall within this category and are not a Roman Catholic Church. If you have
reason to doubt the authenticity of any church calling itself
“Catholic” please contact the Archdiocesan Catholic Center at 213) 637-7000 for verification.
PAGE THREE
THREE MISSIONS
Today we begin with one of the “servant
songs” from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic
of Jesus’ ministry of service. Isaiah’s mission is
not only to bring back the children of Jacob to
gather in Israel; it is also to be “a light to the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will
be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and
the basis of the new.
This Sunday we begin a series of readings
from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul
is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of
Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he
addresses this letter is also identified: it is part
of the universal church of God. The Corinthians
are called to holiness, as are all Christians.
Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord
was celebrated last Monday, today’s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The
reading emphasizes that Jesus “outranks” John:
his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus
accepts John’s baptism, even though it is he
himself who is the Lamb of God.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
As soon as Christmas ends, people begin planning
for Easter! Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum
was but a single liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter Sunday. The two days leading
up to the liturgy were days of fast, not only for the elect,
but for the church preparing to baptize them. A fifthcentury pope explained that the church imitated the
apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance,
were forbidden.
Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together,
and so eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for
Good Friday. This was the first step toward today’s
shape of the Triduum, and gradually new ideas were embraced, including the veneration of the cross and a simple Communion service. Interestingly, the Word remained central, since we know that in those days the
pope did not receive Communion at this liturgy, even
though the faithful had that option. In the other churches
of Rome, priests and people received Communion under
both species. Although the custom of Communion on
Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the Middle
Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly unraveled
and disappeared from parish life. Remember that there
were no seminaries in those days, and books were a rare
luxury. Most priests could only manage to celebrate a
simple “low” Mass, and few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest through the complex
forms. Holy Week remained important in private devotion, but for a time the liturgies virtually disappeared.

Y BENDICION VELAS
Jueves 2 de Febrero, 2017
En Misa de 6:30pm.
Presentar los niños al Templo fué en el Antiguo
Testamento un mandato legal, una obligación;
cuarto
de
los
Misterios
gozosos;

SABIA USTED?
negativos. Y, si están siendo maltratados de alguna
