Exhibit proposes reviving Coronación de los

Imagine using a form of
transportation in the air without
being congested through timeconsuming traffic — Thanks to
the University of Texas at San
Antonio (UTSA) Department of
Architecture, it is a possibility
for the future.
Dr. Antonio Petrov, assistant
professor of architecture at
UTSA, presented the exhibit
“1000 Parks and a Line in the
Sky: Broadway-Avenue of the
Future” on Oct. 27 at the In
stitute of Texan Cultures, 801
E. César E. Chávez Blvd. The
exhibit, continuing through
April 16, brings in a concept
for Broadway redevelopment
and revitalization of bringing
back sky rides, which many
remember riding from the 60s
into the 90s at the Zoo and the
Hemisphere Park during the
World Fair in 1968, into our
future.
Drawing on technology from
50 years in San Antonio’s
past, the UTSA Department
of Architecture and the exhibit
addresses public transportation
and place-making with a radi
cal model for redevelopment
and revitalization featuring a
modern sky ride and linear park
system. Spurred by the Mu
seum Reach and Pearl District
improvements, Dr. Petrov and
his “Think/Do Tank” propose a
strategy to activate other parts
of this once vibrant and boom
ing artery into downtown, creat
ing the next great urban avenue.
“The project started around
two years ago at Alamo
Heights,” Dr. Petrov told La
Prensa. “We did some research
at Alamo Heights and we were
looking at Broadway, the en
tire corridor, so transportation
quickly became evident that
it is an issue that we have to
analyze… we investigated pos
sibilities and options, and we
quickly figured out that light rail
and street cars are not a viable
option for Broadway Street. So,
we had two options, digging up
the ground or go to the air. The
ground was not an option.”
Nearly 50 percent of Broad
way’s urban landscape is
flanked by parking space while
nearly all spaces along the cor
ridor are tied to businesses,
leaving almost no public space
for people to gather. The proj
ect also proposes mapping
1000 unused interstitial spaces
and transforming them into a
sequence of dog parks, public
garden, walkways, dog parks,
recreational spaces and public
plazas.

2016 Heart & Stroke Walk to take place at Nelson Wolff Stadium
Special to La Prensa
The American Heart Asso
ciation’s 2016 Heart & Stroke
Walk will be held at Nelson
Wolff Stadium on Saturday,
Nov. 12, 2016. Last year,
approximately 10,000 people
came together to take a step
in fighting heart disease and
stroke – America’s No. 1 and
No. 5 killers.
The reality though, is that
up to 80 percent of heart dis
ease and stroke are prevent
able through making lifestyle
changes like eating better and
getting physically active. Even
walking is a major help; walk
ing as little as 30 minutes a day
can reduce your risk for heart
disease and stroke!
Each year, people join the
Heart & Stroke Walk to honor
someone they know and love.

ber, friend, co-worker or even
themselves, they walk to show
that heart disease and stroke
can be beaten. At this year’s
Heart & Stroke Walk, every
one will be able to share the
reasons why they walk and
why it is important to them
as part of the American Heart
Association’s “Life is Why”
campaign. There will be many
ways participants will be able
to share their “why” – why they
are walking and why they sup
port the work that the Ameri
can Heart Association does.
This year’s theme is, “Reveal
Your Inner Hero.” Participants
in both the 5K Heart Race

San Pedro Creek Plaza...
central de la futura San Pedro

La escultura, de 60 pies de
alto y de aluminio y revestimien

bre “Plethora” y será inaugurada
en mayo de 2018, año de la
celebración de los trescientos
años de San Antonio.
La plaza estará situada en
el origen histórico de San An
tonio, el lugar de la primera
Misión San Antonio de Valero.
Wolff señaló que el comité
seleccionador evaluó las 112
propuestas artísticas recibidas,
las cuales redujo, primero a 50
y luego a cuatro. Luego, los
miembros del comité conver
saron con los cuatro finalistas
y, finalmente, se decantaron
por la propuesta de Rodríguez
Gerada.
“Mientras que otros proyectos
ilustraban el agua, lo cual es
importante para el arroyo, esta
pieza de arte ilustra la cultura”,
dijo Wolff. Y añadió que la
escultura transformará la cara
del Westside del Downtown.
“El uso de la luz, el espacio y
la sombra representan la cone
xión humana con el arroyo”,
agregó el juez.

El creador de la futura escul

nació en Cuba y estudió en

trabajo artístico ha sido exhi

De acuerdo su hoja de vida en

Sobre “Plethora”, el artista
explica en su propuesta que será
una escultura cuyo significado

graduate students want San
Antonio to be energy efficient
in three phases.
The first phase would connect
all cultural markers into one
system including The DoSeum,
The Tobin Center and The Zoo,
which is estimated to take five
to six years to complete. Eventu
ally, the project would extend
to the third phase completing
the expansion all the way to
the airport.
The first thing Dr. Petrov has
on his agenda is to get the pub
lic informed about the project
and to have private funding for
his project. So far, those who
understand the concept of the
project stand by his proposal
100 percent.
“It has been overwhelming
and positive… we have had
great conversations, great dia
logue about it from all age
groups… to connect the notion
of nostalgia because people re
member from the 60s through
the 90s, and this is our goal,”
continued Dr. Petrov.
In the meantime, Dr. Petrov
would like for individuals to
come to the exhibit to interact
and expect a learning experi
ence that will have you up in
the air. Only time will tell if the
project will successfully come
through.
“As an architect, you imagine
something and then you present
a project of how we have done
it… giving the opportunity to
actively engage with the view
ers is great. So we brought the
gondola where you can take a
picture into the future and into
the past, put yourself into this
spot to engage with the history
and the future,” concluded Dr.
Petrov.

Alamo Colleges approves tuition incentive plan
Special to La Prensa
The Alamo Colleges’ Board
of Trustees have approved a
new Fast Completion Incen
tive Plan to encourage stu
dents to complete their degree
in less time so that they save
money and use their financial
aid more effectively.
The plan gives students who
earn 18-24 credit hours in the
fall 2016 and spring 2017
terms three to six free credit
hours in the summer semes
ter. Students who earn a total
of 24 credit hours in the fall
2016 and spring 2017 (9+15
or 12+12) receive up to six
free credit hours in the sum
mer, allowing them to earn
the 60 hours needed for their
degree in just two years at a
tuition savings of $186.
Students who earn a total of
18 credit hours in the fall and
spring (9+9 or 6+12) receive
three free credit hours in the
summer, allowing them to
complete in three years at a
tuition savings of $141. The
free summer credit hours must
be taken in the summer term
immediately following the fall
and spring term which qualify
the student for the incentive
plan.
“As part of our ongoing
strategies to maximize student
success, this plan will encour
age students to take more
courses in the fall and spring,
and to take summer courses as
well, allowing them to com
plete their education at the
Alamo Colleges in less time,
which will save them money
in tuition and allow them to
transfer to a university or enter
the workforce more quickly,”
said Alamo Colleges Chancel
lor Dr. Bruce Leslie.
The plan was approved
after student surveys and
focus groups indicated that

Special to La Prensa
Nov. 1-23 marks San An

Bank (SAFB).
It’s a great chance to get
fit, give back and feel good
this Thanksgiving season by
bringing two nonperishable
food items to the San Antonio
Natatorium in lieu of the ad
mission fee. The San Antonio
Natatorium (1430 W. Cesar

ming throughout the year
providing opportunities for
fun, exercise and family time.
In FY2015, the San Antonio
Food Bank provided nearly
62 million pounds of food to
more than 530 partner agen
cies in 16 counties through
out Southwest Texas. Their
mission is to fight hunger in
Southwest Texas through food
distribution, programs, edu
cation, and advocacy. Some
36 percent of their clients are
children, under the age of 18
years old.
Last year’s San Antonio

ment hopes to increase that
amount this year.

the majority of students were
interested in such an incen

the number of students who

Mexican Grand Prix delivers
excitement and drama on the track
By Jorge Mendoza
Former San Antonio
Grand Prix racer
The second Mexican Grand
Prix turned out to be one of the
best grand prix of the season for
the second year in a row.
2015 was the return of the
Formula 1 on Mexican soil.
Once again, crowds were emo
tional and loud. The racing
itself was better than 2015 due
to close racing incidents that
got the crowds on their feet.
Nico Rosberg was pleased
to see how Mexican fans have
embraced the sport calling them
“the best fans of the world”
during the post-race press con
ference.
He finished second behind
Lewis Hamilton, who is still
hungry for more champion
ships and will try to do the best
to take the championship away
from Rosberg; they are both
driving for the Mercedes Team.
Sebastian Vettel, from Fer
rari, performed better than his
2015 race in Mexico and he
finished third. He was running
fourth when he battled for the
third position with Max Ver
stappen. This chase made the
race more exciting during the
last part.
Vettel had a good pace as he
pressured Verstappen with the
intermediate tires that had more
lasting laps than Verstappen’s.

few seconds after the race. This
penalty caused Verstappen to
lose his third place.
Before the last 10 laps, Dan
iel Ricciardo had an even bet
ter pace chasing Vettel, so the
Ferrari driver was squeezed by
the two Red Bulls. Ricciardo
had the pace to pass Max and
Vettel together, but a controver
sial incident took place among
those three drivers where Vettel
blocked the entry of Ricciardo
while braking.
This incident was reviewed
again by the chief marshal
after the race ended, and they
decided that maneuver was
not legal. After the podium
celebration, the chief director of
racing made a full review of the
incident, and the final results
were posted two hours later
granting Ricciardo with a third
place finish, Verstappen was
granted fourth and Vettel fifth.
Of course, the Ferrari team was
not happy with the decision
of taking the third place away
from them in this fashion.
Mexican driver Sergio Perez
had a great race fighting for
position with both Williams
drivers. Williams had the best
top speed among all the cars in
the field, and it made it difficult
for Perez to overtake. Esteban
Gutierrez, the second Mexican
driver in the field, did not have
the day he was expecting in
front of his crowd.
Team Haas struggled all
weekend long with both cars.
In summary, it was a great
weekend for the sport. Great

Rampage por nueva racha contra rivales de California
Por José I. Franco
[email protected]
conducto de su alero derecho titu
lar Sean Backman, anotó par de
goles contra el arquero Spencer
Martin para darle la victoria de 4
a 2 a su equipo, que es sucursal
del club Kings de Los Ángeles
(NHL).
Backman anotó su primer gol
asistido por su compañero Jonny
Brodzinski. Y su segundo tanto al
minuto final en el que la portería
de Rampage se encontraba sin ar
quero, dejando tendidos sobre el
rink a la tropilla comandada por
Veilleux y su entrenador asistente
Randy Ladouceur.
Por San Antonio anotaron
goles el alero derecho Mike Sislo
y el defensor Sam Jardine.
“Nos habíamos propuesto ga
nar este partido para llegar al pro
medio de .500. La derrota duele,
pero nos servirá de experiencia
para los siguientes partidos. Para
mí fue emocionante empatar el
partido (2-2); sin embargo, tengo
que seguir adelante mejorando
mi estilo de juego”, dijo Jardine.
“Fue un partido de altura. Se
jugó contundente hockey. Tuvi
mos oportunidades de remontar
el marcador, no se logró y ahora
no queda más que comenzar una
nueva racha de gira. Haber ga
nado tres partidos de gira me hizo
feliz. Sé que nuestros jugadores
hicieron todo lo posible porque
nos fuera bien jugando fuera de
San Antonio. Así se hizo y ahora
con la derrota volvemos a entrar
de lleno en los entrenamientos
para superar fallas y hacer mejo
res decisiones”, apuntó Veilleux.
Rampage visitará a equipos en
la Conferencia del Oeste (división
Pacífico).
La primera visita será este miér
coles 2 de noviembre contra los
Condors de Bakersfield (sucursal
del club Oilers de Edmonton/
NHL).
El sábado 5 y domingo 6 Ram
page sostendrá partidos contra
Barracuda de San José (sucursal
de Sharks/NHL).
El miércoles 9 pagarán visita
al Reign.
El 11 y 12 se medirán ante el
Heat de Stockton (sucursal de
Flames de Calgary/NHL) para
retornar al AT&T Center y el
martes 15 jugar partido matutino
(10:30 a.m.) contra Barracuda,
en lo que será encuentro dedicado
a estudiantes denominado “Cool
Day School with the Rampage”.
Rampage, que había perdido
sus primeros cuatro partidos
locales en el AT&T Center
contra Admirals de Milwaukee
y Wolves de Chicago, en su
primera gira del rol regular en
la liga American Hockey League
(AHL) logró tres importantes vic
torias, con lo que iniciaban racha
triunfadora que los ubicaría por
el sendero del éxito.
Sin embargo, el domingo 30
de octubre durante su partido
vespertino contra el visitante
Reign de Ontario (California), de
local, no pudo concretar cayendo
con pizarra de 4 a 2 goles.
Poco le duró el gusto a Eric
Veilleux, timonel en jefe, ya que
en sus primeros tres partidos de
gira logró superar a sus rivales
Stars de Texas (sucursal del
club Stars de Dallas afiliado a
la NHL), al que derrotaron en
el H-E-B Center de la ciudad de
Austin, con marcador de 4-2,
encuentro en el que el arqu
ero Spencer Martin sobresalió

siendo apoyado por el capitán
Joe Whitney y sus compañeros,
Mike Sislo, J.T. Gopher, Jim
O’Brien y Julien Nantel, quienes
(Foto, Franco)
