SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 24, 2016
Pastor’s Corner:
Persevere in Prayer
Why is my prayer not answered? Why does it seem that God does not hear my
pleas and supplications? I am terribly suffering and why am I not relieved from pain inspite my devotions and prayers? I did nothing wrong and am a good person but why does
God not listen to my prayers? I THINK THIS IS NOT WORKING!
These are just some of the many questions we ask when frustration gets the best
of us. Worst, life goes downhill when this experience hit us. We are lost and confused,
we feel abandoned and neglected. But while discouragement comes as a natural reaction
to prayers apparently unanswered, the virtue of perseverance in prayer comes to us also
as a powerful response, if not the ultimate solution, to feeling destitute and isolated. Sadly, however, most of the times the latter never comes easy because the obstacles to persevering in prayer are just as intimidating to face, if not senseless to some, as the experience of hopelessness itself. And what are the obstacles to persevering in prayer?
First is impatience. When we pray, we often want to have the answer here and now! Indeed, desperate circumstances necessitate desperate and immediate answers. But sometimes God does not act that way. Sometimes our
prayers are positively responded but sometimes not. And if our prayers are not answered the way we expect them to
be, it should not be a reason for us to claim that prayer does not work. Someone commented that all our prayers are
answered, only that they are answered in three different ways: 1.) YES, if what we ask befits us right here and now;
2.) NO, if what we ask is not right for us here and now; 3.) LATER, if what we ask befits us but it is not yet right for
us to receive the answer here and now.
Second is losing the enthusiasm to pray. The attitude of persevering in prayer does not happen overnight. It
is rather achieved and made a part of one’s nature through constant and focused attention to prayer. Prayer is not like
something that we keep in our closet or bags when we do not need it and bring it out when we are in need of it. The
attitude towards prayers should be persevering and faithful because such exercise will create in us a certain confidence that prayer works. People who are seen as men of prayer are people who constantly pray in season or out of
season, good times or difficult times, healthy or ill. What gives them the perseverance to pray even during the most
trying and hard times is the conviction which they acquired over time that prayer works.
Third is not having faith in prayer itself. This is the most damning of all obstacles because when one loses
faith in prayer, faith in God who is the source of all answers to our hopelessness, frustrations, problems, sufferings
and pains, inevitably falls out. Prayer is our natural conduit with God and where else can we reach out to him and
surrender all our worries and problems if we do not believe in the power of prayer. Losing faith in prayer may have
been caused by unanswered pleas and supplications but God has almost always better answers to our needs and struggles and that is the reason why we need to keep on praying and having faith in Him. His ways are not our ways and
we need to be convinced that He knows what He is doing.
Our first and gospel readings this Sunday remind us about the benefit of persevering in prayer. They highlight the importance of keeping faith in God in the face of formidable adversaries and obstacles in life. God knows
all our needs and He answers them accordingly. We just need to trust, believe and never give up praying. Finally, I
hope you will enjoy this short poem about putting faith in God and in our prayer:
There’s no problem too big and no question too small,
Just ask Jesus in faith and He’ll answer them all.
It’s not always at once, so be patient and wait,
For our Lord never comes too soon or too late.
So just trust in His love and believe in His word,
For no plea is ignored and no prayer is unheard.
God Bless!!!!!

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests; For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests
dearest to me: The priest who baptized me; The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy
Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me; All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way (especially________). O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity. Amen (By St. Therese of Lisieux )
Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.”
(1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV)
Daily Prayer for Vocations Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your
people, Priests with hearts like your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

dolor a pesar mis devociones y oraciones?

760.749.3324. Las clases empiezan en agosto.
