Moses tells us that God's law is
very near to us, already in our
mouths and hearts--in our very
DNA, we might say. But
sometimes we feel lost,
confused, and exhausted.
Although God imprints the law
in our hearts, we don't always
know confidently how to
behave in certain situations.
And then there are the times
when we probably do know the
wisest, most loving course of
action, but we make unhealthy
choices. Jesus knows this, and
loves us anyway. He tells us
the parable of the good
Samaritan to encourage us.
The scholar of the law questioning Jesus describes the Samaritan
as one who acts "with mercy." He is a perceptive scholar, and Jesus
approves of his responses. Like the scholar, we recognize goodness
when we see it. But sometimes we push goodness to the margins of
our lives, reserving it for Sundays or special occasions. God's law,
filled with goodness and mercy, cannot be confined. During this
Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are reminded that our call is to act with
mercy at all times, at home, in business, online, and in daily
interactions with people we might not like all that much or who
treat us badly. "Go and do likewise," Jesus tells us. We can have
complete confidence that Jesus will give us the strength we need.

EXCUSES, EXCUSES
If you get pulled over for speeding, you might have several excuses to use,
but did you ever say that you didn't know you had to obey the speed limit?
As the saying goes, ignorance of the law is no excuse. That is what Moses is
telling the people in the first reading. The laws of God are not difficult to
understand. Anyone with a conscience should be able to live with them.
By the time of Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees had added many more laws.
The scholar who questioned Jesus about eternal life knew what was
important: loving God with all your being and loving your neighbor as
yourself. If he had stopped there, he would have been all right. But by
asking "Who is my neighbor?" he implied that there are limits to love. That's
why Jesus used the parable of the good Samaritan to show that love is as
simple as helping someone in need.
Even today, we find people making excuses for not doing what God asks of
us. We want someone else to interpret it for us, hoping they will find a
loophole we can use to ignore God's commands. We judge people who need
help, saying they choose to be poor or homeless. We say that between work
and family obligations, we have no time to give to the community. We sign
our kids up for so many sports that we don't even go to church on Sundays.
We always have time to watch our favorite TV shows, but there's never
enough time for daily prayers.
Before you start beating yourself up with guilt, remember that God expects
us to take care of our families, to spend time with our children, and even to
take time to rest and relax. If we are willing to look at our lives and bring
them to God, asking for guidance, we are making the first steps to keep
God's law of love. Even Jesus, whom Paul describes in the second reading as
the image of God and source of all creation, had to die on the cross to show
God's love to the world. Jesus understands the difficult choices we make.
Ask for his help and you shall receive.

Faith Formation
“Safeguarding the Dignity Of Every Human Person”
Religious Education Open Enrollment Closed
Our Religious Education year has come to a
successful end!
In preparation for 2016-17, we need
additional volunteers (men and women) to
be catechists, especially for the older
children in Levels 6, 7 and 8.
Catechists MUST have the following to join
this ministry:

a basic knowledge of our faith

have a strong moral code

have humility (this is God’s work, not our
own)

affirm students

do not limit God

point always to Christ

have courage

look at people as Jesus did (as equals
with compassion, love and forgiveness)

encounter Christ in the Liturgy

show others where to look for God (in
traditions
and
sacraments,
prayer,
despair and joy).
You have the criteria. Think about choosing
to serve our children as we teach them
about the Kingdom of God.
Have a spectacular summer!

BULLETIN REFLECTION
“The good Samaritan was also a good
steward, giving his time and his treasure to
meet his neighbor’s need. At the end of this
familiar story, Jesus urges his hearers - and
us - to go and do the same!
LIVING STEWARDSHIP
We are grateful this week for all stewards

God’s mercy visible in this world through
their willingness to forgive and make
sacrifices for a stranger.

In today’s Gospel, when Jesus asks “which of
these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the
robbers’ victim?” The scholar of the law answered,
“the one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus then
said, “Go and do likewise.”
This week you can also “treat the poor
