Professional Learning Communities or PLCs are a focus and commitment on learning of
each student according to Richard and Rebecca DuFour in their book, Learn by Doing, A
Handbook for Professional Learning Communities at Work. Members or teachers in this
case, work together to clarify exactly what each student must learn, monitor each student’s
learning on a timely basis, provide systematic interventions that ensure students receive
additional time and support for learning when they struggle, and extend and enrich learning
when students have already mastered the intended outcomes. PLCs are dedicated to the
idea that their organization exists to ensure that all students learn essential knowledge,
skills, and dispositions.

How does this impact me as a parent? The Arcadia School District has been operating
using PLCs for the past six years. While we have made many gains we continue to have
challenges with time and meeting schedules for our instructors. The past two years all of
our high school staff has had their PLC time during Wednesday morning late starts. The
high school staff would meet in their departments or grade levels from 7:45-8:30 weekly.
Common discussions would include: What is it we believe all students should know and

learn? How will we know if students have learned? What are strategies to use when a student does not do well on
test? What do we do for students who do very well on tests? This collaborative meeting time was valuable and
allowed for more intervention and enrichment ideas for students.
Elementary-PLC time in the elementary school is now held during prep times or before or after school. The
challenge now is that all the elementary teachers do not have the same prep times and therefore, various
stakeholders cannot all meet at the same time. During the 2016-17 PLC Wednesdays, all instructors will be
available to meet 7:45-8:30. All students will report to school at the normal time. The K-4 students will be supervised
by paraprofessionals and will get extended reading, recess, breakfast, or grade level activities. The 4K and Pre-K
will run as normal.
Middle School-The middle school staff is presently in the same situation as the elementary in regards to PLC
meeting times. During the next school year all middle school students will continue to report to school at regular
times. The students will be assigned to various areas for attendance, study times, breakfast, or gym time. The will
be supervised by paraprofessionals. There will also be opportunities for grade level or building level presentations or
activities during this time.
High School-During this PLC time (every Wednesday) the high school students did not have to report to school
until 8:30 for their first period class. All classes were still held those days but were shortened by approximately 4
minutes. The students that rode the buses and came early reported to the library or commons where they were
supervised by paraprofessionals and the building principal quite often. The students socialized, studied, or ate
breakfast while they waited for first period to start. The students who drove, walked, or had someone else drive them
to school could do the same thing as bus students or they could report to class by first hour. For the 2016-17 school
year we will require freshmen to report to school by 7:55 and go to an area for attendance after which they can go to
library or commons area for study hall and/or breakfast. All other students in high school have the option to come by
first period or report to commons or library while they wait for first hour. This gives the freshmen time to get
acclimated, provides tome for some grade level meetings, and gives them an extra study period once per week. All
grade 10-12 students will need parent permission forms completed if they will be arriving after 7:55 on PLC
Wednesdays. Those permission forms will be available at the start to the 2016-17 school year.
There will not be monthly early release scheduled for next year either, with the exception of the day before
Thanksgiving. The inservice days for professional development and work time will be full days where students do
not attend. Also, the 12 minute breakfast break for middle and high school students will be during the PLC time for
the students to minimize loss of class time later in the day. At the Arcadia School District we highly value PLC time
and we know the difficulties of child care so this is the plan for the 2016-17 school year. We will hold a public
forum on this topic on Wednesday, May 18 th at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. At that time we can
answer and all questions related to PLCs. Students will actually have more instructional time with this new
schedule change.

Greetings from the new Elementary School Counselor
I’d like to introduce myself for those of you who don't
know me. My name is Ryan Schmidt, the new School Counselor in the Elementary School. Since I started back in
January, I haven't had a chance to properly give parents
and members of the community a few moments to get to
know ‘the new guy.’ I am hoping to be able to give some of
you a snippet of what brought me to this wonderful community.
My professional background stems from graduating
from Winona State University in 2014 with my Masters degree in Counselor Education: K-12 School Counseling. Most
recently, I was the School Counselor in Caledonia, Minnesota as the 5-12 School Counselor. Before that I was a Special Education EBD paraprofessional at La Crescent, Minnesota Elementary School for 3 years. I also took part in an
internship at Viking Elementary in Holmen, Wisconsin.
While I made the most of my time in Caledonia, I knew
working with Elementary age students was always where
my heart was and I wanted to get back into working with
younger students, which is essentially what brought me
here!
A little background about my personal life... I grew up
on a dairy farm south of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, but I
currently live in La Crosse with my beautiful wife of 5 years,
Kirsten and two rambunctious, lovable boys, Isaiah (4) and
Anders (1). In case any of you were curious, I am an avid
Packers, Badgers, Brewers, and Bucks fan. Go Pack Go! In
my free time, I enjoy playing with my 2 boys, reading, playing euchre, playing golf, fishing, camping, hiking and pretty
much anything outdoors.
With that being said, I want everyone to know how
excited I am to be here working at Arcadia Elementary! If
you have any questions or want to know more about what I
do, please feel free to shoot me an email at
[email protected] or phone call (608) 323-7500
x2191 so we can talk. Most importantly, my door is always
open in continuing toward striving to meet the academic,
social/emotional, and career exploration needs of our students!
Best Regards, Ryan Schmidt
Digital Art -- Bringing Technology and Fine Arts Together
Each day students in Susie Schlosstein's Digital Art
class get to combine their artistic and creative sides with
technology to communicate ideas through creative expression.
In its second year as a course at Arcadia Middle
School, students in this course have their hands on an Ipad
or digital camera as the create
artwork that ranges from digital
animation of cartoon characters to a reproduction of "The
Great Wave off Kanagawa"
"Art and the digital world
are found everywhere, from
photography, movie production, graphic design and to
hundreds of other careers that
require a fusing of technology
and creative skills," said MS Art
Teacher Susie Schlosstein. "
Our students are getting the
chance to have some real

world experiences with how these tools are used in so many
of the things they see every day."
Mrs. Schlosstein's course is available as an elective to
7th and 8th graders at Arcadia Middle School.

Donations Accepted—Reading Materials
Due to the continuing school and community
contributions of product label UPCs, our district is able to
redeem UPC points for books, videos, and equipment for
our schools. Keep ‘em coming!

Thank you again, for all you do for this project that
allows us to redeem Campbell Labels for Education for

Collect UPCs over the summer and send them to
school with your student if he or she is taking summer
school classes, or save them up until fall! Remember that
we cannot use just the front labels any longer. Labels for

Seniors:
*If you plan to attend college in Minnesota you may apply for reciprocity online at heab.wi.gov.
*If you have received any scholarships outside of school, please give the office a copy of the award letter by May 1 st.
We would like to recognize you at our Awards Night.
*Seniors planning on playing Division I or Division II sports in college need to register with the clearinghouse at
www.eligibilitycenter.org
*Most financial aid deadlines have past for colleges; however, if you have not yet filled out the FAFSA you should still do
so. For more information contact the counseling office.
Juniors:
*If students are considering continuing their education beyond high school, they should be taking the ACT or other
Assessment tests applicable to the schools they are looking into.
*ACT is required for: 4 year college admission, Technical college nursing programs, and can be used for technical
college admission. Technical Colleges often have other assessment tests. Contact the individual college for more
information.
*Go to www.actstudent.org for more information or to register.
*Juniors should consider going on Campus Visits to colleges or universities of interest this summer. A key part of
deciding which college to go to is finding a good fit. And a great way to get more information is to visit the colleges in person.
Free ACT Prep available at: www.actstudent.org and www.knowhow2gowisconsin.org
Pre-College Summer Programs These programs are offered at the UW campuses and cover a wide array of subjects
from computer to basketball camps, from music and art to cheerleading and study skills. They are offered for varying age

Middle School Volleyball
We will be starting open gyms for middle school
volleyball the week of August 15th at the middle school
gym. We will run the open gyms from 8:00 to 10:00 am
each day. All girls entering the 7th and 8th grades are welcome to attend. The week of August 22nd we will be starting practice and practice time will be 3:30-5:30pm. Practice
time could change depending on the girl’s schedules. In
order to participate in practice all girls in 7th grade and any
new 8th graders need to have a physical (8th graders who
participated in sports last year will need an alternate year
card). Everyone will need the athletic code and concussion
form signed by themselves as well as a parent/guardian and
also show proof of insurance. These papers can be picked
up in the middle school office. The sooner the papers get
into the office the less we have to worry about in August. If

Jump Rope for Heart
On February 12th, 2016, Arcadia Elementary School
hosted their 9th annual Jump Rope for Heart event with
approximately 560 students participating. Not only does
this program raise money for those people struggling with
heart disease but it teaches our students to help others in
need and at the same time promotes physical activity which
all children and adults need.
A huge thank you also goes out to Kwik Trip for water
bottle donations and to McDonald’s for bags of apples for
each student. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s help with
this event!
Mrs. Sobotta and Mrs. Gray
2016 Jump Rope for Heart
This year our students raised $12,654.83. The chart
here shows students who raised $150.00 or more. We applaud the Kindergartners for having the highest percentage
of students raising money for the SECOND year in a row
(65%), the First graders for raising the most money as a
grade level ($2,933.32), and Mrs. Rumpel’s 5th grade class
for raising the most money as a single class ($1,016.00).

Local Author at AHS
Paul Jereczek, an alumnus of AHS, returned to Mrs.
Klein’s classroom to speak about his writing ambition and
the process of creating and publishing a book. He was an
inspiration because he is a local talent who is showing what
hard work and determination can produce. His recently
published book is a historical mystery and is entitled The
Whispers of Dead Elms. Mrs. Klein was his teacher at Arcadia Catholic School. Mr. Jereczek, his wife, and their
three children live and farm in the Dodge area.
Shakespeare Acting Workshop
Students at AHS welcomed Stephanie Lambourn and
Jessica Shoemaker, professionals from the Great River
Shakespeare Festival (Winona), and were privileged to
work with them for two half-days this past March. They
were involved in interpreting text and acting out scenes from
Romeo and Juliet. We hope to be able to offer this unique
experience to others in the future.
Participating students were: Ashley Aguilar, Julio Colin,

Swimming Lessons/Horarios de Lecciones de Natación
Question: What should I look for in a children's swimming class?
Answer: In addition to boosting your child's self-confidence and providing a great form of fun and exercise, learning to swim is a vital
survival skill. A good program teaches much more than how to get across the pool — it teaches your child how to be safe in and
around water, whether it's at a pool, lake, beach, or water park. That's why it's so important to do a little research before enrolling him
in a swim program. It's important to understand, too, that kids don't learn to swim in just a few lessons — it takes lots of time and
plenty of practice.
If your child hasn't been around water much or is extremely fearful of water, it's a good idea to sign up for a parent-and-child swim
class first, or at least take a few recreational dips together in the shallow end of your local pool.
Swimming and water safety for young children
Many young children love being in or around water, whether it’s a backyard pool or a local beach. But without proper safety measures,
water can be dangerous for young children. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death among children aged one to four years.
Babies and toddlers drown most often at home, either in bathtubs or swimming pools.
Will swim lessons help protect my child in the water?
Swimming lessons for children younger than four years of age aren’t effective at preventing drowning. At this age, children aren’t old
enough to learn water safety, or how to react in an emergency situation. All young children, especially preschoolers, should be supervised by an adult when they are around water.
When can my child take swimming lessons?
There isn’t much research on exactly when young children are ready to learn how to swim. At least one study says that children don’t
have the skills they need to swim until they are four years old, even if the lessons started at a younger age. Children should be at least
four years old before they take part in formal swimming lessons. If you want to get your young child involved in other organized water
activities, look for programs that help build confidence in your child and educate you about water safety.
Water safety tips

Never leave your child alone near water, whether it’s a pool or the bathtub. Children can drown in as little as 4 cm (1½
inches) of water.

Home swimming pools should be surrounded on all sides by gates that are self-closing and self-latching from the inside. The gate
latch should be above the reach of children and locked when not in use.




Government-approved personal flotation devices should be used by all young children and other children who cannot swim.
Toddlers and infants should be within an arm’s length of an adult when they’re around water (pools, bathtubs, beaches, etc).
Infants who are placed in water must be held by an adult at all times.
Parents and pool owners should get training in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

April was Autism Awareness Month
Arcadia Elementary and Middle School celebrated
Autism Awareness Month the week of April 4 - 8th. Each
day students in the middle school had an opportunity to
answer trivia questions. The trivia questions are as follows.
1).What month is Autism Awareness? April
2).TV shows depicting characters with Autism?
Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, Max from Parenthood,
Sonya Kross from The Bridge
3).What causes autism? This is the million dollar
question. There is no known single cause for autism
spectrum disorder, but it is generally accepted that it is
caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function.
Research is being done to find the cause of autism. What is
important to know is that autism is NOT contagious. You
can't catch it from someone who is on the autism spectrum.
Autism is a spectrum disorder which means there are many
different varying levels of autism. No two people with autism
are alike and neither is their disABILITY. Remember, people
with disABILITIES can learn too, they just learn differently.
4). What are things that you can do to help people with
Autism? Many things. You can be a good friend and
welcome them in your group or activity. Accept them for
who they are. People with autism benefit from routine,
visuals, and simple language.
5) Name 2 movies that feature a person with autism:
Rainman, I am Sam, Forest Gump, What's Eating Gilbert
Grape, Mercury Rising and many others
Congratulations to the following WINNERS: Tyson
Ely, Aundrea Severson, John Reyes, Erick Gomez, and
Nolan Niemierowicz. They all received prizes.
A special shout out goes to Tyson Ely for
answering the question every single day!
Middle School Drama Production
Boopner (played by Olivia Mooney) with the
help of Bailiff (played Mikaela Lisowski).
Percival S. Wolf (played by Dakota
Tuma) stands accused of pushing Humpty
Dumpty off the wall near the king’s castle.
Humpty, who has survived the famous fall
with injuries, tells a forlorn tale of persecution
by Wolf throughout his childhood years.
The Arcadia Middle School Drama class will present
their 2nd Semester theatrical extravaganza entitled Hooray
for Justice! by Renee Clark on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at
7:00 p.m. in the Arcadia High School Auditorium. There is
no admission charge, but donations will be greatly
accepted.
Hooray for Justice! tells of the story, which parodies
tabloid television and courtroom drama, and includes
familiar fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters. Herwaldo
Kimera, host of OUTSIDE EDITION (played by Jose
Corona Acosta), brings you the “outside dirt on the inside
story’ as the audience becomes the jury in the case of La-La
Land vs. Percival S. Wolf presided by Judge Bonnie
14
Witnesses for the prosecution led by attorney
Mary Payson (played by Aundrea
Severson), include one of the King’s Men –
Woodrow Solider who was the first at the
scene, Dorky Pig (played by Emily Rath),
and the very flakey Fairy Godmother, Wanda.
Mr. Wolf, who claims he is innocent and has
reformed his deviant ways, is defended by his
cousin Benny Padlock (played by Mia
Applebee). Padlock calls two of the dwarfs,
Sneezy and Doc Little (played by Carol
Mora), to the stand, as well as Goldie Goose,
who actually gave birth to Humpty many years ago.
As the witnesses testify to the motive and means of the
crime, the trial builds to a fantastic finish that puts – oh now
you don’t think I would spoil the ending????, now do
you????
The drama students will not only act on stage, they are
also in charge of all back stage production work as well. So
please accept Director, Mrs. Lisa S. Schock and the entire
casts’ invitation for a short and entertaining evening
on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. to see the middle
school drama students in action with their presentation
of Hooray for Justice! Hope to see you there!
AHS Stage – Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In
Arcadia High School Masquers
proudly presented the sketch
comedy variety show Rowan &
Martin’s Laugh-In by Ed Friendly
and George Schlatter on April 1
and April 2, 2016 in the Arcadia
High Auditorium.
Rowan & Martin’s LaughIn took the audience on a
rollercoaster ride filled with laughter
at every turn. Based on the TV
smash hit that premiered in 1968
and garnered an 83% national
rating, Laugh-In gave us
such memorable sayings as "very
interesting," "look that up in your
Funk and Wagnalls," "sock it to
me," "You bet your Sweet Bippy,"
"Here Comes The Judge!," "It’s
Time to Say Goodnight Dick," as
well as many others, that proved to
be unlike any variety show that ever
graced television. This unique sketch comedy, a modern
day SNL of the 60’s, was a fast moving barrage of jokes,
one-liners, run-on skits, and musical numbers while poking
fun at social and political issues. The cast of characters will
not be soon forgotten for their impeccable timing and
comedic punch lines:
hosts, Dan Rowan(Michael
Sonsalla) and Dick Martin (Briar Golden), Gary
Owens (Aaron Haines) as the announcer, Judy
Carne (Marissa Bartelt) the "Sock it to Me" girl, Artisa
Johnson (Henrietta Siemens) as the German soldier who
spouted "very interesting" or frumpy Gladys played by Ruth
Buzzi (Rachel McKay).
And don’t forget Goldie
Hawn (Perla Donjuan) as the blonde dingbat as well as
Henry Gibson (Julio Colin) who usually recited poetry and
Jo Anne Worley (Becca Weltzien) with her loud singing
voice.
Other cast members and specialty acts
included: Chelsea Brown playing the Preacher (Ashley
Aguilar), Sammy Davis Jr. as the Judge (Xavier Elena),
Alan Sues the Maharishi (Jacob Sonsalla), Larry Hovis the
quintessential hippy (Felix Ulloa), Karen Carpenter (Faith
Siewert), Pamela Rodgers the cool cobbler (Maria
Bicalho), Eileen Brennan as Yogi (Rossellin Gaitan), and
the famous Dion Francis DiMucci (Ryan Wozney).
Director Mrs. Lisa S. Schock headed up the acting
ensemble that also doubled as the production work crew
from props, to costumes, to publicity, to scenery and
everything else in between.
The hard working crew
consisted of: Special Helper Jayden Miller, Costumes/
Make-up/Ads Lexi Haines, Sound Jolene Servais,
Lights Robert McKay, Videographer Tanner Semb,
Tickets Esmeralda Salgado, Hannah Hoesley, & Maria
Romero-Donjuan, and Usher Adriana DeMar & Sara
Gallagher. Thank you Arcadia High School students for
sparkling on the stage for all to see. And THANK YOU
Arcadia for your fine arts support – for you are truly more!
