Técnicamente perfecta y de lectura apasionante, El túnel excede el negativismo ácido de Sartre

maestros literarios la impronta genial que hace de la escritura una radiografía del alma
atormentada.

Poncho: El túnel is a book about existentialism; it's about solitude, life, a shyness that is
criminally vulgar; it's a story told by Juan Pablo Castel, a man who kills the woman for whom he
fell in love with — well, I wouldn't say it was love, but rather mere curiosity. Personally, I felt quite
connected with the narrator when it comes to shyness and how he spent most of his time
making out anxious possibilities concerning social interaction. Like him, I'm not like to be
surrounded with people who do the same things I do for a living. Therefore, like him, I usually
spend my time alone; but sometimes I can't help it feel attracted to some people. However, like I
said, I wouldn't say it's out of love, but out of curiosity for someone who seem to share that
shyness, that solitude… How disappointing it is when we realise we live in a tunnel and the other
person for whom we feel attracted lives in the outside. The tunnel represents more or less what
the Underground represented for Dostoevsky.
The book is about 150 pages, with very short chapters. I found the first 50 pages terrific, but all
that fuzz in the middle, about María Iribarne's affairs was very, very exasperating. (C'mon,
Castel, give it a break!) But then the last 50 pages resume their strength and are quite amazing,
specially the chapter when Sabato explains what the tunnel means. So here are some
hypotheses, maybe not logical but possible:
1) That you read the book after reading this review.
2) That you have already read it.
3) That you do not read it whatsoever.
4) That you skip this review, which means that you are not reading this at all.
If you choose to follow the first one, there are two hypotheses:
1) That you feel empathy for Mr. Castel and enjoy the book.
2) That you find him annoying.
If you feel empathy for him, there are two possible reasons… Well, not actually: it's most likely
that you are shy, socially anxious and desperate (for the record, so am I) and this book might
suit you well — just canalize your anger somehow else and please stay away from knives.
Talrubei: One of the first things I did after coming back home from my summer trip, is grabbing
Ernesto Sabato's Tunnel for the second time. I had first read it in early 2008. It was in my head
throughout the summer. I felt that I have missed the book and I need to re-read it. By it, I mean
its mood, its characters, its amiable yet aggressive narrative style.
The Tunnel is simply a great novella. It talks about one of the main reasons behind literary
production: human loneliness and the search for a connection with the eternal. The main
character is a painter, Juan Pablo Castel, who gets obsessed with one of his gallery's visitors,
Maria. This obsession with Maria takes up most of the pages and is tiring for us readers, yet so
intense that it becomes contagious.
Life or existence to Juan Pablo is like Maria, and he doesn't seem to understand it. In one
instant he is laying his head on her lap by the shore "like a baby." In another, he is violently
grabbing her arm to get her to confess about something that his doubt created. And, finally, in
another instance he murders her. (dont worry this is not a spoiler, it is actually the first line of
this book.)
This crazy relationship and this obsession is all in Juan Pablo's head and heart and in his
confusion. It is the tunnel that he has created or was born into. A tunnel that is parallel to
everything and never seems to intersect with anything but his loneliness.
With all this being said, the main attraction of the novella, for me, is its impeccable enthusiasm.
Imagine, for example, Albert Camus' The Stranger, Meursault, but with all the enthusiasm. I can
say that Sabato's Juan Pablo Castel is Camus' Meursault but in the opposite direction, with an
overdose of enthusiasm towards his loneliness and confusion instead of Meursault's lethal
apathy.
After reading this book for the second time, I feel energized, enthusiastic, and in the same time
melancholic. The exact feelings that I wanted to remind myself of.

inspiration best of it, after which attempted to get the letter again from the relatively Stalinist
postal employee. In fact, i feel that i'll simply flip this novel of obsession right into a romantic
comedy, yet i feel that Woody Allen has already made a profession of it.
