~ Pastor’s Message ~ A Little Mercy Changes Everything
A Personal Invitation to Lenten Conversion
from Pope Francis… “Let anyone among you
who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at
her” (John 8:7)
Today’s Gospel presents to us the episode of the
adulterous woman whom Jesus saves from being
condemned to death. His attitude is striking: we do
not hear the words of scorn or of condemnation,
but only words of love and mercy which are an
invitation to conversion: “Neither do I condemn
you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more”.
God’s face is the face of a merciful father who is
always patient. God understands us, waits for us,
does not tire of forgiving us if we are able to return
to him with a contrite heart. A little mercy makes
the world less cold and more just. We need to understand properly this mercy of God, this merciful
Father who is so patient and never ever tires of
forgiving us! Though we ourselves tire and grow
weary of asking for forgiveness, God never tires of
forgiving. God is the loving Father who always pardons, who has that heart of mercy for us all. So let
us too learn to be more merciful to everyone.
Jesus, help me become more merciful and forgiving of others and even myself, as God is.
St. Henry: March 17, Thursday @ 7:00pm

• Widows, Widowers and Singles… The vote is in and Chinese food is what we will be enjoying at the Dragon Palace
Restaurant on Wednesday, March 16. It is the new/old Chinese Restaurant located at Cleveland and Burnside across
from Heidi’s. We will meet at 1:00 for lunch. So reservations can be made, please call Ilene at 503-667-2500 by Sunday, March 13.
• St. Henry Garden Plots… The season is upon us and the Gardeners are starting to get
excited about this years plantings. The garden, located on the east side of the church, has
a couple of plots ready for someone with a green thumb to tend to. Rental for garden
space is very reasonable. See Terri in the office if you are interested in a 10X 20 section.
• Fasting Challenge… Kenosis, or self-emptying. In your ongoing ecological conversion, how can you continue to remove those things in your life that get in the way of hearing the cries of the earth and the poor? How can your personal
fast become a feast for our one human family and our common home?
• Tax Refunds and Tithing… Are you receiving a tax refund this year? Have you considered giving a percentage of it
back to your parish? Even if you are not yet able to give a full 5% or 10% tithe to your parish on a regular basis many
Catholics find that tithing on unexpected income – a tax refund, winnings at the Casino, or an inheritance – is a great
first step to experiencing the joy and contentment that come when we really do give as God has asked us to give. Try
it yourself and feel the joy.

Knights of Columbus Family of the Month
This month of March 2016 Council # 3179 has selected two special people in Brother Oliver and
his wife Connie Clausing as Family of the Month. Special because they symbolize families of true
great faith and their commitment to family.
While Brother Ollie saw first light in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. His family of 7 children moved to
Portland, Oregon when he was 2 yrs old, Connie, his wife was born in Tacoma, WA. Ollie attended Vernon Grade School and finished high school at Benson High. Connie attended Dash
Point Grade schools, Jason Lee Junior High and Aquinas High School in Tacoma and went on to
finish college at Marylhurst College.
Brother Ollie attended and graduated from Sales Training Incorporated then worked for West Pacific Sales Co. He later
moved to Tillamook, Oregon and worked for the PUD. He went back to Portland where he was employed by Western
Transportation Co. (Crown Zellerbach), as lead-man, where he retired after 28 years of service. Connie taught first grade
in the David Douglas District before their children were born. After their children were in school, she was a teachersubstitute for the Gresham School District for many years.
Ollie and Connie met in 1964 through a friend at Marylhurst. Connie was a cradle Catholic but Brother Ollie became a
Catholic shortly before they were married in 1965. Last November, 2015 the Clausings celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. The Clausing Family now consists of daughter Mary Helen, now a Social Worker in Portland, and son, John.
John and his wife Heather lives in Orange County, CA with their 2 beautiful daughters, Sarah and Meghan who are both
attending college.
Since 1969 when the Clausings joined St. Henry parish after moving to Boring, OR, they have enjoyed being involved in
religious programs, parish auction, soup kitchen, food pantry, parish picnics as well as Care Ministry at the parish.
With the Knights main goal of strengthening ones faith and helping people in need and seeing how the Knights create camaraderie in helping many parish activities plus invitation from late Brother Knights Ken Lochman and Joe Egner, Ollie
joined the order about 30 years ago. It was a decision he never regretted and up to this day keeps him busy setting up the
gym for Knights’ activities, steak dinners and helping at the Knights’ booth during the October Fest at St. Michaels in
Sandy. Brother Ollie has been an Outside Guard Officer for Council 3179. He says, “Join and get involved – you will be
glad you did”
Hobbies? Working out at a gym 6 days a week is top on the list, together with reading books, faith classes at St. Henrys
and spending time with family and friends.
To have a family like Ollie & Connie Clausing in our order surely uplifts spirits of Brotherly and Family love and faith at
Council # 3179.
