Cláusulas condicionales
con si contrarias a la
realidad actual

En español y en inglés las oraciones
condicionales tienen dos cláusulas, una cláusula
condicional con si (if clause) y una cláusula
principal (main clause)

La cláusula condicional con si puede estar al
comienzo o al final de la oración

Si no tuviera tarea, iría al centro comercial.

Iría al centro comercial si no tuviera tarea.
Condiciones contrarias a la realidad actual –
presente- (*currently contrary)

Cuando la cláusula con si se refiere a una situación contraria a la
realidad en el presente (currently contrary) la cláusula con si
necesita el imperfecto del subjuntivo.

Como ésta es una condición totalmente hipotética , la cláusula
principal debe usar el condicional

*There are two kinds of currently contrary sentences:


A. The situation described is not currently true. But if the situation changed- there
is a possibility that will change - , the result clause would be able to occur
B. The situation described is not currently true. But if the situation changed- it is
unlikely to change - , the result clause would be able to occur

A.

Si yo fuera presidente prohibiría la quema de árboles
If I were president I would ban the burning of trees [ I am not the president now,
but there is a possibility that I might get elected in the future ]
B.

Si tú fueras a la fiesta, yo iría también.
If you were going to the party, I would go too.
[but the reality is that you are not going, so I won’t go either]

Yo te diría la verdad si la supiera.
I would tell you the truth, if I knew it.
[but the reality is that I don’t know the truth, so I cannot tell you what it is]
Pistas (HINTS)

En inglés: the use of the past tense in the “if” clause to indicate
a present/future situation.
“If you spoke [right now]...”


En español: usa el imperfecto del subjuntivo en la cláusula con
si.
“Si tú hablaras (ahora)…”
En inglés: the use of the word “would” in the main clause to
indicate conjecture for present/future time. “...they would believe
you [now or in the future]”.

En español: usa el condicional en la cláusula principal.
“…Ellos te creerían (ahora o en el futuro).”

Después de “Como si… (as if) siempre se usa el
Imperfecto del Subjuntivo sin importar cual es el primer tiempo
verbal que se usa en la oración.
~Antonio se vestía como si fuera un rey.
He dressed as if he were a king
~Hablan como si supieran la lengua desde niños.
They speak as if the knew the language since childhood.
