A leading shipping company
Baleària is a leading Spanish shipping company that
specialises in passenger and rolling cargo transport
among the Balearic Islands and also as one of the
largest operators in the Strait of Gibraltar. The
company also provides services in the Caribbean.
Baleària operates routes between mainland Spain (the ports of Barcelona,
Valencia and Denia) and the Balearic Islands in addition to being the only
company that connects these islands together. On the other hand, it works
the Algeciras-Tangier and Algeciras-Ceuta lines in the Strait (the main connecting point between Europe and Africa).
The company's commitment to internationalization, which began at the
end of 2011, has taken it to operating services between the United States
and the Bahamas under the Baleària Caribbean brand.
Founded in 1998 in Denia (Alicante), the company is now a reference as concerns service, innovation and social responsibility in the maritime transport
sector.
With a fleet of 22 ships and more than 1,000 employees, the shipping company is held by Adolfo Utor (57.5%), the Chairman of the company, and the
Matutes Group (42.5%).

Business Statistics
Since its foundation, Baleària has earned a
reputation as a constantly growing and expanding
company both due to the incorporation of new ships
as well as the opening of new markets and lines
which has made it a leading firm.
Some of the company's most important figures include the fact that the
Baleària Group carried more than 3.2 million passengers, 4.1 million linear
metres of rolling cargo and 660,000 vehicles in 2014.
In the last six years, the company has modified its strategy by changing
its commitment to high speed with the incorporation of four newly-built
ferries between 2009 and 2010. The innovation involved with these ships
has allowed the company to maintain its turnover and growth throughout
these years of falling national demand. In spite of the current economic
situation, the company has been able to increase its turnover to attain 279
million euros in 2014, and 57 million in EBITDA.
The evolution in its human resources, which exceed a thousand people, has
been marked not only by growth in the number of lines and the incorporation of new ships to its fleet but also job stability.

Management and organization
The company's management team includes those who are responsible for
the various geographic areas where it operates as well as those responsible
for the different departments. The fact that the Chairman of Baleària, Adolfo Utor, is also the CEO and majority shareholder, offers a dynamic component with which to flexibly handle the ever-changing market circumstances
all while constituting an advantage that has enabled the company's cohesion, growth and consolidation.
Adolfo Utor, President - CEO
The professional career of Baleària's Chairman, Adolfo Utor, has always
been linked to the shipping sector ever since he joined Flebasa in 1984. In
1998, Utor led the foundation of Baleària and, as its Chairman, has made it
the leader of maritime passenger transport with and between the Balearic
Islands in addition to considerable presence in the Strait and the Bahamas.
Moreover, Utor is a member of the ECSA (European Community Shipowners’ Associations), Board of Directors of CEOE, where he chairs the Consejo
del Mar; the Advisory Council for the Asociación de Ingenieros Navales y
Oceánicos de España (AINE), the Bureau Veritas Spanish Naval Committe,
Exceltur; the Mesa de Turismo Nacional; the Asociación Valenciana de Empresarios and is the founder and executive of the Círculo de Empresarios de
Dénia, Fundación Conexus as well as a member of the Advisory Council of
the Asociación para el Progreso de la Dirección. From 2009 to 2014 Adolfo
Utor has been the Chairman of the Spanish Shipping Association (ANAVE,
as it is known in Spanish).

Innovation
Baleària is committed to R+D+i projects that enable
it to reduce its CO2 emissions and consumption of
fuel in an effort to achieve a more efficient fleet.
Baleària is a pioneer in Spain in the promotion of the use of liquefied gas in
maritime transport as it is working on the development of the first auxiliary
gas engine for a passenger ferry and has signed agreements to substitute
the diesel engines in some of its high-speed ships with new LNG engines.
This change in energy is a response to its environmental commitment and
its adaptation to future regulations as the use of gas reduces CO2 emissions by 40% and eliminates all other types of emissions that are harmful
to human health.
Baleària is participating in the EU's Horizon 2020 program with a project
on the co-generation or use of the heat produced by its ships to generate
electricity for self-consumption.
It also participates in projects financed by the EU's R+D FP7: ThroughLife
(already finished, it analysed new materials that reduce corrosion in ships)
and Joules (which studies the optimisation of the energy process in ships
to reduce polluting emissions). On the other hand, it works to reduce rolling
cargo loading and unloading operation times by half.
One of the greatest challenges facing Baleària is its new management system which will allow it to comprehensively manage the shipping company's
main pillars - the customer side (bookings) as well as its material and human resources (ships). This new tool shall guarantee the company's future
and competitiveness.
Baleària Ecoefficiency Index
(IEB)
Baleària's Ecoefficiency Rating (IEB)
links its contaminating emissions with
the actual ship occupation by mile. In
an effort to improve this rating, the
company's innovation is aimed at decreasing CO2 emissions and increasing
its occupation.
IEB 2014
Fleet average: 0.158 kg CO2/t x mile
The Environment
The environment is one of the shipping company's main commitments
and, therefore, it fosters improvements in resource optimisation,
consumption control and waste
recycling. To this end, it has implemented a quality and environmental management system certified
by Bureau Veritas which is based on
ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004
standards.

Internationalization
One of the company's major focuses for the future
in order to be more competitive is opening up to
foreign markets. Baleària has the capacity to keep
growing and become a global operator.
In 2003, Baleària took the first steps towards internationalization by obtaining a licence to work the high-speed Algeciras-Tangier line. After just
5 years from its foundation, the company exported its business model to
Morocco.
As a result of Baleària's internationalization strategy, it inaugurated a route
in 2011 between Fort Lauderdale (near Miami, in the United States) and the
port of Freeport (Grand Bahama, in the Bahamas) and later also created
connections to the Bahaman island of Bimini.
One of Baleària's challenges is to increase its turnover from international
traffic, 15% in 2014, by 50%. To do so, new business is being explored in the
Caribbean and in South America.
A Model for Export
The Short Sea Shipping model involves mixed regular cargo, passenger and
vehicle maritime transport on Ropax type fast ferries (for passengers and
vehicles) and standard ferries (for rolling cargo as well). This ships allow for
rapid, efficient and safe operations all while offering detailed services for
passengers.
7
Corporate Social
Responsability
For Baleària, CSR is a way to manage the company
and a commitment to all of its interest groups
which allows it to create shared values based on
responding to social and environmental needs.
The Baleària Foundation
The Baleària Foundation was created in 2004 with a solid view to meeting
the company's social responsibilities through which it gets socially involved in
the territories where the shipping company operates. The Foundation, which
collaborates with more than 270 entities in different areas (social, cultural,
sports, ecological), works to fulfil the commitments defined in its Code of
Conduct and Business Ethics.
Code of Conduct
This document describes the values, ethical principles and practices that
must guide and stimulate Baleària's activities internally as well as the steps
to follow when working with the company's various interest groups.
Baleària Values
The Business School
The Baleària Business School offers
training for its workers' professional and personal development and
for the professionals it recruits who
wish to work at the shipping company.
A solid commitment with customers, with the aim of offering quality services which guarantee their safety and satisfaction as well as establishing
honest and lasting relationships.
Commitment with society, undertaking actions that improve social cohesion and cultural reinforcement in the areas where the company operates.
Innovation and continuous improvement, which is applied to vessels and
services so that the company is competitive and able to achieve excellence
in its management.
Respect for the environment, with effective action and policies which go
above and beyond simply complying with regulations.
Commitment with our employees who are the company’s principal asset
and, therefore, advocating appropriate and stable relationships within a
framework of equal opportunities.
8
Cargo
Baleària has extensive experience in the transport of
large volumes of goods, both in Ro-Pax (which carry
passengers in addition to cargo) as well as in cargo
ships, on all of the lines it operates in Spain.
From its foundation, Baleària has helped improve maritime connections
and has brought its different destinations closer together. With respect to
cargo, the shipping company has contributed to the concept of "just in time"
with reliable, daily and on-time services that have made it possible to improve supplies and optimise companies' logistics chain.
The technical characteristics of its ships and their holds facilitate the transport of self-propelled cargo vehicles (which can embark using their own
means), a service that Baleària has always promoted on short-distance
and medium-distance routes with the confidence that the drivers themselves are the ones who can provide the best logistics solutions and flexibility
when carrying their own goods with their own vehicles (70% of all embarkations are completed with drivers on board)
Baleària Cargo
Baleària Cargo, the Group logistics unit, specializes in offering a wide range of personalized products and services to transport cargo in accordance
with customer needs, whether a comprehensive service from door to door,
door to dock or dock to door. Baleària Cargo has more than 350 teams.
9
Service Excellence
Offering service that exceeds our customers'
expectations is one of Baleària's objectives. Service
excellence is important before and after travel but,
above all, the on-board experience must be pleasant
and original.
The shipping company's philosophy is that its passengers must feel as
though their holidays have begun as soon as they board. Our ships are not
just a means of transport between two locations but rather a place to begin your holidays, enjoying the relaxation, entertainment and gastronomy
offered all the way to your destination.
Passenger comfort is guaranteed with the different types of accommodation (depending on the ship: tourist or first-class seats and cabins). Some
of our primary on-board services include our restaurants and bars, shops
and special family services.
On-board entertainment is one of Baleària's strong points. Besides audiovisual screenings, some ships feature Internet, relaxation areas on outdoor
decks, child play areas and swimming pools. During holiday seasons, added
value is offered on our routes with entertainment programs that include
musical and magic performances, children's workshops and activities led by
instructors as well as massages and beauty treatments.

Another aspect Baleària is promoting on-board is its culinary diversity
and quality with seasonal, recently-made products, varied menus (complete menus, single dishes and vegetarian or gluten-free dishes), à la carte
restaurants, typical dishes from the areas where it operates... Also worth
highlighting are its cocktail menus and ice creams in the summer.
Service excellence is a goal shared by all of the company's employees and
is reflected in its customers' loyalty (9 out of every 10 travel again with the
company).
10
A Large, Modern Fleet
The Baleària fleet is comprised of 22 ships, 12 of which
are ferries and 10, high-speed ships. They are two
types of complementary ships with different features
for passengers meaning the shipping company often
combines them on some routes.
Ferries
Baleària's current focus is on its ferry services. Thus, the fleet was renewed
between 2009 and 2010, with an investment totalling 350 million euros to
incorporate four next-generation ships: Martín i Soler, Passió per Formentera, Alhucemas and Abel Matutes. These ships mostly stand out because
of their sustainability as well as their design and services which are tailored
to passenger comfort. On the other hand, technical innovations have been
added for pleasant journeys even in adverse weather conditions. Therefore,
Baleària has innovated its offer by guaranteeing the reliability of its connections and offering added value with leisure and entertainment services.
Fast ferries
The main characteristic of its fast ferries is their navigation speed, normally
above 32 knots, which makes it possible to complete journeys in a shorter
amount of time to essentially create a bridge between two points.
