Today’s Gospel Reflection
1st Reading: Gn 9:8-15 * Psalm 25:4-9 *
2nd Reading: 1 Pt 3:18-22 * Gospel: Mk 1:12-15
THE MEANING OF OUR BAPTISM
Lent is the time of year that we devote to scrutinizing our
lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection
of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of
what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the
waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into
a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant,
the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but
a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation
of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God
for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience?
The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” It
might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings
before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help
us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises.

“Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths.”
— Psalm 25:4

ST. MICHAEL CHURCH
PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO
Dear Parishioners and friends,
Today is the first Sunday of Lent.
PASTOR’S MESSAGE
Lent is a forty-day liturgical season that begins on Ash Wednesday
and concludes on the Great Vigil of Easter.
The number forty frequently occurs in the old and the new testaments of the Bible. It rained
forty days and nights during the Great Flood (Genesis 7:12); the people of Israel were forced to
wander in the wilderness for forty years (Numbers 14:33-34); the inhabitants of Nineveh fasted and
repented for forty days in response to the preaching of Jonah (Jonah 3:4-5). “Forty” has always had
special spiritual significance regarding preparation. Moses stayed in Mount Sinai for “40 days and
40 nights, without eating any food or drinking any water”, preparing to receive the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28). Elijah walked “40 days and 40 nights” before he reached the mountain of the
Lord, Mount Horeb (another name for Sinai) and had a vision of God (1 Kings 19:8-9). Most importantly, Jesus stayed in the desert for “40 days and 40 nights” fasting, praying, and being tempted by
the devil, before He began His public ministry (Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12-13; and Luke 4:1-13).
Jesus appeared on various occasions to the apostles and others forty days between His resurrection
and ascension during which He strengthened their faith and prepared them for the coming of the
Holy Spirit (Acts 1:3).
Lent is a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works in preparation of the
celebration of Easter.
How do we prepare for Easter? During Lent, make an effort to attend Mass as frequently as
you can; visit the Adoration Chapel. On March 23, at 7:00 p.m., we will have our Lenten penance
service and several priests will be around to hear confessions. Do good works, especially works of
mercy. Participating in the Annual Catholic Appeal is an opportunity to do some sacrifice.
Let us pray to the Holy Spirit to grant us a heart to pray, a heart to share, a heart to serve, a
heart to witness, and a heart to build bridges.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
FEBRUARY 22, 2015
The mission of the Academy is to form young disciples to be spiritually, intellectually, and socially
prepared to integrate gospel values for living a Catholic, Christian life in a secular world. We are
committed to providing a Christian environment where students experience God through exploration of
their lives and the wonders of His creation. The Academy envisions itself as a partner with parents;
sharing the educational ministry of the Church.
Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community!
We lead such busy lives; parents, grandparents, even children. It is very difficult to set aside even a little
time to be silent. Now think about the difficulty in finding time to be silent, and, focusing on God. We all get
caught up in our day to day activities. Finding the time and place to ‘just be’ with God is not easy. This week, our students
began the wonderful art of meditation. During this Lenten season, during some part of the day, teachers and students will put
the worries and cares of the day aside and meditate; just to be with God.
Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade
school. You are invited to call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. If you think it is too expensive to send your child
to Catholic school, give us the opportunity to show you how the cost of your child’s Catholic education can fit in your budget.
Call 619 470-4880, or e-mail Mrs. Lewis @ [email protected]. Fr. Manny offers a $1,000.00 discount to new
families enrolling in the Academy.

GOD’S WORD TODAY.
The Church teaches us that
two spiritual strands weave together to form the fabric of the
season of Lent. The first, and most familiar, is the repentant
character of Lent. Through the penitential practices of prayer,
fasting, and almsgiving we spend these forty days in the desert
of repentance, preparing for the celebration of Easter. The
second strand is the baptismal character of this holy season.
The unbaptized spend Lent in preparation for their baptism and
most of us, the already baptized, spend this time preparing to
renew the promises—the covenant—established when we were
baptized. Today’s readings echo this theme of the covenant
between God and us—God’s holy people. Let us enter the
Lenten desert of repentance, mindful of the promises made at
our baptism when we rejected Satan and professed faith in God.

O God, throughout the ages you have
called women and men to pursue
lives of perfect charity through the
evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks
for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of
inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a

enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters
who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the

Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
